@@succulentravioli954 I'm in the same boat. Nearest schools are 3 hours away from where I live, so I can only visit them at most once a month. So, most of HEMA that I do is reading manuscripts, form practice, and when my other HEMA buddy and I hang, we usually do drills together, and a bit of sparring.
By the time Brian and Jason have concluded the channel, Jason will be one of the most dangerous people in the world and Brian will have been whittled down to a mere stump that occasionally exclaimes "Wow...Ok!"
Further evidence that one day, when Brian tragically parishes while filming, it will not be an accident. Murphy will have just finally succeeded in his dastardly plot...
Although the lessons here explicitly say not to separate the sword hand from the buckler, there are other Medieval/Renaissance styles that show them used separately a lot. Paulus Kal and Marozzo for example.
Gotta give Brian big congrats for surviving a sword to the eyeball and fighting on when there are some guards who quit adventuring after only a mere arrow to the knee. And one to Murphy for finally realizing his life goal of stabbing Brian in the eyeball with a sword. *High five Rogues*
I saw a tweet to this effect the other day! Don't know if you're the same person, but I really love seeing stuff like this. twitter.com/Darkspeeds/status/941726220844011520
that moment when the product that's placed in my content-provider-of-choice's video is both something I want, and a meaningful discount from shopping myself.
I did the short sword and buckler for a short time. the most interesting drills were always against someone with a long sword, totally different experience!
It's so funny to watch these when you know German. Because Fechtbuch, halpschild (halb Schild) or Messer, Oberwacht from the long sword episode are just German words. They pronounce them so differently.
I love this channel because it's just so open... Here's a video about making steaks, here's some cocktails, here's some freaking sword fighting, and lets throw in some explosions for good measure.
When people in the period carried bucklers around it was as a substitute as armor/gloves/shield while doing daily life, because true armor would be a little cumbersome for having a drink and getting some errands run. You pull out a sword in buckler when your coughs off guard doing something while your not geared up. Most of the time sword a buckler fight would be an unarmored civilian fight.
Great video! Really interesting and useful information. I also heard that bucklers can be used similar to shields (some technique can bolognaise or something like that), but that is not as practical for Arming swords or short swords, because they are far too exposed to use the buckler individually from the sword. Later on, however, practices involving the back-sword and saber started combined using the buckler as a secondary or jabbing weapon (like a blunt knife!) because those swords already come with a well-shielded handguard.
1:53 Doesn't the Bolognese school of Swordsmanship have a style of sword and buckler where they hold the buckler out like that? I think I saw some videos of people experimenting with certain Italian manuscripts where the images had the swordsmen holding their bucklers out like that. I do remember hearing that that style isn't very well studied though
can I just say that the most I can get is 5 download and .5 upload and those speeds make me so happy knowing that there is a chance that i might be able to get good internet
That was beautiful! It was like poetry watching them fight........ Then the rogues decided they could fight too... X-3 no seriously I had my last 2 finals today and seeing this video just put me in a much better mood. Thanks you two!
Boxing episode would be cool but what I want to see is a revamped pro wrestling video. I want to see the ultimate return of Kmart Guile Jason's questionable search history "scooby doo" "how to grow a good beard" "drink beer explanation" this man is clearly dangerous
A point on Net Neutrality and VPNs. It's worth noting that a VPN would not protect you. If I was running an ISP that used throttling shaft my customers for more money, I'd heavily throttle VPN traffic so people wouldn't have access to that workaround.
+pc genie a video game isnt real? Woooaaaahhhh. Next thing you'll tell me is that i cant carry 6 assault rifles and 3000 rounds while running like in Call of Duty.
Wait, what, you can open carry swords Texas? Probably why, rapiers, and Scottish claymores had hand baskets. I honestly did not know the buckler was meant to be used basically like a pseudo hand basket, but even better, these guys are a wealth of knowledge, on a broad spectrum of information, imo
You guys actually just saved me money in an odd way with the talk about internet speed. Made me look up my speed with Arvig.com which I go through and found out they were throttling my internet from 50mbs that I'm paying for down to 25mbs after multiple test and double checking with some people I know.
That's the great thing about weapon-based martial arts is that weight and strength differences is less of a factor since edged weapons are huge force multipliers that you don't need a lot of strength to cause debilitating injuries. Your opponent can hurt you just as much as you can hurt him.
so i dont want to be a downer or anything and i personally love nord vpn service. and its true that the cable company cant see exactly what your doing with a vpn on, but they do see the vpn. they can literally just say your not allowed to use said vpn at all and force you to stop using it. which is garbage.
Speaking of a modern rouge... the ad was rougeish I hope it doesn't sound too far fetched to thumbs up because the ad but with the new net neutrality how is a VPN not a modern rouge tool and the ad fits the channel so well. Well done guys.
Well, there are ways around that... Namely finding a good dragon that can show you how to defend yourself (and probably your city/town) from evil dragons that want to... y'know kill you and burn everything... without actually killing any dragons in the episode. Everyone's happy then.
17:22 Did you mean the final ward? It's 1 part Green Chartreuse, 1 part Gin, 1 part Maraschino liqueur and 1 part Lime juice. 18:51 I'm a master of Ward 8. 4 parts rye whiskey to 1 part orange juice, 1 part lemon juice and a drop of grenadine, stirred and strained over fresh rocks with a boozy cherry and orange peel garnish. It's the perfect combination of sweetness and acidity to bring out the most subtle of notes in any Canadian or French whiskey. 20:20 XD That's great!
By far the most common weapon to pair with a dagger is rapier. I'm far from an expert, but I don't know of any sources that do arming sword (the one they're using in this) and dagger. The problem is that even a fairly beefy main gauche or sail dagger is going to have a very difficult time parrying a cut from a fairly heavy cutting sword, where as rapiers, pretty light in the cut and thrust centric, are easier to control with the dagger.
Rapier and dagger is actually done, and is taught in historical fencing manuals. But, in order to actually learn that stuff, you need to be good with the rapier already, and rapier itself can be very extensive, and you need to know the basics of Medieval dagger fighting and/or knife fighting. So that's years of study and practice, and that's why arming swords and messers paired with a buckler became really popular for your average Medieval Joe-blow. Simple, effective, straightforward. That's not to say sword and dagger wasn't done in those times. Talhoffer shows a manuscript of him taking on multiple opponents with a messer as his primary weapon, and in his off-hand he has a buckler and a dagger. But, Talhoffer was master swordsman, so he was exceptional and not indicative of the common fencer. And if I could get technical, shields are considered a weapon, not a pure defensive piece. Bucklers, in addition, make EXCELLENT knuckle dusters, but strikes with a shield or a buckler in the manuals only really happen at grappling distance, where one fighter has control of their opponent's weapon. In MS I.33, in the 1st Play, which is discussed in this video, an option for the fencer assuming Halpschilt, is after counter-binding and stepping into distance of the opponent assuming 1st Ward, you can, instead of a shciltslach, or shield bash, you can use your buckler to grapple the opponent's sword and buckler and stab them in the face. There's a lot to sword and buckler, and MS I.33 is only one of many. Talhoffer has several sources on sword and buckler as well.
Brian thank you for reminding me to turn my VPN back on. The reason it was off is because mine just stops working sometimes so unless I turn it off I can't access the internet. I have the problem with Private Internet Access and I had it with Nord too.
23:08 Some of Jason's search history is *really* dubious. Scooby Doo; drink beer explanation; *how to grow a good beard!* Man, just when you think you know a guy!
The way you guys kept forgetting the bucklers was painful. Like, it's not much of a shield, but between something and nothing, I know what *I* want between my body and a sharpened piece of steel
wow So im going thru and always checking knowledge that ward 1 is the same as my first draw with my katana. Using my back hand on the blade to strike thru. I love watching all sword techniques and you guys are great. Don't usually comment all that much but are u sure u dont use the back hand of your buckler hand to drive your sword forward faster and harder? I am no master by any means but that whole motion looks like a double punch one with your buckler hand punch your sword hand that way you dont extend or expose but have maximum power in the first opening strike cause thats definetly opening Cut.

Anyone ever seen that video of two guys sword fighting on instagram. They were real swords and one of the guys arm got sliced open and he didn't even realize it. I just remembered since this is with swords.
Rocknoob49 I'm curious of the stance with sheath like for me in my 15years we never do that except Fro the first draw, from there it's always and I mean ALWAYS hanging, St George to low guard, reverse forward, forward and low guard but low is not something advised as it's about defending your body and not being dramatic with sword play.. all in all these guys know what your doing, I feel his over extension was purely to express the reach and constant state of alertness rather than his specific technique. I will say though some people find it hard to strictly stay on point with traditional methods as the adaption of style And visual education of "what we know" as sword play has taught many of us bad habits.

Anthony and Bryant sparing, it looks so silly but it is so effective.
This is great! Do you have a video on fighting with a sword and dagger, like using a dagger in your off-hand rather than a buckler?
By far the most common weapon to pair with a dagger is rapier.
I'm far from an expert, but I don't know of any sources that do arming sword (the one they're using in this) and dagger. The problem is that even a fairly beefy main gauche or sail dagger is going to have a very difficult time parrying a cut from a fairly heavy cutting sword, where as rapiers, pretty light in the cut and thrust centric, are easier to control with the dagger.

Anyone ever seen that video of two guys sword fighting on instagram. They were real swords and one of the guys arm got sliced open and he didn't even realize it. I just remembered since this is with swords.
I don't know what you are talking about, but you have my interest.
Is a saber different enough from the other weapons that you could do a video on it? I would like to see a video on how to use one.
One with a handguard so it’s different enough from this one.
That instructor should really watch their distances, they tend to stretch out a loooot. Cool guys though!
I am absolutely going to learn these for my case-weapon style. xD
I expected a DS parry king, but im not disappointed with this though
I really want to take up fencing lessons again. I miss it.
"Is there a rival school?" "Not anymore."
