The original practitioner of ringen was a perplexing man named Sir Kayfabe. He would get dressed up as an oversized key fob and went by Mr. Key Fob, but when the ringside commentators mispronounced his name, he embraced it and refused to correct them.

As far as i know, both styles are more intended for civilian competition, not so much for selfdefence. Yes but, the ringen they are talking about IS time specific, the problem is that, since everyone was doing it they never settled for a name to it. In fact "war wrestling" at that time existed trought Europe in its entirety, and every culture had a different name for it....all of them roughly translate to wrestling, seems that it's easier to give it a generic name than dealing with having to wrap your head around every single name for every single school of it around an entire continent.

So, I do more Italian Medieval Wrestling (Fiore dei Liberi's "Abrazare") and what I find interesting when put in conjunction with Ringen is just how much both are similar to other Wrestling/Grappling techniques from around the world and through time.
Recently I saw a video of a modern Wrestler and a Judoka sparring and I was surprised with how similar the techniques were to what I do, as well as what they've shown in this video. There will always be debates on which style is better, with even very strong and convincing evidence, but it's cool to know that a lot of them share similar techniques that are clearly effective.
