Thank You, Ott!!!!!! I had given up on the FG knot, but you have pointed out the HUGH mistake that other instructors either didn't emphasize or I was just too slow to pick up on........I was keeping my braid TOO TIGHT and my knots were not taking advantage of the, "GIVE or FLEX'', in my braid. Therefore, my fluoro or mono wraps were just piling up on each other and I became so frustrated thinking I was the stupidest fisherman in history (which would have confirmed others thoughts about me!!! HA!!) You saved my bacon!!! Now I have to try tying this knot in a rocking boat at 40 degrees and 20 mph wind.....Keep teaching and sharing as you have the knack!!
You have no idea how many different videos/attempts I’ve had at this knot and this is the first time I have been able to successfully tie this knot and I’m so happy about it. This is going to change my fishing forever, I’ll be able to skip better and just cast better in general thank you Ott for making it that much more simple.
Me too, not that other videos not work, but feel left something out ir camera not catch it. Hands Down Best Video.... Now i do this like a pro everytime unreal.
This was a game changer, I switched to using Alberto Knot (which isn't bad) because the braid would fall out my teeth all the time. This is the ticket. Thanks!
I like your method of using the rod to put tension on the braid. I've seen sketchy FG knot videos by pros. But your FG knot was consistent. Always wet braid to get a good knot. I like to pull on the lines using a tool without cutting into your hand.
I was cleaning up behind my partner this summer punching mats in pads with a leader of 30lb big game FG knotted to 65. Leader ALL the time, right on Ott!
I have struggled with this knot for so long. Anchoring the braid to the reel handle with the loop knot is a step I never thought of before, but it is the key to tying it successfully every time! Thanks, Ott!
Ott, I have tried tying this knot over and over with no luck....only frustration. After watching your video, I literally tied it the first time and have tied it several times since with great success! I really appreciate it and God bless!
Thanks Ott, I was really struggling with the FG knot your new method is the choice. Use the flyfishers technique add a bit of power flex UV glue drys in seconds. That will cinch it up complete. Come on down to Florida when it gets cold you will like it in December.
Man Ott this is the best video I have seen ever on how to with the fg knot thank you going to practice that way loop around handle and wrapped around index and middle. I'm left handed but was raised by right handed people so I'm ambidextrous. Being using this knot now all the time
@ottdefoe I have seen so many different ways to tie this knot, I like this way. Thank you Your biggest fan from MN, ..... falafel, is that what I caught in MN. LOL
Thank you so much for making this video! This is the only video that I could find that it was actually explained how to tie it. I may have had a headache after it but it was worth it!
Thanks Ott. I have never used the FG knot but it will become my go to from now on. I agree with the issue of getting the knot in the guides. There have been times I could feel it clear the top guide and missed my target!
This video helped alot. I found that setting the drag so I can pull line as needed allows me to keep everything nice and tight without leaving things loose at first.
Another great video! I’m left handed as well and it’s so helpful to finally find someone to explain the FG knot and other knots so it makes sense to me. 👍🏻 getting ready to watch your second day of qualifying at Smith Lake. Good luck and God Bless!🎣🇺🇸🙏🏼
Very hard knot to understand. I’ve been doing 2 Berkeley or fisherman’s knots and the braid cuts through the flouro. So definitely gonna go home and watch again to see if I can get it right. Thank you sir
I learned to cut the flouro tag end after the first overhand and then 3 more overhands above that like you do, clip the braid and burn the braid tag end down, makes the knot even smaller, pretty slick deal!
I've been practicing for two days now. My main line is 20lbs braid. My "leader" is 8lbs fluoro. I have the FG figured out. But my fluoro will slip through the fine grip "wraps" of the knot. The diameter of the two lines is nearly identical. I have 20lbs fluoro Seagar Tatsu ordered. I figure the FG will bite into the larger diameter line and hold. It's a fun knot to tie. You can see it lengthen as you make the wraps.
I tie it the same way but this year I experimented alot and you can actually tie like a 12 Footer and wind it thru the reels line guide effortlessly. I was surprised. Great video tho ott!!
Excellent. Use all the time but the loop/handle idea is great and the leader length explanation worth every second of viewing this!👌👌BTW LOVE YOUR #rapala OG 4” Slim-nice eater walleye this AM. Smoked it
I have tried this knot multiple times, with some success but more me getting frustrated pulling the leader line out when I try to synch it. I like your method as I am not trying to hold tension on both lines. Thank you for taking the time to show us how you tie the knot
Thanks for doing this!! I'm having trouble w it my wraps end up in a ball and it's just w this big line same what u just used. So obviously I'm not putting enuff tension somewhere.
What a Great Tip!!!👊🏻 Like the four knots at the end. I agree with that loop. Looks like it's a lot more easier & better control. I'm guessing you can do the same with a spinning rod? Stay Safe & God Bless!!!
This method worked for me first try. I failed with other videos, even another that used the reel for tension. I think the key differences were: 1. Backing off tension on the braid after looping over the reel handle (I had been keeping it way too tight, so the braid had no give at all.) 2. Gently tugging the leader material perpendicular to the braid after each second weave over the braid. It's that tug, along with a bit of flexibility in the braid that started forming the distinct coil of braid around the leader. In my failures the leader would just wrap around the braid. When the braid is somewhat loose, the leader weaves are able to sort of invert into the braid.
Thanks a lot, Ott! I had a buddy teaching me this knot, but using teeth. It sucks 🤣 Tying it off to the reel makes it so much easier! Two questions if I may..... Do you ever use glue on your FG knots? Have you pros ever found a way to protect your hands while tying knots? I fish in really clear water using 4-7lb line.... I'm sick of my hands getting sliced up like razor blades 🤣

Awesome! Any chance you’d consider making a video on cold/windy weather gear to stay warm while fishing in winter? Insulated/uninsulated. Water Proof bibs and jacket all day over warm clothes, or just wind breaker? Ect God Bless!
Thanks for a great video that's easy to follow! One question: At the end of the knot could you trim the flouro and then add overhand knots to encase the tag end of the fluoro?
I have just a couple questions about the knot. Would you recommend this knot with mono to fluorocarbon? If so would you use more or less wraps? And is there a upper or lower limit to the pound test line you can use this knot with?
Would you add onto this video a copy of the knot-tying portion that is mirror-imaged for us right-handed who are also mentally challenged? Thank you and Lord bless!

Tough one! A lot of times I try to find an area that may not be as good but has some fish vs being in an area with tons of fish but tons of people. Numbers just work out better some times.

I was actually taught to cut the fluoro, first, like you mention. But, after watching this video, I think there may be some validity in tying the overhands, first. I think it may help ensure that the fluoro tag is better secured, and it may be the reason why I recently had a few failures in my knot. I know it was tied, well, as I caught several decent fish just fine off of it, AND I made sure it was snugged tight. But, sure enough, that knot failed over time. Those knots before cutting the leader may be the key to avoiding that. I'll have to experiment and find out.
Still like shaw 's method! Just put about 20-25 yards of fluorocarbon on your bait caster ! Tie it on your braid ! Wind it up ! Done one knot to the hook ! And dont have to tie these crazy knots ! Ty
