    I did this first exercise and my back immediately cracked all the way down and it was soooo painful but after a few times of rolling, my back felt so much better.

    As a runner who is training for a marathon, these foam rollers ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx9XSsjzA4f84VmhBCHlyhec7XILIxennL are really good for sore and tight muscles. This one is a good size (mine is the purple, 36 inches) not too big but big enough to work and roll both my legs at the same time - I took a photo holding the roller next to me just to provide a better representation of its size. I noticed some reviewers who complained that this is, “just a foam noodle”… and yes, that’s exactly what it is. It’s a high density foam roller. It is absolutely NOT the same consistency/strength/durability/ or texture as a ‘pool noodle’ thought and I disagree entirely with those that say so. As a former collegiate athlete and marathon runner, I’m comfortably giving this roller 5 stars. It’s lightweight and durable and does just what I need it to do at a budget-friendly price. Overall, I have no complaints and am happy with it!

    Hi Michelle, I think foam roller is painful for people with overweight, is there something to solve this?

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  5 років тому +7

      Hi Jill yes roller can be painful for a variety of reasons. You can try using a small diameter roller and some have soft surfaces. There are D rolls that are semicirclular. You could try a towel rolled up or a soft pool noodle instead. You'll find that over time your tolerance for the roller should build up too, take care

    Are these safe to do with a sprained ligament in your back? Will they help it heal or should I just use ice and heat?

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  4 роки тому +3

      Camden just start with ice first 48 hrs then heat thereafter. Introduce very gradual stretches when healing has had time to take effect and pain reduces around 1-2 weeks depending on the severity

  • @motlking
    @motlking 5 років тому

    Hi Michelle, can the same exercises be done if you're pregnant?

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  5 років тому +3

      Hi Motking stretches can be done during pregnancy however you need to take care not to overstretch as your tissues are more flexible than usual during pregnancy. Exercises to avoid after 16 weeks of pregnancy are exercises done lying flat on your back as this can affect blood flow to your baby, all the best

    Is foam rolling safe for weak bones?

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  5 років тому +1

      Hi Abdul great question, it depends upon which areas of the body you're working on and the degree of decreased bone density. Someone with very weak bones wouldn't use the foam roller on the spine as there's little fat covering that area however they may be able to use the roller on well padded areas like the buttocks, thighs and calves. Someone with osteoporosis wouldn't do the back extension exercises in this video over the foam roller (shown for the joints)

    Hi Michelle. Thanks for the video... just wondering, as you mentioned back pain, are these exercises safe for a herniated disc patient? They look very tempting but also a little dangerous. Please let us know, in particular, lower region.

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  5 років тому +3

      Hi Abe these exercises don’t really involve the lumbar spine. Bridging action to raise the buttocks off the ground shouldn’t injure the disc however I can’t guarantee that it will feel comfortable. You may like to try placing a long roller length ways along the spine to include support of the sacrum and tailbone along with the neck, knees bent and take the arms overhead and out to the sides of the body to release your upper back and stretch the chest. Alternatively try a rolled up towel under the middle back as shown here le ua-cam.com/video/zB3tV1Qlc5o/v-deo.html Let me know how you go if you have time Abe. Always be guided by discomfort and if an exercise causes pain then cease and perhaps try at a later stage.

    Thank you so much for this. Really nice guide to using my roller properly.. my shoulder blades are a nightmare for knots and tension!
    I have a diastasis recti though on the right of my abdomen after diep flap reconstruction 4 years ago.. (orig plastic surgeon ignored my complaints about my ‘bulge’, said it was just scar tissue... then tried to liposuction it in Jan this year😱
    I saw a new plastic surgeon for a second opinion a he immediately sent me for ultrasound, which showed up the 5cm diastasis recti!
    Currently on a wait list for sirgery to correct it.
    Allowed to exercise bit need to be careful with anything that makes my abs strain... is there a safe way to use the roller to sort out my thoracic jam around T17/18, and my shoulder knots in my rhomboids and supra/infraspinatus (from too many excel spreadsheets!!)
    Or should I maybe just stick with sports massages for now?

    • @michellephysio
      @michellephysio  5 років тому +2

      Hey OldRaver1 have you tried using a ball standing back against a wall to trigger point the tight areas? Standing using a ball will not worsen your diastasis - do you know this technique or would you like to see a video on it?

      My guess is your good if it felt good
