    At work one day I talked to ex-EMT co-worker telling him my leg was pretty numb and felt weird. He said loosen your belt but it didn't quite work. Then he pushed against the outside of my leg by my hip and said it's tight go buy a foam roller and explained what to do. Sure enough it was quite uncomfortable but not painful. Boy after doing it a lot in the tight areas it felt way better no numbness. He said that gets tight on him to. $14 to solve that problem. Now I used it on my back issues and they go away for a few hours. Best money I spent!

      @@davidsantacruz7077 No, he's moving it in the right direction, but he is not holding the spine at an angle to make what is happening clear. A tight hip flexor will cause a greater sway in the lower back, as his spine model demonstrates, but a person would be in a weird position if their spine was in the position he is holding it in.

    I have too use a roll under my lower back. It's the only way to relive the pain. I have arthritis from the tail bone all the way to mid back. Actually I use the end of the bed and mattress, feet on the floor with a roll and have too have the pressure pushing upwards while slightly twisting my hips. I feel the hurt so good pain and feel the crunching and popping. When I'm done I feel like a new man and it last for days. I know you say not to do this, but man it works for me and I've tried all kinds of things to relive the pain.

    The most helpful thing I learned from my physical therapist to do with a foam roller is just to lie on it with the foam roller under the spine, from sacrum to head, and let the shoulder blades drape on either side and just relax and let gravity open everything up. It counteracts the all the stress caused from hunching forward. It was prescribed for me to supplement chin tucks when I was being treated for cervical radiculopathy, but I find it's also great any time I feel myself carrying tension in or between my shoulder blades.

    What I've been doing is using a pool noodle as a low back lumbar support. Sometimes when I sleep my low back is so painful I have to sleep with the pool noodle on my low back in order to relieve the pain.
    Now I realize doing this was causing me even more back pain. I took you guys advice and put the pool noodle on my side, like you guys showed in the video. And I also have sciatica on my left side I put my under the knee pillow under my ankles and slept on my right side.
    My back feels so much better and the sciatica is not as painful. Thank you so much for all of your awesome advice.

      If you can afford it, get an adjustable base for your mattress
      Sleeping jn zero gravity is incredible. No pain at all. That's how the guy got me to buy my base rather than just a full mattress
      He put it at zero gravity and I was laying there and I couldn't even believe that I felt no pain at all in my back and then after laying there for a minute he made it go flat and I was like dude are you serious and he said can you believe you've been sleeping like this your entire life

  • @leoduquette

    First of all, love watching you guys. I couldn't use the foam roller with my sciatica at the beginning as I found it too hard and uncomfortable. One thing I tried at the beginning and it worked wonderfully is a Pool Noodle. I was able to just lean against it on the wall and push that way. Plus the advantage is the pool noodle won't scratch the wall. Imoprtant note, though, is to use the ones that don't have a hole going trough it.

    As a runner who is training for a marathon, these foam rollers ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx9XSsjzA4f84VmhBCHlyhec7XILIxennL are really good for sore and tight muscles. This one is a good size (mine is the purple, 36 inches) not too big but big enough to work and roll both my legs at the same time - I took a photo holding the roller next to me just to provide a better representation of its size. I noticed some reviewers who complained that this is, “just a foam noodle”… and yes, that’s exactly what it is. It’s a high density foam roller. It is absolutely NOT the same consistency/strength/durability/ or texture as a ‘pool noodle’ thought and I disagree entirely with those that say so. As a former collegiate athlete and marathon runner, I’m comfortably giving this roller 5 stars. It’s lightweight and durable and does just what I need it to do at a budget-friendly price. Overall, I have no complaints and am happy with it!

    Bob and Brad are right - when I was 58, I cracked two lower ribs, close to the spine, using a back roller like the ones in this video. It caused some of the worst pain I’ve ever experienced. The only way I could sleep was to kneel beside my bed, cross my arms on the mattress and rest my head there for only about 30 minutes at a time.

    Thank you so much for this video. I have had so many PTs tell me to use this on my lower back and it was agony for me. Another common PT suggestion is to do the pelvic tilts for low back pain. This, too has been awful for me over the last 30+ years as it compresses the spine. I finally, 10 years ago, found a chiropractor who told me to DELETE that exercise from my memory bank. (I never allowed him to adjust my spine as I've had very bad experiences with that from more than one chiro -- I simply asked him for strengthening and stretching exercises to do to help build strength in my core. (At age 23, I experienced a slipped disk and we have a history in my family of low back difficulties including my dad, sister, and her son, all same area L5-S1, so I want to be careful of what I do to my back.) I've also had many PTs ask me to touch my toes so they can see my range of motion but this, too, is something my orthopedist told me to NEVER do. When I share this with my PT, they act all insulted. It is very difficult going to a PT because of this. They think I'm a know-it-all but all I'm doing is trying to share my past experiences. So I REALLY appreciate your helpful videos. I want to let you guys know that if you go to Cleveland Clinic on line, or Scripps in LaJolla, or Mayo Clinic web site and type in `stretches and exercises for strengthening the lower back' they ALL tell you to do the pelvic tilt. So why is this happening? It compresses the spine. When I finally stopped doing the pelvic tilt 3-5 times daily as instructed, I quit having the awful back going out episodes I have endured for the last 30+ years. How I wish I had learned that 30+ years ago. Even my 2nd cousin niece, who has a Ph.D. in physiotherapy recommended that I do the pelvic tilt. Arrrgh. So frustrating. Thank you for listening and thank you, again, for your helpful videos. One question: My current foam roll is way too STIFF for me. I was wondering what density foam roller you are using in this video. Thank you. Renee

    • @L.Spencer
      @L.Spencer 2 роки тому +1

      I think the black roller is high density and the blue is medium density. I watched another of their videos about foam rollers and the had a link for the blue one but it cost $60 on Amazon.
      I agree that we really have to listen to our body and if it says don't do an exercise don't. A good pt won't force you. I've had to change PT because of that.

    • @reneekroyer5104
      @reneekroyer5104 2 роки тому

      @@L.Spencer I purchased the $60 on Amazon but it just didn't do the trick for my upper back muscle pain. I now use a very cheap tennis ball, put up against the wall, and massage the area just by moving it in a circular motion. I look funny but it works. lol

    I have been doing this Japanese back stretch with the use of 7 inch rolled towels at my lower back while I stretch my hands over my head palms down and holding that position for at least 5 minutes. I'm wondering is the 7 inch rolled towels okay, or is it equally bad for the lower back just like the roller foam? Thanks in advance doctors Bob and Brad...love your videos! ❤

    two comments: 1. what if you were to take the roller vertical, supporting the whole spine rather than just the lumbar (if too high, support legs/butt with a few folded blankets)? 2. from experience, you CAN indeed get good lower back release by laying with something firm yet soft (either a bolster or placing a blanket on top of the roller) and putting it directly under the lumbar, depending on the level of pain/injury in the lower back (ie, nothing too intense). this can also help restore natural curve to the lumbar, esp for people with forward flexion syndrome. your thoughts?

    Why do Physical Therapist dislike Chiropractors and vice versa? Recently, I hurt my lower back. The solution should of been, go to Chiropractor to put spine where it needs to go and then go to physical therapist to strenthen muscles to keep the joints from moving around.
    Instead, they send me to physical therapist to do exercises. I can do them myself, but they insisted I go to them 3 times a week. In the end, back still hurt until I popped it back in place. After I 'popped', it felt great and pain was gone.

      Man I actually went to a place called Airrosti. Its a form of therapy that combines a chiropractor with a physical therapists. The 2 work hand in hand with you the same day and work together to get you feeling better, faster. The chiro uses a form of soft tissue release called myofascial release. They massage deep tissue in the back, hamstrings, and hip muscles with extreme pressure. Man it works. I dealt with debilitating problems at the age of 32 and 4 visits had me pain free. Plus I have a whole regimen from the physical therapist that got my specific problem areas determined by the chiro.

    I work on a computer all day, and I'm a fat guy at around 5'7 250lbs. Well about 2 years ago I started noticing pain in my lower back (almost the waist area), and I would really only notice it when I would be out walking for a couple miles. However, the past year now, and pain is worse and I literally can't walk more than a couple minutes without needing to prop myself up and kind of straighten my spine for awhile. I've talked about it with my doctor...she told me I just need to lose weight (that's obvious), but I've been big my whole life and never had this kind of back pain before. Over the last year I've went from walking and biking everywhere, to taking a taxi everywhere because my spine hurts. I've put on at least 50 pounds, and I know that's not helping my back any either.
    You mentioned how the hip flexor muscles can be aggravated by people who sit a lot, and that it can cause issues with the lower spine. I'm wondering if this foam roller device is something that could possibly help my issue, or is it more just for general stretching?
