Thanks for watching & for your support! If you're interested in checking out any of the gear I mentioned in this video (or other stuff I use that I didn't reference) you can check out my Kit above. All the links on there are Amazon Affiliate links.
After many requests to get a breakdown of the gear I use I thought this would be a great resource for people struggling to find useful film tools. But don't feel compelled to buy anything you don't need or won't get value from. Good luck creators! Keep making weird stuff.

*The best camera isn't the one you have. It's the one you master.*
As a journalist in training, such words are widsom. 📹🎬
But obviously a $3k camer with a $2k lens will much more increase the quality. See by this guy's videos.
Aspiring filmmakers should take note of the fact that you have some of the best lighting of anyone on UA-cam, yet your main light is just an inexpensive decorative lamp. If anyone needed evidence that you don’t always need the best of the best gear, this is it!
Guess it really just points out the power of keeping things simple and focused - the minimalist way!
HOW ABOUT THE SOFTWARE, PROJECT YOU USE TO MAKE THE VIDEO? CAN YOU PLZ SHARE IT TO ME?
Might be a little too late, but use davinci resolve. The free version is really good and there are a lot of people switching from Adobe products to Resolve or Resolve Studio. Even the Studio version only costs 299$ for once. Trust me, it's faster and big hollywood studios are using mainly Davinci Resolve Studio.
@@aeres6812 well Hollywood use resolve for color grading for sure. For editing Avid Media Composer is used 98% of the time for movies.
@@d.edwardsfreelanceeditorvi4212 Oh really? Didn't know that. I heard a lot that they also use Fusion. Do you know if that's true?
being someone who just started out I feel like I'm clueless half the time...would love even more videos like this!
I am a lot less busy than Matt and would love to answer any questions you have. I just started making money with my camera earlier this year. I know this is a year old post, but I went to your channel and didn't see anything up. You got it man. Keep going. Make something. I sure hope you are not dead.
Jon Kuhn what would you recommend for a camera to shoot a video of myself in a room and be versatile enough to shoot outside / travel / vlog. Thanks.
@@ethannaka1822 Shoot me an email jonkuhn@blended4media.com
Jon Kuhn sounds good, do you use Instagram? If that’s easier to chat. I’m think about the Sony a 6400. Did my research on the stabilization issues and needing certain lens
Ethan Naka yes sir. Same photo on my profile. Sounds like you’re doing your research. Definitely reach out if you want. 😛
You’re the master of your mind. 🦋
Sy Mates🥰, mallu ✌
Next video: Color Grading
yes please!
Yess!
Dear Matt, we still need this
Yes!!!
Haha that what i am here for
Really like your film grades - would you consider making and selling a LUT pack, or make a video around your colour grading process? Thanks for the great video Matt!
I think he got it from colorcentral and the lit link should be on his patreon. I think not here...
Matt you are a legend
Specific question, how did you find your editing style? Did you look at other filmakers you enjoy?
Just peeped out your channel and I absolutely love what you're doing!
100% its all about stealing ideas and pack them into youre own thing...
copy things you like for about 2 years then let go and start editing without inspiration and you will start to create your won style.
[matt voiceover ]: Shameless plug
[Matt vlogging ]: It's not shameless!!!
😎👌 Loved it 👍 ❤️
Killed me hahahah
This is the first video of yours I’ve seen but it is so honest and real! Not only showing what you have now but talking about what you used to use with good results! As a short film maker working on upping my skills this is super helpful! Thank you so much for making this!
When I feel like giving up as a youtuber I come to your channel.
the best Camera is not the one you have but the one you master"...
This is goals, You inspire me
I love how your voice overs are thought out and occasionally play into the b-roll. It makes your videos seem much more cohesive.
I LOVE your videos Matt. I learn a lot of things: minimalism, life style, coffee and know... Video recording supplies!!
Mastering your camera is definitely an underrated superpower.
been binge watching your channel since last night.
SO 👏🏻 MUCH 👏🏻 GOOD 👏🏻 INFO!
That link for the gear is the link to kit.
Thanks dude for full info about filmmaking
So good dude! You’re a brilliant story teller.
And film maker 😜
Hi, I remember you from that podcast episode, "cha-ching... the lightbulb moment". It was awesome. 😀
Keshav Dulal whoa that’s rad! Thanks so much man.
@@ryanlbowles isn't that the same thing?
Love this guy ❤️
You're awesome
Love from India 🇮🇳
Please do more videos on filmmaking, how you started, where you got your kit from, and what other past videotography have you done?
Matt I almost wanna get that quote from the start engraved on my skin!!!! “the best camera isn’t the one you have, its the one you master!!"
I used a Nikon D90 for many years before finally upgrading to a full frame camera and I always remember getting such great compliments on my portfolio. People used to say how I must have an amazing camera.
The truth of course being that camera was so limiting creatively but it got the job done for a long time due to the fact that I knew that little camera inside out. and I also worked my ass off in editing.
Just as I finished writing this comment, I received a notification about a new episode has been uploaded on your podcast 😁
Thank you for the continued free content and free learning.
This is a super nice comment. I vibe on this quote too. We live in a world where everyone has amazing cameras. Story reign's supreme!
Dude I love your videos so much!!
Dude, thank you so much for this!! Seriously, even just the part about you mentioning that it took 12 years total to amass all of your kit made me feel so much better about my current kit. I've been at it for four years VERY much part-time now, so again - thank you.
I'm not interested in becoming a filmmaker, and yet here I am watching this because your videos are just too beautiful.
Love your videos man
Loved this video! I really like your video style and would love to see more behind the scenes, instructional videos like this.
no surprise you are professional! your video feels so much natural than any others. No over reaction and story is genuine and tight. I really like your video!
Matt: “When I’m filming myself, by myself, all alone.. by myself..... by myself.”
Hilarious.
My interests are not in filmmaking, podcasting, nor camera gear (besides watching and listening), but I really enjoy your videos regardless of the topic. They are so cool and interesting and love your humor! 🤣 🌸

Starting to revamp my arsenal today. Thanks Matt!
Thank you!
I got thrown in at the deep end for my work job in terms of video production and this video has helped me a lot. The lav mic being unreliable has killed too many videos for me 😿
I always love your videos regarding filmmaking! I would love to see some content on your filming process, and some tips from an experienced filmmaker! Thanks Matt!
This was very well made with lots of great info! Thank you, Matt!!
I'm not lying but that under cover on bed I use to record audio for my video.
Thank you matt for sharing this wonderful video that make me realize to master in camera not to buy a heavy purchase and I'll focus on that.
This is the first video I've watched of yours and subbed.
Cannot speak more highly of the 24-105. Total workhorse in the industry at almost every level of production.
Huge fan sir - you're my inspiration to give voiceover a go!
my dude has timeless content thanks to the sick quality of production and the (almost) unchanging outfit
@Matt D'Avella Always nice to see someone else's setup and gear. Thanks for sharing this! 🙌
I've only been filmmaking on a more serious level for about 3 years now, and I can relate to a lot of this already, but there are still great tips. I like your quote, "The best camera isn't the camera you have, but the camera you master." That hit hard.
Would love to see a video explaining different lighting setups. DIY and more expensive setups.
Fun to watch videos. I just try to keep looking ahead and rarely look back. I have such a minimal setup and only purchase more if the checkbook allows. I love seeing where other creators start.
Love your style of filming and editing.
I LOVE your humor man! The kit link is broken?
Color correction and grading! 🙌🏽.
this is so helpful. thanks math.
Hey Matt! Would you consider making a video about light positions and how to use natural light properly? Thanks man, love you videos!
That was one of the most stressful clips yet!!! ahahaha
As a planner I thought I was going stupid crazy trying different setups to do shoots. SOOOOO encouraging seeing a vet doing just as insane things to get the desired result.
ALSO LOVE that one moment you broke the 4th wall over your narration at 1:02!! I absolutely am inspired the way you pull such abstract elements together in such polished content. No small wonder I've been a Patreon sub for the first time ever to this channel in particular. Keep killing it Matt!!! You'll definitely get the Rock on your podcast one day!!! :D :D
Matt, I honestly didn't care about cameras and film-making. But good lord, I enjoy the hell out of your sense of humour and clear explanations. You woke up curiosity within me, you rock!
Cheerss
This was such a great video--thanks Matt!
Hey mate, love the video!! It would be awesome if you could take us through in a video from beginning to end. This is including the idea, script, setting up, filming, editing and what not. Even if it's only like a 1 minute film. It would help us get a picture of the whole job. Nice work!
I love ur house & ur couch so much !
I didn't understand a thing you said but watched anyway. I couldn't care less about filmmaking/photography but loved the video... Whatever it is that you're doing with your cameras and... depth of field (what the hell's that?), you're doing it great.
I love this so much because it’s sooo fun I love film making thanks for sharing, much love from Vancouver Canada
I noticed you deleted your kit. :(
yeaaaaaahhhhh
Kit changed their domain several months ago, and I think those who didn't update their kits didn't transfer over :/
Would definitely love to see more such videos. You can make separate videos for different things (Vlogging, Podcasting, Documenting etc.)
Filmmaking really is a battle but it’s so worth it! I’ve been building my filmmaking skills and my gear slowly over a couple years and I would like to think my video quality has gone up significantly since I started making videos on UA-cam!
There is something clean, fragrant and relaxing about your videos 😆
Chi Chi it’s the Jazz. Lol.
Thank you, Matt
I'm actually still just filming with the camera on my phone, natural lighting and a small pin mic. It works allright and I'm able to get the most out of it, but it's nothing compared to this. It's nice to see a possible future setup though. Thanks for sharing!
Hey Matt! Question: How do you script your youtube videos? Do you write every word or just make a bullet list with the subjects you want to cover? How about a teleprompter? Ever used? LOVE what you do man, changed my life.
I don’t film or do photography or vlogging but I love this breakdown, feel like I can come back to this if ever.
Would love to see a video about your editing work flow or even file management and your minimalist approach to it.
If you haven’t already, could you get some one who travels full time on the podcast.
Ps. When I was a kid I always dreamed of traveling the world as a photographer. Like most, I released that dream and opted for something more ... practical to major in in college. I had all but forgotten my dream, But you’ve reminded me of the things I really wanted to do. I’m currently getting things together to buy a new camera and start a website with all of my photos on it.
The link doesn’t work anymore
please matt can you fix this?
@@DiazThumb the site is now kit.co not kit.com
Appreciate the overview! Thank you, Matt!
You are at another level. 🙌
We need an updated version of this
Hey Matt, I’d be keen to see a video on your creative process when developing storyline + storyboards.
Loved this video!
Hi Matt, do you mind sharing about your post-prod process? For example, how long does it take you to edit the videos, choose your fillers and some shortcuts or possible shortcuts you can take to save time in video editing? Hope to hear from you. ❤ Of course, amazing video as always! You are one of my inspiration for being mindful (still working on the minimalism part) 😅
Love this video Matt! Thanks for posting!
I clicked on your “kit” and it took me to an in home test kit page.
Affiliate links are great. Please continue to link them in your description for all videos (tip was not needed but it may get someone else interested to look at the links. Plus, I'm sure you've already been doing it and I haven't noticed before now.)
This was extremely informative. Thank you!
I hope you make some more videos !!
I'd be interested on Starter Equip for youtubers ... and on software programs that are okay for beginners - to the much better quality.
These videos are so helpful and inspiring!
Help me with macro videography. This was a great help!! Keep it going.
You are the one that inspired me! Thanks !
Such a coincidence... I am editing an interview and music-session right now, my first ever video to come online (and first in general), and I was wondering how you go about making a video. Then this pops up. _Always_ on point, Matt. Thanks!
really love your videos and this video is no different. Very informative.
Fantastic video Matt!
Very insightful. Plenty of great filmmaking tips here!
Another very good video! Thanks for sharing.
That was a super real video I loved it I’m also learning how to get better at story telling
This was great, Matt. I'd love to see a video on your editing and color grading process, either for a talking head style video or one of the podcast interviews.
Voiceover first or afterwards?
afterwards for me
I wonder this too. Sometimes the voiceover dictates your shots. And sometimes it’s the other way around.
Script, that way it doesn't matter which you fo first.
Would love to know as well.
The opening quote made me a subscriber!
Great content, man!
Love it.
I see you having more fun in your vids. I’m getting ahold of your sense of humor and you crack me up man..
Hey, Matt! Great video! It looks like the Kit link isn’t working.
Your make really high quality videos that are shot so perfectly that I had to watch this video. If you ever make another documentary or a big project I would love to help you!!! 🙏
Great insights, really appreciate getting a behind the scenes look at everything!
Damn good video! Please do a video on how you come up with video/documentary ideas and how you write it down. Thanks!
Man. Love your 30 day challenge videos. Always wonder how could you make the awesome videos.
Matt D'Avella, you are amazing!
Learn so much from u bro thanks for sharing your ideas
The hack to film over 30 minutes is interesting. Can you tell us how you did it?
Thank you for all your informative videos!
Thanks 😊
Fantastic advice and content!
I love the humor in this!
