- What are the main differences between smaller wheels and your standard sized wheels and why are smaller wheels so much harder to skate???
In this video I set up some 45mm wheels and talk about the pro's & con's of skating small wheels

What size wheels are you guys riding?
54mm
52's but only because 50's in X99 or F4 rubber and the better modern shapes don't exist
I’m riding the same wheel been riding them for a year they are perfect for me
56mm for those rough streets
53 radials
The color changing blows my mind
It's actually so trippy! You can notice them getting more blue as the session went on and it got colder lol
The smallest wheel I ever had back in the 90’s was the Jovontae Turner 42mm they were literally bearing covers. They were more designed for curb & ledge skating with noseslide nosegrind combos etc. One four wheel slide and they were done 😂
Damn 42mm sounds insane! Yeah you would have rode them down to the core within a few weeks 😂
I love when people say 4 wheel slide. I never hear that anymore!
I guess it's called a power slide now lol @@ripdarlie7442
Actually they were not designed for that at all😮😮😮.... They were designed to slow skateboarding down 😮
Just set up an 9.75 egg with some 45mm 101a snots. Can’t see myself riding them everyday but the board looks so cool. Takes me back 30 years.
Sick! Is it the Eric Dressen guest model?
I'm looking at getting some of those wheels as well!
@@LeonPaxton yes that’s the one. It’s a great deck. The small wheels are amazing but for day to day I’ll be riding the nano cubics.
it looks like you really had fun riding the smaller wheels, thanks for the fun content keep it up!
Yeah dude, I actually enjoyed them a lot!
Thanks so much for watching 🙏🏼
60mm, 54, 52, 45. Bummer about that flat spot. Small wheels catch gumnuts and stones easier. That was a great review. Huge control on the wide truck and small wheels. ❤
Yeah dude, it wasn't a big rock either!
Thanks dude, thanks again for sending them out 🙏🏼
45mm must be fun for flip tricks. Riding 52mm spitfire tablets currently. Smallest wheels I have are 51mm spitfire classics and could not imagine trying smaller than those. Great video. I’m sure you will land noseslide to crooked.😊🤙
It actually helped a lot, especially having them on such a big board!
Yeah dude, I'm going to have to keep working on that trick now that I've started attempting it lol
Love the amazing content keep what ur doing
Thanks so much man, you're a legend!
Good review Leon, I've wondered if smaller wheels would suit me. I'm thinking they'd be more of a short term thing.
Thanks dude! Yeah they definitely have a purpose but it just comes back to personal preference like most things in skateboarding
im about to buy some 45 mm oj wheels, and im really on the edge about it , i ride a 8 inch deck and 53 mm wheels, but this review really helped me
Are they going to be your everyday wheels?
yes they probably will
I ordered the lil bling blings from oj wheels, did you also get them ? If yes are they good ?
i've been skating 99d 48mm spitfire lil smokies tablets for a few months now. might be my favorite wheel
Damn 48mm sounds fun actually! I wonder what the smallest size available is 🤔
39 mm can be ordered still 🤷@@LeonPaxton
52-56. Used to roll with 48-50 in the 90s.
54mm Bone x formula LOVE em !
As a kid in the early 90s I remember being so bummed my wheels were 44s because my friends had smaller ones.
That’s so crazy to think about! There weren’t perfectly smooth skateparks to ride on either so the rough parks and spots would have felt terrible with the smaller wheels lol
I still remember my first "pro" quality setup, Z-flex fiberglass deck, narrow Gullwings, and 70mm Kryptonics. Never rode wheels that big again(!), but settled in around 62-66mm for many years. Now that I'm trying out re-entering the skateboarding world to get back in shape after lockdown, I have 3 different setups, with 54mm Rictas, 58mm Dragon Formula Powells, and a set of 65mm Globe cruiser wheels. All the decks are shaped and 10" wide, all the trucks are 159-169mm. We'll see how it all works out, but I want to stay close to 60mm when I'm back to being comfortable...
Yeah dude, 70mm wheels are insane! That's it man, whatever ends up being most comfortable for you 👌🏼
... 58-60 is pretty much the real deal and has been known for 30+ years....the small wheel gimmick came out to slow Skateboarding down...
(Make it seem safer)... Wheels were big and skateboarding was fast and dangerous.... The small wheels slowed skateboarding down bringing in New blood that would not risk their lives on fast wheels and the dangers of skateboarding at the time.... It was the early 90s.... And was known as the chumping down of skateboarding.... What was seen as a gimmick and a joke just 6 years before , became the standard and bailed out the failing industry.... More skate Sk8 fact through history to come😮😮
@@ron8935 I never liked the modern popsicle decks and tiny wheel trend. As far as my setups, I did grab one more set - 60mm 93a Dragon Formula Powells (right before they discontinued them and replaced them with the new Nano-Cubics), as they have the old-school offset that protects the ends of the axles. Modern small and narrow centerset wheels don't do that - I'll be probably selling off the 58mm Powells. I imagine I'll just wear out the little Rictas as I get back in shape, I like doing standup slides a lot!
After use repurpose into some wind chimes that then tell temperature. Cheap skate gifts!
That's actually a great idea! 😂
I actually just picked these wheels up in the 55mm. Hopefully I won’t be getting any flat spotting with a bigger wheel like these. I just thought the color change was fun and the companies out of Philadelphia where I live so I wanted to support local!!
Oh sick! Yeah it’s actually pretty trippy lol
Yeah the 55mm will feel much nicer 👌🏽
in the early 90s Real release a 54mm 6pack (6pcs) wheels.. coz at the time skaters thot mid 50s wheels are 'small', coming from old school 60s sizes..the smallest i rode was 44..& im 46 now lol
Damn really?! That would have been good for flat spot replacements I guess lol
Yew! Really fun vid.
Thanks dude, thanks for watching 🙏🏼
Those wheels are tiny! Very good analysis, I like ‘em and how light you say they are but the quick loss of speed , feeling all the vibrations, and lock in complications will make this a pass on my end but sure is a rad color changing wheel 🤘🏽
I have 48mm 101a Street Plant Little Scoundrels and they are a little easier to ride and more resistant to flat spots. Those are fun to ride and I have four pairs in a drawer on top of the set I have on my deck. I am a big fan of 52mm Wide Bones V4 STFs. If I could get the Spitfire Radial Fulls in that size it would probably be my favorite wheel ever.
Hell yeah dude, 48mm sounds heaps fun! I'm actually skating Radials at the moment but haven't tried the Radial fulls yet 🤔
@@LeonPaxton well the Radial Fulls are really wide which has it's drawbacks but they are super smooth and grippy.
Yeah I can imagine back tails would be a bit grippy but they would be great in transition and rough street spot 👌🏼@@sidwellsk8er
I have the 52mm green dragons from Powell but mine are worn down to like 49mm and are basically lock-in shaped now. They’re the ideal wheel for me but I’m thinking of trying the nano cubics next.
I'd like to try those nano wheels too actually!
@@LeonPaxton make a video trying freestyle primo tricks and I bet it’d be fun
The trick with the nose to crooks is going into a switch suski from nose slide then swinging around to crook, the momentum works nicer… I was probably riding 44mm Hardcore dist blanks on a Real James Kelch down the local primary school in 94’ when I sussed them… getting them back now seems to be harder, maybe I can blame the 54mm Spitfires I’m on 😂
Damn dude, that definitely doesn't sound easier but I can picture what you mean lol
Yeah dude, we're used to riding wheels in the mid 50mm's now
Homie got that Tech Deck setup
It looks like a giant finger board that's for sure 😂
I have these same exact wheels I love em
How fun are they!
I still don’t understand why people though yeah let’s go from 60mm to 38mm in like between 90-93 but they were still skating pretty big boards
I think it was around the time tech skating became more popular. Once everyone saw what Rodney Mullen was doing everyone started wanting to flip their boards lol
crook noseslide is easier on a rounded off ledge. doing it on perfect coping makes it so much harder, imo great vid!
Thanks dude! I'll try it on a rounder ledge next time and that might help me roll the wheel up on top into a crooks 🙏🏼
I on 52mm and looking forward to Andy Andersons nano-cubic wheels 97A based on Powell Dragons formula. After Powell Dragons nothing else work well for streets
I'm pretty interested in those wheels as well actually!
i tried the 40mm SML wheels before and really dont get how skaters in the 90s ran those tiny bearing covers. i slipped out of grinds way too easy, got stuck on every crack/pebble, and my pop actually felt worse despite the quicker snap (i assume due to leverage or something idk). i guess the only benefit i could see is doing slappy grind combos, but i honestly have way more fun on 51 or 52mm wheels. small wheels are kinda fun for the novelty factor at first, but i honestly don't see the benefits of having them on a main steup. that's just me though.
I guess that was just normal at the time man lol
Yeah dude, the novelty definitely wears off quickly! I agree, that's why they are staying on my 10" board set up 👌🏼
Because I skate thunder 147 on a slightly wider deck (8.125), I get a lot of wheel bite. The 51mm classic is the smallest wheel I could find and they work well for me. Still get wheel bite, but not too often.
Oh damn! Maybe try some riser pads or some harder bushings dude 👌🏼
@@LeonPaxton I can’t really do different bushings or tighten my trucks too much. I have the real wooden risers, if I need them though.
interesting.
I actually enjoy my wheels a bit smaller too, but I wouldnt wanna buy them at this size.
usually I buy 54mm for street and 52mm for park and they wear down relatively quickly, cause I powerslide so much.
my dragons are currently at 48mm from 54 and they do feel great at this size.
bit slower yes, but also responsive and light.
another thing I found: you can very easily buy used wheels online (formula 4 especially) for a very low price, even when they are only down 2-3mm.
if you like smaller wheels, thats a good deal.
F4 cost 70€ currently and I got a set of conical fulls 53mm, down to 51mm for 15€
thats insane, I can skate these wheels for at least another 6 months.
Yeah this might be a bit too small lol
Damn dude, you must do a lot of power slides if they are down to 48mm!
That's true! The prices just keep going up as well so that could be a good idea
I like skating 56mm there big enough to skate transition and keeping my speed but there still usable for skating street
Yeah dude, that's a good size! I used to ride 56mm a lot but just found I wasn't able to pop my nollie's as good because i was sitting a little higher off the ground
Im from Philly. Nobody ever mentions us. I'm older but back in the early 90s. When I skated that's what we had. Tiny wheels. 20 years later I decided I wanted to try to ride again and all the wheels are big and I don't like them. I Have balance issues so I feel too far off the ground. I'm glad they're making a comeback. Have you tried Andy Andersons new deck?
Haha yeah man, it's harder to find the smaller wheels now. I haven't tried any of his boards yet but I'm loving his new wheels!
@LeonPaxton his new board does the tricks and bangs the broads for you after. If I wasn't so fat and old I'd get one. I forgot what he calls it but it will help beginners get good fast with pockets for just about every trick. I wish we had youtube back in the 80s/90s. It was impossible to find a tape. Transworld and thrasher were like nudie mags. We also had the most amazing place called love park which was designed by Kevin bacon dad who fought the city to keep it as is because he actually knew the culture and how important it was to the people who skated there. We had xgames here solely because of it and won't come back because they changed it. I hope you got something out of this
Yeah and the shape just looks so outrageous to me as well lol
Oh dude,Love Park is definitely one of the biggest iconic spots in all of skateboarding for sure!
So many legends have come out of there as well 🙌🏼
Try snot wheels little boogers 45mm with 101a less likely to flat spot as those soft little wheels.
I do actually want to try a set of those!
I've actually got a set of 39mm wheels that I'll be setting up soon too 😂
I skate 48 Spitfires. I have 46s and 47s as well but they are a bit much. I prefer the 48s to anything else a little extra smallness but crazy.
Are they the lil smokies wheels?
@@LeonPaxton No 48mm bighead spitfire
Ichpig boiiii
The best!
@@LeonPaxton word stay hungry onehunger ☝
Go check out a CCS catalog from '93, 45mm were the BIGGEST wheels you could get and the selection wasn't good, most were 40-43 that year
the way setups change over time is just fascinating to me. seems super small wheels were pretty common at that time
Damn dude, that was the biggest size back then?! That's actually crazy lol
Everything just seems to keep cycling through every decade or so lol @@scouthanamura2380
Just a weird moment in time, everybody racing to the brand new...whatever, I dunno what we were all doing, not sure anyone did. Boards got tiny really fast late 92 to 93 and then mostly stayed 7.5'-7.88' for the next 7 years but by late '94 wheels went back up a bit to 45-50's being available. I never bought into the super stupid sub 40mm thing but I did stay on 42-44's through maybe '98. I'm tiny so 14" wheelbase, 7 5/8" decks with 44's suited me pretty damn well. Go watch "Visual Sound" and see Jason Lee ride a rig like that, its surreal.
Yeah I guess it was just exciting to see all the newer shapes and sizes of things come out 🤷🏽♂
I have actually seen him skate that set up and it's so insane lol @@hydroplainsdrifter
You need a story on why the small wheel came out and why the industry went that route when it was imploding at the time..... The small wheel was created by the industry itself to keep skateboarding relevant at the time 😮
I wonder if that's the same thing going on now with all the boards becoming bigger and more crazy shapes being created 🤔
noseslide crooks is a lot easier to learn if the ledge is rounded off! you seem like a great skater should be easy for you!
True that makes sense! It would be easier to roll it up into a crook rather then popping it up 🤔
Thanks dude, I'll give it another go 🙏🏼
Spitfire makes a 48mm 99a formula four’s. They don’t flat spot really
I'm trying to find some right now actually lol
It's al in the calculus. You have to create enough flat spots, that it feels round.
Make the whole wheel a flat spot 😂
I ride the 48 mm spitfire wheels and it's not hard to skate them. And It feels like I can lock in better on crooked grinds.
Are they a classic shape?
@@LeonPaxton yes
Damn, that's sick then! I had trouble holding my crooked grinds with this small size classic shaped wheel lol
Thanks for saving me $40 US. I was going to order these in 45 mm 97 a Durometer but not after this video.
Haha yeah man I'd recommend at least a 99a with wheels this small!
Theres 48mm lock-in spitfire I think it’s the lil smokies series
Oh dude, I need to get a set of those!
60mm og classics
How's the wheel bite on those bad boys?
The issue with coming out of lock on grinds, it really helps if having less rounded wheel on the inside. Like spitfire has 48mm tablets n conicals... i had boardy cakes and i liked them but some of the shapes are very round for how small they are.
That's true, these ones were definitely a classic rounded shape
Never even seen wheels in the 40s
I might be getting some in the 30's soon lol
You just need size 42 pants now
Well I wear 36 so I'm not far off at the moment 😂
Clicked bc I suck and currently can’t shuvit on 53mm but can on 52 mm lol
You don't suck, It just takes a lot of practice dude!
53mm 101a crupie wheels. Don't flatspot ever and screech nicely
Sounds perfect!
Bro I highly recommend crupie wheels. Carlos ribiero and tiago skate them
Any of those 45 MM Wheels have always been known as a gimmick this has been known since the 70s
Looks like a big fingerboard lol
It actually does 😂
Small wheels are a GIMMICK and always have been....if you knew the REAL story behind the industry creating this nightmare, you would understand.... anything under 54mm is a joke 😂... there is a reason the industry did this and went from proven wheel size and design to the gimmick all of a sudden....and did anyone notice the industry gimmick the immediately followed??..never fell for any of it...
Not true at all. I've skated 51mm wheels for over 20 years. Just because you don't ride them does not make them a gimmick. I almost guarantee that all tech ledge skaters ride small hard wheels.
Those wheels are tiny! Very good analysis, I like ‘em and how light you say they are but the quick loss of speed , feeling all the vibrations, and lock in complications will make this a pass on my end but sure is a rad color changing wheel 🤘🏽
Yeah dude, definitely the smallest wheels I've ever come across lol
They were definitely fun but wouldn't be practical on your everyday set up
