soldierinall which song? You mean all of them in general? I could be wrong, but I am 99% certain that all of the modulation in the wall/Animals/the Final Cut/his solo record was all EHX electric mistress
Favorite flanger album is definitely “seventeen seconds” by the cure (1980). In addition to tape loops and tape flanging, they used every flanger they could get their hands on. That old Ibanez flanger looks so cool and sounds fantastic!
I think when he was with Siouxsie he had one flanger (mistress?) on a stand, maybe to help changing settings. Although Robert Smith is known for using Boss pedals, in 1980 he probably used something else. Porl Thompson used a TC flanger I think.
John McGeoch is my personal favorite flanger user, as it was pretty much his signature sound (think he used the MXR). Siouxsie and the Banshees Juju is an amazing example of his amazing use of the pedal, as are the Magazine records...The Correct Use of Soap is SOOO GOOD!
John is the reason I ever purchased an MXR Flanger! I was gonna get a Yamaha SG too, but after trying them out (and budget considerations) went with a Revstar, which despite being quite different in a lot of ways, just felt great to play.
All time best flanger tones: John McGeoch from Siouxsie & the Banshees in the Kaleidoscope record from 1980. Best of the best: the track Israel only exists because of flanging, and John was the flanger master. He used an MXR 117R but he had it not on the floor, but close to his hands so he could mess with the settings in an expressive way.
I am a flanger guy. My favourite flanger songs are from Andy Summers (The Police), mainly the early ones; David Gilmour (The wall and final cut era), "It's a mistake" from Men at work, "Barracuda" from Heart...and the list goes on. I prefer the older pedals against the newer ones. The elder have that lush, liquid and transparent tone so desirable and so classic. To me it is like a travel to my childhood because I was a child during the 80's, and that sound reminds me of my beautiful times as a kid.
Great comment and I can relate being born in 1972. Hearing flanger the Police definitely come to mind. David Gilmour, Eddie Van Halen and many many more greats have used this effect yet you hear people now a days saying no one uses those effects anymore. For those who don’t I think they’re missing out on some awesome tones. But I get it, different strokes for different folks.
Love the MXR flanger. It's just so easy to get that 'Unchained' sound out of it. It's perfect for heavy rock sounds. The Micro Flanger is pretty rad too.

I used to have a DVD Audio copy mixed in 5.1 of Yoshimi. To this day, that is the most amazing mix of an album. I still tell people about it. Great pick!
I love flangers. Had quite a collection of them a while ago, but sold most of them... rent, diapers, etc... KMD, Yamaha, boss, no name specials... some of them I used to open up and play with the trim pots inside to get some crazy sounds. Kinda like the pearl in the video. 👍🏼Wish I still had them all, but the only one I’ve never been able to part with is a maxon fl-301 (small box reissue, I think). It has a beautiful subtlety and tone that I love. Thank you for this video!
Putting multiple flangers in a chain is fun to try with various instruments/sounds. It gets extreme super quickly, but it can be tamed into very pleasing textures.
I love these videos. They are so relaxed and you get to listen a bit of every type of pedal history out there. Also, the references Josh makes always get me off guard.
Speaking of the EHX Electric Mistress, I had (wish I still did ! Arghhh !!!!) the original EHX *Polychorus* (the one with the internal power supply) and I absolutely loved the Flanger on that.
First of all, that Pearl pedal was amazing!! Secondly, I LOVE the "He Has the Box" bit! Hahahahaha soooo funny! Love that you can make fun of the things that you take seriously, which proves you don't take it TOO seriously 😉 You walk a very fine line between cork sniffer, and those that make fun of cork sniffers lol
MEEEE TOOOO, I have the the original (and seriously I have the box) I think I stayed awake for 72 hours straight when I got it. The one thing I never understood though is that there is no power switch, are you just supposed to leave it plugged in all the time or what!??
The Boss BF-3 is my go to. It has the standard sounds of the classic BF-2, but I love it for the Gate/Pan mode which I use for stutter effects. It also has a momentary mode where it’s only on when you step on it
And people don't realize that the BF-3 is also a great chorus pedal, as well as great rotary effect! The only flanger on my pedalboard. I did also like the Strymon Orbit, check it out!
The ADA was my favorite. I bought one early 80s when I heard Robin Trower used it. Has always been my fav Sounding of any flanger for it's tubular resonant sound. I thought you were going to leave it out but you saved the Best for last, ha! Great
Pat Travers used an ADA flanger for years. When Trower was using flangers, he had two different Electric Mistresses on his live pedalboard, with different settings.
The boss BF-1 was one of my first pedals! I got it a year ago from a nice lady from my church, her late husband had had a bunch of gear that she felt needed a new home! Still the greatest gifts I've ever received!

I really love the flanger sound and my go-to is the Ibanez Airplane Flanger because I feel like it has the most "organic" and unique flanger similar to the A/DA weirdly enough... my only gripe with it is how big it is. I use the take off sound all the time live, and I really wish they made a mini version of it.
Flanger album: The Crack by The Ruts. I think both a Boss CE1 in places and an Electric Mistress in others so you can use the album as a game as spot the difference. Also a special mention for flanger on bass : the song Dancing in the Moonlight by Thin Lizzy and Phil Lynott used a flanger at other times as well. For a while at least his live rig was wet dry ( I’m sure long before anyone thought of calling it that) with one dry Dynacord combo and one with flanger. No idea which flanger 🤔 presumably one with a stereo out to split between the two amps.
I know we all do it, imagine we are friends with Josh and exchanging the witty/dry banter back and forth, perhaps over a beverage. Hey man, you want to jam sometime or something... I stumbled into this channel early in the covid and its been the friend that cheers me up and also depresses me because I can’t afford most of this shit. but those 3 series pedals, only $99 bucks, maybe just maybe. maybe I’ve had a couple to many bourbons, still love you Josh, thanks for this channel.
I kinda want the logo of "he has the box" with Josh's face on a t-shirt. No one will understand it. And that makes it more amazing. I also now have that stuck in my head
"HE HAS THE BOX"! That makes it sound better, In fact it makes it LEGENDARY! Good stuff Josh:) Thought I was the only one that has all my pedal boxes, instructions and packaging
Yamaha FL10M II Flanger. One of the greatest flanger ever. Very wide controls from mild, short analog delay to massive, almost velcro-like sweeps and endless feedback. From standard guitarist flange to power electronics style noise guru sweeps. Underrated brand, underrated box and very underrated sound. Definitely a keeper. Built with sturdy components . The delay is created by MN3102/MN3207 pair. Manual and feedback controls can do really cool things as the modulated signal is fed back rather than trying to keep it clean. With certain low settings, this can be used as a analog delay too. Very, very short one, but still the option exists.
Just started watching this, hopefully it features the classic BF-2! Major part of Robert Smiths sound. John Squire of Te Stone Roses also used one live in Blackpool for huge jet engine sounds.
Because he played in Siouxsie and the Banshees for a while, Robert Smith inherited some or all of his flanger sound from the real innovator, his predecessor John McGeoch (RIP)
I don't know what it is, but the way you deliver the lines you say is so pleasing. I feel like I could listen to you talk and make bad jokes all day, and I'd laugh all day too.
For me the song that was my “WTF is that sound” was Van Halen’s Fair Warning Album with the song Unchained and the not to be neglected in mention Van Halen’s Women and Children First, with the intro to And the Cradle Will Rock...A flanger on a Yamaha electric piano. Both those were the impetus for me to go out and buy the Ibanez FL-9 Flanger, a Josh neglected classic flanger. It’s a cheery yellow with chrome highlights and four, count’em Josh, four black knobs on it. It’s compact and with judicious knob twisting, will make just about every sound you demonstrated in this video’s dubiously questionable list of classic Flangers. I have the original manual and yes, I have the original effing box mister. You’re not the only one with stinky old and decaying effects pedal boxes. 😉
Hear About it Later, Ain’t Talking Bout Love, Loss of Control , Romeo Delight...Ed was a master of flanger usage. And I agree - that rolling flange that syncs up with with the heavy chunkahs in Unchained is still a defining sound. Not just for flangers, but for all the guitar work of that era. Massive, thrilling...the sound the Balrog from LOR would make if VH did the soundtrack.
The Pearl FG-01 was the first effects pedal I ever bought back in '82. Stupidly sold it during the first wave of digital all in one boxes: Yes, Zoom 9000, I'm looking at you! However, I managed to track down another one a few years ago and it's sounds just as awesome as I remember. And, yes I have the the box, too! Great show guys. Peas and fluff, Mick x
I think you're too tall for that role, mate. You would have to be stood in a trench system to make you the right height. Barracuda by Heart. Red Barchetta by Rush. (Alex's guitar solo).
I was a big fan of the 80s big clean flanging sweeps (which I use) and Andy Summers' flage work in The Police, but very recently I rediscoved Patrick Simmons' flanger in Doobie Bros' "Natural Thing" and I LOVE it.
My first flanger was a Boss BF-3 and it's definitely one of my favourite pedals, I've recorded a few riffs with it and it sounds awesome. As for my favourite records with flanger, my go-to is always She Sells Sanctuary by The Cult but some of my other faves are The Spirit of Radio by Rush, Run Like Hell by Pink Floyd and Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love and Atomic Punk by Van Halen
The Ibanez Paul Gilbert Airplane Flange is pretty great, it's an AD/A style flange with a Takeoff button that does a sort of whammy bar type effect. Anything that the Cure used a flange on is amazing and She Sells Sanctuary by The Cult are my favorite Flanger sounds.
I've had one for years and it sounds great before dirt. The pedal is huge though, and the takeoff is unusable if there's any bedroom in the amp due to the ridiculous volume jump. If I could get the left side of the pedal in a board friendly enclosure, I'd replace it in a heartbeat.
I was afraid you were going to pass over the A/DA flanger. Now that's a legendary sound: Check out Pat Travers and Pat Thrall on "Boom Boom Out Go The Lights" and "Snortin' Whiskey". While on the subject of flangers, how about the Foxrox TZF2 through-zero flanger pedal? Hey, how about an episode on Dave and FoxRox? I've got a Captain Coconut CC2 from several years ago. It's got clones of Univibe, Fuzzface, and Octavia pedals in one package; dare I say Jimi in a box. ;-)
Josh, that bit of smile you seem always to make when making pedal collecting jokes...like you want to laugh at your own joke is totally 60% the charm of these videos.
And I third that. “Into the Light” (where he also uses the Gizmo/Gizmotron), “Happy House”, “Desert Kisses” and “Arabian Knights” are my favorite examples of McGeoch’s genius flanger playing.
Last year I was rummaging around in the loft above my mom’s garage. My brother has all kinds of stuff from a lifetime of being a jazz pianist and guitarist up there. I’m rifling around and suddenly find a vintage ADA Flanger. What?!? I asked him about it, and he doesn’t even know what it is. He claims he never saw it before. I sure as hell didn’t put it there. So, apparently Santa Claus is stashing vintage gear in my mom’s loft, and he can kiss my ass cause I’m keeping it. It’s beat to hell but works and sounds amazing. Thanks Easter Bunny. ✌️
I love the way they designed those classic pedals to look like they were from the future, now it is the future and they look like they come from the past 😀
Great rundown! Flanger is that kind of love it or hate it pedal, but I believe that it definitely serves as a melancholic nostalgic spice to the sound which is always appreciated by listeners. Personally own a BF-2 but dreaming of A/DA PBF version.
Flangers are at their best when either used to accent parts of a riff, E.g. Unchained, or for subtle sparkle, E.g. Comfortably Numb. Josh, you oughta do an episode on good multi-effects units.
The Retro-Sonic Flanger and the ThorpyFX Camoflange both sound good. By the way, you guys are awesome. I bought one of your pedals off Reverb and it needed a repair and it was turned around so fast. Seriously appreciated. Thank you again. I know that ASAP was redefined on an earlier episode.
@@RisikoAO well, my primary use of a flanger is to have it go: WOOOOOOSH!!! like a jet plane taking off. The line 6 does crazy shit, only up, only down, step crazy ness, but it doesn't scream like a jet.
Hey Josh.I have a lot of respect for you and your site.Despite having your own line of pedals, you not only promote other company's products, but are informative and in an odd way quite charming and charismatic. Cheers
Being a huge Rush fan, I was looking for a way to recreate the effect on the Red Barchetta solo. That led me to an Electra 505f (4 knob I think) Wish I still had it, oh AND the box too! 😆 Peace HDH \m/
I've been using the Danelectro Fab Flange for 13 years now. Extremely cheap pedal, cheap plastic case, lots of ground noise but still works after 13 years and I love it. Stills in my board of course. Cheers.
EdgarDizzlewicz92 Yep. He used that MXR flanger (the original one with the power cord obvs) pretty much everything he did with Siouxsie and the Banshees. He’s probably my favorite “flanger heavy” guitar player. Another is Nino Birch of New Zealand post-punk band Beat Rhythm Fashion, who also used flange on pretty much everything they did (only three legendary 7” singles, unfortunately no album).
His sound by and large is an old MXR flanger going into a chorus-rich Roland JC-120 Jazz Chorus amp. So it's flanger going into chorus basically. I experiment with it sometimes to get his sounds for fun. One thing's for sure. He thoroughly understood how to use a flanger to get whatever sound he wanted. Siouxsie, as the story goes, would ask for crazy sounds with vague descriptors like "the sound of an orchestra" and others, and John could nail whatever she would describe just dialing in that flanger. He'd actually duct tape it to his mic stand so he could control it mid-show.
@@Aaron-zh4kj Yeah, the JC-120's Chorus is also super important. From what I understand, McGeoch used both the JC-120 and a Marshall (not sure of the model) together. He also used that Yamaha SG-1000 guitar (the "Les Paul killers"), which also most likely contributed to his overall sound (humbuckers).
Also, if you watch clips from 1981/1982, you can see he has the flanger position on a mic stand so that he can manipulate the sounds much more easily too. Cool stuff.
Will someone please make a pedal called “Ned Flangers”
You'd probably get sued.
@@Kohntarkosz they couldn’t sue over that. It’s not infringing on any copyright

Lol i love that shirt I'm from Roubaix !! I'm so surprised to see the velodrome on a shirt on the other side of the planet
I've been surprised too... are you french ?
"Sebastien de Roubaix" ca sonne bien!
@@bluetv6386 Il y a aussi le François de Roubaix... grand musicien connu pour ses musiques de film !
Et maintenant "Yann de Metz"!
@@bluetv6386 Si seulement j'avais un peu de son talent..... !!!
I like the EHX Electric Mistress Stereo. It does everything the original Electric Mistress and so much more.
Steve Hillage was fond of the electric mistress, to fantastic effect.
An amazing guitarist, too often overlooked!
Christopher Murphy indeed! His synthesizer work is phenomenal
“He has the box” made my day.... oh and Nick saying “wow”. He seemed so enthused. Lol. Great show guys.
John Squire of Te Stone Roses also used one live in Blackpool for huge jet engine sounds.
cf I regret selling by bf-2 sooooo much
Because he played in Siouxsie and the Banshees for a while, Robert Smith inherited some or all of his flanger sound from the real innovator, his predecessor John McGeoch (RIP)
My cat perked up at this video. He loved seeing all those cool cardboard boxes. :-)
Boxes are better than cats.
"I have the box, look at the packaging"
*throws the box*
I love this gentle madman
Maybe it’s cause I’m mainly a drummer, but that Pearl pedal really made me smile. Wish I had one of those
Yoshimi changed my life.
The peace symbol on the danelectro so sweet
I was afraid you were going to pass over the A/DA flanger. Now that's a legendary sound: Check out Pat Travers and Pat Thrall on "Boom Boom Out Go The Lights" and "Snortin' Whiskey". While on the subject of flangers, how about the Foxrox TZF2 through-zero flanger pedal? Hey, how about an episode on Dave and FoxRox? I've got a Captain Coconut CC2 from several years ago. It's got clones of Univibe, Fuzzface, and Octavia pedals in one package; dare I say Jimi in a box. ;-)
Yes My Octron will never leave the board.
My A/DA immediately cuts high end so it had a very smooth sound. Bought it new in 1978 for not very much.
Josh, that bit of smile you seem always to make when making pedal collecting jokes...like you want to laugh at your own joke is totally 60% the charm of these videos.
Xtc's Jason and the Argonauts has a rad slow flange sound over most of the track in the weird middle section. It peaks right on the downbeat. Love it.
Yes. That swelling bit out of the solo right into “ I have watched the manimals go by...” Absolute perfection.
Pretty sure that's true tape flanging. It's the whole mix. Kind of like The Nazz.
Doobie Bro’s “Listen to the Music” has some brief flanger moments, but might actually be a finger on tape reel flange.
I loved the first setting of the FL-305
John mcgeoch was the master of the flanger
I second that
And I third that. “Into the Light” (where he also uses the Gizmo/Gizmotron), “Happy House”, “Desert Kisses” and “Arabian Knights” are my favorite examples of McGeoch’s genius flanger playing.
@@bennyshambles excellent choices!!! There's a similarity to Andy Summer's tone in "Into Tge Light" especially
Thanks for the in depth dive - lots of flavors to choose from. And special thanks for the Flaming Lips choice - truly a grand set of songs!!!
97 dislikes don’t have the box.
John McGeoch & Robert Smith are my spirit animals in all things flanging.
"I have more pedals back home" . Josh please leave some pedals for the rest of us, thank you.
YES! finally the Liqua Flange comes up as one of the best flanger pedals ever. I am a proud owner.
I had one, it did crazy crap, none of it I could use.
@@nunninkav ask yourself if it is because of the pedal, or because of your lack of imagination. I bet Nick Reinhart wold have plenty of uses for it.
@@RisikoAO well, my primary use of a flanger is to have it go: WOOOOOOSH!!! like a jet plane taking off. The line 6 does crazy shit, only up, only down, step crazy ness, but it doesn't scream like a jet.
@@RisikoAO and who is Nick Reinhart??
Legendary Mooer Eleclady man,,,,cheers from Patagonia
I have one as well. Killer pedal 👍
Hey Josh.I have a lot of respect for you and your site.Despite having your own line of pedals, you not only promote other company's products, but are informative and in an odd way quite charming and charismatic. Cheers
I discovered your channel a few days ago and it's already my go-to. "Let's see if Josh has something to say about this first." Keep on rockin'.
Being a huge Rush fan, I was looking for a way to recreate the effect on the Red Barchetta solo. That led me to an Electra 505f (4 knob I think) Wish I still had it, oh AND the box too! 😆 Peace HDH \m/
"...you need to start respecting THE BOX." Words to live by, gentlemen....words to live by.
I've been using the Danelectro Fab Flange for 13 years now. Extremely cheap pedal, cheap plastic case, lots of ground noise but still works after 13 years and I love it. Stills in my board of course. Cheers.
When I hear flanger, I think “John McGeoch”. Juju by Siouxsie and the Banshees must have flanger on every song!
@@bennyshambles Thanks for the info. That's good stuff to know! I love learning stuff like this!
Also, if you watch clips from 1981/1982, you can see he has the flanger position on a mic stand so that he can manipulate the sounds much more easily too. Cool stuff.
Josh, I swear, if you hadn’t given the A/DA proper credit I was coming down there!
;^)
Pat Travers, Puttin’ It Straight still rules!
