A ring modulator is like having a second guitarist that plays along with you, and ALWAYS hits the wrong notes. Fun.

What We Do In The Shadows - The Dalek voices literally are created using a Mooger Fooger ring mod.
Flanger = very short mod delay with feedback
Chorus = short mod delay no feedback
Vibrato = short mod delay no feedback & no dry

is there a way to get a flanger without the 'in-and-out' dopplar effect? Like a stationary fighter jet, rather than a fighter jet flying over you?

I like the sound of a flanger, but not the 'dopplar' like effect.
Maybe a flanger with an expression pedal, and just set the expression pedal to one place, and keep it in place with duct tape?
Chorus usually has a slightly longer delay time as well. More specifically flanger sits in the haas effect zone aka anything under 20ms, while chorus is generally between 20-50ms. Thats actually what causes the majority of their difference in sound, because the extremely short delay time on a flanger causes phase differences between the two signals resulting in comb filtering. Since chorus has a longer delay time you dont get the comb filter effect and instead just here the flucuation in pitch from the delay time being modulated.
@@-jank-willsonit sounds like what you're looking for is a delay pedal that can do extremely short delay times. As detailed in my above comment a delay thats under 20ms will cause an effect called comb filtering. Essentially a flanger pedal is doing the same thing but the delay time is being modulated creating the doppler like whooshing effect as the comb filter is shifted up and down the frequency range. So if you can find a delay pedal that can do those short delays or a flanger pedal that lets you turn off the modulation either would work. I know most digital delays would work and the earthquaker pyramids flanger has some settings that would work as well.
@@tezeta3725 ain't no delay pedal that's gonna do 20ms or less LOL, unless you get one custom made. (I expect my royalty check in the mail, Boss and DOD...)
I also only do analogue pedals, so maybe the pyramids flanger would be good if it is not insanely expensive, and can genuinely turn off the modulation...
Or maybe a flanger with an expression pedal, set at a single point would work.
Further explanation for Ring Modulator pedals:
Carrier frequency is what you set on the pedal (i.e. tune it to the note A - 440hz)
Modulator frequency is whatever note the guitar is playing (i.e. play the dominant 5th, like in a power chord, which would be E at 659.25hz)
The pedal takes those two, and mixes in the sum and difference of those frequencies.
So it will generate the sum frequency:
A-440hz + E-659.25hz = C# at 1099hz
(C# is a Major 3rd in the Key of A),
And it will generate the difference between the two frequencies:
A-440hz - E-659.25hz = A at 219hz
(The note A but a lower octave down).
As you can see the frequencies it generates aren't perfectly in tune, and depending what note you play it can sound more or less dissonant.
Other names for it could be:
- microtonal chord generator pedal.
- Unison Bend pedal
- Mathematicians noise rock pedal

Lower modulating frequencies (e.g., 100hz) result in a more "pitched" ring modulator sound, since the sum and difference sideband products are closer to the original pitch, while higher modulation rates yield sideband products so divergent from the original pitch that they can seem incoherent; especially if either the sum OR difference result is outside the audible range. For example, if the modulating frequency was 1000hz, for many notes, one would not be able to hear the difference frequency (too low) OR the sum (too high).
Just about ANY modulation pedal - tremolo, phaser, chorus, flanger, etc. - can be transformed into something that *sounds* like a ring modulator, simply by increasing the speed of the LFO. The vast majority of LFOs will be in the sub-audio range (

Also, the "ring" in the name "ring mod" comes from the pattern of four diodes at the center of the schematic, that looks like a little square ring. A passive ring mod is an incredibly easy circuit to make, and if you make the carrier an input jack rather than an oscillator, you can combine two guitar signals, white noise, and anything else you want. As Josh noted, it's the effect for you if you are weird!

Chorus is a staple on my board. It's ON all the time at a slow speed and moderate depth.
It really adds to the saturation of high gain.
I use a super subtle chorus for that same thing... even helps for the super nasty almost dime squeal harmonics.. that i dont pull off correctly cuz i dont use a floyd... but yeah... just that edge of on, but always on.

In just a few months I went from “modulation? Meh… chorus makes me seasick” to “I’ll try a series 3 chorus and see if I like it…wow it’s actually pretty cool” to “I can’t live without flanger” (got a ThorpyFX Camouflange that is just flat-out tone sorcery), to “I also love phaser and what about harmonic tremolo and oh my god I MUST have a univibe (Hendrix!!!!)…”
Enter the MD500. It’s now practically always on, switching between different modes *in parallel* usually straight into a Charlie Brown for pure sonic bliss.
Probably going to get a unicorn next, as I’m effectively hooked on the vibe.

If you’re really into the Uni-Vibe, I suggest trying to find one of the higher end ones to compare the differences with digital and even pedals like Josh’s Unicorn.
I’m talking builders like Sabbadius, Kingtone and a few others that are in the $300-$500 range. The pre-amps in the big boy pedals makes a big difference, whether for better or worse, but modern builds have ability to take it out and/or be true bypass instead of buffered bypass, or the preamp always on.
Fret Junkies is a good channel to see someone who is obsessed with Uni-Vibes, along with guitar stuff in general, and does videos on many of the top builders. He talks about differences, and why he likes one more or less accordingly.
Good luck. I have owned at least 12 different Uni-Vibes, and still own 3 that I keep for different reasons.
My current favorite is the Kingtone 1968.

Another one that intrigues is the Pedal Pawn Gypsy vibe.
The unicorn was (is) especially enticing because of the form factor, tap tempo, killer aesthetic (like all JHS pedals) and the fact it’s using an actual bulb driven circuit (as opposed to a digital recreation of the effect) which seems really cool for a pedal this size.
But I can definitely see the allure in a more vintage-correct unit, and as I dive deeper into the addiction I guess that is probably the inevitable path I will follow...
I know this show is more about the fascination about effects and the sound you can get instead of the background science but I think it would be quite interesting to see a flat note portrayed in a graphic of every pedal effect and see the differences of each effect, that would be an amazing way to see how they work or modulate

I got my Behringer Ultra Tremolo/Pan UT300 the last month, the reazon why I choice this pedal, aside the cheap price, was the Pan function. Contect it to 2 amplifiers is a complete pleasure.

The Wampler Terraform is a pretty exceptional multi-modulation pedal with presets and a small footprint.
The free plugin version is one of my all time favourite plugins. Incredibly good.

I've got a Nu>X (call it Nux if you will) Leslie Speaker cab sim pedal called a Roctary (it's got an octave feature as well). Quite inexpensive. Not bad at all. For those on a budget wanting to dip their toe into the Leslie rotating speaker world, it's a pretty good option. I've used it on both keyboards and guitars on recordings and it's more than a bit of fun, got some great results.
Their multimod is even better. Cab sims are kinda redundant now.
I grew up in the 80's. Burned out on Chorus effects. Phasers and Flangers I still use often. I use to turn my DOD 747 Flanger to a very subtle effect setting and just leave it on all the time. It fattened up an acoustic guitar like a magic trick.
I recently re-acquired my old DOD Flanger FX-75B from ‘85, and the nostalgia was delightful. Good to know there are others with some DOD Flanger love 🙂

Fundamentally flanging and chorusing are the same thing. In each case a copy of the signal is delayed in time by a changing amount, and that time-delayed copy is then combined with the real-time version to produce the effect. *HOWEVER* , by changing the amount of time delay even just a little, it changes our focus of attention. In the case of slightly longer delay-time in chorusing, our attention is focussed on the resulting pitch-shift produced, which creates the illusion of two musicians playing the same thing in almost-but-not-perfect unison. In the case of flanging, the shorter delay time shifts our attention away from the pitch-shifting to the notches produced (Doppler effect), as they get moved around.
Because of how human perception works, the pitch-shifting would have to be more extreme to be perceptible at very slow speeds. So you'll never find a chorus with a Speed/Rate control that sweeps as slowly as one on a flanger. As well, because our attention is focused on the pitch and not the notches, using feedback in a chorus serves no purpose, so you rarely see them on a chorus pedal.
All of that said, there IS a zone - a range of delay times - where chorus and flanger overlap, such that some flangers (like the Deluxe Electric Mistress) can produce chorus-like sounds, and some choruses can be nudged to produce flanger-like swirl, depending on the make and its respective design.
Much like the difference between chorus and vibrato, where a slightly different *shape* of sweep is optimal for each, despite operating off the same basic technology, slower flanging likes a different *shape* of sweep than faster bubbly flanging and chorus.
The smear of the comb filter is really where the difference lies. However, with some strict chorus pedals, clipping dirt going into them can really make it sound more flange-y. I'm still debating chorus placement because of that, haha.
@@ikesours6558 If a tree falls in the forest, and there is no one to hear it, does it make a sound? If a comb filter sweeps and there is little spectral content for it to insert notches into, can we hear comb-filtering?
Flangers always sound more dramatic when the signal being processed covers a large portion of the audible spectrum. The benchmark flanger sounds we love usually involved a mixed-down drum kit and maybe even a little white noise. Similarly, choruses can sound a little more "flange-ey" when their input signal is very busy and covers more of the spectrum. Distortion IS adding more harmonic content to the original signal, so no surprise that the filtering aspects of chorus seem to be more present when the input signal is a little clipped.
Phasers also create notches, but two or three notches is not really anything one could describe as a "comb". Some phasers will produce up to 6 notches (using 12 stages), but the top 3 notches tend to be wasted on guitars, since there is little spectral content from the guitar "up there". What's rather pointless on guitar, however, can sound delicious on a wider-bandwidth source, like a synth, or organ. A friend once demoed a 24-stage phaser for me, that he had made, using white noise as the signal source, and it sounded VERY flanger-like.
So why does a flanger - that produces many notches - sound so good on guitar if I say that more than 3 phaser notches is wasted? Easy. The notches prodced by a flanger are more closely spaced together, moving closer together as it produces more notches on the downward sweep. So we can hear them because they are all within the bandwidth of the guitar signal. Phaser notches remain a fixed distance apart. There are ways one can move them closer together, but it generally involves a more complex circuit.
As for chorus placement in a chain, there are certainly *preferred* positions for achieving more familiar "standardized" tones. But ANY position is musically valid if one is simply interested in producing tones of interest.

I bought the ring thing on a whim years ago. It can do the octave thing, univibe thing, chorus, and tremolo. Obviously it’s limited on how it makes those sounds. But I thought they are all pretty solid for it just being one pedal. The Manual online tells how to set the pedal for all those effects.
So, basically the world wouldn’t have Cocteau Twins in it if Chorus was never invented?

I discovered something about modulation today. It seduces me to such a mello state of mind that I lose consciousness. I had to go back & watch this video 4 times.
Josh, I just knew that I’d come out the other side of this video understanding the difference between chorus and flanger. I know a bit, but not too much. Your use of the chalkboard totally crystallized my understanding of phasing, so you closed the door on this for me, and thank you. Confoundingly, however, I’ve looked up and never really gotten the distinction between chorus and flange. I get chorus. Flange sounds similar. There’s something about feedback being fed back into the signal. Why, Josh, why?!?! Please do a short video with a chalkboard and help me understand what happens. You are my only hope.
After far too long, I realised what I love is Rotary, probably because of all the Jimmy Smith and Booker T. I've listened to over the years. I've been using a Fender Pinwheel and enjoying it massively, especially when going into stereo speakers/amps.
Josh mentions more than once in other videos how excellent fender pedals are...i thought he was getting a little choked up about it he likes them so much.

Yes, I don't consider a Wah pedal a modulated effect. It is just changing the frequency response curve. It is the same as turning the tone control, only it has more range.
So, in other words, it modulates the frequency response curve?
@@VerryBonne Well I mean you could say that, but typically modulation of analog signals are either AM such as tremolo and FM such as vibrato. You can set the wah pedal to different positions and change the frequency response curve of the signal, but it is a steady-state change. You have to actively change the pedal position to change the FR. Technically the signal itself is not modulated, just the amount of signal at certain frequencies is changed, it's really just rolled off on the edges.

I remmember when I walk in the music store and saw the boss super chorus and the chorus ensemble side by side and had a price difference of just $10 and asked to an employee what was the difference and he responded "try them" he gave me a washburn N1 don't remmember which amp was conected to and started playing the intro of Hysteria first with the super chorus and when switched to the chorus ensemble I got that tone that made other constumers come to hear me play, was spot on for that song. So this long story is to tell you that you have to try the pedals to find the right one for what you want to play or the tone you are looking for.

Great explanation of the phaser effect, never knew this was behind it.
You can buy a Line6 M5 pedal that has the big MM4 modulation pedal "crammed" inside along the other big pedals (Delay, Distortion, Filter modelers) for 120 euros/dollars. It can do one effect at a time but you don't turn on Flanger, Chorus and Phaser together. I bought it for modulation effects. I played with all the modulation types and I found out that the MXR Flanger model "feels" better to what I play distorted and Analog Chorus or Dimension C model for clean. It even has an A/DA Flanger model that the big MM4 doesn't. With a pedal like this you can use what suites the part you're playing plus you have 10 presets to save your favourites.
The M5 is super slept on. It's got great sounds in it. I bought it for the same reasons, and I've been impressed with amount of useable effects in this pedal.

TC Shaker price in Brazil: a month minimum wage...
There are some very insane shipping costs in Argentina and Brazil, which make it really difficult for one man operations to get their pedals to the U.S. or Europe.
The Cosmic Phaser and Robotic Flanger made by retroheadfx, are analog pedals they have functionality far beyond even some of the most praised boutique builders. Compare the Robotic Flanger to the Camoflange by Thorpe, and it does everything the Thorpy can and more, for less than half the price, but because of shipping no one really knows about them.
They had them priced at about $150 US dollars, but shipping for even one pedal is almost that much. They’ve taken the flanger off the website now. Guess I waited too long to decide whether to buy both pedals and just eat the shipping.
The Cosmic Phaser has so many options fir an analog effect it’s amazing, including being a killer optical Trem, and pretty good uni-vibe sounds.

You can by a BF2 for 70 dollars bucks and now ee have some great builders in Brazil. I recently bought a Ibanez FL9 for 60 dollars, cheaper than USA. So, se have many used options. We have a brand called oliver that was a rembrand of BOSS on the 80s and 90s. It’s the same circuit, with same sound of BF2, It coasts about 40 dollars used. Se have many players that moved to digital.
All of them! I got myself walrus audio Julia and Polychrome. They implement each other perfectly!

I purchased a Diamond Tremolo, and it has gotta-be: The Most Underrated pedal-ever = thick, analog, phenomenal sounding tremolo.
I'd love to see you do a deep dive on some Source Audio effects like the Ultrawave, Ventris, Kingmaker/Aftershock, and Nemesis. Many of these are excellent options for consolidating your pedalboard due to their ability to store multiple presets.

I was always under the impression that the Flanger was specifically invented so Omar Rodriguez Lopez could finish writing the intro to Roulette Dares.... jokes aside though I recently got a EHX Eddy and it is a beautiful analog chorus/vibrato with tons of options. the vibrato has pretty much become an always on pedal for me! worth checking out if youre in the market for one
I’ve had an itch to just buy one because it’s not too expensive, and has some cool features. I’m just not sure if I want a straight up Chorus, a Pitch Vibrato or a nice Flanger that can do a basic Chorus sound.
@@CorbCorbin its switchable between chorus and pitch vibrato with the basic rate and depth functions (it goes from barely on to completely unusable so you can make it sound any way you like really) and its also got an envelope/ lfo function to change the type of waveform. it also has a nice tone and volume that can almost drive your signal like a boost
Roulette Dares is actually a MoogerFooger Ring Mod! I’ve always wanted one, but they’re crazy expensive now

Ringmod sounds like something, that can work crazy good with fuzz.
I agree on the Line 6 MM 4 (Modulation Modeler). It’s amazing, especially with the expression pedal. I have a Helix now and it features everything on this series of pedals but I still can’t give mine up (+ DL4). I wish you’d do an episode or series dedicated to this pedal line. Including the less lesser knowns FM4 & DM4.
I watched this video when I first started getting into pedals. Now I’m about to give a seminar on them, and these explanations really helped. Thanks man.
Modulation pedals are fine by themselves, but modulation pedals with an expression pedal to control the rate is really the best.
I feel like it's pretty much de rigueur to have a foot pedal with the effects. You can do way more interesting stuff with it, to the point it feels like the effects pedals on their own are incomplete.
The 1970's: a lotta things happened, but basically modulation happened. I remember it so very well. It was absolutely brilliant. So much ground covered. So much development, so much growth...
The entertainment value, and quality of these videos is just crazy good! So informative i wanna like bookmark all of them!

EHX Deluxe Electric Mistress. It's the OG Chorusing Flanger. That's what Summers actually used. I think that Baracuda was recorded with the ADA Flanger (Howard Leese???) But the Mistress can get there.
Barracuda was recorded with a one of a kind custom made flanger utilizing Panasonic 4096 chip. That's what Howard Leese said in an interview. Allegedly, one of his former techs now owns that flanger.

i don't like people demoing flanger, you only need to put everything low and you get this nice flowing water sound, to use the electric mistress you gotta keep everything under half way everything should be around 9:00 speed should be less than 9:00 colour should be at 9:00 and range should be over 9:00 by a little bit
I love using every setting really subtle, and then crank the depth. Lol

Hey there josh, I was wondering if you could make a “chorus” by running a vibrato in parallel with your dry signal? Like using a splitter with a vibrato on one side and your dry signal on the other side, then sum that together into your amp, would that work?
I aint josh, but Yes you can!! I have done it using two amps and it sounds fantastic, you would need a dry/wet box in order to do it with one amp though, but its possible

I bought the Hyper Phaser, Turbo Flanger, and Chorus Factory from Digitech. Each has 7 modes and really helped me get a better understanding of each effect.
It seems like TC Electronics modulation pedals never get enough love. Their phaser is really good, gets vintagey and also can be very crazy too. And on most you can modify your sound with your phone, pretty cool. Favorite modulation combo is a EHX chorus into a Phase 90. Great video!!
pitch/phase vibratos are underrated as well. most people think of them as a cheap way budget pedal companies can make a 'univibe' pedal, while not being a 'true' univibe.
But they are a unique sound in their own right, pretty much a phaser than has been shaped to sound like tremolo/vibrato thing.
I have just learned that I will never need a ring modulator. It sounds like Ross Geller trying to find his sound.
Edit: However my favorite modulation is call "octoverb" on the Line 6 Helix

my first ever pedal is a maxon pdm1 and it was too much at the time, but helped me a great deal with understanding how modulation works

i love the ring modulator, honestly it's cool to have 2 amps with 2 ring modulators set at different frequencies or whatever, it's weird noise heaven?

Perfect timing - I have a boss pedal sized hole in the effects loops part of my pedal board. Miku Stomp is in the lead for taking that spot but we’ll just have to see won’t we.
I love that whole series of TC pedals. Hall of Fame, Flashback, Viscous Vibe, Shaker. Ditto looper. Alter ego. All amazing pedals
I am real lousy on handy jobs that require fine work like soldering etc. But back in the 80ies, while at school, I made a Ring Modulator as an electronics project. Got some good help from an engineer and we got it to work. Don 't rememeber where I left it...
Really good recommendation from record time. I'd never heard Alison's Halo before but really enjoyed them.
Add that to the Mineral recommendation from a week or two ago and you are absolutely killing it on suggestions that push my buttons lately.
