4.5L owner here 👋🏼 Had my GT4 converted nearly exactly a year ago (including new gear ratios), and it’s everything Matt said in this review and more. It’s a much tauter, more involved car now, with heaps of torque everywhere in the rev range. BTW DeMan been doing this for 3+ years, they do amazing work and their development is without a doubt, without shortcuts. But its worth mentioning the base cost of the mod at $28K to $35K depending on end results. Also worth noting the Porsche 718 GT4RS is expected to come out this year. With a 4.5L, PDK and 500hp+. With an estimated average cost of a new 718 GT4 at $99.2K + $28K in mods and loss of factory warranty, and you are about where the RS is expected to sell for. With warranty. A used 981 GT4 like mine can be add for about $85-90K. But worth consider it if I could keep the original engine unmolested and have a drop in a CRATE engine. That would cost about $15K more than BORING out the original block. Or if you blow the engine out of warranty, and if the block is salvageable. This is a great option.
The other thing - would the 4.5L pass emissions in all 50 states? I guess a motorsports shop isn't subject to the same emissions and fuel efficiency restrictions than an OEM like Porsche would be, which lets them have a more aggressive drivetrain. In that sense, the 718 GT4RS would be fully compliant but wouldn't sound anywhere as good as this 4.5L thanks to the OPFs. EDIT: According to Rick DeMan on Rennlist, a few customers out in CA have been able to pass emissions and register the car.
@@SP-nw1et With the "right" price, you can in fact pass CA emissions with just about anything. Simply need a friend with a similar original car to show up at the same time as the appointment.
You can either buy an engine complete from Deman (the "drop in a crate engine") or you can have Deman bore out YOUR engine (the "bore out your engine" part). These are neither inconsistent with each other, nor mutually exclusive. Nice attempt at the call out though, though completely incorrect in its basis.
I've always loved the Cayman! The standard GT4 seems pretty great, this is something else! I love the way that this sounds going through those short gears! I imagine this is also very expensive! If it can come in under the cost of a new GT3 that would make this the Porsche to have!
I remember when Porsche first introduced the Boxter, and the first thing I thought was how smart a step that was from an engineering perspective. And, when they introduced the Caymen, I thought that it's it!!! A modern day Spyder, open top or as a coupe. I love this car! :)
I love the 718 Cayman GT4 as it is still Porsche's smallest car. I love what DeMan has done in developing this car to a higher potential than Porsche ever will against its stable mate, the 911. This now makes for a smaller, faster and more powerful package that is more enjoyable.
My dream car is the Cayman GT4... I think I know what I'm gonna do to it in the event that I get it one day. Turn it into a 4.5l engine. That thing is sick
Would be nice to see a face off on track even though I can't imagine it getting even close to a 991.2 GT3 RS. Amazing car though, not taking anything away from what Deman has achieved. Matt on point as always.

@@RunningFast I even remember seeing some explanation there is no space (for some reason) inside housing for different 1st and 2nd gear. This is really good info :)
Amazing car! I'd say the music was a bit loud at times, and REMEMBER it's a car vid! When you have exhaust noise as sweet as the Cayman you don't need music. The only music we're here to hear is the car.
That looked a lot like Harriman but then I saw "thanks to city of Orangetown". So I have to surmise that you were somewhere in Blauvelt State Park on Tweed Blvd and Park Road? Perhaps Causland Mountain too? I grew up doing fun things in cars there....not always just driving. Hhaha.
Nice! As a 911 owner who loves Boxsters, this is what I hoped for when back seat for kids is no longer a requirement. My last thoughts to someday bother with a used Ferrari are almost crushed entirely
I was looking forward to this video after hearing about this car on the tst podcast so many times and if I have enough money 10-15 years from now I would buy/get one built in a heartbeat
I had the RUF CTR yellowbird video recommended right after. If this is anything like a RUF... please do a comparison. Like a head to head or something where you just have arguments between hosts for a few hours while driving them around. I think the fact that porche just sticks a manual in their cars itself is a feat along with this conversion being about turing the gear ratios. Cool stuff.
I had the option of buying a pre-owned Porsche approved 911 Turbo S, but I bought a brand new 718 GTS (the GT4 is a bit too much for daily driving...). That's how great this thing drives. With 500HP, this thing will be untouchable.

Oh it’s TUNED with Matt... Wait no, now it’s MODIFIED
I’m totally okay with this. More please!!!
Matt excellent vid as usual, sounds like DeMan knocked it outta the park, No Replacement for Displacement!
I've always loved the Cayman! The standard GT4 seems pretty great, this is something else! I love the way that this sounds going through those short gears! I imagine this is also very expensive! If it can come in under the cost of a new GT3 that would make this the Porsche to have!
Comes in well under the cost, that's the beauty of it!
I remember when Porsche first introduced the Boxter, and the first thing I thought was how smart a step that was from an engineering perspective. And, when they introduced the Caymen, I thought that it's it!!! A modern day Spyder, open top or as a coupe. I love this car! :)
This is just such a very cool car! My next Porsche will be a Cayman S with a 6 Spd but god would I ever love to be able to do this!!!!! Great video!
That puts it over the line, I’m getting a GT4 and doing this. Hey honey, I have something I need to buy....
So sick. Nice piece Matt.
The 924/944 was doing this with the I4 back in the 80s. Torque was instant with those.
OH HELL YEAH...Hagerty brought back my favourite show from /Drive. Hagerty, it's official. I love you guys.
DeMan is The Man!! I need this car 🚀
That 959 on the lift at the back of the shop. Nice!
Gotta say, this Hagerty channel feels a lot like what Drive used to be back in the day. Love it.
Thank you for being a fan, Alex!
I love the 718 Cayman GT4 as it is still Porsche's smallest car. I love what DeMan has done in developing this car to a higher potential than Porsche ever will against its stable mate, the 911. This now makes for a smaller, faster and more powerful package that is more enjoyable.
easily the best sounding gt4 I've heard wow
My dream car is the Cayman GT4... I think I know what I'm gonna do to it in the event that I get it one day.
Turn it into a 4.5l engine. That thing is sick
Sounds like a 911 RSR (after the 2017 exhaust uncorking). Absolutely glorious!
Would be nice to see a face off on track even though I can't imagine it getting even close to a 991.2 GT3 RS. Amazing car though, not taking anything away from what Deman has achieved. Matt on point as always.
If only there was a manual RS
There's a yt video. It walks a GT3rs on track 🔥
For 6 years I read and hear that it is impossible to shorten 2nd gear in these gearboxes because it is on the shaft. Turns out it is possible :)
I had the first short 2-5 gear set from Deman in my car years ago! No issues, it's awesome. Possible, reliable, awesome, changes the entire driving experience.
@@RunningFast
I even remember seeing some explanation there is no space (for some reason) inside housing for different 1st and 2nd gear.
This is really good info :)
@@tomasz899 Yes... this line about the "no space in the transmission" - I always thought that was a bit laughable (and never believed it)
With the stock engine or the 4.5L? @Tomasz
The sound it makes is music to my ears!
Really good video but maybe a little bit overedited and overcut, we like Matt - that's why you got him - let us listen to what he has to say.
Amazing car! I'd say the music was a bit loud at times, and REMEMBER it's a car vid! When you have exhaust noise as sweet as the Cayman you don't need music. The only music we're here to hear is the car.
This car DeMands respect. ..... I'll see myself out.
@Audifyle .. We're here all week,,, and remember to tip your bartender & wait-staff. . Bada bing!
Doing a great job Hagerty! Maybe the best automotive videos on you tube!
Nice Video. Production quality and content. Both A+
That looked a lot like Harriman but then I saw "thanks to city of Orangetown". So I have to surmise that you were somewhere in Blauvelt State Park on Tweed Blvd and Park Road? Perhaps Causland Mountain too? I grew up doing fun things in cars there....not always just driving. Hhaha.
It's Tweed 👍🏼
That's a proper monster of an engine.
Dear lord that sounds amazing!!
Best one yet! You rock Matt.
Nice! As a 911 owner who loves Boxsters, this is what I hoped for when back seat for kids is no longer a requirement. My last thoughts to someday bother with a used Ferrari are almost crushed entirely
I may travel to the States to get this done to my 2020 once she's out of warranty. Thanks Matt and Mr. DeMan.
I was looking forward to this video after hearing about this car on the tst podcast so many times and if I have enough money 10-15 years from now I would buy/get one built in a heartbeat
After this video, this tuning shop is going to get a lot more Deman(d) for their work.
Dude... Nice!
@@nicholaszivich7589 lol thanks!
Cool stuff.
Oh man I am in love with this beast. Make it Blue and I am so sold!
Everyone should hire Matt. Hagerty is wise.
This is literally the car of my dreams
For all those curious, you can do the same engine work to the 997.2 gts / any 997.2 carrera
I already reached out to DeMan
Price for this operation? Sounds expensive all these goodies.
996 options?
@@warboyrb he's done 4L 996's before!
Any 9A1 block can be converted, which includes all 997.2/987.2 cars, and all 991/981 models 👍🏼
I can't believe the engines can take this kind of modification. What an amazing car.
Classic detuning by Porsche. In that gen the all the GT3 and GT4 and Turbo basically used the same block so a shocking amount of potential...
Since they managed to bore it out that much, the rest was not that difficult.
I definitely can't afford one of these, but I'm pretty sure I can afford to upgrade a 987 to a 3.8. Thanks for confirming that's an excellent idea.
yes! finally i waited so long for this episode since first hearing it on the podcast
I’ve been waiting for this one
I had the option of buying a pre-owned Porsche approved 911 Turbo S, but I bought a brand new 718 GTS (the GT4 is a bit too much for daily driving...). That's how great this thing drives. With 500HP, this thing will be untouchable.
