You know when I heard that about Neil when I was in high school, I would never ask for a famous person's autograph, nor did I ever introduce myself. I learned to respect their privacy.
The funny thing is, if you wrote Neil a letter, there was a great chance that he would respond to you. A friend of mine in highschool did a thesis on 2112 and sent a copy to Neil, and not only did he write a 2 page response to my friends thesis, he even corrected his grammer and punctuation. The professor was a good man.

I could listen to Jack Black talk about Rush all day. Sad that it's over but so glad the music and lyrics were in my life. Literally the soundtrack of my life. Great musicians but better men.
The world lost a legend when Neil past. David Grohl gave the best tribute i have read so far. I have nothing but respect for Rush, they were not only outstanding musician's, but they did not sellout like the majority of the music industry does.
I personally met Neil in Beamsville, ON. An old friend and I were at a farmers market. Did not realize that my friend grew up with him and played bass with him in high school. He was a very soft spoken and friendly person. You can tell from meeting him that Neil is a shy, yet reserved person. God Bless him. Rest in peace....
I’m a heavy metal drummer who was never into rush (please forgive me) but anyone who ever played drums and understands the technique of playing and the feel of the groove will agree 100% that Neil peart is one of THE GREATEST TO EVER DO IT.!

As a stereo salesman at a sound shop in Latrobe PA, I sold so many stereos playing cuts from Rush albums it wasn't funny. "Bastille Day" from Caress of Steel was a major impact. Thank You Rush!
The drum kit is a shield or a bunker. Neil like a lot of drummers aren’t people persons. Frontmen are because they have the in your face position in the band to interact with the crowd. Neil was a a master taken way before his time. He will always be a legend.
As s drummer, agreed. I've played hundreds of gigs and have no issues getting up there and playing in front of a crowd. Came out from behind the drums while one of the guitar players got behind the kit for me to sing a cover song. I freaked out. I mean, I did it... but I was freaking the entire time in my head. Big difference once you get out from behind that kit. It really is a shield, that was a great way to put it.
Gotta say-every time I see this, I laugh harder at Alex at the table with Geddy when the lady pushes him aside for Geddy’s signature. Just want to give him a kiss on the cheek for being the BEST comedian ever.
Agree…and it’s a perfect illustration of why Ged and Alex do the meet and greets and are more comfortable in public and Neil is not. That waitress was incredibly rude. She is at work and they came in to eat and relax. If you want to tell them you’re a fan…fine. Immediately follow that up with, “What can I get you, hon? Care to “dine on honey dew”, perhaps?” You do not ask for autographs. You do not ask for multiple autographs. And you do not wedge a man out of the way like that to get to another man! If that was Neil, they would have burned the tape because he would not have rolled his eyes like Alex and let her embarrass them. Neil would have had a nasty meltdown.

It amazes me how people don't understand the concept of being shy... Just like Neil said, it has nothing to do with being sour, anti-social, rude, in a bad mood or whatever. it's just that it feels uncomfortable with strangers around. You wouldn't think it's that hard to understand.
Rush is my favorite Prog Rock band. They have excellent musicianship. They're great songwriters. Neil Peart was the best lyricist & the greatest drummer. RIP Neil Peart

This is a band in my younger days was very special to me and over the years. I have transcribed all of AL guitar music and played it and read all the books that Niel got his ideas from and watched Getty play amazing music. Brought every record probably two or three times. I have a cd's with there music on it in my car for probably about over 15 years. With me being 54 now they are far more much awesome. The thing with me is they really are great epic musicians. Their private life is for them and I wish them very well. Thank You Rush
Henry Rollins once said that performing music for a crowd felt like a duty. He wanted to express his feelings and emotions through the music on stage, then exit left and get back on the bus. It makes sense. If you love what you do, you wanna do it the best you've ever done every time. And not let the fame and recognition cloud your imagination and focus. My father introduced me to Rush at a very young age, and I can never repay him for that. RIP Professor.
Rush fans love the man and appreciate how good he is, but the rock scene marginalised his abilities and what he did for the band. The rock scene marginalised Rush’s greatness in general. They were an exceptional band and super talented musicians, and it’s great that they were as successful as they were, but I always thought they didn’t quite get their due, especially Lifeson.
I grew up in the 70's and started listening to Rush in high school when A Farewell to Kings came out. I saw them 6 or 7 times over the next few years, incredible musicians! They were really a great band and always striving to get better at playing and writing. Thanks guys!
I am filled with nothing but sadness at Neil’s passing but also I am full of respect for Geddy, Alex and the rest of the Rush ‘machine’ that allowed Neil to die quietly and privately, the way that he chose to live. Kudos to them.

RUSH, saw them 3 times, on 3 different tours and they were fantastic every time. Love the boys and will miss the 3 of them together playing. Certainly one of the best bands to come out of North America ever!!! 3 guys and all that music, PRICELESS!!!
Holy crap, they're HUMAN!!!!Well, not really, but I've seen them live 11 times, and while on stage they are something far beyond human. If you have also seen them live, you get it. If not, take my word for it. I'm just happy I got to take both of my sons to a few Rush shows before they retired. Nothing more special than seeing your 9 year-old son, with tears pouring down his face, as they start playing his favorite song (Time Stand Still), and you ask him "What's the matter?" - and he screams, "I'm just SOOOO happy!!!" Best parenting memory ever. Period. Now I have tears rolling down my face as I type this and remember a moment I will never forget.
A great stort about your son. I have two sons but Rush finished touring when they were too young to go. I'm still trying to get them to appreciate this phenomenal band and three genuinely humble, humane men.
I was about 18 when I bumped into Neil in London (I was there for a Styx gig), the week before I’d travelled from Durham to Chester to watch them hitch hiking most of the way, I recognised him and just asked if he was Neil Peart and he just grumpily said “not today” and walked off, what a miserable c**t. I still love Rush 😁👍

Maybe, he could have said, "I am, thanks for noticing, I'm busy and enjoy your day". My Aunt and uncle used to live in Willowdale, in Toronto, Rush is awesome, big inspiration as teen teaching myself guitar. Canada rocks Rush rocks Neil Peart is a legend! Gone not forgotten
Tonight I heard of Neil's passing. So unbelievably sad. After watching this video I realized how much we were alike. Even if I had the opportunity of a backstage pass at a rush show I don't think I would have talked to him. Even if he was there. RIP Professor.
Linda Aguilar it’s the age we live in ... lost so many of my heroes in the past few years, Emerson, Lake, Squire, Wetton, Bowie and now Neil ... so hard to come to terms with, but accept it we must. I’ll remember the shows as long as I’m here 🕯😔🧺
RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! I'm exactly the same as Neil...classic introvert which helps with his writing! I wouldn't seek out a meeting with any of them, would never bother them if I saw them somewhere (nod, wave, leave them alone)....but would have loved a long, real conversation without any fuss; maybe over a beer or two, talking to Neil about biking around and what he'd seen on his travels. Imagine that......awesome.
I never met any of the guys from Rush but if I did and got the cold shoulder from Neil I’d still love him just the same. I completely understand his shyness. I’m basically the same way.
If Neil was not such an introvert his skill level would not be where it is today.... He focused on the music plain and simple. Probably a cool cat to hang with but it takes just the right person to get the invitation. I wouldn't want him to be any other way.....
Thank you SO much for posting this segment! I have Neil's book (which is great), but seeing him and the others talk about that time period brings it into an even more profound focus. Bless them all- I'm so glad they came back to give us more music.
Pancer's Deli, where they went after their very first gig together long ago. They still go back there after all these years......nice. It obviously has a special place in their hearts.
I used to be good friends of the late great Clive Burr from Iron Maiden. Clive told me that Neil Peart was one of his true heroes. He told me back in his Maiden days he got to meet Peart and told him how much he admired him and his work. I can't remember the exact words Clive told me, but basically Peart wasn't at all receptive to Clive's gushing compliments and stormed off!
Clive was the reason I became a drummer. I even had my set like his, with the little tom perched on top of the others. I think Clive is the unsung master of metal drumming. Only drummers can see just how sophisticated he was, or it seems that way.
I’m not saying Neil should have felt the need to explain himself for not keeping out of the public eye, but the fact that he did explain it was very big of him. He has just as much right to privacy and personal space as you or I do and celebrity does not change that, no matter how famous you are. I completely understand, and his reasoning is so well explained by him. It’s been four years and I still can’t believe he’s really gone.
We all grew up thinking it was "Pert". Now all the sudden we have to completely change that? To me if you say it the correct way you're a freakin show-off wanker. Real men say Pert. Dweebs say PEEEEIIIRYYYYYRRRTT.

I got to meet Neil and actually TALK with him back in 1987... and I got to tell him "I KNOW that fame and adulation can make you uncomfortable... but PLEASE also try to understand... the us "FANS"... we are THANKFUL and GREATFUL for what you and RUSH have brought us! And as that might make you uncomfortable... you have ALSO made OUR LIFES BETTER In ways you may not EVER Understand?! If I wanted to practice my drums... I HAD to get ALL of my homework DONE AND Have good grades! THIS was the trade off that MY parents put in place for my being allowed to practice drumming! So, I made SURE my homework was DONE in school that day AND I made SURE I was in the A to B grades average BECAUSE my DRUMMING and MUSIC were SO Important to me! NOT to mention that I became a better READER, Writer AND Lover of BOOKS BECAUSE of you! So you see... we don't want to make you feel embarrassed or uncomfortable... we just want to THANK you for what you have given us and done for us! Simple as that!" He laughed... but I know he thought about it... because he told me that he had. And that it touched him that I was so emotional about it. And that he really didn't realize those "Little Things" that he caused and effected in our lives! Because ALL of my friends whom most are also musicians ALSO had parents that told them almost the EXACT same thing! AND Also became better students, Readers AND PEOPLE BECAUSE of RUSH! Last time I was at that same deli (Pancers on Bathurst Street), I had the luxury of eating beside George Chuvalo, Eddie Shack and Red Kelly (R.I.P.). If you are ever in Toronto or live there and haven't tried it yet, GO! Amazing food.That place has some history and fed many a legend. I think the first time Rush made money, that's where they went to spend it.
I tended bar at The Hideout in Dubuque, Iowa, between 1998-2000. A tall guy came in on a BMW motorcycle one late afternoon -- saw mostly Harleys so it stood out. You won't believe it, but yes, it was Neil. We talked for a couple of hours, and it eventually hit me who I was talking with. I was a fan, not a huge fan, but definitely a fan. I asked Neil to sign a menu and include the date. He graciously agreed and went on his way. It is strange for me to hear that he was reticent to speak with fans in the context of a pre-concert setting. He was talkative but seemed sad to me, and said he was looking for a new chapter in life.
That was the Years around when His Daughter was killed in a car accident and His wife died shortly after.He took a long motorcycle trip for a few Years and everyone in the Rush camp was super concerned about Him.There is a chapter about it from this documentary called " Beyond the lighted stage"
If this is true, this shows how nice he is randomly in public if you dont go all superstar on him. He wants real fans that want to talk about the band or drumming, not someone that says they like RUSH when they dont even know Xanadu or how to play an instrument. going by memory Neil enjoyed motorcycles. There was an article in Cycle/Cycle world about one of the writers meeting him and riding with him between gigs.

I started listening to Rush about two years before the Aqua Teen movie came out and thought the band was awesome. Never forget The Drum Solo Of Life!!!

RUSH, saw them 3 times, on 3 different tours and they were fantastic every time. Love the boys and will miss the 3 of them together playing. Certainly one of the best bands to come out of North America ever!!! 3 guys and all that music, PRICELESS!!!

Holy crap, they're HUMAN!!!!Well, not really, but I've seen them live 11 times, and while on stage they are something far beyond human. If you have also seen them live, you get it. If not, take my word for it. I'm just happy I got to take both of my sons to a few Rush shows before they retired. Nothing more special than seeing your 9 year-old son, with tears pouring down his face, as they start playing his favorite song (Time Stand Still), and you ask him "What's the matter?" - and he screams, "I'm just SOOOO happy!!!" Best parenting memory ever. Period. Now I have tears rolling down my face as I type this and remember a moment I will never forget.
A great stort about your son. I have two sons but Rush finished touring when they were too young to go. I'm still trying to get them to appreciate this phenomenal band and three genuinely humble, humane men.

I was about 18 when I bumped into Neil in London (I was there for a Styx gig), the week before I’d travelled from Durham to Chester to watch them hitch hiking most of the way, I recognised him and just asked if he was Neil Peart and he just grumpily said “not today” and walked off, what a miserable c**t.

Tonight I heard of Neil's passing. So unbelievably sad. After watching this video I realized how much we were alike. Even if I had the opportunity of a backstage pass at a rush show I don't think I would have talked to him. Even if he was there. RIP Professor.

A Simple Genius to those who love Rock music!
RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR!

I'm exactly the same as Neil...classic introvert which helps with his writing! I wouldn't seek out a meeting with any of them, would never bother them if I saw them somewhere (nod, wave, leave them alone)....but would have loved a long, real conversation without any fuss; maybe over a beer or two, talking to Neil about biking around and what he'd seen on his travels. Imagine that......awesome.

Pancer's Deli, where they went after their very first gig together long ago. They still go back there after all these years......nice. It obviously has a special place in their hearts.
I used to be good friends of the late great Clive Burr from Iron Maiden. Clive told me that Neil Peart was one of his true heroes. He told me back in his Maiden days he got to meet Peart and told him how much he admired him and his work. I can't remember the exact words Clive told me, but basically Peart wasn't at all receptive to Clive's gushing compliments and stormed off!
Clive was the reason I became a drummer. I even had my set like his, with the little tom perched on top of the others. I think Clive is the unsung master of metal drumming. Only drummers can see just how sophisticated he was, or it seems that way.
RIP Neal you will be missed
I’m not saying Neil should have felt the need to explain himself for not keeping out of the public eye, but the fact that he did explain it was very big of him. He has just as much right to privacy and personal space as you or I do and celebrity does not change that, no matter how famous you are. I completely understand, and his reasoning is so well explained by him.

I got to meet Neil and actually TALK with him back in 1987... and I got to tell him "I KNOW that fame and adulation can make you uncomfortable... but PLEASE also try to understand... the us "FANS"... we are THANKFUL and GREATFUL for what you and RUSH have brought us! And as that might make you uncomfortable... you have ALSO made OUR LIFES BETTER In ways you may not EVER Understand?! If I wanted to practice my drums... I HAD to get ALL of my homework DONE AND Have good grades! THIS was the trade off that MY parents put in place for my being allowed to practice drumming! So, I made SURE my homework was DONE in school that day AND I made SURE I was in the A to B grades average BECAUSE my DRUMMING and MUSIC were SO Important to me! NOT to mention that I became a better READER, Writer AND Lover of BOOKS BECAUSE of you!

He laughed... but I know he thought about it... because he told me that he had. And that it touched him that I was so emotional about it. And that he really didn't realize those "Little Things" that he caused and effected in our lives! Because ALL of my friends whom most are also musicians ALSO had parents that told them almost the EXACT same thing! AND Also became better students, Readers AND PEOPLE BECAUSE of RUSH!

Last time I was at that same deli (Pancers on Bathurst Street), I had the luxury of eating beside George Chuvalo, Eddie Shack and Red Kelly (R.I.P.). If you are ever in Toronto or live there and haven't tried it yet, GO! Amazing food.That place has some history and fed many a legend.
I think the first time Rush made money, that's where they went to spend it.

I read a lot of comments on U tube on a world of different subjects, find Rush to be very inspiring , but this is the best I have ever seen! Love it!
I grew-up in The Great White North. Rush was part of that!
I tended bar at The Hideout in Dubuque, Iowa, between 1998-2000. A tall guy came in on a BMW motorcycle one late afternoon -- saw mostly Harleys so it stood out. You won't believe it, but yes, it was Neil. We talked for a couple of hours, and it eventually hit me who I was talking with. I was a fan, not a huge fan, but definitely a fan. I asked Neil to sign a menu and include the date. He graciously agreed and went on his way. It is strange for me to hear that he was reticent to speak with fans in the context of a pre-concert setting. He was talkative but seemed sad to me, and said he was looking for a new chapter in life.
That was the Years around when His Daughter was killed in a car accident and His wife died shortly after.He took a long motorcycle trip for a few Years and everyone in the Rush camp was super concerned about Him.There is a chapter about it from this documentary called " Beyond the lighted stage"
If this is true, this shows how nice he is randomly in public if you dont go all superstar on him. He wants real fans that want to talk about the band or drumming, not someone that says they like RUSH when they dont even know Xanadu or how to play an instrument. If i was Geddy i would be kinda pissed from that older waitress. Like i would be somewhere in the middle between Geddy and Neil.

going by memory Neil enjoyed motorcycles. There was an article in Cycle/Cycle world about one of the writers meeting him and riding with him between gigs.
