It’s one of the things that really drives us to connect with these amazing authors on Strombo’s Lit, the book club that I collaborate with Apple Books on - we’ve even amped up to an audiobook!
So to start this year with a bang - our first read for 2024 is Geddy Lee's latest 'My Effin Life,’ a no-holds-barred journey as gritty and real as the essence of rock n' roll itself, filled with tales of love, loss, and the hard-hitting truths of life.
I'm thrilled to bring to you an exclusive chat I had with Geddy right from my home. Geddy's going to peel back the layers on some deeply personal stuff - like his parents' immigrant journey after the horrors of the Holocaust, the meteoric rise of Rush (yeah, the legendary Canadian band that has sold over 40 million records!), and some heartfelt stories about the people he holds dear.

George, it was so heartfelt and heartwarming. Your reactions to Geddy’s responses and his to your questions are what great interviews are about. And there is a beauty in your obvious friendship. The whole topic of closure for the Rush fan is something that doesn’t ever come up and Geddy’s tour has unwittingly helped us/me enormously. I don’t think the fans knew how much they needed “this” or how much Geddy did. I was lucky enough to see him in LA too and with my best friend, and it was cathartic for both of us which I didn’t expect. Well done, George. Thank you. And thanks to Ged. Cheers!

Strombo does the best interviews with the members of Rush. This is easily the best interview Geddy has ever done. The fact that Geddy understood that on some level, we as fans, needed some closure is so appreciated.
At the beginning of these show dates, I was actually saying the same thing. Sure… it’s Geddy promoting his new book, and all of that. But it’s also much more than just that
These shows make for a great place where fans all get to meet up with Geddy and not only share laughs and stories, but to grieve “with” him; thus finally bringing that chapter to a close once and for all, but to also never forget and and always remember it, too
I’m going to go out on a limb and assume that Geddy saw some therapists over the past few years. I mean, to suffer such losses as he in such a sort timespan… rush would mess anyone up. Professional help is necessary, even for someone as resilient as Geddy Lee
I know from my experiences going to therapy, the underlying premise is that the more you talk about the worst most traumatic events, the easier they are to talk about each time after. A sense of acceptance begins to take hold, and when it does, that’s when one can move forward
So having said that, this is also very therapeutic for Geddy concerning the deaths that he had to ensure personally, and so that he can feel better in knowing that he was able to give the fans the closure that he knew all along needed to be established
RUSH isn’t one of those bands that would just go into obscurity leaving the fans high and dry. They know the deal, and wouldn’t have it any other way than to provide an opportunity for all to gather with him
@@MyVideos-fm7ugHe did, indeed, go to a therapist at his wife Nancy’s suggestion, to help him cope with what Neil was going through battling his brain tumor; it didn’t help, and soon he was also faced with witnessing his mother Mary’s battle with dementia. What truly helped him the most was writing the memoir…Nancy stated that the whole process was cathartic for him, that she could see it.
Well said Kevin. Spot on that. Rush were three parts of absolute superior musicianship. Head and shoulders above all others. Their body of work and all the live shows are very memorable treasures of brilliance.

I wish all interviews with known artists/musicians were this thoughtful and prepared. They don't really feel like interviews - more like listening in to a chat between friends.
Obviously the key thing is trust. Geddy wouldn't open up like this unless it's to a person he knows is coming from a sincere place.
This is a fantastic interview. I’d really love to see Geddy sit down with Rick Beato for an interview that focuses more on the musical/songwriting aspects of Geddy and Rush’s career as well. As a musician myself and a massive Rush fan, I find myself mystified at so many of their compositions that it would be a dream come true to hear Geddy (and Alex) talk about their writing process and how they composed their music, particularly the late 70s prog epics. I obviously have no clue if that would be something that Geddy and/or Alex would be interested in, but it would fill me with joy to hear them discuss more of that side of things. Love hearing them telling their stories!

I wholeheartedly agree! I’m a lifelong musician and audio engineer myself, and Rush was one of my earliest and, for sure, my greatest musical influence. Rick Beato would get a great interview from Geddy and Alex, I’m sure with much more in depth musical and production insights than other interviews I’ve seen.

@@randyward3889 dude a Geddy + Alex + Terry Brown interview with Rick would seriously be a dream come true for me. TB is BY FAR my favorite Rush producer and one of my all time favorite producers in general, no question about it. I personally think his production was the secret sauce in making Rush work.
For instance, Geddy obviously had some incredibly unconventional vocals that could have EASILY sounded really silly and honestly bad without the right producer. Thankfully, TB knew exactly how to mix that unique vocal timbre to make it sound extremely full and powerful despite how high Geddy sang back then, and his instrumental mixes were equally sublime.
The drums are probably the best sounding drums I can think of from that era, and the way they panned the toms and things makes everything sound really cool and 3D. The guitar, bass, and synth parts always meshed together perfectly, creating one great, uniform sound while also conveying a sense of “breath” and space between the instruments as well. Every instrument sits perfectly in its frequency range. I could go on and on about how integral Terry Brown was to Rush’s early success (by far their best period, imo), man.
And then as far as hearing them discuss songwriting, I would be incredibly interested in hearing the process they went through to write the epics like 2112, Xanadu, Cygnus Books I and II (book II is my personal favorite Rush epic), and even the shorter epics like Natural Science. Considering there are songs where there will be two different sections back to back that are completely different from each other (different keys, time signatures, feels/grooves, etc.), I just really wanna know how they decided which direction they wanted to go in in situations like that and how they navigated that stuff.
Like, did they have a bunch of small ideas for stuff and then just had to try to figure out ways to paste them all together into a cohesive song? Or did they have ideas for what they wanted to do and make a road map (i.e. “ok, we’ll start this section in x key and x time sig, then we should do a different section in y key and y time sig…”) for the song before they even started writing it? It seems like there must be some sort of system for successfully writing and pulling off a 20-minute prog epic, and I would love nothing more than to hear those guys get into all the tiniest details of their writing process. It would be incredible.
We are all hoping for that.

Hands down the best book on a life lived I have ever read. The chapter on the Holocaust was simply amazing. As a student of history, I am grateful that Geddy included this in the book. Kudos Geddy, and thank you so much for the musical joy that you, Alex and Neil brought to countless millions!
I agree. I loved the book, and Geddy's inclusion of his parents' experiences in the Holocaust is, I think, integral to the person of integrity, kindness, compassion, and tolerance that he became.
It was great to hear Geddy mention Nancy's reaction to the ovation at the RRHOF induction. I think that was striking to a lot of us as fans to see her experience that. We often express our gratitude to these guys for the music they gave us, but we also owe thanks to their families who sacrificed so much to make it possible.

As much as I loved hearing Geddy play his bass or sing, I now love hearing him speak. He is such a good communicator. There is also Strombo who always does such natural interviews. A super interesting duo to listen to.
I've been a Rush fan for over 35 years. Geddy and the band were never ones to overexpose themselves or overstay their welcome. Through Geddy's book, we've gotten a chance to know all the individuals of the band a bit more and I feel vindicated as a Rush fan. I made a good decision to follow Rush as a teenager because they were always real people, never poseurs, and I can say now what such a beautiful human being Geddy is. So grateful to him being willing to open up. Really cherish it.
Rush has guided me through hard times, thanks for this interview. You’re an incredibly thoughtful host. These conversations are like they’re happening in the room with us at home.

You know, I often get a ton of shit on social media for defending these three fine gentlemen (as many of us do), but Goddamnit-how can you not! Every time you hear this man speak, the genuine honesty and open-ness that just pours out of him is just heartwarming and it can't help but make you feel good for humanity that this guy (and his mates) exists on earth. How lucky we are. If only these naysayers knew...

From the vast array of idiots that always dismiss them (i.e. "they suck", or "the singer is just terrible", etc.). Every true Rush fan has had to defend them/their music at some point. For so long these guys were my musical inspiration. Now listening to Geddy at how humble and emotionally regulated he is a new and more important inspiration comes to my mind. Just how to be a wonderful human in what can sometimes feel chaotic times. Thank you for this Geddy. I needed it. A simply awesome interview. Much love.
I'm 56 years old. But, I look back to my 13th birthday gift, a used set of beat up drums, no cymbals yet. At that same time, I discovered Rush before "Moving Pictures" came out. What a fun ride trying to learn, and play all of those songs on the drums, usually failing miserably. Just wanted to give a big "Thank You" to Geddy, Alex, and Neil (RIP).
It's always such a joy and honour to listen Geddy talk. And everyone keeping Neil's disease away from the public was one of the biggest class acts ever.
Geddy seems to be such a decent, thoughtful, intelligent guy, and Strombo always seems to give a fantastic interview. What a great video.

I remember my local radio station when I lived in Cleveland...WMMS...broke these guys into the mainstream. So Rush is a big deal in Cleveland. And of course Rush was a big part of my life as well. Geddy, as well as others like Lemmy, Cliff, Pete Steele and Les Claypool influenced me to play the bass, even though I was basically groomed to be a guitarist. I love the guitar, but to me, the bass more accurately expresses musically the way I feel. So thank you Geddy for your awesome music, your endearing personality, your honesty and above all your dedication to music. You age like the finest wine and as every year goes by you become more and more a captivating and influential human being. Thank you Gary! ❤

Oh so great, so genuine. I'm a Gen X Toronto girl. I was the girl who didn't have to wait in washroom lineups at shows. I've spent hours and hours and hours of my life with my three BFs, was gutted when we lost Neil. As a teenager, I used blare Bastille Day before final exams on my dad's JBL floor speakers. Almost everyone I know has had a Geddy Lee sighting or first hand experience. I have not. But secretly hopeful that one day I may bump into him somewhere to tell him how much Rush meant to me and still does, just differently. Thank you so much for this. I got THE book for Christmas from my wife (she knows how big a Rush fan I am).
I’ve just finished the chapter about Geddy’s parents’ ordeal during the war.
I live only 30 km from Auschwitz site, so for me it’s not a story of some faraway land and times long gone.
It will always be hard for me to come to terms with the fact that many Poles let their Jewish friends, neighbours and co-citizens down (to say the least).
But I will never forget Rush30 gig in Prague in 2004 and so many Polish fans in the venue.

His impression of neil is hilarious. He NEVER did this when neil was alive. Its like he had been waiting 40 years to kinda pick on him. Its all in good humor though. I get a kick out of it.

Geddy needs to start a school for people (entertainers, politicians, etc., etc.) who live in the public eye. This school would teach these "famous" folks how to be decent, authentic, thoughtful, honest, and generous. Thanks Geddy!! Thanks to you also Strombo for this great interview!
One of my most cherished memories in regards to the impact that Geddy had on his fans was a concert at Maple Leaf Gardens. It was their Roll The Bones tour, and i was seated in my usual section, Geddys side of the stage, the first box up from the floor. (I always sat there finding it the best way to slip behind the stage to position myself to where I could watch Neil drum seeing both pairs of hands and feet). Before moving back there after the first few songs I had noticed a couple of girls on the floor, about 15 rows back, each of them holding a sign. While back there I used my binoculars and read their signs. They read: "Hey Geddy, where's your thing?" And, "Hey Geddy, I want your thing!" Of course in relation to the instrumental song, Where's My Thing on that album. Thats what he meant to those fans. Classic!

High School parking lot. 8 Track of 2112. Sophomore year, Right before summer vacation in 1976. Never smoked weed in my life, They hot boxed the shit out of that car, And from that moment on, a lifelong Rush fan was born. Zeppelin was my band up to that point, And I was not prepared for that onslaught. I'm sure my story mirrors a lot of others when being exposed to Rush for the first time! This interview made me cry, I am a 56 year old male and I just have so much love for Geddy Lee and RUSH. I also can't say enough about the way George handled this interview. His peaceful and soothing demeanor stands out and the bond him and Geddy have is incredible.

I think Strombo is the best interviewer. He asks the best questions, he is genuinely curious about what his guest has to say, and he does his homework. Huge props to him.
I will never forget the day I heard that Neil passed away. Every day I enter my shop at 7 am, turn on the lights, fire up my PA, and put on Rock101 Vancouver. The first thing I heard that day was Neil’s solo that he performed on the David Letterman show, and I just thought “that’s weird. Radio stations don’t play drum solos.” And then the announcement: Neil Peart has passed away from glioblastoma cancer, and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. And then I thought “what’s Alex and Geddy supposed to do now? Replace Neil? Out of the question. Remain musically celibate for the rest of their lives? Also out of the question. I’m just grateful for the amazing catalog of music that they gave to the world, to be enjoyed by old fans, and discovered by new fans. Geddy, Big Al, thanks fellas. 🙏🏻✌🏻
Terrific conversation. Geddy tells a story as good as he sings his songs. The one about the meeting with Neil responding to Alex's desire to tour soon with a simple "fuck" was pure gold.

Those 3 guys made this beautiful music... Then they just kept on making it decade upon decade. The music continued to be magical and inspiring. It held our attention and we were moved by it and it's authors. It is no wonder we feel love toward these gentlemen. They have given us much.

I paused as much as I could through the photos of the crowds because I couldn't believe how old some of those people looked and then I remember I am going to be 62 in a week, I'm not the 15 year old that first heard the title tract to A Farewell to Kings and was blown away and continues to be for all these years later. Geddy sang a song on 2112 about Bangkok. I never would have dreamed in a million years that I would be married to a Thai lady and living here. OK for the Canadian winters only but I am. Thanks for the music and memories. Sadly, the day I arrived in Bangkok for the 4th time on January 7th 2020, once I got a SIM Card in my phone I was still in the airport when my first message I read on FB was that Neil had Died. BTW, I couldn't agree more that the R&R Hall of Fame when that guy said FROM TORONTO! That was truly a Powerful moment for all RUSH Fans! GOD BLESS and Be well.
At the tender age of 63, I remember at the age of 17 playing my new Univox Les Paul at my Cousin's confirmation party. Two guys approached me at the front of the stage when I had finished and handed me all the Worlds a stage Album and asked if I ever heard of Rush. Feeling cool
Because it was my first time drinking too, I replied their ok, then they called my bluff and asked me to name 1song from Rush which I couldn't so he handed me the Album and said it was mine to keep. With that said from 1977 till their last show I have Loved Rush. I still listen to them and will till I die. Not only have they created some of the greatest Music ever but the integrity and Brotherhood they share is Heartwarming and they are the Mt Everest of what great Role models should be. How good are they as Musicians 🤔
I took the Live dvd video and cue'd up the Studio Album of the song Freewill. Every beat and every note was surgically dead on till the ending which they changed up being live. The 3 most talented and surgically connected Musicians I have ever witnessed.
Yes is the only other live band I have seen that shares their talent and cohesive playing. Neil Alex and Geddy even though I don't know them personally I Love them like Brothers. Their Music and comedy has brought so much happiness to my Life and continues to do so.

This is at sometimes, a deeply intuitive heartfelt little chat. Regardless of who's being interviewed, there is some wonderful, searching, candid questions being asked. Thank you Strombo, thank you Geddy. Two real people.

RUSH are consummate (not consomee) musicians, that have given SO MUCH joy to so many, and helped them through both good and bad times!

I'm not much of a reader, I am growing to enjoy it more and more as I find the right type of literature for me. I am three chapters into this book and I am hooked. I can hear Geddy's voice narrate as I dance across the pages. I am so very interested to hear more of this story. Thank you for this interview. I have never loved the individual members of any band more than I do Rush. Their music and lyrics are permanently intertwined in my life. I’m a better person for it.

Geddy makes the perfect point. This tour was so much about closure. The end of Rush was like the sudden death of a close relative. You think they will always be there and one day they aren't.
I was lucky to see Geddy in Glasgow and it was very much a perfect and necessary closure. Our time of grieving is over, now it's time to celebrate the life and memories and all that they gave us

I’d like to add @TheStromboShow, there is a feeling of excitement for me just before I tune in to your show. You are always very well prepped and ready. I like how you listen to your guest, follow up or go to another subject. Always a smooth transition. In my eyes and ears, you are the best. I love hearing a guest say that is a great question to you, because it is. You are an artist George.
Regarding this interview with Geddy, for me, Rush is done. But the closure is not. This is because for over 40 years, I’ve had a real connection with the band. I feel as I’m not a fan. I’m a friend. I listen to my friends everyday. And when I hear a live show, I feel as I’m there. Without a phone in my hand. I have a lighter. Taking it all in. My closure is when I’m gone. Then my kids can keep the music alive.
Today was an excellent day. I got to see my friend again, and watch the artist speak to him.

Great interview, George. Geddy's such a down-to-earth mensch.
Geddy lived in my neighbourhood, the Beach(es), in Toronto, when I was young. He had a purple Porsche Carrera, with a big whale tail. And he was quite nice about waving to the 14-15 yr olds metalheads in the "hood who recognized him. He lived on Glen Manor Drive, across the street from a ravine we ALL drank in......
In my 57 years I dont think I have ever seen such a complete interview, it was informative, humorous and emotional. I love Rush, I also have a lot of time for the individual members who have given me so much over the years but more importantly I now love Strombo for giving this to me. Thank you from the UK x
