Learning he decided to do this instead of using the prepared speech that he really had in his coat pocket...as a last minute decision that he told his wife he was about to do seconds before heading up to the stage...adds a lot of context to his fidgeting as he stood there waiting on Neil and Geddy. 'Well I told her I was going to do it. Can't puss out now. I guess I maybe shouldn't. No. Screw that. I'm totes going to do it! Shit..now I got happy feet. Ok, relax. I can totally pull this off. Can't be any more difficult than nailing a hard solo in front of 50 thousand fans.' And he pulled it off.

Neil's speech was poetic and eloquent. Geddy's speech was moving and beautiful. Alex's speech was completely unexpected and completely punk rock-- a satirical middle finger to all of these awards shows, where too many stars take themselves so seriously that they can't, or won't, laugh at themselves! Dave was right: Rush has always been cool! These three guys rock! We love you and miss you, Neil!

He said, in so many words, that he didn't need the "Rock'N'Roll Hall of Fame's stamp of approval on what Rush had done for nearly 40 years! You're right-Alex saw right through the fake and the plastic that The Rock'N'Roll Hall of Fame claims to support. He gave the Rock'N'Roll Hall of Fame the black eyes that they've needed for so long! Since when has Rush EVER NEEDED to be accepted into a group of fake people that the Rock'N'Roll Hall of Fame snobs are? There are plenty of Rock Groups that got out there, fought long and hard, and achieved success...and yet found themselves snubbed by these "Hall of Fame" snobs for many years. Look at what happened in KISS'S case. They were eligible for the Rock'N'Roll Hall of Fame since the late 1990s, but they were snubbed by these snobs until 2014. Let that one sink in. If I'd of been Alex Lifespan, I'd of told these clowns off, thrown their little statue back at 'em, and walked out-forever!!!

And to the editorial board of Rolling Stone as well. Their original denial was because the board judged Rush to be too derivative to merit induction, which I never got because almost every album was a new journey into their evolving world. How is it derivative to put out 6 or 7 albums in 10 years, each unique in its own right but with a whisper of past albums providing an aural record of their progression in achieving virtuosity. And when Alex told them to get bent, all mention of the band was curtailed and they were never main story material in Rolling Stone. Thats retarded Ben Fong Torres' philosophy, but look who succeeded in spite of anyone's obstructions or trash talking. Here's the transcript of Alex’s speech:
    Good evening everyone,
Let me begin by saying thanks to all you fans.
We’ve been touring and writing and flying all over the universe running ourselves restless, just to perform for ALL of you guys. (Mimicking guitar, drums and vocals.)
Then one day someone said: “THE Rocn'n roll Hall of Fame”.....”The ROCK AND ROLL HAAALL of FAAAME” ...Us!? Why? Are you being serious!? So, do you want it or not? Well, let’s just see “1, 2, 3, 4..., 8…, 9 albums. Duh!” The number of albums doesn’t count. Yet, of course it does. Or it doesn’t! Well? Well, FU!
But… years went by, more writing, flying around etc. And then, one day (whistling) a phone rings: Hello? Yes, it's Alex. What!? Really!? Awesome, I’ll tell the guys. Guys, they want us in the Rock&Roll Hall of Fame! Well, then (getting dressed up, cleaned up, ready to go, pulling the speech paper out):
"Good evening. To whom this may concern… (breaking down). Nah! Foock it! I won’t put you all through that torment. So: to my family, crew members, Neil, Geddy, and most of all YOU, GUYS: Thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU."
    Signed & sealed:
    Alex Lifeson

I saw Alex a few times back in the 70's at a local convenience store in Thornhill, ON. One time I said hello and asked him what Rush was up to and he said they were recording Hemispheres. Yes, Neil had the titled pick long before they finished it apparently. I think they were well into it and Alex told me it was the most difficult album to produce in terms of complexity. I found that interesting to think about when I listened to this great album when it was released first on red vinyl no less for the Canadian pressings anyway. Alex was friendly and definately appreciates his fans. I mean you can catch someline like that you don't know at the wrong time for them but he could tell I was a fan who knew the bands music well.
