The Mossberg Shockwave is Mostly Useless

- In this review of the 20 gauge version of Mossberg's shotgun that's not really a shotgun, we take a look at why the very concept of the Shockwave makes it a lousy choice for personal protection.

Some of your examples given in the video are relevant to using this weapon, however the gun is far from useless. As a retired police officer with the last decade of service as a firearms' instructor, I fell in love with it on first sight. I was in the local gun shop purchasing some ammo when I spotted this on the wall. I could see that for the gun to be accurate it had to be held up and away from the face, as you demonstrated. In practice, firing a gun from the hip is extremely inaccurate unless continuous practice is used. I passed on purchasing it and sometime later was reading about the Crimson side mounted laser sight. I order the Crimson and the next day purchased a shockwave in 20ga (I am 74 and have no business messing with a 12ga "handgun"). I mounted the Crimson and took the shockwave to the range. It worked fantastic. Point and shoot, on target every time. The farthest distance I have to shoot in my house is 25 feet, at that distance the spread is about chest wide with No.3 Buck. It is my go-to gun for defending my house now. One caveat; if someone feels like repeating this, get the green laser if you want to fire the weapon in outside in full sunlight, as the red while perfect inside or on cloudy days will wash out in sunlight. Thanks for your videos, I find them informative and interesting.
Would you mind sharing a link to the specific green crimson laser sight, that you are referring to?
Much respect sir!!!
Mossberg offers the shockwave with a saddle mounted laser.

Anyway on a serious note.. the only reason I don't have one of these yet is because of the legality with putting a telescoping stock AR pistol grip on it. I have tactical shotguns that have just a pistol grip I don't need another one. But the 500 the 870 or the 590 shockwave with an adjustable AR pistol grip that's something I would like. Small backpack size also an NFA item I believe if you do that to it. But they did approve I say they okay the shit staying ATF they approved one only one shoulder mounted pistol brace for those for now. But you know how they work. You give him a few days a week or months and they'll change their mind. That's the only reason I don't have one yet. I don't like the grip that it comes with and if I can't put a shoulder stock on it I don't want it. It is a badass little piece of hardware though. Pardon my language but nothing says fuck you like a 12 gauge
Like the saddlelaser
Right. Get a Nightstick green laser/light forend. It is so good I removed the optic I had mounted on top. No longer needed.
As i respect your opinion, i have alot of experience with shot guns, and found the shockwave is a very fun, dependable weapon, and will HIGHLY recommend!!

Gotta disagree on this one. It could be very handy in very tight spaces for example. And also a nice packaging to put in the back of a backpack when fly fishing in bear country for another example.
Exactly. Most people will see it as a "perfect hone defense weapon" but it simply isn't. And the majority of people who will use it for that have little to no training clearing a house or aiming it lnao

The shockwave provides more mobility and ergonomics in CQC, also it is worth considering that longer shotguns make it earlier for the opposition to reach the gun faster and misdirect the barrel or disarm you completely. The shotgun clearly is not intended for long-range shooting, so I think you misjudged the weapon. It is a good truck gun, compact for survival/bear protection for hikers or those living in certain areas, and even an affective option in the case of home defense.
He is shooting at close ranges though. Not like he is shooting rifled slugs at 30m.
@@goxcprethen maybe he shouldn’t be someone people take advice from about shooting
The push-pull method is my preferred technique for all shotguns. Even with a stock, I barely make contact with my shoulder and cheek. True that it does require a little strength, but I imagine someone who lacks the strength to do it would lack the strength to wield a 12 gauge anyway.
Yes but if you hold it sideways like "gangster style" it adds +15 accuracy and +10 damage

Not every gun has to be a tool. Nothing wrong with having a gun just to have a good time at the range.
Tyler Hulan absolutely! Thank you!
I do agree somewhat many citizens don't practice enough correctly and thus should not waste time at the range with a gun that really they can't efficiently use 🚫
Michael Williams yeah I agree and some of us have places to shoot and don’t have to rely on going to the range. I own many firearms and shoot all the time, since I live on a good size farm I never go to a range simply because I don’t have too. I can safely shoot up to 300yds on my own property.
I put the Raptor grip to ny 590A1 Mariner and it's alot of fun to shoot the heavy 18.5" barrel really helps with recoil also it looks really cool.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to fire it in a while due to an injury to my elbow from work
Agreed. If you see it as an expensive range toy, that's fine. But some people are pushing it as a defense or hunting gun, which is insane. This has bad effects, like the people who bought a pistol grip only shotgun as their first gun because they saw one on TV, shot it a few times, realized that it sucked, and never bought another gun because they assumed all guns suck.

Shot over 500 rounds through it. I never had a problem this sounds like operator error. Its a great car gun.

#4 nitro mags make this sucker very unpleasant to shoot. I don't like it. To each his own.
follow-up comment: i have had it for about 2 months now and it's fucking amazing. well built little bitch. I've only found 2 issues with it. 1. the bars on the pump that retract into it are a bit loose, but apparently that's common with mossbergs. 2. the sides of the undercarriage(idfk) where you insert the shells is SUPER sharp at first. I sliced the everliving shit out of my thumb trying to speed load manually. otherwise it's an amazing buy.
@@craigmack3361 might pay the $200 tax stamp and get a stock for it
@@bloodmutt absolutely not. It's not mine, stepdads gun. I like traditional shotguns with 18.5 or 20 inch barrels. I do like the pistol grip look but control ability is a must have feature in my opinion. As far as tax stamps go, I have no use for that. It'd be cool to put a stock on an MP40 or an ak pistol though. As you can probably tell I'm a surplus nut. I was studying this for stepdude
The big problem with long barrel shotguns is they're tough to use in hallways & small rooms & porches.
I mounted the Nightstick laser/light combo forend and can now shot it accurately, 8+1 rds of minishell buckshot in a compact little package much more maneuverable in my home than any other long arm. Crimson Trace makes a laser 'saddle' mount that's nice too (I have no affiliation with either).
I appreciate his review and I didn’t read all 4500 comments so I might be repeating, but I would love to see an update after he uses/tries both a green and a red laser to see if his personal grading improves above “mostly useless”.
I've been effectively shooting from the hip for decades. If he can't shoot from the hip, it's on him, not the weapon's fault.
It will always be worse than a stock shotgun
@@Halal_Dan how can you possibly know this? Different people fit into different weapons differently. What may be perfect for you sucks for someone else. It’s always been like this, long before firearms were ever invented. Shooting from the hip is an entirely different process from traditional shooting with a (modern) pistol. This Mossberg can be used to equal efficiency as any other semi auto shotgun can, *depending on the person doing the shooting*
Keep kicking ass and shooting from the hip, Kimberlain; it’s a skill I’m currently leveling up myself for future quick drawing with my python

Remember switching to your sidearm is faster than reloading
get the mini-shell adapter and mount a side-saddle...and your carrying around about 20 rds....that's a lot of firepower...
The price was right, and it makes a good hiking partner with a proper sling or back mounted carry case. Fits in a ruck easily enough to draw with the raptor grip out of the ruck pouch on either side. I haven't had ANY issues with mine, acquiring, or hitting targets. Maybe a green laser, or Hickock45 can help you out?
I have a regular Mossberg 500 changed the stock into a tactical one to fit my small frame and it works awesome. I have it in the bedroom next to my bed. Then I saw the Mossberg Shockwave 12ga. that's small fits my body shape perfectly and shoots awesomely. Bought it. Now I got 2 of ems. Wish I had a third one.
I put a laser on it solved the aiming issue real easy
Haha, you would think in 2018 that it would seem like a common solution to that problem but even I haven't thought of that or seen anyone else do it. Way to go dude
That was actually my first thought as well. Laser, and problem solved.
I just came to say the same thing
Even a flashlight with a tight beam mounted would work, especially in close quarters. I use one on a full length 88 and checked it with a laser bore site. pretty much dead center at 25 feet.
So basically you need to spend another $150 on a laser to make the gun halfway usable. Awesome product.

Hickok45 was able to make hits on target at 80yds. Experience counts.
This will work with full size shells, but, as some others may have stated, the opsol adapter and Aguila mini shells make this a lot easier to control and use.
Mossberg recently released the 590S version that natively works with the mini shells.

Use a pressure switch, but honestly if you're using for strictly home defense and technically can't shoot someone outside of your house, you really don't need a light (would be helpful in the dark). I'd say average shot inside a house isn't more than 20 feet, with a shotgun I'd say using buckshot you'd just have to point in direction and even if off slightly you'd still do significant damage. I've not tested this on a range just a theory based off just shooting guns throughout the years.
To much for some to comprehend I guess.

I think it's safe to say that it's primarily aimed at people looking for a home defence or truck gun. ie. something good for close quarters that can be easily stashed away. You wouldn't want it as an everyday shooter and it's certainly no replacement for a full sized shotgun, but honestly I've heard a lot of good things about the Shockwave.
....."Like to keep this for close encounters....heard that".....
The reason I was considering one of these is my house is small, with some tight doorways and corners. My 870 is not at all maneuverable coming from the bedroom without pointing it straight up or down coming around corners. Still have the pistols, but was hoping this would be an option as well.
Throw a grenade first to clear doorways and corners.

I chose the Remington 870 mainly because of the safety and partly because of the magpul forend. But for my regular more functional shotgun, I use the Mossberg 500 with a magpul stock where the safety isn't an issue.

I think I'd rather have this in my truck instead of a full shotgun... which I think is one of the primary niches of these things, yes we all know not having a stock makes it much less effective. But what you lose in usability, you gain in ease of storage and concealability, and sometimes that's the priority
anotherrandomtexan25 well said.
Loss of effectiveness and poor aiming ability can never be trumped by cocealabily especially when they have had product like folding stocks for decades now

Buy the 590S Shockwave. It feeds mini-shells without an adapter. And put a Nightstick laser/light forend on it. Since mine will hold 8 mini-shells, no need for a side-saddle. More Streamlined without it. I have a rail on top for an optic but don’t need the optic now with the laser/light forend.

With Crimson Trace its a great home defense/truck gun option and a lot of fun to practice with.
The video and assessment are appreciated.
I've owned the Mossberg for a few months now--I've had it at the range a number of times now, and I'm pretty comfortable with it at this point, both shooting "from the hip" and aiming it from chest/neck height. I think everything you say is valid, but as I've stated elsewhere, having grown up in the venerable city of Detroit, where I've lived in mostly old buildings with small rooms, tight corners, and short hallways (such as the beautiful old building I've been living in for the past 5 years), it's hard not to view the Shockwave as the most practical home defense option for my particular situation (compared to something like the full-size 590)...

that short barrel doesn't fit on my maverick....I know, I know...but I had to try.....
This firearm is not useless or mostly useless by any stretch of the imagination; it's just not a beginner's pump shotgun. Just because you can't shoot the gun accurately doesn't mean that other people can't either. With a bit of practice and proper technique, this firearm can be perfectly accurate at the distances you'd be defending yourself at (15 or so yards).
If you really have SO MUCH training with stockless shotguns that you really are crazy effective with them (hint, you aren't that good), then you will STILL be better with a shotgun that has a stock.
I have used stockless shotguns a decent amount, but before the shockwave came out. I honestly tried to give them the benefit of the doubt. The shot timer always indicated that having the stock was better, and by a significant amount.
The shockwave doesn't change it at all, just shortens the barrel by 4 inches and instead adds a grip that is a few inches longer.
InRangeTV has done a pretty solid video testing stockless shotguns:
ua-cam.com/video/tYjThckYqBQ/v-deo.html
I agree there is a proper way to use this I believe thunder ranch has a video on it. The guy in this video has no clue what he is doing
Best damn response to this video so far.
Hickok45 didn't seem to have any trouble
So because it doesn't fit your philosophy of use that means it's useless? Useless for you sure , but for people who know how and what to use it for it's great.
Name something that people use it for, in which it performs better than a less expensive gun that doesn't require special techniques and training to use.
Aram Fingal 1. To own a short barrel shotgun legally, 2. Home defense, I wouldn’t want to be clearing rooms with my 28 inch Remington 870 and as a 19 year old I’m not old enough to buy a handgun, 3. Truck gun
Cody Whittenton I agree but fyi you have to be 21 to buy it. Because it is sold as a "firearm" not a shotgun.
Cody Whittenton, Buy a handgun from an individual. You only have to be 21 to buy a handgun from a dealer.
@@aramfingal5180 backpack bear gun.
Yeah, I agree mostly. Ammo capacity is low. Recoil for the 12ga is high. 20ga and 410ga would be much better. Can't hunt with it. Can't legally modify too much or you'll get in big trouble. Limited home security. Probably just fun to blast at the range.
I'm new gun owner and this was my first purchase. I went to the range for a lesson and at 15 yards (longest distance in my house) I had no trouble aiming this firearm at all. And when I turned on the laser saddle I added it was almost pinpoint accurate shooting slugs...not sure how anyone could think this is useless....
He has a couple of other videos where he will "professionally" crap on a firearm for personal reasons. "Expert opinions" is all lol. It's a great shotgun. He hated the NAA mini-revolvers too, but most of the owners in the comments section loved it.
@@bigwavesun my opinion of the NAA minis has dropped radically of late...have two that have ceased working entirely and a .22 mag version that often misfires...carrying one of these in your pocket endlessly and counting on it to work in a pinch may very a bad idea....
@@frankpienkosky5688 not exactly my pick for a .22 revolver for carry. I'd go for a ruger or smitty for .22/mag. The NAAs are more fun guns honestly.
I love my Shockwave!! I’m not a big dude and when I first got this gun I was a little intimidated cause I was thinking of recoil, but after I got to know my shockwave and applied technique I have no problem and can get my own personal training in with and the fun of just blowing shit up with it all day and all night. After showing my girlfriend how to shoot it she can shoot it just fine too. Straight out of the box no problems 🤘🏽👍🏽 it’s a big kick in the pants!!!!
First time I fired my 12ga shockwave I was stacking slugs through the same hole at 5 yards firing from the hip. Maybe I got a bit more gangster in me but I didn’t miss a single round out of the 25 i shot
After I machined and installed an adapter for an AR15 pistol grip it's POINT SHOOTING became very accurate!
I did keep the little stub to "KEEP IT THE LEGAL MIN. 26 INCHES!"
NOW?
IT'S DEFINITELY MY FAVORITE DEFENSE FIREARM!
Chris as always you did a great job on the review. As one who owns several shotguns this is a awful choice for your main tactic of self defense. However in those times we’re size and conceal ability are paramount this is a good option. With practice you can use this well not great but we’ll.
I hardly ever shoot any firearms, and I found it easy to put rounds on target with this at 35 feet immediately. This guy has an agenda.
36reinhart to be fair that’s well within the expected maximum range of a stocked shotgun. Assuming that’s what it’s being compared to you should be able to hit reliably at 3x that distance
I agree
Stop trying to justify your own purchase
sounds like a TRAINING ISSUE
So is learning how to use a real shotgun properly.
@@LuckyGunner I think they mean you need more practice before you make a call on the effectiveness of the weapon.
@@Levashanks someone who gets it
If you can't handle this gun in 20 gauge... hit the gym.
@Funky White So's yer face.
I can shoot my 590 shockwave from the hip and hit targets easily. I have purchased mini-shells and can now carry nine rounds of buckshot. I have ordered a laser and a shell carrier that attaches to the gun. This thing is a beast and can be carried in a vehicle with ease.
I definitely think the shoulder stock is super helpful in shotguns. I'm relatively inexperienced as a shooter, but feel a lot more comfortable with shotguns than with handguns.
I have to strongly disagree. The Shockwave is an excellent choice for home defense. Mine is crazy accurate and has very fast target acquisition; once you figure out how to shoot it properly, it becomes a pleasure to put rounds through. Its size is also better suited for maneuvering inside a house; I would definitely grab it before I grabbed my full-size 870.
Or you could go bullpup: Short length (26.1" for KSG), superior capacity, and you retain the ability to shoulder your shotgun.
Your shockwave might be "accurate" at the range because you take your time. Try taking a class or putting yourself on a shot timer. When you try to be fast, your accuracy will degrade significantly.
I don't find that to be true at all. I've done speed drills with the Shockwave, with targets at different angles and heights, and it performs great. I've also handled a KSG, and I would consider it more of a range toy than the Shockwave. The KSG doesn't have enough mass to adequately absorb recoil, so that energy is going to be absorbed by your shoulder, where as the Shockwave's recoil is mitigated greatly by allowing the gun to travel back and down after each shot. Also, the Shockwave is less likely to malfunction than the KSG. You should try picking up a Shockwave and putting it through its paces, I think you'll find it a superior home defense gun.
The Shockwave loses the greatest single feature of long guns: the stock.
Bullpup shotguns keep that while reducing the length.
Fine, you don't like the KSG because you don't trust Kel Tec quality, the KSG was just an example.
You could also go with Standard Manufacturing's DP-12, which has more than enough mass to absorb recoil very well, while keeping a short length, high capacity, and the ability to be shouldered. It also has an amazing reputation for quality and reliability.
Or you could go IWI's TS12, which is semi-auto. Given IWI's reputation, we can assume that it will be uncompromisingly reliable.
If you really think the shockwave is great, then it seems you don't want to listen to any of the experts in the field. A LOT of them have spoken against stockless shotguns.
I will take my own experience over "experts", yes. The weakness of bullpup shotguns is that they have a shoulder stock, but not enough mass to mitigate recoil. This is a poor design, and not well suited for any real purpose other than range toy. The Shockwave on the other hand doesn't share this weakness, so it performs much better as a home defense gun than any bullpup ever could.
Egads, you really have never used a bullpup, have you?
Also, the KSG is kinda the only lightweight one.
This isn’t for the weak. so maybe change your title to: “The mossberg shockwave is mostly useless for Me”
Anyone who could be highly effective with one of these things would be an absolute god with a proper shotgun. And that's the thing, there is *nobody* who can shoot one of these more effectively than a proper shotgun. *You* might be better with one of these than I am with a proper shotgun (I doubt it) but you can shoot a proper shotgun better than one of these. Stocks exist for a reason.
lol internet tough guy gotta flex his ween
@@protodevilin non internet tough guy too
In Canada it is over 26 inches long and cleared as a firearm. As it is it will fit onto my backpack easily and we have very tight pistol laws so this is the best of all worlds
I put a Streamlight RM2 green laser/light combo on the top rail… its extremely easy to aim and tons of fun.
Its also a ready-made SBS if/when the NFA gets torn down, until then it’ll be doing nightstand duty loaded with 00 shorty’s.
A man has to know his limitations.
Well said, Inspector Callahan.
Imo its a replacement for a front door baseball bat, put a laser on it and call it good.
Gotta have that laser sight. Increases melee accuracy by 10 fold!
Just cuz ur a big softie doesnt mean this amazing weapon is useless
You need to learn how to use it. Point and Shoot is the way to go. The bead was originally designed to proof the barrel. The 410 is a serious home defense weapon if one can use it correctly.
This was absolutely ridiculous… so ridiculous that I now have one sitting in my closet ready for home defense.
Why does there always have to be a practical use for a gun. I got into an argument with my friend about this just because you can’t use the gun to go hunting or whatever use you want it for doesn’t mean it’s a bad gun. There’s nothing wrong with having a firearm that puts a smile on your face at the range. Personally in my opinion I think the shockwave would make a great home defense firearm
If it's just about owning a gun that is fun then have at it. This video did not even attempt to argue against the gun being fun. This video focused on evaluating it for the intended use the manufacturers are marketing it for.
Hickok45 had no problems using this weapon. watch?v=CxECBq-f68s&t=1196s

Dude that man is legendary. Speed shooter even with a Barret 50. 6 rounds in less then a second...on target
Some people call it a "room broom." if you don't understand the advantages of a room broom in a home defense situation, then I don't what to tell ya
Thanks for the review, pretty good points about how handling this beauty!!!
Never been happier with my 12 gauge Shockwave. Mastery is the key, as with any other kind of firearm.
I read that as "master key" first, lol.
"Mastery" doesn't replace common sense.
@lonkchase A stock is still better in almost every circumstance.
Why handicap yourself?
@@TheOwenMajor every circumstance except in tight spaces... which is the whole point of this shotgun..?
@@tacosHELLYEAH Use a handgun. The only tight space I can think of where something of this length would be more manageable than a stocked gun is in a vehicle.
And in a vehicle, you would be much better off using a pistol.
Just don't agree that this is useless. It's a bit new to many people. So, you need to get used to it. Once you find out where it shoots and figure out the way(s) you want to hold it, you will be hitting just fine with it. That's the same with any gun. In the meantime, you have a shorter long gun that's easier to maneuver in tight spaces and easier to store. I have the 20 Ga version, and I'm totally satisfied with it. I put on the Talon rubber grip and it looks like it came with the gun.
Yup,, if he was in a situation were his life depended on a gun and this was de only gun he had i bet he would pick it up n use it and sing praises about it afterwards, maybe
Thanks for pointing out the safety kicking on from recoil. They really should have discovered that in pre sales testing. Pruno
Yup, just got mine today in a stainless Cerakote.
You can respond to literally every point by saying "who cares? It's cool"
I got a 590 Shockwave 12g. I absolutely love this gun.
Shoulder brace with the pistol grip works good with it
I don't know, I'm starting to come around to these things more and more, especially the Remington Tac13 which is a semi auto. I think It'd be good on the side of your pack for a backwoods defense gun or bear gun. It'd also be a great compact survival gun for procuring small game or even big game with the added benefit of being an adequate self defense gun. Five rounds of 12 gauge buckshot is never useless for self defense.
As it stands right now the middle of December 2022 the ATF currently says it's okay to put only one brand one very particular AR style pistol grip that will allow you to shoulder Mount that weapon onto it and it does not become an NFA item. I don't recall the name and model of the shotgun pistol brace but there is one. I'm kind of hanging on to see if they're going to stick with that because if they are then I will go out and I will get one definitely in 12 gauge. But if they're going to change their fucking mind and be like oh well you know you got to register the register it amnesty blah blah blah blah I'm just not going to bother. Hell it wasn't that long ago you couldn't get these things anywhere unless you know it involved an sot. And I would have one by now but I just I don't like the factory grip on that I just don't like it. I love the 14-in barrel that's great. But I want to shoulder that thing. 🔥🔥
