Buying Supercars as Investments? | FUEL FOR THOUGHT

- Supercars have become an asset class, with many making their buying decisions based on investment potential. Join me for a Fuel For Thought on the topic and some opinions from my perspective about the future, my own cars and new models being released.
My Fuel For Thought, or FFT video series has always been an opportunity to share more from my experience of the automotive world and a common topic throughout my entire period working in the industry has surrounded the financial aspect of the supercar market. The last two decades have seen an unusual change in the norm when it comes to depreciation, or in some cases appreciation, of special and limited edition cars which may perhaps now be coming to an end.
From car flipping, to the rapid introduction of new models, let me share some of my own feelings about the investment market of cars in general and what it might mean going forwards with the simultaneous situations of a growing number of such cars being produced, along with potential restrictions for how they are even used.
Thanks for watching, Tim

It's been a while since my last FFT, but the series is back! A regular theme of questions throughout my time on UA-cam has surrounded car flipping and investing in supercars, while we've been through a bizarre decade with values. Here are some of my thoughts!
I’m 53 seconds early
The Mclaren F1 is an exception not the rule. There are many factors that influence demand for limited edition cars, but the hardest to predict is generational demographics. What will the 10yrs olds of the 90s and 00s be seeking out over this decade?
+Steven Exactly!
What about your Aston Martin ?
When u take covid vaccine?
Shmee is once again proving his best trait, being connected to his community. Keep it up, Tim
This is a virtue he has held since the beginning! very refreshing
Non-unicorn supercars are like boats: sporadically great to own and experience, but ultimately a terrible financial decision.
The standard joke is How do you to turn a whole lot of money into a little bit of money. Answer: Buy a yacht.
A hole in the water which to dump money into
Boats depreciating always. Supercars always increasing
I feel like shmee spends more time with his cars than staying in his house .
I do my best! xD
Very hardworking!
Cars are homes!
It's called desperation and poor business anticipation. Who would buy a shite load of fuel guzzling motors in these current times.
@@nivadvaneb6383 must normal people would say no in these times.
Shmee just making life better for everyone in these tough times..

Hey there from the United States
So interesting, I didn't even realize it was 20min long
Thank you for taking the time to watch
Do you know what is anoying me most about this chanel .his name Shmeeeee
@@Shmee150 Great insight. I always love the transparency on your channel. Much appreciated!
I really appreciate the in depth FFT on this topic. With all the restrictions being put into place, this video is important.
Well these are just some of my thoughts on the topic at the moment but as always there are things I won't have mentioned, it's just my musings as the camera was rolling
The restrictions on cars have for sure killed it for me. The new yaris gr is the most excited ive been for a brand new car since probably the 2010 focus rs
@@Shmee150 Your thoughts and musings on this subject are from a place of experience. Much appreciated 👍
Love how Shmee can just talk for 20 minutes with nearly one take!! Best in the industry right here
Have to love the classic ''Hi guys, I'm Shmee''

Title: Fuel for thought, "Buying Supercars as investments."
Me: Sounds like bad fuel for those thoughts.
Classic cars are not greatly dissimilar
true car enthusiasts never sees a car as an investment....end of discussion!
So many people have a go at me for my Vauxhall Corsa because i dont drive it as its the pllowest miles clubsport ive seen outside of opels personally owned car in germany.
They always say “if youre keeping it in a garage just buy a ford it ll be worth more” i couldnt give 2 shits im doing it to preserve a car which never gets the love it really deserves! Love my vauxhalls and make no denial of th issues and cheapness of then but its a car i believe is worth keeping as original as it can be even down to the tyres! Still has 2 of its factory original fits
Chapter markers and manually placed adverts for the last week's Shmee videos. What a good idea.
It's a gamble when it comes to increasing in value of cars. A great deal is dependent on taste and social opinion
But there’s one big catch; shmee is an influncer, I think that he actually influences the market and therefore it’ll be easier for him
@@wardtweepuntnul3141 Eehm no.
Hey Tim. Such a joy to live vicariously through your channel.
Glad you enjoy it! Thanks for watching
@@Shmee150 Love the cars but the FORD GT is in hiding up there. Hard to see it's beauty hidden away :( Temporary home?
Excellent comment Gregg! Owning exclusive things is great but to bring so much pleasure to others as a consequence is equally as great :) We are all obviously happy to subscribe to someone so knowledgable, personable and deserving as Tim. The bigger the fleet gets, the more rewarded we all are :)
@@tomcampbell5186 Yes, it’s temporary while he looks for a new place. Instead of just finding a new lame parking garage with enough space, he is looking for a permanent Shmancave. He’s found a couple of contenders, but they fell through. In the meantime, he is keeping some cars here at his friend’s garage, some in Germany at Apex, some at his dad’s house, and some in temporary parking garage spots.
@@981porsche3 Thanks for the info!
Really found this video interesting. Love hearing this side of you, real world information. Thanks Shmee
Love what you are doing Tim keep up the great work. ❤️
Great thoughts on purchasing and those that flip. One thing I’ve always liked about your uploads Tim is your passion for vehicles and not the chasing of future profits. Hearing the passion you have is so refreshing. Thank you for your efforts.
Tim, you are hands down my favorite car UA-camr with Doug being second, simply because of how honest and down to earth you are on topics like these. I had the pleasure to meet you when you had the GT at a car show, down here in Southern California and I just wanted to thank you for everything you do!
Your personal opinion and perspective is of huge value Shmee. It is impartial and balanced, irrespective of what your are actually ‘holding’ at the time. This is why we keep coming back, in my humble opinion. Keep it going!
The last two videos have been my favourite of yours. First hand experience and real world feedback. Keep it up 👍
You have probably got one of the best UA-cam car collections
Thank you
He has 9 cars(most of them are suoercars) and even Doug Demouro and Alexandra Hirschi doesnt have that much amount of car.
@@hmjarifhasan97 Doug is not really a car collector though 🤷🏻♂️
@@981porsche3 But he is the 2nd best automobile youtuber in the world. And he bought some cars also.
Really missed the FFT episodes! Good to see one back and get an insight in the functioning of all this!
Many car youtubers will come and go. But shmee will be always the best😍
Shmee and Strad they are the best no question
@@Acriore stradman is alright but I am not a fan of his fake personality for his child audience. It really kills the vibe and makes me think I am watching a kid's show lol.
Great vlog Shmee. I admire the honesty. Much respect. And thanks for being so level headed. Keep up the good work. It’s clear how much time and effort you invest into your channel.
Love these videos! Some of your best content you do is you just sharing your knowledge with the fans
Good video. Tim you're more realistic than most people who are buying supercars
Love these ones the best when you just sit and talk to us ...
I really appreciate how Shmee can talk for almost 20 minutes without jumpcuts, unlike other channels that can't even string 5 words together before a cut. Makes it so much more enjoyable to listen to.
Thank you very much for your perspective on the car collecting hobby. We respect and appreciate your knowlege, Tim.
Bloody epic video. Someone talking sense about vehicles and their prices. Well done Tim
I love watching these educational videos from Tim. I Learn quite a lot from these and they don't even feel as long as it says. Thank you Tim!

Hi Shmee just wanna say how much of an inspiration you are to me. Thanks for always putting a smile on our faces during this time.
You are so welcome, thanks for watching
Great video Tim, love your transparency. More car “influencers” need to be like you. So many people just have a car that they’ve “bought” (aka loaned) and show off in them,
Impressive, I realized that the secret to making a million is saving for a better investment.. I always tell myself you don’t need that new BMW or that new Patek Philippe just yet and that mindset helps me make more money investing in the real market. For example last year I invested 100 grand in blue chip stocks (with the help of my advisor Rita Wildrin Mora of course) and made 450k, but guess what? I put it back and traded with her again and now I’m rounding up close to a million. Hoping to get to 2 In 6 months
The last 10-15 years of price growth has been driven by Chinese demand soaking up stock
One of your best - without a cold start in sight!
I think what you said at the start was spot on. It is supply and demand. They can produce more new cars tomorrow if there is demand, they can’t produce more old cars due emissions, safety etc.
It's 1:30AM where I live and Shmee uploads
So anyways I started watching.......

Hello there from the United States. It's only 3 14 pm From the United States
I could listen to Tim all day. Kudos. Keep shining
THIS is great content. Well explained, sir
You're very much correct with what you said about ages of cars - when a car is a poster car for someone who perhaps at the time is a child or younger adult and cannot afford to buy one, so they aspire to own one. Or a car that re-captures memories of youth. A case in point would be a Mk1 Escort. A few years ago, these were virtually worthless, but nowadays command some hefty money. So there is a potential for these things to be cyclical.
Great insight Tim nice to hear these thoughts ! And super interesting 😀
Hello Shmee, a great VLOG without an 'autocue', full of facts, really well informed from a person who has lived the supercar world. Regards, RichardA.
i really appreciate this video, thanks Tim.
The scenery is so beautiful and stunning.Very enjoyable! Reminds me of my trips where I take the good music like the Guns N Roses, Imagine Draongs or the Delta Parole and then enjoy the powerful feeling of the sea. ¡vamos!
Nicely summarised Tim!....buy to drive and enjoy and know that 99% of the time it's dropping ££'s every month.
I've particularly enjoyed these last two video's - real world!
Cheers.

Love your views shmee. You have always inspired me to follow my dreams
Brilliant video Tim ! Loved this one !
Shmee 150 was just brilliantly at the right place at the right time, with a vision and a plan, that’s all you need, I watch this not as a car fan but someone who is just inspired 👌🏾👊🏾👍🏾
One segment to watch is the interesting JDM stuff that's getting rarer as time goes on - Supras, early GTR's etc. Hugely popular in 1990s/early 2000's videogames, & idolised by a very large demographic who are soon to be entering their wealthiest years.
Well summarized, nice job, thanks!
I totally agree about buying a car to enjoy, not for an investment. When people buy for investment they usually garage queen them to avoid putting on miles. Nothing better than using what you pay for and skipping the anxiety about depreciation 👌🏼
One of your best videos. Thank you!
I love these kind of videos , thanks tim :)
Glad you like them!
I absolutely love your videos ! , Greetings from Mexico!
I like how shmee has the most unique Car Collection Out of all UA-cam 😁
I agree. Actually has some character and not just Lamborghinis and Bugattis
Who’s there to compete with though? Especially within the automotive industry? He’s got mostly German manufactured cars, a few English and a couple American and within that a lot of cars serving the same purpose, super/hyper cars and GT’s, RS and G wagon being the only exception. No USDM muscle cars, no JDM tuner cars, No dedicated drag, track, drift cars, nothing inherently his or personalised to be unique. No proper off-roaders, no project/kit cars, not even any older cars let alone classics, no bikes/quads/trikes or anything that I’d see as unique, I’m my opinion having the money to buy something other people can’t afford doesn’t make it unique, it’s just not often seen but go to the right places and these cars are as commonplace as anything, even that 1 of 50 RS is still identical to the 49 others around the world.
Indian Shquad here...been following you since the time of the black GT-R coupe....love ur content
Love your channel keep up the amazing work tim
Thanks! Will do!
This Tim, is a great video. Thank you for your content first and for most. The investment talk video is great food for thought being that I am one of those " finally able to acquire" grown ups. Sure maybe not Super cars yet, but serious sport cars for sure. Thanks again for a great video.
Fantastic summary of the market since 2008.
Great insights Shmee and really enjoy your channel down here in Sydney, Australia
I great video Shmee, very informative.👍
I have a 2007 911 Carerra 4S six speed with 79k miles. 107k car at new. Bought in 2016 for 35.5k with 75k miles . Will never sell it. Amazing driver. Buy what you like, as Shmee says it is the experience!
You are fucking good at this Tim, not a 'umm', 'er', 'like' or script in sight and you nailed this in one take - much respect - hope the TV moguls come sniffing around soon.
We need more of these FUEL FOR THOUGHT videos!
That's true. Buying cars and enjoying them is the best way to make the price tag look worth it. However,if driving is the ultimate goal, current crop of supercars are outdone by the likes of Singer 911, Eagle E-type and Alfaholics GTA-R.
New limited McLaren loosing their value...
Susuki Jimmny: Amateurs!
A lot of good information for those people who are or were thinking of purchasing super cars for possible profits down the road. Way out of my league for sure but I certainly enjoy Tim’s knowledge in these matters. 👍👍
I love your Videos and i love that you drive your cars i would do it that way when i had cars like these. You are a very inspiring person i wish you all the best for the next year
Very interesting, everything comes full circle. I find that in ones lifetime we all buy something that will one day make us a profit, it's just hanging on to the right thing. Let's hope some of the silly prices drop so we can afford the car from our bedroom poster! Keep up the good work Tim...

@@armandomorales3809 that car is amazing
I understand that owning a car/watch/... might be enough for some people but I strongly believe that using/wearing/... them brings so much more enjoyment. I for myself buy below what I could afford but having the experience makes it much more fun.
Love these kinds of videos! Amazing content
Glad you like them!
Totally agree with u. Buy a car to enjoy dont buy a car to expect to sell it for profit
Really informative. Thank you!
Tim beautiful video as always! I have one question: What do you think about the future of SLR McLarens? (My Abs dream car)
Your conclusion is spot on! Buy to enjoy, if you want grow your capital, go elsewhere! Privately, I fear for the Taycans value!
I would like to see more like this. As someone who eats, sleeps, and breaths cars I’m always looking for a way to make a living involving cars. You’ve sort of seen it all and done it all, it would be interesting to hear about careers, investment opportunities, etc. involving cars.
Felt this was the most downbeat Shmee video ever! Must be having a bad week. Just goes to show you are human like the rest of us! Next week you will hopefully be your normal upbeat self and make us feel cheerful again 😀
Nice reality check on car ownership and very well presented Tim. We’d love our cars to go up but most don’t. I reckon three is more than enough though.
What an amazing video, so interesting.
Thank you for your focus on this topic!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Shmee great information video well worth watching, cool 😎 see you soon 👍🏻
I remember when i was a kid there were a CLK-GTR AND a 911 GT1 for sale in southern germany, bout 200km from where i live and i terrorized my parents till we went on a trip and visited the dealer :D
10yo me standing between those two spaceships still is my favorite childhood picture lol
I remember some of the cars you could buy for pennies in the mid-70s during the gas crisis. Everyone in US was unloading muscle cars like Hemi-Cudas, 454 Chevelles, Ford Cobras and even Ferraris. You could buy a Hemi Cuda for a few thousand and the real ones sell for $100k+. I was offered a 246 GTS for $17k. If you knew then what you know now and had some cash........
The 2005-6 Ford GT sold for $140s new and shortly after could buy for less. Now they are $300-400k. The new one sells for $500-600k new and now have the 2 year no sell contract.
Hi, I’m a bit of a latecomer to your channel, having followed it for about a year now. I absolutely love what you’re doing here, and really enjoyed this particular video. I live in the USA (Washington state) and five years ago, was able to purchase what, for me, was one of my dream cars - a 1995 Toyota MR2 Turbo. I’m not sure how familiar you are with this particular car, but it was the final production year for the second generation MR2 for the U.S. market, and only 93 were produced with the 2.0 liter turbo engine. So having purchased one in 2015, it was one of however fewer than 93 originals remained.
I know this is nowhere near what you’ve been able to do, but what you spoke about in this video, reminded me of why I bought it in the first place. It wasn’t to see how much I could resell it for, but rather, because it was a car I always wanted, and could afford to get. I enjoyed it immensely as my weekend fun car for five years, and finally just passed it on to it’s next owner, and was able to net a small profit. Anyway, don’t know if you’ll even read this comment, but if so, wonder what your thoughts are, if any, on the second gen Toyota MR2 Turbo. Cheers from another Tim. :)
Interesting VT Tim. The best investment you have made is not your cars it’s your Rolex Daytona Ceramic “white dial” more than double your money. Another interesting fact, If you had not bought any cars and bought Tesla shares a few years ago with your we’ll earned cash, scary to imagine your net worth now. Stradman is in the same position. Tim love what you do, just my thoughts. Joe Macari is my main man for car appreciation in classic cars.
Similar concept though, if I hadn't financed a McLaren 12C with all my money in December 2013 I wouldn't be where I am now so it's quite interesting how different people take different paths!
Stradman had the same impact with his Lamborghini Gallardo , and then some VTs on the launch of the Bugatti Veyron _ they made him what he is now. Both Tim and Srtradman are the best in the business. Not advice - diversify into EV stock. Trust me 👍👍
Love the fft series 👍🏻
Loved this. I guess the ones to watch are the super rare, exclusive only (pagani, koiningsegg) And the pin ups of today that are not in demamd now. Certainly got me thinking.
Thanks Tim. I experienced the same increase in the Bordeaux 1st Growth pricing pre-2005 vs. 2005 and forward. 2003, 2000, 1996, 1995, 1990, 1989, etc. saw a 50% to 100% increase in the resale market compared to Futures pricing. 2005 and forward saw the Chateaux hugely increase their Futures prices in response to the demand (China alone adding about 30% new buyers of First Growth Bordeaux), and since then the resale price premium is long gone. In this case the issue wasn't more supply as with supercars, but rather the initial pricing rising to meet the increased market demand. This release price increase is what you experienced with the GT BS. The Chateaux (and Mercedes) stopped leaving a lot of money on the table.
Please do more of these personal opinions vedeos they're informative.
For sure, give me topic ideas and I'll do my best!
Love this, you should make it a series within the channel
I don’t think any car has exploded like the Zonda. Only 140 cars for the entire model life. We are oversaturated with these cars and the bubble will burst. Very good words Tim!
You are exactly right about the 458 Speciale compared to the 488 Pista values. At the minute I am waiting for the Lusso to drop a bit more. Great video.
Love the channel Tim. And when you were in Detroit with the Ford Gt at Ford world headquarters last year I seen you driving it there.
