Hank covered this one but it was written by a blind country singer named Leon Payne while he was waiting on the side of the highway for a ride back home for his mother's funeral.
I love knowing that now! I'm always correcting ppl when they say a song is by a certain artist...I have to say well actually that's not their song..so and so wrote it. Lol
My husband died almost 10 months ago. Today was a very hard day for me and a friend sent me the link to this song...he didn't know I was having a hard day, yet here I am...the fact that my husband looked so much like Tom Petty and loved his songs...my friend who sent this link...I know God is watching...and maybe...my husband is, too. RIP Robbie.
God bless you. i hope you're doing better. God created this world for us and he created another where your husband is now. you will see him again. enjoy life & be thankful.
OMG…I was raised on Hank as a young child and grew up with Tom . I used to tease my daughters “ don’t interrupt daddy when he’s listening to Petty “ but tonight on Hanks 100th birthday is the first I’ve heard of Tom Petty doing Hank. Just Awesome bless’em both!
Tom Petty is being typically humble when he buffers his statements about the current dismal state of "country" music by saying he's not an authority on the genre. First of all, TP is a professional musician to the nth degree ... he knows about composition, content, arrangement, and not just when it comes to rock and roll. He grew up in the South in the 50s & 60s, listening to a variety of music, certainly including country music. Good music is good music, period. I support his recent statements, and I hope it makes a contribution toward the country music industry upping its standards of quality. Thank you, Tom Petty!
Patricia I agree with you 100% about Tom Petty being humble. He is one of the most talented singers I've ever heard. When I read some of the comments people put on here I have to stop and think are they really speaking from their mind or do they even have a mind left to speak from.
I have said this before about Hank and it's true for Cash and Petty They delivered simple music in a genius way, all legends sadly gone wish they had left more
Yes he would.im a huge fan of hank sr thru my mom.who loved country music more n anybody.may she rest in piece.i love tom petty.he came along when the world needed a voice like his.somebody upstairs sent him down.unfortunately.took him back home.r.i.p tom.yes.hank would be proud.he was probly lookin down from heaven.smiling.
Hank Williams didn't write this song though he performed it and made it famous. Leon Payne wrote it. A very fine Country song . So fine delivered by Tom Petty. RIP
A superbly intelligent and sensitive interpretation. It's hard to believe that Mr. Petty, for all his talent, was able to come up with that in only a day, but my hat's off !
Great cover of the legendary, sweet Tom! Now he's singing this amazing song in heaven ,with Hank and Johnny. Thanks a lot for uploading and sharing it.
I'm a rollin' stone, all alone and lost And for a life of sin, I've paid the cost When I pass by all the people say Just another guy on the lost highway Just a deck of cards and a jug of wine And a womans lies makes a life like mine On the day we met, I went astray I started rolling down that lost highway I was just a lad, nearly 22 And neither good nor bad, Just a kid like you And now I'm lost, too late to pray Lord I've paid the cost on the lost highway Just another guy, on the lost highway (( Isn't that a great fuckin song?))) R. I. P. Tom
True - check your music history - he was broke - blind - traveling across country and wrote this song in a Salvation Army homeless shelter for men - do your homework before you give gratitude to singers that stole his lyrics.,
I did not claim universal knowledge. I am not a pedant. You need to read more carefully. I was praising the writer. Learn to relax.@@catherinecuffe8681
Considering he wrote the words down while driving and that was the first time he heard it I Think he Rocked it. I've always loved Tom Petty he is a good man with a great talent.
tgifgoose Naw!!! Tom Petty, the vest, didn't ever seen Bob Dylan sing it on a little 'ol rock documentary by the name of "Don't Look Back," did he? Naw!!! Came out in 1965. Dylan, y'know? The guy Tom Petty, impersonates everytime he opens his big pointy snout. No? Naw!!! He heard it on the radio that morning. "Wrote down the words while driving" with one hand and picked out the chords on his guitar with the other. Oh, look, the vest is impersonating Hank Williams and look, how he has magically tossed aside the Dylan voice aside. Now, that's what most folks call talent. Uhmm. Naw...Hey, Petty, pick up your money and pack up your vest.
He also lost his driving license:) I always thought Benmont Tench was mesmerized by just that talent.focus. Only excuse for the posthumous album American Treasure that ---- check it out --- Mike Campbell would have nothing to do with. Yes, good man great talent. Sorely missed.
I can hear this song and feel myself choking up. Just hearing and feeling the pain in the words of it. Hank Williams was a musical genius with a life of pain and anguish in his songs about himself, and never made it to be 30 years old.
I love it.thiers one point in the song.that he really sounds like hank.i love hank sr.he.s the reason i love country music.thru my mom.i think he does a great job on it.and a killer ass band dont hurt either.he.s not makin fun of the song.if you.d listen to the intro he does at the ist.the roots of rock n roll.come from country music.so true.so u haters.dont come on here and ruin all our fun.with ur comments.i love tom petty.i think he.s the best singer/song writer that ever was.i miss his music.
I know, Karl, but I was commenting on Tom's reaction after he'd sung the song, when he said "Ain't that a great fu*king song!" :D Tom was straight to the point, as usual! :) - Wishing you much happiness, Karl. :) x
I don’t know where to start, the story Tom tells about Cash, Perfectly played by Tom, Hank would definitely approve, then Tom saying how great a fu*cking song it is, it’s the first time He’s played it, heard it this morning, wrote it while driving. This is a great piece of musical history. RIP gentlemen. They’re my top 3 favorite musicians also. Great stuff. “Just a deck of cards, and a jug of wine...And a woman's lies makes a life like mIne”.
Tom Petty is from the Florida Panhandle. ( part of the deep South ) He was definitely influenced by country music . When he was in the Travelling Wilburys they did a song called " Nobody`s Child ". It was a cover of an old Hank Snow number and one of the saddest songs you will ever hear . I am not saying that Snow was as good as Hank Williams BUT Snow was terrific in his own right .
unreal like John Tom reached us deep down in are souls.I feel lucky I got to see johny cash in portland maine.I was 12 and Tom petty on his last tour hypnotic eye.luck could never have enuff of that stuff luck is good .
Written and first recorded by a guy who rarely gets recognized for the work. He wrote it one day while hitch hiking to Texas to visit his ailing mother. The singer/songwriter's name was Leon Payne.
This is usually not the case, but Tom Petty sounds so much better in person, and you can't buy those songs. Have downloaded a lot from ITunes, but Southern Accents isn't half as good on the recording as the one he does live. He seems to put his heart and soul into these. I guess he kept his Room at the Top. Will be missed.
Hope I am not belabouring your point but was always a little nervous when he agreed to sing with Stevie Nicks, a hero of my sis, also a musician. Listening to Fleetwood Mac live was always painful; did not hold the melody. By contrast, yes, totally this was the ultimate live band. And Tom also had a life-long sense of justice that benefitted other artists.
So glad n happy for Mr. Hank Williams and his mama, papa, and the entire race of who’s loins this great man came from, for some reason the ones we love the most usually leave quickly, I am absolutely grateful for his legacy, ol Hank jr n Hank 3rd definitely got their gifts handed down let’s say, I know who Luke the drifter was, do you?????

Why do people always come to UA-cam to poor their hearts out to random strangers😅
"Ain't that a great fucking song", said with such passion, feeling and meaning. Legend.
It is a great song.
Tom Petty is undeniable but this made me appreciate Hanks vocals even more. Hank was channeling pain that can't be captured easily.
Hank absolutely lived this song. Greatest country artist in history. So sad he died so young, but that was Hank.
Real country music does that 3 chords and the truth !
That was pretty good for tom.
Hank’s voice was able to cut right through that old AM radio
OMG…I was raised on Hank as a young child and grew up with Tom . I used to tease my daughters “ don’t interrupt daddy when he’s listening to Petty “ but tonight on Hanks 100th birthday is the first I’ve heard of Tom Petty doing Hank. Just Awesome bless’em both!
Hopefully he's jamming with Hank somewhere.
You know he is! Still can’t believe he’s gone
He's with Hank.
Great cover! I love hank, my dad loves petty!
he is all the way. i saw Tom at concert when i was in 2nd grade when hypnotic eye came out
The great singer songwriters from every generation are all somewhere jamming together . Rest easy Tom much love

right on....
Ty for what you said about, Tom, now we lost him.. May his music live on..
Patricia D I totally agree He was a class act and he hit the nail on the head when he said today's country is just bad rock and roll with a fiddle.
brilliant response.
I have said this before about Hank and it's true for Cash and Petty
They delivered simple music in a genius way, all legends sadly gone wish they had left more
Seven years after the posting & this is the first I've ever heard of Tom Petty doing this cover.
Great job!
I heard it yesterday for the first time on Sirius XM, forget which channel it was on.
Hank Jr comment brought me here have a good one y'all this NICE September 2021.
I think it was on the 8 hour documentary Running Down a Dream.

I'll look into that. Thanks!
Hank Williams, Johnny Horton, Tom Petty. All of them delivered a great rendition of this song. RIP Great MEN !! /CD

As a 10 yr old n 1949 rideing bike on paper route wood sing Hanks songs as loud as wanted, nobody sayen Hey keep it down
A superbly intelligent and sensitive interpretation. It's hard to believe that Mr. Petty, for all his talent, was able to come up with that in only a day, but my hat's off !
Sancho Quixote but it's not just Tom Petty it's the whole band that played impromptu wonderful
I believe it; this is actually a fairly simple song and these are some of the best musicians in the world for playing four chord songs.
What he said was, he heard it that day & wrote the words. It was originally written/recorded by Hank Williams Sr.
Country or rock, Tom Petty was a great singer, song writer. Still missing him today.
Miss your music, that song of Hanks was awsome,God Bless you both.
"Too late to prey" was the name of our punk band in high school, always loved Hank and Petty, "great fuckin' song"
I sure do miss Tom. What a cool, down to earth dude. So talented.
Fantastic version of this great song by my fave country singer! By another one of my fave rock singers. RIP Tom.
Fabulous version of a classic Hank Williams song written by Leon Payne. Superb ....!
Great cover of the legendary, sweet Tom! Now he's singing this amazing song in heaven ,with Hank and Johnny.
Thanks a lot for uploading and sharing it.
Great old Leon Payne song.
Hank Williams took it to another level.
Love Tom Petty, Nice old Hank Williams tune, timeless.
Flo grown here....Eternally,,, Have Loved and still love the Immortal Mr. Petty, Gator Born

Hello Salazar
Simply amazing... Tom doing Hank... I'm humbled right now..
20 years later I found my way back out that lonesome highway, it was a spiral road 🙏🌟❤️
I'm a rollin' stone, all alone and lost
And for a life of sin, I've paid the cost
When I pass by all the people say
Just another guy on the lost highway
Just a deck of cards and a jug of wine
And a womans lies makes a life like mine
On the day we met, I went astray
I started rolling down that lost highway
I was just a lad, nearly 22
And neither good nor bad, Just a kid like you
And now I'm lost, too late to pray
Lord I've paid the cost on the lost highway
Just another guy, on the lost highway
(( Isn't that a great fuckin song?))) R. I. P. Tom

With the singing of only one country song, Tom Petty became the best voice in country music...well, along with Johnny Cash.
That was awsome,Tom,God Bless you.
Who else misses the fuck out of Tom Petty? I sure do.
Two of my favs, Hank and Petty

Hank wrote I saw the light while riding in a car, not lost Highway. Leon Payne wrote this one.
Jose, when you try to reduce Tom Petty to a Dylan imitator, you reveal yourself to be a fucking idiot.
