  • In this video, we take a look at the kind of tools which I carry in my basic greenwood carving kit. After being asked a few questions regarding the kind of tools which I use, I though I would put the answers in a quick video. Thanks for watching...……

I fully appreciate every tool there Mark. It's apparent you cannot hope to carve unless you have the right gear to do so. I can imagine enjoying carving if only I could afford the kit at present. One day I will have that spare cash and yes give it a go. The Wye has of course gone down a great deal but it's left a lot of people counting the cost. It's nice and sunny here today. Thanks for sharing Mark and the mention. Sorry for the late response. All the best. Mark

Hi Mark, I hope you are keeping well mate and having a nice weekend :) Sorry for the late reply Mark, I have been commuting back and forth to Wales. Pesky work lol. I was wondering how the Wye was doing. I drove over the river Dee this morning and that is thinning out a bit, but still plenty of flooded houses and gardens. Thanks for taking the time as always Mark. It is always great to hear from you, all the best, Mark :)

I don’t think a new carver can go wrong with Mora. I’ve got the 3 you mentioned and they’ve served me well for basic carving tasks. I enjoyed the video as usually Mark, nice work.

Hi Baseball Morgan, I hope you are keeping well :) I agree, Mora knives are great knives for the money. I looked the other day and some cost as little as £15. For anyone starting out they are a bargain. I'm glad you enjoyed the video my friend. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment, all the best, Mark :)

Hi Mike, I hope you have been keeping well mate :) I agree Mike, I think we must of been lucky with the weather. There is a bit of storm damage locally, but nothing compared to the floods that some have had. Unfortunately I have still had to endure it during the day at work. I have spent the past few weeks clearing out brooks and ditches to try and allow some of the water run down stream. Roll on summer ay Mike.... then we can moan it is too hot lol. Thanks for taking the time Mike, it is always great to hear from you. Take care, all the best, Mark :)

I do the same with some of first aid kits. I was looking to see if you had done a new drone video recently..... but with the weather we have had lately, it would probably end up on top of a mountain. It is great to hear from you Trev :) Have a great week mate... all the best, Mark :)

Hi Mark! As always, an insightful video! I have the exact same ruler! It belonged to my grandfather (possibly handed down to him from his father). Now I have a use for it, hehehe. My grandfather always told me, "If you keep something for seven years, you'll find a use for it." It's been a lot longer than seven years! I'm still waiting for the weather to break even just a little here. It's been a miserable winter here in Alaska. Take care, my friend!

    • @markbailey2981
      @markbailey2981  4 роки тому

Hi Brian, I hope you are keeping well my friend :) I often wonder how you are doing in the winter time. We have had virtually no snow, but most parts of Britain have flooded and more rain forecast for the next 2 weeks. But looking around, you can see the early signs of spring starting, the buds are swelling on some of the willows and birch and the daffodils are just starting. Hopefully summer will be a good one for you brother :) I agree, it me about 20 years to find a use for the rule lol. I looked up boxwood. They must be made from the boxwood bush. I didn't see any trees, they all seemed like shrubs. The older ones if in good condition are quite collectable. Thanks as always.... take care, all the best, Mark :)

An insightful walkthrough and nothing beats carving in the woods, especially when it's not gale force winds ;-) The wood tools axe is great value for money, worth mentioning it's Chinese made and simply honed in the UK to a slightly better edge ~Peace~

All the same it is nice to get out and blow a few cobwebs away lol. Thanks for the info on the wood tools hatchet.... for the money I have been very happy with it. I made a complicated sheath for my first couple of hook knives, but then saw how ben's came and it is a simple and cheap idea. Once they get cut and ready for the bin, I thought about trying an old chamois leather and doing the same :) Thanks again Ant.... take care mate, all the best, Mark :)

That Robin woods axe is nice. I've used one a few times. My cousin went to get his a while back when we were going down on the river to set up some Kingfisher perches and he had a handful of chips out of the edge 🤨. Turned out his daughters boyfriend had been chopping pallets for firewood 😃 n made right mess . Not a happy chap 😉. Some lovely tools and carving kit there Mark. Think you're covered for most projects there. I have a nice scooped huge chisel too which is nice for a Kuksa etc like you say. I've been meaning to carve a new Kuksa for a bit. Not enough hrs or days in the week is there. Need to work 2 and have 5 off 🙂. Me and my lad sent an application form in for the next series of Hunted . That would be a laugh if we got accepted. You going to the Bushcraft show this year ? Cheers Mark, a great informative film and theres not much better than a few hours carving in the forest

Hi Rick. I hope you are well mate :) Glad to be back home, but wish you were still on holiday :) LOL, I have half a dozen axes with like your cousins at work. It does my head in. I make sure they are all sharp and ready to be used. Then when I go to get one from the workshop, they are all chipped or rolled. I've stopped lending them out now lol. Yeah pellets are a nightmare. I'm guilty of it my self. You hit a nail and my heart sinks...… you know it's a 30 minuet job working the chips back out lol ;( Ay that would be cracking if you got on the show. My brother watches it quite a lot. I don't tend to see much telly. But if you got on I would plug it back in. Yeah I should be at the Bushcraft show. I understand there are a couple. I will be defiantly going to the one in Derbyshire again in May. The Edale show is a bit later, so I will have to try and get the time of from work. But hopefully I will go to both of them :) Thanks again Rick..... enjoy the rest of the week mate, all the best, Mark :)

Hi brother, I hope you are keeping well and had a great weekend :) I find with most skills, if you leave them for a while then you soon get rusty or forget how you did things the time before. But I like the enjoyment of it. There is something soothing about cutting into wood with a sharp knife. I know the feeling of leaving tools on tree stumps. That was one of the reasons I why I went for the orange tool roll, so it can easily be seen when packing away. Crowsfoot look like make some awesome looking knives. They seem well priced as well. There sloyd knives look amazing, as do their friction folders :) I like the Ash handled sloyd knife that they make. I return back to work in a week or two for another manic season.... so I may have to treat myself at some point :) Thanks for taking the time Colin.... it is always great to hear from you... all the best, Mark :)

Hi Carl.... I hope you have been keeping well mate :) There are some great step by step videos on axe sharpening on You Tube. It is one of those things, once you have done it a few times, it becomes second nature. I know what you mean though. The first few times, you worry that you might bugger it up and make it worse ;) One of the best videos I have seen was Ben Orfords axe and tool sharpening videos. It is very easy to follow and the way which he shows leaves them razor sharp. I hope you have a great week mate :) Take care, all the best, Mark :)

Excellent my friend! I’m becoming more and more interested at putting together a very basic woodcarving kit, and this vid actually addressed a couple of questions I had. As a beginner, I’ll likely just pick up some inexpensive Mora knives to start out with. Seems like the perfect retirement past time lol. I hope you’re well and eventually the sun comes back out for ya. All the best Mark!

Hi Brian, I hope you have been keeping well my friend :) Woodcarving is a great pastime. The hours soon fly by.... and hopefully by the end you have something useful. If not at least the time was spent relaxing and honing a few skills. Mora knives are a good buy. They are probably a similar price to what we pay over here. Yes I wish I could talk about having carving as a hobby for my retirement. I don't think wood will exist then lol. The government keeps upping our retirement age. I should of retired at 65 with our state pension.... but now it is 68, and I have heard that they are thinking of making it 70 years old before we can finish working. I'm burnt out now with aces and pains all over lol. Thanks as always Brian for stopping by. It is always great to hear from you. All the best, Mark :)

Hi Mark, it would seem that you have everything covered although I did expect to see a bit of abrasive paper but seeing as my carving prowess is limited to tent pegs I wouldn't know if it was needed or not. I enjoyed the video, I'm a big fan of seeing what other people use and carry. Thanks for sharing. Be safe and be lucky, Wol.

Hi Wol, I hope you are keeping well mate :) Yes I should of put some sand paper in the video, but my age and memory got in the way lol. There are two schools of thought behind using it. Some will leave the work to dry a little, then very finely go over the piece again to remove dirt marks and tidy things up with a knife, and other sand them to get a nice smooth finish. You should put a small kit together. It is a nice way to spend the day whilst the weather is chucking down :) Thanks as always for taking the time to comment Wol….. it is always great to hear from you mate, all the best, Mark :)
