Thanks so much for the kind words Mark! Finally catching up on vids after too much travel across the US the past few weeks. As usual, I find the greatest joy watching your channel, and this one is “near & dear”! Blue skies to you my friend🙏🏻
Good morning Brian :) I hope you are keeping well my friend :) Thank you again for all the great items you sent. I have the alligators foot hanging from my mirror in the car. It is always a conversation starter when someone sees it for the first time :) I hope you have enjoyed your travels. I have been saying for years I would love to spend a few months over there traveling around. One day I will get the money together and have a trip over. Before I am in my electric scooter lol. Thanks for taking the time to watch and for the comment Brian..... It is always great to hear from you. All the very best, Mark :)
Mark Bailey Well you certainly have a place to stay and good food to enjoy upon your arrival! Lots of beautiful places to enjoy here as well. Perhaps we could add to your alligator foot collection😂 Take care🙏🏻
Have you tried using a leather belt to form the steel into a cylinder? Start it off as you have in your video and then when mostly circular wrap a leather belt around the cylinder. Then tighten the belt. This should distribute the force applied to the whole of the circumference evenly and help retain the shape.
Hi Mark, Great video I ordered the mesh from the mesh company and made one to fit my water bottle great bit of kit. went out yesterday with the family to Llandegla Forrest to go on a walk although a bit windy out stopped for a brew halfway around the fire ring worked perfectly. Your videos have inspired me to get out and explore and help me loose some weigh get fit and enjoyed the outside as in stuck in a factory all week. best regards Lee
Hi Lee, I hope you are having a nice weekend mate :) I'm glad you are finding the videos useful. It is nice to hear..... thank you :) I have just got back from Llandegla myself. It was still windy and raining!! I called into the fishery to see when I start back to work. I was hoping that the rain might give me an extra week off, but no such luck lol. Enjoy the rest of your weekend...… all the very best, Mark :)
Good morning Mark! Nice piece of kit and the beauty of it is that you dont even know you have it in your pack but it's very useful. Looked like a bit of nip in the air judging by the hoodie you had on. Falls coming! Take care brother , see you on the next one!👊🌲😎🍁
Hi Wade, I hope you are keeping well and had a nice weekend :) Yeah, the leaves are starting to turn a bit now. So I was digging through some cool weather gear (not cool in looks lol). They have predicted a bad winter here. So I had better think about wearing two pairs of socks this year lol. But nothing like you experience. I bet you can't wait to get your coat and trousers you bought last winter back out. Thanks for taking the time brother, it is always great to hear from you, all the best, Mark :)
Good morning Sel, I hope you are keeping well mate :) Many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. It is always great to hear from you :) A few people have asked me to make them one. But you know me Sel...… I tend to give most things away. I would win the worst businessman of the year awards lol. Have a great week mate, speak to you soon, all the best, Mark :)
Hi have make a few of these after watching your video using them great job .I leave mine slightly open and this allows me to use my simmer ring to control the flame on the Franciscan also extinguish the bruner when finish cooking.
Two pieces of pipe clamped together with a bit thicker material such as washers, works well for bending into circles. You can use a mallet to round the ends to remove the flat parts.
How do you prevent the edge of the ring digging into the ground when weight is applied? Very impressive piece of kit and well explained. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Bill, many thanks for watching. There isn't really a problem with the ring digging into the ground. The weight that I put on it doesn't really do much. In fact I sometimes push one side into the ground if the ground is uneven so that the item on top is level. If the ground is really muddy, then I sometimes split a piece of wood and make a platform to put the burner and ring on them.
Hi JT, I hope you are keeping well and had a nice weekend :) many thanks for taking the time to watch and comment :) It is always great to hear from you, all the best, Mark :)
Neat idea but Mark, the real lesson for me in this video is the bushcraft table you built. I stopped the video and took a screenshot of it. Well done man!! That’s my next bush project!
Hi Nowakezone Forever, I hope you are keeping well and had a nice weekend :) I still need to do a couple of small mods to the table. I meant to do them whist I was there, but time ran away. It needs a couple of X struts to get rid of the wobble and it should be fit for purpose lol. Nice project to do. I have a few other small projects lined up, so they might also be of interest to you too :) Have a great day and thanks for taking the time, all the best, Mark :)
Mark Bailey because of guys like you I am purchasing some wooded land an hour from my home for the sole purpose of practicing bushcraft. As such I’ll be revisiting your videos and looking forward to your new ones! I hope you had a nice weekend, too! Thank you for your reply and the work it takes to make these videos for us.
@@nowakezoneforever6021 That's great to hear :) I'm glad the videos are useful to you. That is what makes it enjoyable for me is to pass the things on that I was shown and learnt over the years :)
Definitely going to make on of these Mark. I was putting my burner in the bottom of a IKEA stainless steel pot, the one with the holes in. But yours is much less weight and more packable. Top tip thanks for sharing 👍 PJ.
Hi Paul, I hope you are keeping well mate and had a nice weekend :) I was looking at some of the things they sell in IKEA. They seem to sell a lot of things that can be used for camping or bushcraft type projects. The advantage of making your own, is the cost is usually cheaper, plus you can make things to suit your own needs. I'm glad you found it interesting Paul :) Thanks for taking the time mate, it is always great to hear from you, all the best, Mark :)
@@antonybuckley2645 Nice one Antony 👍. It's a nice simple project, and a handy thing to have. I will have to try the foil tray windshield. Have a great weekend mate, all the best, Mark :)
Mark I wanted to ask I fit my tomshoo cooker into my 14cm zebra Billy can or zebra picnic 14cm which is similar to msr seagull .I noticed yours goes into 1.1lmsr which is 16cm diameter.i was wondering if it would fit in the 750ml msr as that is 14.2cm according to spec .
@@antonybuckley2645 Good morning Antony, sorry for the late reply. To be honest I haven't tried to fit the stove in a 750ml MSR pot. Looking at it in the 1.1 ltr, I think the smaller size would be a bit too small. There isn't much space round the edge once it is in the pot. I hope this helps..... have a great day, all the best, Mark :)
Hi Stuart, I hope you have had a nice weekend mate :) Many thanks for watching and for the info. I see it makes perfect sense now. When I hear the word pitch, it is usually associated with tents lol. Thanks for taking the time Stuart, it is always great to hear from you :) All the best, Mark :)
Hi Mark... Thank you for the recognition I appreciate it. I noticed you using that ring way back mate and I always thought it was from the Pathfinder school. I may have to get myself some of that mesh. I recently bought some from a company named Inoxia on fleabay but it's stainless steel wire mesh, it's good stuff and you can cut it with wire cutters but you can't do anything about the sharp edges. I bought it to make a grill/potstand for my bushbox lf and other bits of kit but can only carry it in a cardboard envolpe I made for it or it will shred your kit. Enjoyed the video as always and found it useful too. Thanks for sharing Mark. Be safe and be lucky man. Wol.
Hi Wol, I hope you are keeping well and had a nice weekend mate :) Your welcome mate, thank you again for the burner :) I'm looking forward to trying it more and giving it a good go. Couldn't you fold the edges over on the mesh to overcome the sharp edges? Someone else mentioned that you could but something similar from the Pathfinder store. I'm not sure how much someone would charge for one, but for a fiver you could make a couple :) Thanks for taking the time Wol, it is always great to hear from you, all the best, Mark :)
Loverly stuff, Mark. You have given me some great inspiration for building a new wood burner using this material. Cheers from the island of Montreal QC

Cool little project. I used to make tons of DIY such as this in my old old channel as well...really fun wee project indeed. All the best my friend. -joel

I certainly don't have the skills to make everything, but these little projects are fun to do and come in very handy :) Thanks for taking the time Joel.... it is always great to hear from you, all the best, Mark :)
Hi Mark! Nice crafting project. I think tomorrow I will take a look at the perforated aluminium sheets we sell. Maybe they will also work. :-) Have a nice week brother. André
Hi Andre, I hope you are keeping well :) Yeah that's a good idea. I never even thought if aluminium!! That would bring the weight down even more and perhaps easy to work with. I suppose because I have always used stainless steel and most of my cook wear is steel, aluminium hasn't been in my mind for a number of years. You will have to let me know how you get on with it :) You have a great week too brother, all the best, Mark :)

All the putty glaziers i knew Mark had large thumbs LOL watching one of those lads work was an art. very good video Mark well done mate....... PS not boring at all 👍😀
Cheers Matt :) Funny you should mention glaziers thumbs. Most of the glaziers I knew their thumbs seemed to be bent back a bit more than most. It must of been all them years of bedding in rebates with putty lol. It's a good job I got out when I did ;) It's always great to hear from you mate :) Have a great weekend, all the best, Mark :)
Hi Robert, I hope you are keeping well and had a nice weekend mate :) Thanks as always for taking the time to watch and comment :) It is always great to hear from, all the best, Mark :)
Great video and thanks for showing the materials and how it's made. My pathfinder spirit burner that I don't use anymore has a ring like that and I've used it in conjunction with a trangia 27 series so to use a cup with that cooker, but for a bushcraft project where the final item lasts a long time which does allot is brilliant.
Hi Andy, many thanks for watching and for the great comment :) A few people have mentioned that the pathfinder store sells something similar. I started using them to keep bottles and cups more stable when putting them in a fire and it transitioned into what I use them for today. Thanks for taking the time Andy... it is always great to hear from you mate, all the best, Mark :)
Hello mark hope the weekend is going well for you bud. Thank you for this video, it’s quite an easy process to make one by the looks of things and will obviously last a life time. I’m sure you’ve pleased a lot of people y posting this how to video. Thanks mate, Ant 👍
Hi Ant, I hope you had a nice weekend mate :) I've been stuck at work, teaching kids fishing in the rain. Well undoing tangles in the rain lol. Yeah the process is dead simple mate. I failed metal work, so if I can do it anyone can!! Thanks for taking the time Ant, it is great to hear from you, all the best, Mark :)
Hi Michael, I hope you are keeping well mate :) I wouldn't have had a clue what the pitch was, but it makes sense what it is. I'm used to the word pitch when used with tents lol. Thanks for taking the time to watch and for the comment Michael. It is always great to hear from you :) I have been putting that charred cloth in my flint and steel kit this morning. Hopefully get some used this week :) Have a great day, all the best, Mark :)
Pitch can mean tar, can mean the tone in music, can be used in golf 🏌️♂️ as in pitch and putt. As in tent ⛺️ pitching, than in engineering, so the pitch of a thread on a machine screw or bolt. Then in this Engineering context for the hole and space between them. I’m sure there’s some I’ve missed. Glad the flint and char is getting used ❤️ Have a cracking week 👍🏻
@@Yorkshiremadmick Yes I am thicker than I thought lol. Thanks again for the goodies Michael.... I was going to go out today but it is chucking down AGAIN..... A really good end result Mark. I watched end to end as I read a book glancing up periodically to see how you were getting on. It was nice to see it evolve. You certainly like to craft things. Good job. All the best for the week ahead. Mark
Hi Mark, I hope you are keeping well mate and had a nice weekend :) I have always been more hands on. I was never any good at maths and reading and that kind of thing, but when I was doing my glazing apprenticeship I learnt how to make leaded church windows and different things like that and I found that I enjoyed making things :) They may not turn out very good, but I still enjoyed the experience lol. Nice one Mark I'll add this to the whiteboard list in the shed when i get home, just having a brew watching this before packing up, came out to the Trossachs for a bivvy camp but its getting a little busy already so I'm not hanging about. Atb Colin
Hi Colin, I hope you are keeping well mate. It is a good time of year to start these kind of things. The nights are starting to draw in already. I'll soon be in bed by 7pm again soon lol. Nice one mate, I love Trossachs. I used to spend a lot of time wild camping around there and pike fishing on Loch Lomond. Great days. I was only in my twenties so everything was easy. We would go for a couple of months at a time and end up on Loch Awe for a few weeks before coming home. Have a great week Colin, all the best, Mark :)
Yet another project added to the list (the backlogged list that is!) haha Thanks Mark, interesting too thanks for the links I need mesh like this for an air vent I need to make / modify for a vehicle. Cheers and all the best Chris

Morning mark another good video mate the old pathfinder cup set used to come with something like that I think didn't it. It's a good idea to make and it's a pretty cheap and simple project. Thanks for sharing mate. All the best. Chris
Hi Chris, I hope you are keeping well mate and had a nice weekend :) I think I saw something similar once. I think they came with a stove if I remember correctly, but I may be wrong :) I used to use them to support bottles and cups when heating water in a fire. I was sick of them falling over. Then I found that they fit around my Trangia stove so started to use them for that as well. I should be able to start that mask for you soon mate :) Speak to you soon, all the best, Mark :)
Hi Andrew, I hope you are keeping well mate and had a nice weekend :) I agree, God bless the Trangia. The God of tea making lol. Yeah the table is still holding in there. Hi Tom, many thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment :) I'm glad you found the video useful. Hopefully there will be few more in the near future :) Have a great day, all the best, Mark :)
Alternatively, you can buy some 1/2 inch wire mesh. If it isn't sturdy enough, use two layers of mesh instead of one. It is really cheap. :) Or buy a large can of beans. Drill some holes onto it. Voila.
Very cool! My Tomshoo is my regular stove, but I'd like to try a trangia-style alcohol stove. Less setup time and less of a footprint in my pack. Thanks Mark!
Hi Rich, I hope you are keeping well and had a nice weekend :) I agree the tomshoo wood gas stoves are excellent. But like you say for speed and at times laziness lol, the spirit stoves are a great alternative. They are light weight, easy to use and clean, considering you are burning wet fuels. I often carry it for my longer trips and use it in conjunction with the Tomshoo stove, but I always take it for short trips and day hikes etc. I can't remember the last time I used a gas stove. I have a few here that haven't been used in a long while. If you haven't tried a spirit stove you should give them a try. You can pick one up of eBay for a few dollars and there is a wide selectin of fuels to burn in them. Again usually low cost. Thanks for taking the time Rich :) It is always great to hear from you, all the best, Mark :)
Hi mark , fire ring is Awesome if I had not ordered one from China I would of tried make my own .. great vid good to make your own , looks good as well , cheers Chris & Sam
Hi Chris and Sam :) many thanks for watching mate :) I'm glad you got sorted. But if you ever need a spare fire ring, I have a few pieces of the metal sheeting left over :) Have a great weekend guys, all the very best, Mark :)
Really Great idea Mark, what a fantastic lightweight stove system. Brilliant for the mountains and lightweight trecking but also great just in a small bushcraft pack. I quite often carry just a shoulder pack without a lot of space so I think I'll knock one of these up at some stage 👍. Nice one Mark, thanks for sharing. Looked a nice chilled out bit of time in the forest and cool to find the old hammer again. It's such a good little design I'm surprised they don't make these commercially and sell them with the stove and a bottle. Cheers Mark, have a great week anyway, Autumn is definitely on its way. Love this time of year when I can break out some of my warmer out door gear and you start appreciating the warmth and light from a fire 🔥🙂. All the best fella 👍
Hi Rick, I hope you are keeping well mate and everything is going well for you :) I think you can something similar commercially, but I'm not sure what they are like. I've been knocking these up for donkeys years. Originally I used to use the to sit my mug in the fire, but just off the bottom. Plus it holds bottles stable if you also put them in the fire. Then once I started using Trangia burners I found they were the right size to fit over the top and use it as a pot or mug stand. If you want to make one, let me know and I can cut you one of the blanks out, as it will leave just the forming to do. I still have some steel left over here. I agree, Autumn and Spring are my favourite times of the year. I've got a new jacket I'm trying, so this will be a good time of year to wear it :) I hope your weekend it going good mate :) It is always a pleasure to hear from you Rick, all the best, Mark :)

Really useful Mark. I currently used the firebox nano with x case and that’s pretty small but this would be a good option too. What’s the smock from btw? Looks like a wool one and was trying to find a women’s cut if there is such a thing yet.

Hi Donald, that is a great idea, I never thought of using hose clamps. I've got a fishery full of them as well. I'm sure they wont miss one lol. I hope you have had a nice weekend Donald, all the best, Mark :)
I use khantal wire which has 1600°C MELTING POINT it bought in the UK through amazon and the crazy wire company. 1. 2 mm gauge or thicker I use it to hold the charcoal and its ability to not melt or rust. It enables me to use the least amount of charcoal and you control the heat by limiting the air intake at the bottom by simple flat on ground for delicate pork sausage and chicken. Or for steak straight flat out heat lift clear. I take it on holiday in the cabin luggage to Greece and have the quickest souvlaki in my own time and place. I'm pretty chuffed with the eco friendliness of its economic use of charcoal
Hi Mark, great video, I will definitely be making one of these. May try the titanium, in the past I have used the type of alcohol stoves that have a built in pot rest but the trangia has so many benefits over those. Like the simmer ring and cap. I like your fleece, who makes that?
Hi Tian, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) I agree the Trangia spirit burner is a lot more user friendly. As well as the simmer ring, it also has the screw on cap, so you can store any unused fuel in the stove if you have over filled it or just want to carry fuel in the burner. A few people have also mentioned that you can buy aluminium mesh which again would be lighter than the SS and probably easier to work with :) The fleece is a Helikon-Tex Patriot fleece in coyote brown, but there is a wide range of colours. Here is a link to them so you can check them out :) www.military1st.co.uk/bl-pat-hf-11-helikon-patriot-fleece-coyote.html All the best, Mark :)
Hi Mark, love your reviews and DIY videos, especially the fire ring. I ordered a sheet of SS mesh from the same company in the UK to make my own. Even with international shipping it was far cheaper than buying in the U.S.I do have one question about the fire ring...how well does it work as a windscreen? I'm guessing that the holes allow some wind to penetrate, but not enough to snuff out the flame or prevent it from adequately heating a pot. Thank you and happy trails!!!
Hi Dan, Many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) I'm glad you found the video useful my friend. On the whole it works quite well as a windscreen. Even in strong winds the burner has never blown out, but it isn't as preventative as a solid screen. If it is really windy I sometimes block it with my pack, but that is mainly to keep the flame burning evenly and not have it burning on one side. I hope that you get your SS mesh in good time :) Have a great week and thanks again, all the best, Mark :)

Hi Alan, I hope you are keeping well mate :) Once the size has been cut for the rings, there is only a small piece left over about 3x3 square, so I have binned them. But the extra from the sheet I have sent to a mate to he can make a couple for himself :) I was going to keep it an make a few spares, but I would rather send it to someone who would use it than have a few rings sitting around for years doing nothing :) Thanks for taking the time Alan, it is always nice to hear from you, all the best, Mark :)

Hi John, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. That is great news if I can get something similar from IKEA. It will save me loads of hassle in the future :) Have a great weekend, all the best, Mark :)
Thanks for sharing. :)
Very useful. Thanks.
Great film Mark, I have always admired that bit of kit and I agree with Rick that you could knock them out commercially. Cheers Sel
When you have marked out the size you want, screw the mesh to a thin sheet of ply or similar, and hacksaw through the whole thing.
When forming a new one, why not wire the 2 side together?
Pull to size or to shape...
Grand idea though...well done.
Very nice Mark. Simple, to the point, and very informative. Thanks for sharing!
Great video mark.made and use all the time now.

Nice bit of gear. Pitch is the spacing of the holes, so 3mm holes at 5mm centers, off set diagonally.

Very nice DIY project.
Many thanks for watching Earl Elzy....... I hope you are keeping well my friend 👍. Stay safe, all the best, Mark.

Glad the flint and char is getting used ❤️
Have a cracking week 👍🏻

Hi Chris, I hope you are keeping well mate and had a nice weekend :) I think I saw something similar once. I think they came with a stove if I remember correctly, but I may be wrong :) I used to use them to support bottles and cups when heating water in a fire. I was sick of them falling over. Then I found that they fit around my Trangia stove so started to use them for that as well. I should be able to start that mask for you soon mate :) Speak to you soon, all the best, Mark :)

Have you tried heating it a little, to help form the circles of steal. May make it easier to form.

You are in my thoughts and hopefully you will be right as rain soon enough mate :) When it comes to cooking trout I tend to do it simple. I'm not a fancy eater at the best of times. So I tend to clean them and simply pan fry them with a few cherry tomatoes and red onions. Or if I am going to bake them I put onions and peppers in the cavity, wrap it in foil and bake them for about 20 minutes. At work I use a throw away BBQ, but you could do the same and pit cook them :) The Jacket that I bought it a Paramo Pajaro. I went with the moss green and mustard lining. It looks quite nice, but it is the quality and functions of the jacket that drew me to it. I have wore Paramo clothing for over 20 years. It is a make I keep going back too. But they have made this jacket more for nature watchers etc with lager pockets for cameras and bino's etc. Good luck with the rest of your treatment Rick, you know where I am if you need anything mate. Many thanks for watching Steve.... all the best, Mark :)
Really useful Mark. I currently used the firebox nano with x case and that’s pretty small but this would be a good option too. What’s the smock from btw? Looks like a wool one and was trying to find a women’s cut if there is such a thing yet.
Hi thenicx, many thanks for watching 👍👍. Ths smock is an old Napapijiri Skidoo smock. They still make them and they also make a womans version too. Have a great week, all the best, Mark :)
Thanks for sharing this tip ,atb 👍
Hi Michael, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) Have a great day mate, all the best, Mark :)
Hose clamps to help tighten the ring shape maybe sorta like the wire idea
Hi Donald, that is a great idea, I never thought of using hose clamps. I've got a fishery full of them as well. I'm sure they wont miss one lol. I hope you have had a nice weekend Donald, all the best, Mark :)
I use khantal wire which has 1600°C MELTING POINT
it bought in the UK through amazon and the crazy wire company. 1. 2 mm gauge or thicker
I use it to hold the charcoal and its ability to not melt or rust.
Heat the mesh in an oven or on a fire until warm, and make the folding process easier.
Cool!
Thank you my friend :)
Exactly what I need. Clear easy instructions to follow. Would you make one for me please? I will naturally pay you. I have arthritis in my hands & wouldn’t be able to manage it.
Hi Sue, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. As you asked so nicely, I will do that for you :) I am working away from home for the next week, but when I am back I will do that for you. If you email me at markbay@hotmail.com, I will get back to you on my return. Have a great week, all the best, Mark :)

What you doing with the metal thats left over???
Hi Alan, I hope you are keeping well mate :) Once the size has been cut for the rings, there is only a small piece left over about 3x3 square, so I have binned them. But the extra from the sheet I have sent to a mate to he can make a couple for himself :) I was going to keep it an make a few spares, but I would rather send it to someone who would use it than have a few rings sitting around for years doing nothing :) Thanks for taking the time Alan, it is always nice to hear from you, all the best, Mark :)
Nice bit but why is there no new content?
Hi Donald, I hope you are keeping well 👍. I had to take my car off the road whilst I wasn't working. I had a few mechanical problems and couldn't afford to get them fixed. I have just started back after the lockdown, so I should be back out soon and filming again. Take care, all the best, Mark :)
Look forward to seeing you again your videos have great content and practicality best wishes on repairs
