Norse or Scandinavian mythology is the body of myths of the North Germanic peoples, stemming from Norse paganism and continuing after the Christianization of Scandinavia, and into the Scandinavian folklore of the modern period. The northernmost extension of Germanic mythology and stemming from Proto-Germanic folklore, Norse mythology consists of tales of various deities, beings, and heroes derived from numerous sources from both before and after the pagan period, including medieval manuscripts, archaeological representations, and folk tradition.
The source texts mention numerous gods, such as the hammer-wielding, humanity-protecting thunder-god Thor, who relentlessly fights his foes; the one-eyed, raven-flanked god Odin, who craftily pursues knowledge throughout the worlds and bestowed among humanity the runic alphabet; the beautiful, seiðr-working, feathered cloak-clad goddess Freyja who rides to battle to choose among the slain; the vengeful, skiing goddess Skaði, who prefers the wolf howls of the winter mountains to the seashore; the powerful god Njörðr, who may calm both sea and fire and grant wealth and land; the god Freyr, whose weather and farming associations bring peace and pleasure to humanity; the goddess Iðunn, who keeps apples that grant eternal youthfulness; the mysterious god Heimdallr, who is born of nine mothers, can hear grass grow, has gold teeth, and possesses a resounding horn; the jötunn's son, the god Loki, who brings tragedy to the gods by engineering the death of the goddess Frigg's beautiful son Baldr; and numerous other deities.
Most of the surviving mythology centers on the plights of the gods and their interaction with several other beings, such as humanity and the jötnar, beings who may be friends, lovers, foes, or family members of the gods. The cosmos in Norse mythology consists of Nine Worlds that flank a central sacred tree, Yggdrasil. Units of time and elements of cosmology are personified as deities or beings. Various forms of a creation myth are recounted, where the world is created from the flesh of the primordial being Ymir, and the first two humans are Ask and Embla. These worlds are foretold to be reborn after the events of Ragnarök when an immense battle occurs between the gods and their enemies, and the world is enveloped in flames, only to be reborn anew. There the surviving gods will meet, and the land will be fertile and green, and two humans will repopulate the world.
Norse mythology has been the subject of scholarly discourse since the 17th century, when key texts attracted the attention of the intellectual circles of Europe. By way of comparative mythology and historical linguistics, scholars have identified elements of Germanic mythology reaching as far back as Proto-Indo-European mythology. During the modern period, the Romanticist Viking revival re-awoke an interest in the subject matter, and references to Norse mythology may now be found throughout modern popular culture. The myths have further been revived in a religious context among adherents of Germanic Neopaganism.

I believe all of the “Gods” are real and called different names based on region. I personally believe it all goes back to Atlantis and the original people who built the pyramids all over the world that the Vril of the NAZI were in contact with which gave them knowledge on how to build the “Bell” which now CERN has become. They were vastly ahead in technology than the rest of the world because they were in contact with our Ancient Gods hence their symbols. CERN is built in an area called in ancient times Apollicum (Roman). It was for Apollyon “the destroyer” which is why CERN has a statue of Shiva the destroyer at its entrance. They are all the same deities going back to indo European times which go even further back to Atlantian times. Jesus and the Christian Bible was created by the Romans to confuse and control the masses and it’s worked since.

He does not seem to claim that they are just distinct entities nor just symbolic. Animistic cultures are not hung up on the mind body dichotomy ( the realm of forms vs the realm of ideas) that influenced Christianity. Both views are correct and complimentary when put in their correct contexts.

@@janvanaardt3773 yes and no, I would disagree with your broad and generalized assertion, and the comparison to Christianity is way off. Without looking into the animistic outlooks of tribal societies it is easy to adopt the modern nihilist view that is so dismissive of anything "spiritual". While Christianity was invented as it appropriated ideas from the pagan world, the true pagan experience is layered with varying levels of comprehension and understanding. The metaphorical, allegorical, and archetypal lessons as often revealed in the written sources become diminished when trying to interpret them from an abrahamic "faith" standpoint. The deities are real, whether or not they can be rationally explained within the confines of Midgard, they have a real essence to them distinct from our human creativity. They are also mythological as part of a greater collective of stories intended to teach us about ourselves, our psychology, culture, and experiences around us. The dogmatic approaches of those who are nihilists are as limited in understanding as those who would supplant their Jesus in the sky with Thor.

Its interesting you mentioning the gods coming to people in dreams. A few years ago, before I started walking this path, I was going through a really hard time. Went out to my favorite spot by the river and fell asleep while thinking, well, more like praying i guess. Just asking what the purpose of all of it was. My dream started with a long, long line of people flashing by me. Their faces looked familiar to me, but I didn't KNOW them. Then things went black, until I saw something spinning in front of me, like a single beam of light had been frozen and was now spinning endlessly through the void. I walked towards it and realized it was a spear. I reached out, took it, and was awoken by a clap of thunder on a crystal clear day. And now, here I am.

Agreed! It reminds me of a Scottish film from the 90's, called 'Acid house', written by the same author as 'Trainspotting'. The film consists of 3 different, unrelated stories. In one of them 'God' (doesn't say which religion) appears to a young troubled man in a pub, as a rough looking alcoholic middle aged man. He basically tells the young lad he's a waste of space and that people like him are all that is wrong with mankind (kind of like a dad that's disappointed with he's son), the lad asks why does he look like that if he's a God, he simply says 'because that's all your pathetic little brain could come up with.' (Or along those lines), then he turns him in to a fly! 🪰 i won't spoil the ending...
The whole film is a mind f***k. Worth a watch actually!

I don't think we will ever truly know what the entire Germanic world felt back then. I agree that much of it was symbolic so to speak. A way for our ancient forebears to explain things perhaps they didn't fully understand yet. Who know. But i also think that yes, there were those who probably saw the Gods as actual beings, be they human or otherwise. Other Pagan peoples did similar across Europe. So i don't debate the subject. I am concerned with today. And some days i "feel" the Gods presence, some days I see them as purely symbols and still other days i don't care one way or another. I love the Gods and all the other beings of the lore and sagas. They are us and we are them. I see a bit of myself in all of them. Yes, even Loki, lmao. Have a good weekend all. I agree and have had similar experiences that are universally documented in many different cultures, though now due to the non-dualistic nature of the Gods and spirits in general, I have found neither not believing or believing to be liberating (I found peace in the space in-between). My belief or disbelief has no effect on my experience of them, its like you don't need to believe in your mother or in anyone when you are aware of there effects and influence on a regular basis. When you begin your journey you might need to believe or be incredibly sceptical, but when you develop a relationship and practice devotion with the intent of just being with them and developing a beautiful relationship. It's like all of your cares and concerns melt away, you will always have a great time even around awful people, or organizations that want to exploit you. Provided you actually take their advice, and are consistent in your devotional practice.

Also admitting that you don't know everything, and that's really o.k.That just makes me trust you more.
I was bored and researched a lot of what you said in the university library, and much of it is spot on, near as we can tell, This is not an easy subject matter to study, as there are a lot of missing area's. where things have not been recorded, or worse, lost.
Moving forward with that kind of uncertainty and then being honest about what you don't know, takes spiritual, emotional and intellectual courage, since we all have ego's and hate to be wrong.(dont know why that is. being mistaken is just part of being human, we don't always have to let it bother us).

I once heard on a StJ video that the name ”Freyr” is actually a title, and the god’s name is Ing or Ingui.
Also, that is interesting you bring up that bit about Tyr deriving from Dyeus; there is some debate about whether Tyr was the original Skyfather who was later supplanted or if Odin was the original Skyfather.

    • @isty4491
      @isty4491 Рік тому +6

Pretty much all the Gods are Sky Fathers, and all the goddesses Earth Mothers, from a certain point of view
Thor and Sif certainly fit those descriptions, and (IMHO) point to them being older than some of the other deities. To elaborate a little Thor showers his seed down (rain) into the soft soil (Sif's womb), they make the land fecund with their union, but again this is all metaphor and such
The idea of Sky Father's and Earth Mother's started in with the Greeks, around the time they began subjugating women (priestesses and Goddesses) and raising men (priests and Gods) to a position of dominance
Much speculation as to why this happened exists, i think it was probably something went wrong, (famine, disease, etc) and the Priestesses couldnt get the Goddesses to fix it, and probably some greedy power-seeking men took this opportunity to shift the balance of power (and no im not a man hating woman, im a man, i just know how humanity thinks)
None of this has anything to do with the video of course

It might be a plausible theory as to why hellenistic cultures became misogynistic. Perhaps they thought that the subjugation of their women would cross over to their ability to control nature ( in it's feminine sense)? Thanks, you made some interesting points to consider.

Part of the discrepancy comes from different territories and times holding conflicting tales and beliefs about them. The interpretations on the spectrum from entirely literal to entirely metaphorical has likely always ran the gamut within a given society; some of the Norse likely interpreted it pretty literally, and some likely pretty symbolically.
The fourth has an explicit presence in Hinduism, where several of the gods repeatedly incarnate in mortal form. Vishnu incarnates in both of their major epics, the Mahabharata and Ramanaya.
The sympathetic magic goes along pretty well with incarnation and possession, given that, in such cases, it could be the very deity invoked performing the ritual or act.
I disagree partially with the syncretism, though; not all of the mainstay gods are entirely universal (or at least have profound differences with analogues among other groups) and groups often considered their own interpretation of a divinity as more accurate than cognates in other cultures. Again, though, opinions varied on that.

In order to debate 'real' vs not, 'reality' needs to be explored esoterically and exoterically and that is where delving deep into mythology and folklore can be prosperous. Norse mythology in this case depicts many 'realms' that comprise reality yet 'totality' would then need to consider 'source awareness' which we can refer to as 'Ginnungagap' and the dual play that defines reality with the primordial realms of Muspellheim and Niflheim teaching us that life/reality cannot exist sans this dual play. We can then delve into 'seeing' and references to Veðrfölnir the hawk sitting between the eyes of an eagle that is perched on top of the world tree Yggdrasil and Mind/Thought and Memory (Huginn and Muninn) etc ... so ultimately dualistic arguments of Gods are real vs not are quite fruitless when you dive deeper into what 'reality' 'really' is.

I’ve just started this video, and may amend my comment later…
However, I’m about a minute in and would like to postulate the following:
I do agree with you assertion that it’s “cringe” for lack of better term when some individuals suggest the Gods were/are corporeal beings manifested in our plane with their full strength on a regular basis, as well as claims they speak to them directly in clear verbal language, identifying themselves and so on. I’ve always retained a reserved ear, taking such stories with a grain of salt…
However I must keep an open mind, specifically referring to Óðinn/Óðe/Wotan/Woden/Odin/Oðen/Oden/Wōđanaz/Wōđinaz/Wodan(etc) as there’s a myriad of examples of him traveling Midgard under alias for his own reasons, an example of this is him presenting as Grimnir. This has given me reason to stay open minded to what’s possible, but nevertheless keep my wits about me.
    Edit: Clarity

There is also a couple of ideas to this. What idea is that the gods exist and took human form and then when time came they died. So in a sense they could have been human at one point. Not necessarily started as humans. Just decided to come down,be born, live and die. Another aspect is in what influence a God has on a country. Scandinavian countries each had their own patron God and even without consciously trying. Took the aspects of that God in both mentality and physical form. Thor for example was the first God brought to Iceland. Look at the men of Iceland. A good portion physically show what our concept of thor would looklike physically

He was not touched by the weakness and immorality of regular men and grew up in the woods all alone and it made him strong and he didn't suffer because it was normal to him. Maybe the gods were a highly advanced class of humans that were bred and born and raised to be badasses and also had some access to more advanced technology that was lost to other groups. They could have been so badass that the tales were told a little taller each generation and symbology was added on top.

It truly is what we create in our minds and our perception of those things.

Plato, in his dialogues, outlined the process of turning men into gods: Man, hero, legend, myth, god. Detailing this process would be too long a conversation, but historic records in many ancient cultures also speak of some kings believing that they should be turned into gods and thus, they undergo a deification process. The Pharoah, for example, was considered to be a god. Catholics have their saints, who originally were just people. Jesus himself began as a mere man, who became a hero/legend/myth, and ultimately was turned into a god by Saul of Tarsus.

Imagine Wodanaz or another chieftain/shaman, on a psychedelic journey to the roots and the well of knowledge (and perhaps even referencing the third eye)...could be a symbolic/hybrid recollection from many shamans over many generations and even between Germanic and another Indo-Aryan group like Slavs or Iranians, or perhaps (edit: Even non-Indo-Aryan ethnic-linguistic groups such as) the Balts or Finns or Siberians. Could be a mix of real world experiences and spirit journeys of chieftain(s) and shaman(s). The early Christian authors certainly had their agendas but, ultimately, by addressing our ancestors’ beliefs at all, they conveyed and kept alive the bones of our ancient stories nonetheless. Jesus’ journey is going through a similar process within our written historical recollection. A man, a rabbi, a mystic, with legends overlaid on his story, fulfilling prophesy for some, and turned into something else by various denominations beginning with Saul called Paul a century after his sacrifice. They paradoxically reveal this in their centuries-long attempt to discredit the pagan beliefs as they suppressed their own scripture and oral traditions/mysticism. Stories have power no matter their source. Our belief, interpretation and emulation make them reality. Having said that, I love to imagine a common ancestor named Wodanaz hanging out with fellow shamans from neighboring tribes like Tiwaz, making babies with foreign chieftan’s daughters like Frigga, and the whole time warring and feasting and gathering around the fire talking creation and willpower and eating the flesh of the gods (i.e. fungi) passing along ancient wisdom from before the flood...

No such classification as Indo-Aryan exists
Indo-European is more a language classification than a people, though it often is misused, and i guess you could technically say "the people who spoke Indo-European", but most just call them Europeans, but these would be very BCE (like 15,000), but by the time you got all the other Tribes you mentioned theyre all speaking their own languages (labeit the "old" versions)
The real Aryan tribe of course moved south and east out of Europe very early and settled northern Persia, and it is from them its modern name is born - Iran.
Also the Siberians and Fins are part of the Sami tribe, who are not, and were not Indo-European speakers, also not Europeans genetically speaking, theyre related to other Native Arctic tribes (European colonisation of Finland didnt occur until around 12th century (CE)
I like your pre-flood reference, presumably you speak of the civilisation we know only as Doggerland today, which first gradually flooded as global sea levels rose, sprinkling refugees all around the North Sea region, Britain, France, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and Norway (to use their modern names), and then suddenly with the eruption of the underwater volcano near Norway which threw a tsunami at Doggerland washing away so much, and all those who had refused to leave
To think you could once walk from England to Denmark without getting wet feet, and for those survivors to look out at what was once rolling plains, forests and swamps, and now was just ocean as far as the eye can see

@@isty4491 yeah I could have made it more clear in my initial reply, but I meant “other Germanic/Aryan peoples *or even* (worthy foreigners like) Balts, Finns, Siberian’s”. As in how cool if certain theories of merging traditions in terms of the Aesir and Vanir and Jotun, just as a though experiment, we’re the result of different ethnic-linguistic groups mingling…what if the dispersions/migrations brought together a more expansive cosmology, one that is based on individual tribal as well as intertribal events/wars/marriages/seasonal meetings as well as spirit journeys and combined ritual events…look at how Icelanders absorbed Christianity while tolerating the old beliefs, one of the only places in Europe that did so, and may have reflected an older value system that wasn’t so exclusionary (Flowers writes about Icelandic sorcerers folding Jesus and Lucifer into their cosmology for instance) or look at Poland-Lithuania, a Catholic (!) polity merging with a pagan one and resisting Teutonic crusaders (obviously this is an oversimplification, but still, way more tolerance than other many parts of the Eurasian/Middle eastern world, perhaps reflecting a more ancient system of integration and mutual respect…Doggerland, possible Solutrean intercontinental journeys, all of the things that are alluded to by ancient sources and that Greeks/Phoenicians/Egyptians reference when talking about the Atlantic Ocean, Northern Sea, the mysterious “Sea Peoples” generally, or just Continental European Bronze Age mercenary forces with their ancient Germanic beliefs, skin walkers, wolf cults etc. There was so much going on just in Hellas and Thrace and Illyria, various ethni-linguistic groups. Look at Macedonians under Alexander (also very inclusive and willing to merge ethnic-cultural cults, even if Greeks saw them as foreigners!!!) (Zeus-Ammon, his later descendants adopting Buddhism in Bactria!) Such fascinating history! Remind people of the legacy we inherit, modern culture has become so sanitized and sheepish!

An interesting note is that the Greeks considered those who viewed the gods as the personifications of nature as atheos. They were basically the atheists of the day, because the belief of the time was that they had been and were very real entities, not just man reflecting themselves upon nature. Also daimons weren't just evil spirits, but in later belief even the Olympians were considered to be daimons, yet there was a Source which the hierarchy of spirits descended from. I thought it interesting that that thought existed before Christianity.

Thor, I found videos that speak about wrongly translated words from the ancient Hebrew. If you watch these, so much becomes more clear! Of course up to you! They say that the word "Elohim" is plural, and means "powerful beings", and the word "Elyon" means "Senior", "Leader". What it comes down to is that there is a counsel of Powerful Beings, that is lead by a Senior Being. Each of the powerful Beings is guiding one group of people. Like Yahweh is guiding the People of Israël. Odin may be for the People of the North. It makes so much more sense! And it means we don't have to hate eachother! 💖 Here are the videos, be it that I can't put in the links to them, my comment is removed every time. But you can find them yourself:

Many years ago I read Gödel, Escher, Bach by Douglas Hofstadter - some call this book "The Bible of Computer Science". In one example, Hofstadter shows how a sufficient number of termites becomes a more than the sum of its parts (just as a sufficient number of human cells is more than the sum of its parts). Only a few years ago did science begin to recognize that it is the same with the tree and the forest. Just as the insect cannot apprehend the insect state, man cannot apprehend humanity (or the forest), as a meta-entity (at least not when his brain is in "survival mode"). On the other hand, all (meta) entities are holons (wholes and parts of wholes - Ken Wilber and Arthur Koestler). I think, in that sense at least, it can be said that there is more truth to the old worldviews than most modern people and societies will admit. In summary and simply put, I think modern science supports animism and polytheism more than it supports monotheism or atheism.
