Honestly from a teenager, teenagers are scary and gross, not gonna lie, they’re all so wild, and like just confused, refuse help and think they’re right, it’s a disaster recipe for sure, being wrong and thinking you’re the only one who understands things in this world

He said “what you got under your shirt will make them pay for what they did” so he’s talking about school shootings.

As someone who was bullied in school, I still get anxiety around groups of teenagers as an adult nearing 30. I understand this song now more than ever before!

I get how you feel. Was heavily bullied in a Christian School (Imagine that). Now I'm 32 and both scared and disappointed with teenagers today. I get what some of my uncles and aunts said when they said that I should keep vigilant at school and while traveling

Can't say I was bullied much. Maybe because I wasn't (and am not) pretty social and it's not that much of a phenomenon here in my place (I guess). But in my 36 (or a year ago) I found I'm kinda scary of people in general. Communicating with people usually gives me a bunch of stress. It's a challenge of trial (not sure of a best word here) for me. And maybe even gets worse.

"Maby they leave you alone, but not me" part is to me Gerard saying that: HE will NOT leave you alone, he writes music with his bandmates to let you know he CARES.

  • @tornado4376

I've always seen this working on two levels: one is as you said his own apprehension around teenagers probably from that ostracisation that he faced as a teenager himself, but also as addressing teenagers as an adult and telling them that the system will "care less as long as someone will bleed" and the destruction and self destruction methods that teenager take up as "revenge" on a system that doesn't care about them and makes them conform ("methods of keeping you clean") never actually end up helping. The insistence on a "herd" as opposed to a "clique" also working on two levels of 1) the ironic, pointing out the herd mentality that the system will force teenagers into, and here Gerard becomes the spokesperson of this system offering this lucrative deal as a way to shut down any subcultures/counter cultures that might emerge and 2) on the level of telling the teens that in the end dividing up and infighting won't help them change the system they will have to have a united front.
Please do more MCR, love your reactions!

He wasn't actually bullied, he was staying in the background, for me this song is about how fu...ng hard it is for teenagers, the atmosphere is getting worse. And grownups is in fear of what a teenage mind can do without! the support everyone deserves. MCR is always pro life and against violence. Loved your reaction, as always 🤗🤗

I always found it so ... interesting? that US people got the meaning of "what you got under your shirt" so fast. I spent years without understanding it was hinting to a school shooting. It's interesting how the cultural context plays such a huge part in the meaning of a song being inteligible (although in this case it also happens to be sad, but that's not my point).

    • @kali01319

I’m pretty sure this song is from the perspective of both him as a teenager and an adult. I.e. teenage angst scaring adults who couldn’t or refused to understand it, and him as an adult now experiencing the same feelings towards teenagers.

  • @50001mick
    @50001mick 2 роки тому +7

The symbolism of the song is talking about how people see teenagers. That is how society sees them, as dangerous and unpredictable. At the same time a cry for help. As you said, they scare you and you don’t know why. That would keep you away and lonely, not fitting in. Many get picked on but feel like the adults won’t take them seriously. That is when it gets to much and the line about having things under your shirt. Adults mock them, I am an adult and don’t have kids. It is kinda easier to see their point if you don’t have kids to picture in their place.

  • @LovesTheWarriors
    @LovesTheWarriors 2 роки тому +9

Y'all already know I'm in this comment section. 😂
So what kickstarted the idea for this song was Gerard being on the Subway in New York. He was the only adult in the car when a group of kids got on, being loud and making a scene, and though Gerard was the king of emos, a whole fucking rock god and even though he had been one of those 'scary kids' when he was younger, he realized that now as an adult, even he was scared and anxious to be around them. He says that it was the moment he realized that he was at the age where he was feeling like part of the problem, 'the problem' being the majority of society that doesn't pay attention to or care about the youth.
Couple fun facts about this video: It's heavily inspired by the video for Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana, and the dancer that played Helena in the Helena video choreographed this one, too.
And yes, the line "What you got under your shirt" is alluding to gun violence amongst kids, particularly school shootings.

  • @Maxwellish

i always had multiple ideas about what this song was about, but it makes a lot of sense looking at the lines behind the words:
“In this song, the singer talks about how adults are apprehensive of teenagers for no real apparent reason.
He remembers how when he was a teenagers “grown-ups” would be scared of him, and the idea for this song was born when he himself was old enough to be nervous around teenagers.”
“The song was written by Gerard when he was on a subway and had a panic attack because there were so many teenagers riding on it as well.
When guitarist Frank Lero heard the song for the first time, he thought it was a joke.”
at first i thought the whole song was about school shootings because of the video, but now the lyric “what you got under your shirt” also feels like it’s portraying the prejudice against teenagers,
the end message feels like a reminder they’re not endorsing any form of violence to teenagers who’d watch, because it could easily be misinterpreted.
either way, the fact he says “they said” before saying the teenager line feels like a decent give away, he isn’t actually blaming teenagers, as it’s referring to how adults portray them, and how he himself fell in that margin.
the idea that a crazy amount of adults see teenagers as trouble, but diving deeper into that you could see why.
    very cool song.

to me, this song starts off as his account of being a teenager (sort of)
when adults would all say “teenagers scare the living shit out of me”
then, he gets to the line “all together now”, and after that he stops singing the lead-in “they said”, and after that it’s him relating to what all those other adults had said

I was bullied through most of my school years, until in early high school, I started filling in the muscle to go with my lanky height, because I was working as a stagehand and doing martial arts. and I fairly quickly transitioned into my schools version of Batman, the black clad anti-bully, after one of my best friends killed himself and I stopped caring what people thought and started taking the actions I felt were appropriate and right.
And I honestly think part of the fear that this song is based off of is the very legitimate revenge fantasies some bullied kids foster, to then see them actually increasingly played out as the pressure increases... "That could have been me."

I was bullied incessantly for about a decade and it honestly messed me up for a long time afterward, up to and including lost job opportunities and years of therapy. If anybody out there is bullying people, consider the potential rammifications of your actions. Consider the possibility that you could be giving someone lifelong issues and insecurities. It's not just kids being kids. It's not "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger." Maybe it does build character, but that's for the ones who survive it. Let people have their youth. Let people do what they want as long as it's not hurting anyone else. They're never going to get the chance to go back and have a happy childhood.

I was 26 and Bartending when "Teenagers" released.
Each day I delt with guys and gals b*tching about their bosses at work. Then, they'd complain about their younger co-workers and High Schoolers that worked after school. *sigh
To be petty, I connected my flip phone to the Bar's speakers (separate from Jukebox system) and pulled up the chorus to "Teenagers", and when they'd start complaining about their coworkers, I'd wait for the right moment in their convo and press ▶️.. "TEENAGERS SCARE THE LIVING 💩 OUT OF ME!!"
After that, I made a bunch of song clips to have at the ready. 🤭

every adult generation heap fearmongering on teenagers, which is an act of abandonment instead of community. so adults holding teens at am armslength and considered a danger just adds to the stigma
i actually grew up a troubled teen in the 2000s anyone who had mental health or trauma symptoms (isolated, cant fit in, wore dark clothing, picked out as a weirdo and bullied, very anxious or angry, self harming, listening to 'weird music'(rock, metal) the stigmatisation was huge during this generation. mostly just teens who were queer, abused at home, suffering from mental illness, during their most vulnerable growing period.
this feels very tongue in cheek satire of that demonisation of weirdo teens being school shooters (which is what we were called)
the whole album involves a clncept character who went to war so some lyrics sound a lot like boot camp but also the commentary of institional mistreatment at american schools.
imho its social commentary on how teens are stigmatised and pushed to ostracisation by stigma and panic fed by adults to other adults.

"Darken your clothes, or strike a violent pose, maybe they'll leave you alone, but not me"
When you dress different or act out negatively, it freaks adults out, but he's saying he won't ignore or try to keep you down for it, because he understands what's going on with you.
I never got into MCR in high school, and I really regret it now. I wasted so much time listening to weird shit instead because I hated the idea of being a stereotypical emo kid, even though that's how I liked to dress.
