Gerard Way wrote the song after he was on a New York City Subway car full of high schoolers who were "running around, being all violent [and] breaking shit", which he felt was very different from when he was a teenager himself. He said in an interview "That was the first time I felt old...I was nervous and I was a target. I felt like I had become a parent figure or part of the problem."
He also said the song almost didn't fit on The Black Parade album but "it's a topic (gun violence) that's so important to our culture. It's about a really big problem in America where kids are killing kids. The only thing I learned in high school is that people are very violent and territorial"
The gist of the song is that teens are effed but the adults are not helping to make things better. The drugs referenced in the song are the meds that are given to kids to control them. Teens are told that they are "bad" and need to be "fixed" when in fact they are just kids living in a crappy world. The line about the kids being watched might be referring to the surveillance systems in schools, etc.
im a teacher. teenagers everyday ages 13-18 i teach. deep down i still feel like a teenager (im 35) but then i talk to them and realise how detached i am from them lol
I’m also a teacher in my 30’s, but no matter much older I am than them and have lived much more, I understand what they go through because when I was their age I went through the same stuff. Just because you feel detached doesn’t mean that they’re not going through difficult things. No matter how old I get, I still recognise and understand what they’re going through. Detaching yourself from those old feelings will just make it harder to help them. Unless you never had any hardship as a kid, there’s no reason to detach yourself so much from those feelings that you can’t help them through their problems. Not being detached has helped me be a much better teacher and person in general. Being detached also was not the point of this song at all.
This song came out the year my youngest started her senior year. I dedicated it to my mother, who was horrified by 'how much more violent even the clothes were' compared to her bobby socks and poodle skirts. Teens don't scare me, but all the drugs their parents put them on do. This song was a big social mocking commentary (to me) about all the news and police reports blaming so much on teenage gangs - since I was in mostly rural Texas, I'm calling that BS. Not that there weren't problems in other areas of the country, but the worst ours did was cow tipping. Yes, that's still a thing. But me and my kids had a grand time opening the windows and horrifying other drivers or neighbors whenever this song came on ;)
I was one of those teens. The school system wanted to put me on a bunch of prescription drugs because I defended myself against my bullies... I sat outside the principals office and listened to my dad scream at him for almost half an hour because the school wanted me on a bunch of prescription drugs so that I would calm down and not be so violent. But I wasn't violent. I was defending myself against other kids who were so much more violent and antagonistic than me. I got into my first fight with a bully and I lost the fight he told me if I ever tried to fight him again he would kill me. This anti bullying movement isn't the answer. It's the problem. Because they don't consider self defense into the equation. If you beat up another fuckin kid you are a bully. Even if you were just defending yourself. And it's affecting adults too. Because they are taking away adults rights to defend themselves too. Defend yourself. Fuck federal laws. Always defend yourself. And if you are in the right don't listen to Anti-Bully Karen's. Because 9 times out of ten their kids are the fucking bullies. I won't let my daughter go through the same shit I did. Mark my words.
I appreciate the theory behind anti-bullying stuff, but you're right - it's created many more problems. Bullying isn't a new thing, and each generation attempts to deal with it in their own way. When I was in school, we were just told to take it outside. While my kids were in school, all parties got detention or suspension (til I ranted at the school board). I'm honestly worried what the next evolution will be after this movement proves itself a failure too. Good luck to you and yours!

Ok so the story is that Gerard was on the subway and a group of teens got on and he got nervous. This made him realize he was at the age where he didn't really like teenagers, but he still reflected on his past as a teen.

Pretty sure hes saying teenagers can start revolutions because they like to defy authority and that scares the people in charge so they try to make them docile and throw away their aspirations.

“The drugs never work” refers to the prescription drugs for ADHD, hyperactivity, etc. In other words, we need to teach the kids not to lash out, not medicate them into suppressing their emotions and outbursts.
