Bought a high spec 2006 Treg imported from UK to Australia....its ridiculously comfortable and well appointed....great on diesel consumption and perfect towing vehicle.....recommended
The mpg figures really show how amazing my new M440i GC is. Just done 1200 miles all over Ireland and back across the middle of Wales to Bath. 80% of the trip was on twisty back roads and I got exactly 39mpg. That's from a 6 cylinder 3.0 petrol in an 1800kg car.
The atlas although the US Touareg replacement isn’t on the Touareg/ Cayenne/ Bentayga platform it’s on the MQB platform the same as a Tiguan. The Tiguan in the US is 5 seats but is actually our Tiguan Allspace (the 7 seat model) we have a shorter wheelbase 5 seat model in Europe with the all space as a separate model.

I agree. I had a secondhand 2008 for 3 years and replaced with a new 2015 R Line (but much discounted, through a broker). Never a problem with either and terrific for long distances (I go to France a lot). I traded it in against an XC60 - nice, but I miss the grunt of the V6 diesel. The one “extra” I’d recommend is the air suspension - makes a huge difference to ride.
I have the 286bhp Black Edition version of the Touareg and it is superb. Quick enough to give the GTI's out there a run for their money and will still return 45-50mpg on a steady run. Tech is great and the air suspension is brilliant.
We'll never get bored of your presentation style & honest informative vids Matt! If I lived in England I'd definitely buy a car from High Peak Autos! 👍🏼 Not an expensive one though cos I'm skint! 😂
Nice timing, I’m looking into changing my 63 plate Touareg (P7) to an early new shape Touareg (CR7). I had my first Touareg in 2010 and stayed with them ever since, I’m on Touareg number four now. All been super reliable, VW Golf on steroids….
Because he is driving a low spec entry version. Even the 2012-13 had reversing camera and matrix headlight, electric seats, leather, air suspension etc...
My father had a Touareg for four years with the 286 bhp 3.0 tdi. It’s been really good overall (though he had the top spec R-Line with all the bells and whistles). I really think it’s equally as good as a Q7 but cheaper. It’s got all the kit that you’d want (ACC, massage, heated and cooled seats, pano roof…). As you said, the interior quality lacks a bit in my opinion. We had a plastic piece broken in the electric tailgate mechanism and some other bits broken so it’s not all good. But overall, I do think it’s one of the better options in this mid-size SUV segment. Keep up with the good work Matt. PS: You forgot to mention it could have a big V8 TDI with 422 bhp until 2020! 😁
Had one as a rental in southern Germany with the same engine, albeit an R-line version with electric seats, air suspension, and larger screen, so enjoyable driving it down the autobahn, still very comfortable and refined doing 140 mph while still delivering 30 mpg, quite competent on the alpine roads too
Thought I preferred the light bar on the back in almost all scenarios….now realised after seeing both a good few times this more traditional light design is way nicer. Tendency to just like what’s new sometimes, but I think this design will age better
I had a 2018 R-Line Tech which I ran for 60000 faultless miles. Average economy was 39mpg but my record was 52.2mpg on a 70 mile motorway run with lots of 50mph zones. The R-Line Tech has full electric memory seats, a 15” infotainment screen and a fully digital display instead of physical instruments. Superb car.
A great car indeed. I must admit, I own a 2017 Q7. My only complaint is that I wish it had manual seat adjustments. It’s been a fantastic truck. However, I’ve had to replace several control motors. Other than that, we love it.
We had a 2020 286 tdi for nearly 4 years. 4/5 car in all areas, although refinement is 5/5. Fast, economical and capable if a little dull. Think big Golf rather than luxurious 4x4.
Clearly, in your case, there's also a small profit from UA-cam, hopfully that will help to keep you going as the content is very interesting and extremely well presented, and like a lot of your followers I look forward to your videos.
The touareg wasnt offered in a 7 seater configuration, because it has a shorter wheelbase compared to the q7 and the rest of the lineup. Atleast that is according to wikipedia.
There are many nuances, the 2020 and newer with new badges and touch steering wheel are more refined - heaps better base sound system, the air suspension uses adaptive dampers and goes much better over potholes and speed bumps. the 3.0TDI with 286 is great but shifts slow - goes great with remap, but the Touareg R is the real luxury - silent, powerful and loaded.
Owned a 2014 Touareg Highline and loved the engine and the ride quality. It's a great size SUV if you've got 2 kids and luggage. You can crush a 400km+ trip without having to change your position in the seat it's so comfortable. The bad? The things which are unreliable are immensely expensive. It shares it's underpinnings with the Cayenne and parts cost almost as much. I heard someone call them a "poor man's Porsche" and now i know why. Need a new front shock? That'll be $296 no labor. Need to replace the rear springs? That'll be $800 no labor. It just goes on and on. I traded it in for a kia van of all things, one, because we ended up needing to fit a third car seat, and two, because i felt that spending $4,600 in one year on maintenance items was a little too painful to continue and irresponsible as a parent. Do i miss it? Everytime i see one of by i reminisce. But now it's nice to just replace oil and tires in a souless gutless emotionally devoid man van knowing I'll get to point B no problem.
Loving the variety of videos of late, Matt, and the glimpse of a viaduct in the background 😃 I see you were coming in my direction 😂 looks like you had lovely weather for a drive.
I have a Toyota with rear camera....hopeless when it's been raining, absolutely rubbish at night when the lense is wet...so, optical parking sensors are more useful in my humble opinion.
Nice video Matt. Like the car too in V6 diesel guise. Practical, drives smoothly, a tad noisy but it’s a diesel and quite well built for the cost (bar scratchy plastics). Potentially good value really too. 👌👏
A great boat puller especially the TDI it’s a damn shame that the Touareg died in the USA after the 2017 model year in favor of the American made Atlas🤦🏿♂️
The amount of horror stories about unreliability, regular large repair bills and poor build quality have largely put me off these. That, and the fact that the rear of the Touareg has somewhat disappeared meaning that in terms of body shape / proportion at the rear it looks like another boring cross over and less like a range rover competitor like it used to. Personally I would just go with a Lexus RX for proper build quality, reliability, helpful dealerships and a vehicle that is still actually built to last decades. As a 39yr old man maybe I'm pushing middle age and my priorities are shifting but ultimately most German cars are built to break nowadays and most of us don't have the time, money, nor patience for polished turds of vehicles.
I am with you on the seats , I really cant understand why seats dont come electric even some BMW's dont have them its a pet hate of mine even leather seats on a car that was expensive when bought new doesnt make sense. These are a practical car but nothing to look back at when walking away. I prefer the dash on these then other vw models ( hate the mounted screens on others )
Great review. Now seeing the Touareg in a new light. Ever thought of doing some sort of Doug Score? A Matt Meter so to speak. Folks like that kind of stuff
It looks boring in this spec and wheels don't fill the arches enough; you'd need an R Line. Also think its unnecessarily large for UK roads.....still love your videos though Matt 👍

I had a 2003 R5 in 2006, main dealer sold it to me with a new mot and two worn back tyres, i bought it to tow my 3t trailer, it did but obviously didn't like it cos the centre rubber in the propshaft went, what a nightmare they wouldn't repair it, they insisted on a new shaft, i found someone in birmingham who repaired it, then the bad design internal water pump rusted, I'd missed the recall, that caused my turbo to blow, i repaired the pump myself then got ripped off by a turbo repair place in Durham so I gave it away.
I have got a 2013 Touareg r line mk2 & had it for 4 years & love it & thinking of upgrading to a mk3,just had it serviced & she’s done 140k now any thoughts for you matt or your wonderful subs, thanks in advance
I had a new shape Skoda superb sport line on an 18 plate, nice looking car but everything just screamed out “recycled” rather than luxury. The DSG box is crap too. I went straight back to bmw.
Volkswagen seem to have odd ideas when it comes to reversing cameras. I have a VW Arteon R-Line and it doesn’t have one whereas the lower spec Excellence and the higher spec R do have one.
The R Line Tech is the one to have. It comes with digital dials and a large touch screen.
More sense than money, I like that one.
The V10 diesel was an awesome beast. I remember the advert where you saw an image of the crank pulley and the sound of the engine ticking over ! Stump pulling torque!
Clarkson I think actually did the tree thing 😅
It seems this is the bare bone version. One tier above and you get electric seat and other amenities.
Digital cluster, bigger screen, bigger & better rims, more handsome bumpers etc.
This one literally has nothing typical VW/Porsche charge you for everything
Poverty spec
Will age better though, that big screen in the top model isn't pretty
Why would anyone get a base spec car
Mid 30s economy, that's rubbish, more like a car from the 70s.

Spot on.
Sold a Mk3 4 months R line with no rear air suspension. It replaced a X5. Gone back to an X5 again, for me the X5 is better on so many levels.
better than Top Gear. Very informative. 😊😊
