Light switch is about 15 quid from china, you can also get new window switches for a few quid. When it comes to the centre console buttons, you either buy a set of vynil wrap stickers for them or get the buttons replaced. Either of these options would massively improve that interior 👌
With the Toureg and the ML for less money than a six year old Fiesta, I certainly wouldn't be doubting the costs Matt, pair of belting motors and hats off to Jimmy, paint looks like a mirror finish, the guy knows his craft , well done all round 👍
I had one of these in silver and it was a great car. You forgot to mention it has low range which 99 percent of soft road SUVs don't anymore. Those shitty German interiors are so bad the way all the surfaces degrade. Just look at how BMWs interior handles turn to black goo.
My Mum's on her 2nd Touareg and she wouldn't have any other car now. She loves them. At 74 years old with her current 2016 model it will see out her driving life. Great job Matt 👏
I really enjoy your videos and think you’re a decent guy with whom to do business with. However, the best thing about your videos is Jimmy the Magician’s work. Fella is a legend.
I paid €8500 for a lovely high Spec 2010 Lexus RX 450H yesterday. I'm now feeling better about my 28mpg average🙂. It's red too! 179000 miles but drives like new! Can't beat old skool!😎
'I've massively overspent on...' is becoming a popular theme, hot on the heels of 'I bought a cheap...' and 'Should you buy a...' Great content, as always.
Best colour & rarely seen, had one exactly the same many years ago that bought my now adult son home from hospital when born. Dog/winter car duties nowadays is an 04 Cayenne Turbo that thankfully only does about 100 miles a month averaging 12 mpg😂. This platform of early Touareg /Cayenne are great workhorses
I've said it before, I'm a massive fan of the Touareg. A mate of mine runs one with 'proper' tyres and it's surprisingly capable off road. They are roomy, comfortable, great for a long journey if you need to haul people or gear, and tons of torque.
Consider changing fluids in all different differentials (front, center, rear). For Cayennes atleast, the center diff is a known part to have issues if left unserviced.
As you're friends with Mike Brewer I seem to remember an episode of "Wheeler Dealers" the Maserati 3200 gt episode, where he Refurbished all the buttons in the car, so if you get on to him I'm sure he'll give you the contact.
I have the Porsche Cayenne 955 with that engine in & to be fair they share a lot in common but you nailed it Matt, it is the sweet spot between old almost unusable 4x4s and modern SUVs. If you can get over the costs they make a great everyday car as you can do literally everything in them. Oh and I massively overspent on mine, £4,600 to buy and another £2.5k on top so don't feel too bad!
@tikkathreebarrels Yes and no really - the cayenne uses the engine and some components & other parts from the VW group so it's not a 'true' porsche but there is a notable difference between the two in terms of overall refinement. However if you just want that cracking engine and are not really fussed about the looks & refinement difference then the VW is a much better buy. For me though I am happy to pay the premium for the cayenne & I really do love the fact it's a bit silly & shouldn't really exist these days. Life is too short not to just buy a car that makes you smile.
The transmission noise is very likely the front differential pinion bearings, Mk1 Touaregs had an issue with them. The Mk1 facelift onwards didn’t have this problem.
Remember going for a spin in a work colleagues one of these about 10 years ago, and I’m sure he said it was a 5.0 V10 diesel! Unbelievable torque whatever it was!
I have a 20-year old BMW E46 and the switches and buttons are in so much better condition than this VW. What on earth did VW use to paint these? They are awful.
Nice choice for a real capable SUV, far away from actual useless anything-but-sporty-and-utility examples. No faulty antipolution systems. No ridiculous downsized engine. Easy to found and cheap parts. Really, really nice
"You should never change just one suspension spring" I agree. I do however remember that when you had a Dacia you changed just one of the springs, and when I pointed this out you got the hump!
The noise from the front could be the bearings in the front diff. Change the oil and if it has metallic particles, 100% the noise is from the bearings.
with the strange noise... you said Gearbox was done and a new prop-shaft was already in... but what about the rear differential? not sure what it has at the front, might be one of them thats built into the gearbox. at that sort of age your going to have wear and new fluid has quietened it down a bit. so my guess is it was the front Diff and new fluid has fixed it for now, might be fine for years
5:37 you could find replacement parts new or nearly new and just replace them, you’d probably pay more restoring than just simply replacing these parts
Volkswagens have always had a tendency to fog up in many situations?! Anytime Matt shows an older car that has lots of mold growing in it, it’s probably a Volkswagen. I know from experience. By now I know how to avoid that problem. Good luck Matt. One personal tip, have a chrome or black roof rack put on. That adds a nice finishing touch.
Great car Matt, it'll be a classic one day in the same vein as a Merc SL; over-engineered, tank like beauty. One of the few SUVs with a lockable diff, it will go anywhere. There's a reason you see loads of mk1 Touaregs in Africa!
I'd buy that for 3500! That will probably be more fun to drive than most brand new SUVs. The smile on your Matt's face when he puts his foot down is why he's keeping it. That and Jimmy's paint work 😂
A really nice car and definitely worth spending money on it to save it. The 3.2V6 is superb and very reliable My 2006 Golf R32 is spot on and sounds great always puts a big smile on my face. The widow switches and trim are a cheap easy fix to do yourself as well as the head light switch. Regarding the radio it might be worth looking on internet to find a good second hand replacement. Lovely looking car. Credit to Jimmy the magician. My local body shop charges a lot for very little. My wife decided to change her auto gearbox fluid for her SLC cost me £500 and that was from a specialist. Perhaps things are cheaper up north. I’m sure Temu sell kits for VW’s that cover all of those worn switches. Great job Matt👍👍
Probably not a smart decision, but a superbly built vehicle!!… better than any MB or BMW of the same era! The paint clearcoat did suck, but the actual paint was superior to the other Germans… thick AF! Triple doors seals (from Audi)👍👍 The de-vulcanising interior trim is not a common issue, most likely a female (even male) driver with residual perfume/cosmetic product caused the eroding of trim quicker than normal. The actual fit’n’finish of this era Touareg is superb.
Thanks Matt, great review. Was nostalgic watching this as I had 2006 model toureg for around 4 years before the turbo blew. The car cost a fortune in repairs over the years having the same coolant leak issue. Plus add in the road tax and mpg it was an expensive car to run. Absolutely loved driving it though. We have had a 2 never SUVs since and nothing compares to the drive and feeling inside of a toureg. Keep up the hard work.
Glad to see your keeping it Matt. It's a lovely motor is that touareg. I agree the colour is great. The noise they make is incredible. It's pretty much a Porsche cayenne 3.2 V6. Just one that can handle the rough stuff
Well Matt it would appear that at least sometimes you make economically sensible decisions. Setting priorities, avoiding expensive touches that would never be economically viable. A very nice vehicle with an excellent spec. The 1400 quid invested was for necessities and putting things into perspective just ask yourself "How much would it have cost me to have this done on a Range Rover?"
What an interesting topic! I used to buy fake stuff in high school because I simply couldn't afford what I wanted. It's desirable, and if I can get what I want from a kislux for a few dozen bucks, sure, why not?

Great video and car. I bought a cheap (by the standards of my country) Touareg of the same Mk1 pre-facelift generation with the same engine about 4 years ago. It had been poorly kept by its previous owner, and was a bit of a dog reliability-wise when I first got it (wound up stranded in the middle of nowhere with a failed wheel sensor locking the wheels, and no Internet coverage to be able to look up if there was any way to disable it via a fuse or something). I did the auto transmission, 4WD system service, new brake discs and pads, new coolant, fresh service (and then regular servicing from there) and have had a few other repairs e.g. clock spring sensor and most notably doing one of the fuel pumps which had been done by the previous owner but they had used some knock off part to save $ ... the fuel pump was covered by the extended warranty I had purchased although it needed replacing about a week before the warranty expired so it was a fight with the company to get them to pay the $3000 for the repair work. Will be up for new tyres before EOY and another service as well. Now it has been looked after and 'caught up' somewhat on neglected maintenance it's a great vehicle and I intend to keep it a very long time, so pleased to see another one fixed up.
We live in an era where many of us see £2800 (your spend on this car) as annual depreciation. Buy any SUV under 5 years old and Road tax is over £500. That car has years of life in it and anyone getting it for £3250 has purchased a real bargain. It looks fabulous and you’ve got the car properly sorted 😊👍
The vibration is because the crankcase and rear diff need to be balanced. If when they've had the propshaft replaced and it not been marked the positioning of crankcase and the diff you still get the vibration. Its a pain to sort one bolt rotation at a time
I was very out of touch with cars for sometime, until buying a 2005 Cayenne, and a similar colour to your Touareg, which are almost one of the same, a lot of similarities, sounded amazing, though being the Cayenne S, it would. In the short time we owned it, the one and only service we had cost at a local Porsche specialist over £1000, I had to laugh when IO told my husband, as it's not the kind of money he was expecting, hey, if you can't afford to run it, don't buy it.
I loved my VR6 touareg.....had to move to a q7 .....FOR THE BUTTONS ....the best way to repair them is to change them ...EBay is your friend ....they are cheap to buy and you can take only the faces of the buttons and keep your mechanical bits ...
@@gileshalliwell3591 there was a guy on the a2 Facebook group that was redoing the buttons for a fair price …not the cheap looking sticker solution but a new laser engraving
@@gileshalliwell3591 Any Audi/VW product of this era had peeling button surfaces. Its because VW used a "soft touch" paint finish to make the buttons feel nice and luxurious but they wore very poorly
I could never move to a q7 especially because the interior of it is pretty bland and ugly compared to the touareg, imo even the exterior is pretty bad looking
You guys are lucky in the UK. After this video i went on autotrader and the tax for the V6 is €143 per month in the Netherlands.. The TDI costs €275 per month in tax
Ouch! Then again, look at the state of your roads compared with ours. You get what you pay for! I pay £590 per year for my M440i GC. When it's 5 years old, drops to £180pa.
I had the Altitude model with the 3.0Tdi engine. Absolutely loved that car better than any LR product. I don't think you can do better for the money. Keep it 👍
The headlight switch on my old Octavia, I just went to TPS and got a new one.. and same with the window switches. Although I think a bit of touch up paint will fix your issues with the stereo buttons.
It definitely does not look 20 years old, and that V6 is lovely. Understated style only ever looks better with age, and the Touareg is a great example of that. Thought it was a bit boring and forgetful in its day, now it just looks rather stylish.
An SUV Phaeton is the toerag😜 to me, & that isn't isn't a insult, 👇its a complement. 👍 The metallic red paint looks in tip-top condition! 👍 a set of large mudflaps would also improve the looks, & serves a purpose as well IMO. & Was it available with roof bars? No! That would be adding more unnecessary expense, plus you want to sort out the faded paint switchgear as well.
Hi Matt, perhaps add a page to your website showing your collection of collectables, specs and photos. Would be like a virtual tour and enable viewers to Ooh and Arr over them without having to take them out on the road. Maybe a link to the videos you've done on each one. The Japanese got the foot park brake sorted. Press down to engage, press again to release. Its actually quick and easy to operate.
The way you describe the car while driving and then finally talking about keeping it out of the weather, reminded me of GTA days, where you stral cars from NPC's who drive them very slow, and when u floor it, they fly and you decide to keep it 😂
The easiest way to fix the peeled off soft touch plastic is to buy new parts. Fortunately that car used a plethora of standard parts from the VW part bin. These are still cheap and available such as window switch assemblies and light switches. There are sticker kits that cover over the flaking plastic, but these never look as good as a replacement.
Mike Brewer once featured a car / computer electronics company that specifically restores switches to like-new with laser technology. I can’t remember the episode though. Why not message Mike, surely he’d tell ya 👍🏻
Massive overspend... Matt is back on top form, falling in love for a lost soul. Hobby beats busuness. Mate, you must have the biggest drive in the country!
I have an old, high mileage SUV, and I enquired about having the ATF/Filter replaced at my local transmission specialist, and he actually advised me NOT to do it, on the basis that at this age, it might dislodge something important. He could've just said 'yeah I'll do it, that'll be £500 please', and I absolutely would have done it. It's running faultlessly btw. Dear Deirdre, what should I do?
I often think to myself, why doesn’t Matt switch the air con on on? I soggy Britain it would stop those windows misting up. I have run the A/C permanently in all my cars for over twenty five years and never replaced any parts or had one fail on me. I only had one regassed shortly after I bought it.
"Massively overspent" = Replaced consumables + minor paintwork, normal for a 20+ year old car. I'd call that spending the absolute bare minimum to keep a car roadworthy (other than centre caps & paint).
Hey matt, those 20 year old workhorses are starting to get appreciated again by a large group of people. Would love to see a newer review of the E53 X5, this car is a legend!
I like these. Almost a Porsche Cayenne for VW money. You should have fitted 4 matching part worn tyres though. They use haldex 4 wheel drive on these and that relies on matching tyres to work properly
Air filter / oil / oil filter / cabin filter / fuel filter / battery / spark plugs / tyres / transmission service are consumables so you can't add those to your costs. You'd pay that on any car.
Hi Matt, speak to Mike Brewer, he knows someone who can refurbish your old worn-out buttons in the UK, he uses a laser, I saw it on a wheeler-dealer episode.😊
Light switches cost half nothing from VW. Wheeler Dealer did an episode on a Maserati during which Brewer found a company to fix the buttons like those you pointed to. Thanks for the video.
That's my evening taken up looking at cars I don't need, thanks Matt! 🙄
Light switch is about 15 quid from china, you can also get new window switches for a few quid. When it comes to the centre console buttons, you either buy a set of vynil wrap stickers for them or get the buttons replaced. Either of these options would massively improve that interior 👌

I had the same engine in a 55 reg Cayenne I owned for 7 years. Best car I ever had
You did the right thing by keeping it,looks Really Nice Now👍
Hi Matt, perhaps add a page to your website showing your collection of collectables, specs and photos. Would be like a virtual tour and enable viewers to Ooh and Arr over them without having to take them out on the road. Maybe a link to the videos you've done on each one.
The Japanese got the foot park brake sorted. Press down to engage, press again to release. Its actually quick and easy to operate.
The way you describe the car while driving and then finally talking about keeping it out of the weather, reminded me of GTA days, where you stral cars from NPC's who drive them very slow, and when u floor it, they fly and you decide to keep it 😂
It's a great car and worth every penny. You need to do things that make you happy; life is too short. Have a great week, Matt.
'Cheap Touareg' sounds like 'vergan stew'. But she looks fine indeed, Matt!
You’ve got the little knob to fold and turn mirrors in the centre console, rare as hens teeth!!
The hand brake sounds like the one I had in a Merc C-Class. Quite easy to get used to.
High Peak Autos spends massive everywhere he goes, everywhere he goes!!!
Nice job.
How did you get on with your ‘bad debt’ issue? Hope you got it resolved.
JJ on Cars recently repaired the interior buttons with a kit he bought. Look for his A2 video.
It looks like one of those new Porsches from some angles. Very desirable, even when it says '53' on the new reg-plates it's crying out for.
"Massively overspent" = Replaced consumables + minor paintwork, normal for a 20+ year old car.
I'd call that spending the absolute bare minimum to keep a car roadworthy (other than centre caps & paint).
Maybe change the front diff/rear diff oils, and transfer box oil. I've just changed mine, and noticed a better improvement.
Matt Massively overspent - who would have thought? - It looks like money well spent.
It looks really well. Good choice to keep it!
Air filter / oil / oil filter / cabin filter / fuel filter / battery / spark plugs / tyres / transmission service are consumables so you can't add those to your costs. You'd pay that on any car.
It did look good when you bought it, but yeah.. It's looking sharp now. Good work Matt.
Make someone happy by selling it!
Its a lot of car for that money❤
Hi Matt, speak to Mike
Brewer, he knows someone who can refurbish your old worn-out buttons in the UK, he uses a laser, I saw it on a wheeler-dealer episode.😊
Excellent job, well done
Sticky plastics in Gillingham would be able to do your buttons. I think they were on an episode of wheeler dealers once over.
That's the guy I was scratching my head over... He did that Maserati sticky dash buttons really well
@@Telecaster4959 hi should say Billingham not Gillingham hope it helps. Cheers
bought for £400 sold for £3579 - dream business 😂
Had a Touran of the same age and the interior around the switches also let down . The blue and red interior lighting was lovely though
Among the many, many problems Mk1 Touaregs have, the front diffs fail and make the dry bearing grumbling noise you described
Looks great Matt, enjoyed the vid as usual 👍
You didn't replace the number plates with a pair of yours, either, so that must have saved you an absolute fortune!
And yes this why I own a Porsche Cayenne Turbo, based off this platform.
I went for lunch near your garage the other day and saw this parked up in the car park behind, instantly said to myself this was one of yours 😂
Will be great for driving in this snow ❄️ Keep those heated seats on Matt... don't want you getting another cold. Touareg looks lovely.
Light switches cost half nothing from VW. Wheeler Dealer did an episode on a Maserati during which Brewer found a company to fix the buttons like those you pointed to. Thanks for the video.
