Well the top o the town platform being 1.012 unit too small was more so for VSC which at the time was just barely off from working (until Pannen found some optimizations for it). I love how you do all your own piano music, and that the renditions are so faithful! Question, do you record them in one take, or are the parts cut together?
It largely depends. The file select, SMB1 theme and Mario Medley were one-take recordings, but some of the more complex stuff like Bob-omb Battlefield, the SMRPG music, or Yoshi Valley in MK64, are layered recordings, i.e. I record the bassline/accompaniment first, then I play that back and record the melody on top of it. But it's always one take in the sense that I always record a part of it in one go, I don't cut it in multiple segments.

This was another flawless video … raising the “bismuth standard” bar even higher … I was actually sad when the video ended … not just because the piano rendition of the sm64 credits theme hits the nostalgia just right 😌 … but because “no mo video 🥺” … but I gotta remind myself … “no mo FOR NOW” 🤩
The reason i love this a button challenge is because it shows how people can finds way to do anything they want, it just takes time, and if something is actually impossible they accept it until someone finds a way to do the impossible.
Everyone saying impressive stuff to the people in the video but I don't see many appreciating the huge work bismuth is putting in his video, so much time and love :D
obviously all the stuff in this part was way more epic in reality than it is presented in this extremely condensed documentary show, but it was still very touching to get reminded of that timespan of history again. at some point i honestly shed some tears during the video as it let me live through this crucial episode in my life again in which the unmatched creativity, effort and unity of the ABC family was the only shining beacon in my crumbling dark world of hopelessness and realizing the wonder of existing just in the perfect time and space to be somewhat part of this monument of gaming history did literally save my life back then... i had actually nothing else to grab onto, but thanks to those people that i didn't even really know, i was able to hang on and regain some hope again. thank you all SM64 and ABC crew, your work was way more significant than this video made it look like! (and sorry for the long text, i just got a bit emotional from watching this great video)
I think the absolute absurdity of PUs steals a lot of the thunder from all the other wonders unearthed by the ABC, because there are several things in here I'd never heard of that are amazingly entertaining. Thank you for documenting this story so well.
Ironically I feel that same way about a glitch I found in Origami King. Fishing storage, while wonderfully broken and allowing for interactions and tricks that shouldn’t be remotely possible, is so absurd that it tends to detract attention from all the other cool glitches that are being found in the game. Don’t get me wrong, it’s an awesome glitch, but I do think some people in the discord forget the other cool things we can do. Pretty similar to PUs in relation to the ABC wouldn’t you say? In fact I’d say that’s leads to something that I really admire about Pannenkoek, his ingenuity with so many tools and ideas, while not getting tunnel visioned by certain strats and instead considering most ideas collectively, is very admirable.
Wait, so… if the Chuckya was dropped for the beginning platforms of BitS, the red coin that was collected by carrying Chuckya from its original spawn wouldn’t be possible now right? Was there another way discovered to get that red coin?
Good question! The additional notes answer that. Note 7: The entire level was eventually pieced together by Pannenkoek in January 2015. Note that because the stage is reset by dying at Bowser, Chuckya can indeed be used in two different places without causing a conflict.
@@Bismuth9 oh yeah completely forgot you can just reset the entire level by dying to Bowser. You mentioned that in the last video as well and it just went over my head. Thanks for the answer and great video 👍
Thanks for another amazing masterpiece ! Love the piano. I’m also impressed of how complex it is to build a game. Units, speed on both axes, etc. We casual players don’t see anything of this, but these are the foundations of the game.
This journey is so amazing. The amount of research done holy... I appreciate this so much bismuth. Now patience for part 5 and your amazing research and editing
This is a fantastic overview, thank you :) I've followed the progress of the ABC since a long time, but I've only ever seen glimpses and completed/theory videos of it, often not entirely understanding what was going on. This is really fascinating - both a trip down memory lane, as well as an explanation of the finer details I didn't realize
The Tiny Huge Island section has made me irrationally angry for absolutely no reason. Also that is one heck of a cliffhanger, I think I know what's coming next.
Ive never been so excited for a 50 min UA-cam video and that’s no joke. You’ve pulled me into the world of speed running good sir and now I must see where this ends!!!
In all honesty, most of this makes absolutely no sense to me and I half-tune it out. With that said: Your voice is very pleasant, your running jokes are subtle yet effective, your music is both well-performed and well-mixed.... In other words, having this series play in my ear brings me very happiness; the immense amount of work you've put into this is greatly appreciated for so many many reasons. ❤️✌️🍍
The in-game camera shots to show off subtle things, like the distance between two elements that you need to work together to save an A press, or zooming in to show a teeny little slope that makes a certain trick possible, is very much appreciated. It gives a satisfying, almost cinematic flair to what's being said while intuitively communicating what's going on with something more than a PowerPoint presentation. Kudos for that!
I missed the release of this one, very happy I found it, I was expecting PUs because I thought that's what was hinted last time but I had no idea that even without them there was so much more this genius had to offer

What a fantastic video to continue a fantastic series! It really helps bring the history into perspective and makes me wish I'd been following things back then. It's almost like learning about scientists making breakthroughs in physics or chemistry.
I have been watching since part 1 and I have a strong suspicion i will lose an entire afternoon rewatching this whole thing when it is complete. Amazing work!
The Staff Roll will never not make me feel like sobbing like a baby. You use cheap tricks at the end to make me feel emotional, when the video itself does all the heavy lifting. I see right through your charade.
This video really ilustrates the importance of science and math's challenges, puzzles and contests, as well as the"standing on the soulder of giants" principle. You never know where the next idea will come from (Tyler's other challenge lead to a discovery that helped ABC challenge). Seemingly useless challenges can lead to great discoveries throughout the years.
Part 3 ended stating that we would discuss the person who discovered parallel universes but we STILL didn't talk about parallel universes, this is some Netflix-series level of getting you hooked for the next episode :O (This comment was edited because it originally seemed like I claimed we never talked about the person who discovered PUs, which the video actually did, sorry, it was ambiguous)
He did discuss the person that discovered parallel universes, it's just that this person had so much to discuss BEFORE parallel universes that there's a whole episode dedicated to it
Its been nearly a year now since the first video in this series was published, and as much as I was hoping for this chapter to wrap up this dramatic saga, I am absolutely dumbfounded by the prospect that, after everything I just saw, this challenge can be pushed even further.

I’m sure releasing what he believes to be his magnum opus and it getting memed right after going through that didn’t help at the time, and if I could find what he wrote I’d love to quote him instead of trying to remember, but I’m pretty sure he eventually realized the memes weren’t mean spirited and isn’t the reason he no longer creates commented videos.
Been waiting since the release of the last one for this. Can’t wait to watch
This was another flawless video … raising the “bismuth standard” bar even higher … I was actually sad when the video ended … not just because the piano rendition of the sm64 credits theme hits the nostalgia just right 😌 … but because “no mo video 🥺” … but I gotta remind myself … “no mo FOR NOW” 🤩
I do not know why but 12:16 where mario just starts sliding around made me laugh a lot.
"The negative A press" at this point these dudes are so legendary that I had started to believe haha.
Binge watched the last three videos. Never been more exited to go back to uni

This journey is so amazing. The amount of research done holy...
I appreciate this so much bismuth. Now patience for part 5 and your amazing research and editing
This is a fantastic overview, thank you :)
I've followed the progress of the ABC since a long time, but I've only ever seen glimpses and completed/theory videos of it, often not entirely understanding what was going on. This is really fascinating - both a trip down memory lane, as well as an explanation of the finer details I didn't realize
What the actual fuck I haven't even finished the video yet but this Chuckya thing is blowing my mind. Pure genius what the fuck
The Tiny Huge Island section has made me irrationally angry for absolutely no reason.
Also that is one heck of a cliffhanger, I think I know what's coming next.
What angered you about it?
I am convinced that these people are simply wizards at this point
I'm a simple man. I see a new Bismuth video, I cancel all plans for the evening and put whatever I was doing on hold and click the link.
I am absolutely mind blown. I dont have words to describe what I just watched. Looking forward to part 5, any eta GOAT Bismuth?
Bismuth, your comprehensiveness is unmatched. Thank you sir.
Jesus, man. Thank you so much for this awesome content. The sheer amount of research and work behind this is no short of amazing. Also, of course, thanks to those incredible tas’ers.
What a fantastic video to continue a fantastic series! It really helps bring the history into perspective and makes me wish I'd been following things back then. It's almost like learning about scientists making breakthroughs in physics or chemistry.
This still continues to be one of the greatest series on UA-cam. The way you present everything is so incredibly thorough, without being overwhelming.
Speedrunner Mario: "I HAVE DISCOVERED INFINITE SPEED WITHOUT THE USE OF AN 'A' BUTTON."
He’s truly 4 parallel universes ahead of us.
NOOO! HOW CAN HE BE FASTER THAN HALF AN A PRESS???

I have been watching since part 1 and I have a strong suspicion i will lose an entire afternoon rewatching this whole thing when it is complete. Amazing work!
YES FINALLY! I've checked weekly for this upload! Can't wait for more
The Staff Roll will never not make me feel like sobbing like a baby. You use cheap tricks at the end to make me feel emotional, when the video itself does all the heavy lifting. I see right through your charade.
Memes aside I love this series and can't wait for the DK64 ABC sequel 😎
Lol I love hat hair mario @40:02, did not expect an N64 game to have that level of realism :)
i'm so excited for the reveal that spawning displacement CAN be used on more than one star... the Sexy Kick(tm) is one of my favorite ABC stars
Loving this series so far, I'm going to watch it from start to finish when is finally done, doesn't matter if it takes like 4 hours
This was honestly a crazy video, and I can't wait for part 5! My guess that is involved in part 5 is PUs.
Edit: omg thank you for 57 likes
Probably with shells(?)
Part 5: Into the Multiverse!
Part 3 ended stating that we would discuss the person who discovered parallel universes but we STILL didn't talk about parallel universes, this is some Netflix-series level of getting you hooked for the next episode :O
(This comment was edited because it originally seemed like I claimed we never talked about the person who discovered PUs, which the video actually did, sorry, it was ambiguous)
He did discuss the person that discovered parallel universes, it's just that this person had so much to discuss BEFORE parallel universes that there's a whole episode dedicated to it
Trust me, the PU episode is gonna be good.
Its been nearly a year now since the first video in this series was published, and as much as I was hoping for this chapter to wrap up this dramatic saga, I am absolutely dumbfounded by the prospect that, after everything I just saw, this challenge can be pushed even further.
damn! waited so long for this! :D must have watched part 1-3 like 10 times already. such an incredible series! now i can't wait for part 5 again..
we haven't even touched on pu's (pannenkoeks limbo world aside) yet and there are so many goodies yet to come. watch for rolling rocks, entering the secret aquarium with zero a presses etc. :)
I have no idea how people make these fantastic visual aids and representations, but they are so helpful.
Yeah after seeing the video I see why it took an extra month longer than you said it would. Its absolutely jam packed with an *incredible* amount of detail.
These explanations are just beautiful. I understood most of Pannen's videos but this series shows me that I didn't _fully_ understand them. Top notch presentation.
That watch for rolling rocks cliffhanger 👌
After watching it, went back and rewatched everything, then watched it again
Brilliantly written, produced, and presented. You're doing a wonderful thing, all of you.
You can tell it's the perfect video when it has no dislikes.
Dislikes are disabled on youtube
For the record it does already have a dislike. 684 / 1
@@extremechimpout The dislike button is actually still functional, you just can't see the counter unless you're the video's creator.
Officially, it's so that people only dislike things if they actually dislike them (rather than jumping on a bandwagon), but it's probably actually because they're still salty that everyone disliked the crappy Rewind they made in 2018
@@EnigmaticLucas It is to protect large corporations from bad press if they have one of their videos (promoting their product) massively disliked.

The real kicker? Creators can disable comments if they wish.
Dislikes are force-disabled so that corporations aren't called out for disabling.
You're videos are incredible. Thank you for doing the entire ABC community service and giving it spotlight.
as someone who lived through this and was following pannencoek from the very beginning of it all, I have loved every moment of this series. I'm already eagerly awaiting the next one!
I like how you described the Chukya manipulation as a complex mating dance.
amazing video just like the other 3 parts, i looking forward to part 5. Its very interesting how tyler kehne made such an impact and cut the a press count almost in half from 82 to 43. With these 3 discoveries. (Also with the help of abc crew)
This is the most interesting episode yet! Hope this series gets finished -- love your videos man
Omg, I love how it's gotten to a point where everyone knows what up next die to the memes, but your execution and documentation of everything sends shivers down my spine. Just the mention of infinite speed is enough to release what comes next
the Super Mario RPG piano covers always make me smile, it's great to hear music from that forgotten gem again!
Man big props to you bismuth. This is my favourite series on UA-cam. I don't even know why but when the new discoveries are made I feel nostalgic joy. I've never even been part of any kind of glitche hunting but it's just so insanely genius the things they come up with. And your way to show how it all works in a entertaining way is just spectacular. Thank you
It's unbelievable how good you became at crafting masterpiece. It shows through your storytelling the love and respect you have for the history of the A button challenge. I'm speechless at how great and captivating you are at explaining complexe video games mechanics. I'll be there at the part 5 release! Great job Bismuth
Just discovered your channel, incredible job on this series
Amazing as always. As I said I would love to see the goomba staircase and it most likely will be covered but obviously the ultimate hype of Part 5 will be Watch for Rolling Rocks itself. I guess.
this is by far my most anticipated series on youtube! thank you for making these incredible documentaries!
Thank you for all your hard work and effort you put into creating high-quality videos 🖤 they are ALWAYS worth the wait
The piano music and writing brings this series videos to Ken Burns-level documentary
This series is a masterpiece, the research, the explanations, the narration, the music... Everything perfectly combined, thank you for all you're doing :)
Man, I gotta say the amount of work you put into this is amazing! I make pretty lengthy and heavily edited videos too so I understand how long these take to make, but the amount of editing and visual examples you provide are far beyond anything I would ever attempt (I go fucking crazy staying up making my videos sometimes lmao). It's much appreciated, this series was very interesting man, keep of the good work!
Thanks! And yes, it is a lot of work. This video probably took close to 300 hours in total.
@@Bismuth9 I believe it man, keep up the hard work!
Can I say that I adore the "they took a break. {absurdly short time period} later, they..."
Or "It's been an {absurdly short time period} since breakthroughs, so time for a breakthrough" or similar such "short time span discussed like it was a long break" things being a running gag in this series?
It's so good 😆
Not to downplay the extraordinary feats achieved by the players, or your work researching, writing, and editing all of this together; but I really appreciate that, not only do you perform your own piano arrangements, you also choose songs from a variety of Mario games, not just 64. Fantastic series :)
You can't tell me we don't live in a simulation after how many of these stars are just BARELY attainable because of the most important possible utilities in that area to assist in getting there. It's insane time and time again how they find a way to just barely do what appears to be impossible.
The effort put into this and the quality of everything here astounds me! This is simply incredible! Sharing this series with my technical friends in hope it can reach the views it deserves. Thank you Bismuth
There's a bunch of incredible parts of this piranha plant thing might be my favorite. That's incredible.
I've been watching this video every night to fall asleep for a couples months now, best of the series so far, can't wait for the next episode!
This series has been a great review of everything. Even though I saw all of it before, it being iver the course of 6 years has certainly numbed me to how crazy some of it is, plus just memory. Awesome series, love how you did camera work in them, no idea how you did it!
