Notes (timestamps are this way so chapters aren't broken):
At 8;05, I imply that Worlds 5 and 6 take you to World 8, which is false. They take you to the second row, which means you can go to World 6 and warp backwards to World 5. In the Japanese version, a fourth warp whistle is available to collect in 5-1, which means you can theoretically play the game forever.
At 24;18, I mention that Mario's subpixel position cannot be set to any specific value other than at the very start of the run. This is not entirely accurate. It is possible to set up a subpixel value, but the latest point it could be set at is the previous Boom Boom fight, which wouldn't help for the wall jump. However, it is used in other categories to set up a wall clip in the first room of Bowser's Castle for the 5-second slower route.

Hi, Kosmic!
Absolutely. The overlays showing the differences in even small things like the 1-2 strat, along with demonstrations of the best / TAS and worst possible cases alongside the actual run really helped visualize what was going on.
Oh hi
@@Bismuth9 I just came to the comments to brag on your editing!
I had that long Bowser fall once when I was little and nearly turned off the game thinking it glitched just before the end. Thank you for solving a decades old mystery for me!
I was thinking the exact same thing.
I didn't even know about that Bowser death. You must have been upset; you beat the game, only for the devs to snatch victory from your grasp.

Cause he is a big streamer en nothing is realy hard only rng en wall jump/clip
Of course he's not a pick up line guy. He doesn't need them. He just informs the ladies he has the Mario 3, 100%, no wrong warp, world record and its in the bag from there...
100%, any% warpless and any% no wrong warp wr's actually, just an any% wr away from a full sweep of the super mario bros. 3 leaderboard

you should look at the new oot 100% route, that shit is probably the most insane speedrun route i've seen and feel like it'd make for a great explained video
He's going to need at least three hours to explain SRM for getting items and SRM for glitching FW
@@joeschmoe5063 it would take that long lmao, but it would still be a amazing video to watch
@@joeschmoe5063 More like 5-6 hours. The game is broken into a million pieces when doing a 100% speedrun. The amount of time it would take to explain every little trick would far surpass the amount of time it takes to actually finish the fun. I mean this Mario 3 run took only ~10:40 seconds and this video is over half an hour long.
Holy shit the Mario ghosts for comparison are a really nice touch
This trick is TAS only
Runners after 2 years: its a common thing now
I got recommended one (1) video from this channel and here I am binging it all. I love the humour of the narration and how detailed and easy to understand it is. I've seen many speed runs and TASes but admittedly not understood much. Seeing the inner workings and getting every Zelda enemy explained is just *chef's kiss*
You are extremely proficient at giving in-depth but easy-to-understand explanations about the mechanics of the game and how they are used during a speedrun. I love this kind of content and wish to see a lot more of it from you, Bismuth.

Speaking of pickup lines, the funniest one I ever heard was when my friend told a girl way out of his league that if she was a booger he would pick her. I'll never forget the look of disgust on her face as she turned her back on him. I died.
The thing about speed running is that every “unbreakable barrier” eventually gets broken, either better gameplay or new strategies.
I fully believe in the next 2-3 years speed runners will be approaching 10:39
Excluding category, sure. Some categories certainly hit hard walls though due to not allowing certain tricks and glitches. OoT is a great example thereof.
The closest TAS category to this does it in 10:24.340, but it almost certainly involves some time saves that are beyond the human limit. But clearly not all of them are. I think that there will be a barrier hit eventually, unless new techniques are found, but there's definitely room to beat this one.
Eventually sure, but 2-3 years is way too soon. This record was set almost two years ago already and nobody has made a serious attempt to beat it since. And getting to 10:39 will take several new records, each one bringing it down by a small amount. I'd say 10:39 is at least 5 years away at a minimum.

as much as I enjoy summoning salt's speed run explanation videos, this is a delightfully different niche.
your explanation of the tricks is superior, and i love how much deeper you can get into a single run than he can on an entire history.
I love that you play the clip as normal before going into the semantics- it's a small detail, but it makes the information so much easier to process! Thanks for another high quality upload my guy ✌
It's actually quite ridiculous how optimized this category is considering the sheer quantity of RNG bullshitery.
I think Hammer Brother movement is going to become a HUGE deal in the future. As runners get better and better and that next break point is jjuuuussttt around the corner, I can see a world where if you don't get double one title Hammer Brother the run is just reset. Kind of like how only like 20% of Kosmic's runs get past 1-1

Hi, HappyLee!
Just want to mention that Mitch is a god. Currently has the 100%, Any% (Warpless), and Any% (No Wrong Warp) World Records. Absolutely dominating.
Pretty interesting. I don't understand how any human can play like this without making a mistake every once in awhile. But thanks for explaining things. I didn't know much how the Hammer Bros patterns worked, but I do now! LOL
Always remember that behind each world record are thousands upon thousands of failed attempts.
Great video! Also, just so you know, 22:43 in smb1 you don’t need to land on the exact pixel. There’s a 5 pixel window. If you land right on the top pixel of the block, then you can Wall jump, or if you collide with the wall up to 4 more pixels lower, the game will snap you up to the top of the block and you can still WJ. So 5 Y pixels in total.
This is an older video, so he didn't know that back then. He mentioned this in his 4:54 video: www .youtube .com/watch?v=U7RzoIEoSMY :)
Thats why wall jumps where so ez i thought mm1 wal jumps where harder cause off the speed you need

Bismuth's videos always have such fine quality. He also explains things incredibly well so that even a new speedrunner would understand. Keep it up bismuth!😀
Excellent explanations and visualizations. The wall jump section alone was top notch! So many videos mention sub pixels but none so far have done that good of a job of actually showing the lay viewer how they impact tight jumps like that. Bravo!
The single best speedrun breakdown I have ever seen. Great job! It really shows all of the angles, I love the shadow marios showing the outcomes of different strats, and the explanation of the odds and mechanics were all really clear. Congrats to the runner and also to the videographer!
It just amazes me how you guys manage to pick this stuff apart. Great run!
I can't explain how good these videos explain things! I have watched this over and over again! :)
I absolutely love explanations of speedruns as watching them casually you have no idea what kind of glitch is being used and why
The entire time he's interacting with chat and wisecracking...what a legend!
And Bismuth gave master-level commentary that was exciting and added to the tension of the challenge. A+++ work!
I would absolutely love to see a speedrun breakdown of the warpless category. If ever there was a category defined by the capriciousness of random numbers and losing time to General BS, it is the warpless category.
I'm just here for the dating advice
I don't know what's more impressive, the actual speedrun or the level of detail and graphics you use to explain it.
11:27
The silence here, just for a moment, had me thinking Bismuth was about to go in to a tangent about how pickup lines and their effectiveness.
"Here Mitch goes for the 'Did you fall from heaven?' line. This is a risky move, but compared to 'Do you come here often?' it has the potential to get the girl's number 0.7 seconds faster if he times it perfectly."
You sound so friendly and have such a high production quality.
Extremely well-edited and explained. Sub for you, sir.
After watching your video about your process for making these videos, there’s an extra level of appreciation for the care and detail you put in to these. Nice work my dude, this was a treat to watch.
This breakdown is insane! You should make documentaries, your attention to detail and explanation is very well done.
And then there's me, unable to finish the game as a kid. What a nice run.
I don’t think I ever was able to beat more than 2 games on the NES
Such a thorough and meticulously presented video. I don't watch many speedruns (just doing research for my latest Mario video) but this hooked me! - Bitplex :)
thanks for this! i have seen most of these tricks seen explained at some point, but its so nice to see it all together in one well commentated video :)
Been watching Mitch’s runs for years and still learned a ton of new tech from watching this, thanks for the content Bismuth!!
This was one of the best things I've seen on UA-cam in a long time. I'm glad I found this channel. Thanks!
Current WR (by Mitch of course) is almost three seconds faster. 10_41_68
If anyone is interested the main time saves were new route in World 1 (obtaining mushroom and leaf ealier) and better luck with the angry sun in the end.
so you can use a whistle to get on the warp pipe screen, and on that screen
you can use another whistle to get to world 8. omg, i wonder how many
people found that out randomly back in the days :D
The only thing that impresses me as much as how detailed these speedruns can be, is how well Bismuth explains why the speedrunners do what they do.

Why do speed runners pick a game that has such heavy rng? Being on world record pace only to get screwed by the hand seems super frustrating.
But it's more rewarding and satisfying when you finally get something good! =D

You'd have to be an absolute masochist to run a Pokémon game.
This run involved extremely little RNG. It just seems like it because the run is so incredibly optimized. At some point, almost every game gets optimized to the point where even a few frames of RNG-based time loss become unacceptable.
Hah, I never knew about the Long Bowser Fall. That's amazing
And I thought I was awesome for doing this in something like 14 minutes a few years ago... didn't pull off any of the cool clipping tricks, I did swim under the boat auto scroll level though, lol.
