Excellent explanations and visualizations. The wall jump section alone was top notch! So many videos mention sub pixels but none so far have done that good of a job of actually showing the lay viewer how they impact tight jumps like that. Bravo!
Great video! Also, just so you know, 22:43 in smb1 you don’t need to land on the exact pixel. There’s a 5 pixel window. If you land right on the top pixel of the block, then you can Wall jump, or if you collide with the wall up to 4 more pixels lower, the game will snap you up to the top of the block and you can still WJ. So 5 Y pixels in total.
The single best speedrun breakdown I have ever seen. Great job! It really shows all of the angles, I love the shadow marios showing the outcomes of different strats, and the explanation of the odds and mechanics were all really clear. Congrats to the runner and also to the videographer!
The thing about speed running is that every “unbreakable barrier” eventually gets broken, either better gameplay or new strategies. I fully believe in the next 2-3 years speed runners will be approaching 10:39
Excluding category, sure. Some categories certainly hit hard walls though due to not allowing certain tricks and glitches. OoT is a great example thereof.
The closest TAS category to this does it in 10:24.340, but it almost certainly involves some time saves that are beyond the human limit. But clearly not all of them are. I think that there will be a barrier hit eventually, unless new techniques are found, but there's definitely room to beat this one.
Eventually sure, but 2-3 years is way too soon. This record was set almost two years ago already and nobody has made a serious attempt to beat it since. And getting to 10:39 will take several new records, each one bringing it down by a small amount. I'd say 10:39 is at least 5 years away at a minimum.
