You did one big mistake . All that grease is going to find its way to the clutch plate facings and the fine dust produced during use is going to stick to the grease and results in a sticky messy lump. Only graphite powder should be used on the splines of the shaft of the gearbox.Apart from this , it is a very good video.

great job, one of the best clutch how to vids on youtube. Excellent demo even going the extra mile to bolt the clutch and pressure plate to the flywheel on the table for better view of whats going on, nice touch.

Great video, lots of generic advice for people with different cars. Good camera work, and I like the example of how to tighten the bolts with the clutch on the bench. Looking at the number of people who have viewed this video, I'd like to think you have saved them a *lot* of money. Thank you.
It is really a hard work to do by yourself, what about being sure to have the flywheel ground or replaced, or changing out the input shaft bearing? Right now I am working with manyautosltd.com they can help with all kind of new clutch, clutch diagnostic, clutch repair reading, clutch replacement, clutch pedal, clutch master cylinder Etc.
I am using Part Number KF605-02 I purchased from O'Reilly's Auto Parts in Santa Rosa California. It is for a 1989 Mercury Tracer, 1.6L non-turbo. The original clutch that I removed had 6 springs on the clutch the new one has only 4. The original pressure place I removed has many little "fingers" on the diaphragm spring, the new one has less. When comparing the two clutch assemblies side by side they appear to have the same dimensions - Throw out bearing, clutch disc, and pressure plate. But when I mount the pressure plate and torque the bolts to 20 ft. Lbs the CENTER of the Diaphragm Spring gets sucked in totally flat towards the engine away from the throw out bearing, it does not protrude outwards towards the trow out bearing at all! It is not a hydraulic clutch. When I mount the bell to the engine and connect the clutch cable properly I do not have any tension at all on the clutch pedal. It feels exactly like when it is not hooked up at all. It goes straight to the floor with very little resistance and sticks there until I use my hand to pull back it up. I did that 3 separate times wit the same result. When I mount the old pressure plate and tighten it down, the many diaphragm springs do not go flat, they still protrude towards the throw out bearing. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE NEW CLUTCH ASSEMBLY #KF605-02 ?? After the person at O'Reilly's looked online at other part stores and crossed referenced then they said there is actually tow parts numbers for a 1989 Mercury Tracer 1.6L non-turbo. There are a KF605-02 and a KF605-01. He said they sell mostly the KF605-02. Is one a diaphragm type on the other a coil spring type pressure plate? Hopefully I will not have to go with a different brand.
Hello from Canada, MMMM When I get an issue like yours I find that if I go to a local Ford dealership and ask very nicely for advice from the service manager. That person is usually a very experienced senior mechanic and may well have dealt with your issue many times. I suspect that you will get good , expert, advice free of charge in hopes that you buy the correct part from their parts department allan
YOU NEED TO PUT YOU CLUTCH DISC IN THE RIGHT WAY AT THE MOMENT THE FACE OF THE DISC IS FACING THE WRONG WAY AROUND. TAKE IT OFF AND TURN IT AROUND ! HOPE THIS WILL HELP YOU ....
Hi, I was wanted to replace my clutch but it costs an arm and a leg to take it to a mechanic. After seeing this video I can't tell u how much help I have got. Good job bro, I will b changing my Mazda 3 sp23 soon, once again, thanks heaps...
Hi, Thanks to you for this,i'm happy it's helping somebody. I sugest you to buy a service manual to have torque values etc.. you will can do that like a pro,or even better. How much km/miles your clutch have seen till now ?
michaelovitch Hi there, sorry I saw your message late but guess what? I changed the clutch two days ago, all by myself but I suggest to anyone to really try it if they knw what they r doing, I didn't want to hurry so it took me about 15hrs. The car drives like new now, it has abt 225,000 kms so it was time to change because it started slipping. I jst need to figure out abt th gears. It's a manual the 1,3,5 are working fine but it's hard to shift to 2,4 & reverse. I think the other cable is jammed or broaken. Any help? Will appreciate
riera222 Congratulations : ) Looks like the problem yes. one cable to push gears 1,3,5,the other to pull gears2,4,R. i guess you have the rear gear down right on the shifter? take a look at the cable and where it's attached.on the shifter and the gear box. you may have not placed it correctly or something is bent a bit. it happens sometimes when you move the gearbox in the engine bay, there are so much stuff and so little room...
michaelovitch Yes I did try by shaking the cables a bit and it worked. You are right, there is a very small room nd heaps of things to squeeze into it. I'm so happy how much money I managed to save. I bought the clutch kit for $330 nd less than $90 for the oil to go in, turns it was really bad nd sticky. Bro I can't hold to myself he much you helped me, I like fixing things myself but this was a huge task, I'm jst 24yrs nursing student. All I need to do now is to adjust the clutch pedal and I think it should be under the steering column. Thanks again and again. Be blessed.
riera222 You did it alone, thanks yourself : ) I'm happy the vid helped you dang it's really expensive for a clutch kit,the oil is expensive too. what engine do you have ? i've looked, here it's around 150 max for a clutch kit on 1.6 or 2.0 liters engines.
this was by far one of the best how to clutch videos if not the best great job and thank you very much for taking the time to show us this was very helpfull and very much apreciated
Would have been much easier to have left the gearbox and drive shafts in situ and lifted out the engine, you may not even have had to remove the rad, Some of the repair manuals tell you that's the way to do it, only because they have nt tried it anyother way, And for the Guy with the Astra , engine up is far easier, "been there done it"
Kilhamjim It's an other technique,i'm sure it works good too. But on a recent car you have ten bililons sensors to unplug, and it would be quicker to just make room to remove the gearbox, specially when you have no axles going inside it,but just clipped to it. At the end, one of the two have to go outside the engine bay if there is not enough room : )
Letrool Haje Hi, it took a good big half a day while filming. Few hours without. It's a simple disc ,there is no pack like on a wet clutch on bikes : i can see you work on bikes : ) The car is a renault 21,a french 1989 car, quite popular over there, but it's a granny now.
you put way to much grease on input shaft and pilot bearing. ??? suppose to put little bit it's going to spread grease every where when engine runns will go into new clutch assembly.
very good video my friend. it shows what can be done with just basic hand tools and how to save your self a great deal of money by repairing your own car. many people nowadays scrap an old car because its £500 pounds to change a clutch. Thanks, Tony Uk
Thanks to you : ) I agree. My brother bought his car 450 euros few years ago because the clutch blew up after 180 000 kms. We pulled it changed the clutch for 80 euros and he still uses it everydays. the peoples didn 't want to spend several hundred in a shop for repairs.... They bought a new one lol. Greets from France, next to Lyon : )
Jorge Rodriguez i personally prefer working on front wheel drive. the gearbox can be supported with an engine crane during reinstallation and on rear wheel drive you kinda just have to summon all your strength (or a friend) and lift it.
That clutch was not worn down to the rivets. But it looked like it had been slipping on the pressure plate. On older Renaults you have to slacken the cable as the friction disc wears to maintain the free-play and allow it to be fully engaged.I suspect the problem was lack of free-play unless ,as happens, some bad driver had been riding the clutch pedal.
It's a self adjusting clutch mechanism here,so you can't adjust parts. You just can change the clutch or cable. It had 170 000 kms and was original ,from 1990,and started to be difficult to use.
Good job, I think it's a good idea to mention in the title it's a Renault 21 with F2N engine. I have a Twingo c3g 1995. Hope my clutch will last forever, it's been 290000 km.
I still have a Renault Twingo D7F engine, 1998 ~285K km. The clutch haven´t needed intervention, yet. But I do recognize the bearing is getting noisier by the day. By far the best "dirty cheap" car I´ve ever had. Lack a ton of modern features, but it´s extremely reliable and always deliver. I drive across Europe from time to time. About 7 countries, 3000 km to each side (6000 km total). Although the sound proofing, power, amenities, etc. as nothing to do with my other cars, particularly the Mercedes. The fact is you put gas and it takes you where you want to go, every time. ;-)
Kiitos tiedoista. Itselläni on vuoden 2008 transit connect ja rämisee aivan sairaasti. Vikaa on haettu mutta ei ole löytynyt. Tämän jutun kautta tiedän missä vika on ja huoltoa varataan kytkinremonttiin.
I watched this entire video and I don't even need to replace a clutch. Just because :D I seem to prefer guides where people don't talk and just show action. Most people talk a lot of garbage and just filler between the actual events. So thumbs up on this video
The suspension/wheel assembly goes up and down, while the gearbox do not move in the car. You need to have a shaft wich change its angle of work following the height of the suspension. those rollers bearings can move in the cup they sit in with some different angle while rotating.
@@michaelovitch thanks for the answer, it makes sense what you write, but on the other side it's just splines , there is something special with the drivers side that has these roller bearings. The other side does not
@@farerse The driver side is short and it's a single shaft with one end splined, and the other with a tripod bearing type. The passenger side is composed of two shafts, with a Continuous velocity end in the middle. and both ends splined. So the passenger side can have both ends splined and its angle can vary in the middle with the articulation. It's a way longer piece too.
Most excellent to see how to replace clutch plate and bearing on front wheel drive. What amount of time do you as an expert on average how many hours from start to finish?? I know if try myself to do will be much more but the video here has created much confidence to consider changing myself. Thank you greatly!!!!!!!!
Once you have done one,you don't think that's not hat difficult as it looks like. Just take your time, and let yourself an emergency exit,,just in case.
Valeo tend to supply a tiny sachet of grease in the clutch kit. No need for that great gob of grease and I suspect the box will have to come off again shortly.
Exclent, It is a very good video. It is a good idea the use of text instead of voice. This video with educational resources, easy understanding, stepped and summarized.
Thanks for the excellent video. My son's just bought a Toyota Caldina GT-T and it needs a new clutch release bearing. I doubt there's enough space to slide the gearbox away enough.
Thank you : ) Three possible ways : -the gearbox is pushed on the side, like here -the gearbox is removed by under: you may need to remove a part of the subframe, wich is normal, and often easy, because made for. -the gearox is removed by above, you have to think it's lifted by hand or ,way better,a device like a crane. The best is to check the shop manual to see how it's supposed to be done, but remember you can very often cheat, like me.
Thanks for a very good video. I used it several years ago to guide me with clutch replacement on a 2002 Saturn SL2. I just watched it again before I start another clutch replacement on My 1995 Saturn Sl2. I like the comment below about using graphite instead of grease, especially on the rotating assembly parts to avoid the prospect of grease working it's way onto the clutch mating surfaces.
Thank you. I'm happy to know it helped you to do it ,and not only at entertaining you. Manufacturers don't even want lube on the splines, depends of their policy,or engineering.
You are also best to remove the brake from its mount as well as to not damage the line is a rare thing to happen but still does happen so it's good practice to do so
I used to measure the clutch set position using finger from the side of the clutch cover,a blue tool in this video is quite acceptable as a good and useful measurement tool too!
Very cool and really video! I would also recommend replacing the rear engine seal and the front gearbox seal as they are quite inexpensive parts that would require the whole thing to be taken apart again if they went no?
i agreed that's too much grease...you should only put a little on the release bearing and fork and the input spline that's too much and i always wear clean gloves on a clutch job..bur nice video guys good job...
When I comes to replacing a clutch unless that pressure plate is close to new the fingers on it are gonna be worn out. It would always be a good idea to replace it. Nowadays they don't cost much either.
Wonderful work with patience and technique! One question, I have a 30 year old Opel astra F. When I move it with the first after the second etc at low RPM I hear a strange sound as if gears are rubbing. But when I turn up the speed and go third, fourth the sound is lost. What can happen, a bearing maybe?
Thank you, Maybe, To diagnose it a bit more in depth, you can check the oil level in the gearbox : maybe it's missing some oil. The more you roll faster ,the less the primary (or input )shaft in the gearbox is rotating faster : the reduction from the input to output shaft are less and less important, gears are longer and longer. 4th gear should be close to none reduction and th gear a demultiplied (output gear smaller than input gear) So i would say that you hear less and less noise because you have less and less rotation speed on the primary shaft. This relation between noise and speed make me think to a bearing, yes, but on the primary shaft,(input shaft, the one being connected directly to the engine via the clutch disc. It could be the trust bearing on the clutch, but only if it's always engaged a bit by lack of slack in the clutch cable adjustement (it's less likely the case, but could be)
Sir, thanks for the video. But it is highly advised that you do not use so much grease where you applied it ESPECIALLY on the input shaft and throwout bearing! As they spin, they may throw out the excess grease between the flywheel, friction disk, and/or pressure plate, which will cause clutch slipping. Use very little, just a thin film. And the grease is advised to be high temperature tolerant. Regards.
Thank you. Yes,i should have filmed also that we removed the excess. There is quite a lot of peoples wich tell that regularly under the video. I should add this comment in the video : )
@@dougquaid Honest, For your information ,there are conversion kits produced by big auto parts companies allowing you to install a standard clutch, and eliminate the dual mass flywheel.
You did one big mistake . All that grease is going to find its way to the clutch plate facings and the fine dust produced during use is going to stick to the grease and results in a sticky messy lump. Only graphite powder should be used on the splines of the shaft of the gearbox.Apart from this , it is a very good video.

Hi,
Thanks to you for this,i'm happy it's helping somebody.
Any help? Will appreciate
riera222
Congratulations : )
Looks like the problem yes.
one cable to push gears 1,3,5,the other to pull gears2,4,R.
i guess you have the rear gear down right on the shifter?
take a look at the cable and where it's attached.on the shifter and the gear box.
you may have not placed it correctly or something is bent a bit.
it happens sometimes when you move the gearbox in the engine bay, there are so much stuff and so little room...
michaelovitch Yes I did try by shaking the cables a bit and it worked. Be blessed.
riera222
You did it alone,thanks yourself : )
I'm happy the vid helped you
dang it's really expensive for a clutch kit,the oil is expensive too.
what engine do you have ?
i've looked, here it's around 150 max for a clutch kit on 1.6 or 2.0 liters engines.
Thanks man, your a life saver
Thanks to you !
I hope it helped : )

great job my friend....
alright dude, was going to try to replace my own clutch, but after watching not even 10 minutes into the vide you've convinced me otherwise.
That was not my goal.
Can anyone recognize what bird is it in the background noise at 12:21 ?
Streptopelia decaocto
i don't know the name in English.
Pretty common coo coo here : )
It's a Tourterelle

I still don't know how it's called in english.
It's pretty good for a 20 years pause lol
Yes,it's this bird,thank you : )
We have two big trees with nests on it.
It's a wild pigeon (dove) it's mostly brown a little bit of black and a bit smaller goo.gl/images/EbFgqL
this was by far one of the best how to clutch videos if not the best great job and thank you very much for taking the time
to show us this was very helpfull and very much apreciated

Thank you very much : )
Would have been much easier to have left the gearbox and drive shafts in situ and lifted out the engine, you may not even have had to remove the rad, Some of the repair manuals tell you that's the way to do it, only because they have nt tried it anyother way,
And for the Guy with the Astra , engine up is far easier, "been there done it"
Kilhamjim
It's an other technique,i'm sure it works good too.
But on a recent car you have ten bililons sensors to unplug, and it would be quicker to just make room to remove the gearbox, specially when you have no axles going inside it,but just clipped to it.
At the end, one of the two have to go outside the engine bay if there is not enough room : )
Kilhamjim do not argue with Mr Michaelovitch he is boss and knowledge of cars is impeccable lol.
David Bana He made hard work of that job. no need to strip off the suspension struts.
michaelovitch hi how long did it take you to carry out this job of changing clutch packs, also what car was this ? thanks
Letrool Haje
Hi,
it took a good big half a day while filming.
Few hours without.
It's a simple disc ,there is no pack like on a wet clutch on bikes : i can see you work on bikes : )
The car is a renault 21,a french 1989 car, quite popular over there, but it's a granny now.
this is an awesome video, better than most instruction videos I've seen. félicitations d'Australie
Thank you, mate.
Compliment for video!!
Without grease in center, centripetal force and goes out into clutch! Other is great job! Great video!
slippery
you put way to much grease on input shaft and pilot bearing. ??? suppose to put little bit it's going to spread grease every where when engine runns will go into new clutch assembly.
You are right,we cleaned up the excess,my brother was too generous.

very good video my friend. it shows what can be done with just basic hand tools and how to save your self a great deal of money by repairing your own car. many people nowadays scrap an old car because its £500 pounds to change a clutch. Thanks, Tony Uk
Thanks to you : )
I agree.
My brother bought his car 450 euros few years ago because the clutch blew up after 180 000 kms.
We pulled it changed the clutch for 80 euros and he still uses it everydays.
the peoples didn 't want to spend several hundred in a shop for repairs....
They bought a new one lol.
Greets from France,next to Lyon : )
Omg so much to do for a clutch change...
its really not that bad if you have done one before.
Yes,it's painful but only once in a while (more or less 150 000 kilometers)
+michaelovitch
230k over here
Less city driving : )
The fact is you put gas and it takes you where you want to go, every time. ;-)
@@crpth1 where are you from? i think it's time for a clutch replacement, getting closer to 300k, clutch starts to slip.
Kiitos tiedoista. Itselläni on vuoden 2008 transit connect ja rämisee aivan sairaasti. Vikaa on haettu mutta ei ole löytynyt. Tämän jutun kautta tiedän missä vika on ja huoltoa varataan kytkinremonttiin.
@@michaelovitch merci beaucoup
I watched this entire video and I don't even need to replace a clutch. Just because :D
I seem to prefer guides where people don't talk and just show action. Most people talk a lot of garbage and just filler between the actual events. So thumbs up on this video
Thank you for your comment : )
i'm happy to read that : )
Thanks for this video, very helpful as I'm in the process of changing a front wheel drive clutch for the first time... Excellent !!!
Thank you : )
If you can,get yourself a new cranckshaft seal ,behind the flywheel : )
you are a professional guy doing that.
I'm average bob,not a pro : )
what's the purpose of those 3 roller bearings on the drive shaft?? why not just splines ?
@@michaelovitch brilliant! Now i just need to figure out how to pickup a dropped roller bearing inside the gearbox
@@farerse It's a needle bearing whole asembly or just a needle ?
Most excellent to see how to replace clutch plate and bearing on front wheel drive. What amount of time do you as an expert on average how many hours from start to finish??
I know if try myself to do will be much more but the video here has created much confidence to consider changing myself.
Thank you greatly!!!!!!!!
From two hours to half a big day, depends of the car,if you have to drop the subframe or not.
I would say four hours is an average.
As much as I can change oil, filters brake discs and pads, this video confirmed that I need to pay a professional to do this.
We removed the excess of grease just before reinstalling the gearbox.
Yes,it was in excess.
There was no grease provided in that kit.
Exclent, It is a very good video. It is a good idea the use of text instead of voice. This video with educational resources, easy understanding, stepped and summarized.
Fernando Angulo Thank you very much ! : )
Great job well done and thanks for the video. but which is the clutch torque to kia spectra tanks friend

For the pressure plate ?
It's quite low,a good hand tight is often enough.
best clutch video I've seen!
Thank you mucho !

Super labombastic fantastic skolastic ❤
Great job on the video. Detail by detail with good examples. I feel way better now, doing the job myself.
Thank you : )
You will save some serious money !
Great job, great comments too, we learning from you guys please keep posting
: )
Thank you !
You should thread a couple of bolts by hand just to keep the pressure plate in place to save you trying to hold it at the same time
Yes, i agree, and did that recently on an other clutch.
Thanks for the excellent video. My son's just bought a Toyota Caldina GT-T and it needs a new clutch release bearing. I doubt there's enough space to slide the gearbox away enough.
Thank you : )
Three possible ways :
-the gearbox is pushed on the side, like here
-the gearbox is removed by under: you may need to remove a part of the subframe, wich is normal, and often easy, because made for.
-the gearox is removed by above, you have to think it's lifted by hand or ,way better,a device like a crane.
The best is to check the shop manual to see how it's supposed to be done, but remember you can very often cheat, like me.
Excellent video Michael
Thank you very much ! : )
@ 15:40 Whats your preferred hand cleaner Go-Jo? Gloves highly recommended, grease is not good for skin.
You are also best to remove the brake from its mount as well as to not damage the line is a rare thing to happen but still does happen so it's good practice to do so
Yes,it's a good idea.
Nice Michael ..................I will soon do this on my V6 . Thanks so much for educational detail
Thank you : )
Have a nice smooth work !
Thank you for posting. Now I know why I can't do this myself....and why it costs so much for someone else to do.

It's quite a job,yes.
I used to measure the clutch set position using finger from the side of the clutch cover,a blue tool in this video is quite acceptable as a good and useful measurement tool too!
Yes,it was with the clutch kit : )
Very cool and really video! I would also recommend replacing the rear engine seal and the front gearbox seal as they are quite inexpensive parts that would require the whole thing to be taken apart again if they went no?

awesome video!! im learning how to do this atm and this is REALLY helpful, thanks

Thanks to you !
i agreed that's too much grease...you should only put a little on the release bearing and fork and the input spline that's too much and i always wear clean gloves on a clutch job..bur nice video guys good job...
Thank you : )
When I comes to replacing a clutch unless that pressure plate is close to new the fingers on it are gonna be worn out. It would always be a good idea to replace it. Nowadays they don't cost much either.
I completly agree.
great to know just how much work this is!

Thank you,
Maybe,
To diagnose it a bit more in depth, you can check the oil level in the gearbox : maybe it's missing some oil.
The more you roll faster ,the less the primary (or input )shaft in the gearbox is rotating faster : the reduction from the input to output shaft are less and less important, gears are longer and longer.
4th gear should be close to none reduction and th gear a demultiplied (output gear smaller than input gear)
So i would say that you hear less and less noise because you have less and less rotation speed on the primary shaft.
This relation between noise and speed make me think to a bearing, yes, but on the primary shaft,(input shaft, the one being connected directly to the engine via the clutch disc.
It could be the trust bearing on the clutch, but only if it's always engaged a bit by lack of slack in the clutch cable adjustement (it's less likely the case, but could be)
@@michaelovitch Helpful thanks a lot!
Nice job sir , but all that grease will end up on the new clutch , and possibly damage it. A little bit goes a long way in this instance..

@@dougquaid Honest,
For your information ,there are conversion kits produced by big auto parts companies allowing you to install a standard clutch, and eliminate the dual mass flywheel.
