- Really crappy live audio track with a lot of noise, and it's a little sketchy here and there, but damn.. This song, especially the chorus, is made for Maynard's voice. A studio version of this would be amaze!

I know he has had a long career, I'm in my 50s and have known of his various projects for decades.
What I meant was he not only sings amazingly but can sing truly beautifully as well, think songs like Parabola and 3 Libras and Potions.
I was just reminiscing back to when I first introduced my GF to tool/APC - her immediate reaction was, "he makes me think this is what the first angel would sound like, bc how gorgeous yet more than a little unsettling"😇😈 ahahaha.

@@sydknee604 There is indeed! I'm a big fan of them and A Perfect Circle, some of the Puscifer stuff is great too. The Puscifer song Potions he originally did with Trent Reznor on a project called Tapeworm that never got off the ground, personally I think the Tapeworm version is better and he sings almost angelically.
Maynard is one of the greatest Male lead singers of all time.
For the genre(s) he performs in most definitely. Mike Patton of Faith No More, Mr Bungle etc is another phenom with such a crazy range.
This is why Maynard is so great, sustaining those high notes in the chorus takes a different kind of voice than most people can do

I think most would agree Layne is irreplaceable. Maynard is probably one of the few singers on the planet though who could sing one of Layne's songs and not feel sorely lacking.

I feel like this works bc maynard is just singing like maynard and not trying to be Layne. I feel like William's downfall is trying to sound like Layne, which he never will. Maynard is just embracing how he sounds different but still unique
If you think William tries to sound like layne then you never actually listened to his singing. He's way better and more stable than layne, especially live. He never makes mistakes or sings off pitch or change the key to the songs, unlike layne. He always sang the way he did since he was in his band "mad fly" back in 90s or earlier and always sounded the way he did. Y'all are just retarded af and don't know shit about singing if you think layne is good.
William had little choice. He has to play those songs every night on tour, or fans won’t show up in the same volume that they do.

He still puts a lot of effort on collabs and APC's gigs. I had actually thought his voice was starting to decline due to age after watching current Tool concerts, but then I watched clips of him singing tunes from Eat the Elephant and I was impressed.
He sang A part of me recently and it sounded like the album from 1992. He still has vocal power. He just doesn't use it like he used to.
Well , he is actually trying to save his voice I'm sure. It's why there are no screams on the new album. That shit gets rough if you play 4 or 5 times a week.
Yeah he an still do it and if you’re lucky you’ll get an aggressive song or a wicked scream once every tour or two. He’s goin for longevity for sure.
Found this by accident, was aware of how hard this song is so cover, laynes vocal range is really unique. As soon as saw this collaboration I dunno why I didn't think of Maynard to begin with. This is incredible

He’s very talented/awesome!!
But you can Youtbe: “Layne Staley sings impossible notes”: where multiple videos, w/ different “singing-coaches” & conductors, are ASTONISHED!
One singer/conductor: Took one AIC song, and put the “vocal-recording”thru some, computer-program, that prints out the notes, on paper. Like a sheet of music..(the notes are printed out on music scales)..This man, then points out, a certain part Layne sings & says how “MIND BLOWN” he is, going on to explain: “This note, here.. I’m not even sure what to call it; Bc it’s so far off the chart; it’s like a “new-note”,. It doesn’t fit anywhere on the scale. Before, NOW…it’s not been “possible”, or at least, never “discovered” and recorded. (Not for “human-vocal cords”)…I really wish I could’ve met this man..”
Now, IDK-anything, about the “SCIENCE” of it… I just know, when it comes to “range”, Layne Staley & Freddy Mercury are 2singers that can sing higher than Franky Valley & Lower than Johnny Cash, and go from high to low, in untimely-fashion!

PAIN IS ART, LAYNES CAN'T BE MATCHED. None of you took any music classes, but this is good, and really good. But no where near Layne's NO WHERE NEAR. Maynard would easily agree. Maynard is shortening the vocals to be it simply, and it doesn't carry the same pain. MAYBE however with some mix-mastering it could sound some what similar but the PAIN can't be replicated. A man singing from pain and heroin addiction are 2 things BEYOND different then Maynard. Love the two , I would never compare either one.

If anyone hasn't seen Corey Taylor do this song with dave Navarro and Taylor Hawkins.... it's pretty awesome also.
it really isn't. It's great if you like it, but all it did for me was demonstrate how untouchable Layne's vocals were. You can hear Corey singing outside of his range and going into this nasally, weak mix rather than a full sounding belt. Still not as bad as korns cover of would tho
