No. Matchsticks use the wooden sticks themselves as fuel meaning they burn out quickly as the fire travels down the stick. This uses pitch as fuel and not the stick itself, making it fundamentally different.

My father used to work in Estonia as a repair man for a company that operated unmanned and manned forest tractors, and he often would have to go out in the night to fix them, and he was pretty great at making torches, what were often even better than flashlights that were kind of limited to certain types, he used a big wooden stick with a fabric on top, + then Vodka or ethanol or even fuel to soak the fabric in to get it started. Otherwise one type torches are pretty popular in Estonia and you could find them in any bigger store so he usually tho used those.

I think they actually load a cave system and leave it so fast that there's hardly any time for the regional difficulty to rise and so almost nothing has a chance to spawn by the time they've gathered what they needed from it.
