914 LS V8 Renegade drama!

- More than once, the owner of this car had given up. A very bad experience with a pair of body shops, a random call to "come get your car parked out at the curb," and even a small truck-load of missing parts, were the starting steps of a soft-spoken, gentle, and sweet 914 owner. His goal was always to have his 'teener' get the Renegade treatment, but he wanted the donor chassis to be prepped, painted, and ready for a quick and easy slam-dunk conversion. Unfortunately, it was anything but... Feeling like the whole of the automotive industry was just waiting for a potential 'sucker' like this guy, he turned to Renegade for help and trusted their 40+ year reputation would help rescue this build and get it to the finish-line!
The headlight replacement are nice touch, doesn’t change the look.
Refines what's already there, I think.
I actually like how he really beat the shit out of it before handing it off to the customer making sure it's gonna to be able to perform and do what he paid to do
Absolutely LOVE THIS CAR!! You killed it man. The 914 is extremely underutilized. What a great car and I’d love to see more restomods! Excellent job RenegadeHybrids. Love love love it.
Thanks for the heel-toe downshifting 😊
When I was in high-school, one of these came up for sale in a local paper.
I was shocked to see a Porsche that was new to me. Then I saw that it had a buick 3800 swapped in and widened fenders. To me it looked awesome. I couldn't afford to buy it with cash, and my father laughed at me when I showed it to him. I am fairly certain that that 3500 dollars would have served me well had I been able to scrape it together. But we'll never know.
Oh yeah, this was the mid 90s.
That is the sickest damn 914 I've EVER seen!!! Congrats on making the "Ultimate Lemonade" when handed some lemons!
Wow! For inder $40 or $50 grand we have Million dollar performance! A car so incredible you can pick races with superbikes!😱😱
You can do that for even less with a Factory Five 818
Thank you for keeping the 914 - and the Hot Rod spirit - alive and well!
I had them build one for me many years ago. It was a fun experience going down and documenting the progress. I was trying to recapture that feeling I had with my 64 GTO rag top. It wasn’t the car, it was the time. I did the LS1 new old stock with the re geared 901. It was a screamer. Lots of fun. A guy in Alaska bought it sight unseen. Deposited the entire balance before I even sent the car to him. Good times, glad they’re still doing it 👍👍🤟 my videos are still on UA-cam.
Whatd it sell for?
Not quite what I had in it. I bought a nice Lotus Elise after that. Street legal race car. Very fast! No more cars for me, unless BTC goes to a million lol 😅

Truly awesome little 914 screamer, and I so appreciate the attention to detail shared by the Renegade Hybrids crew. I will be LS3 swapping my 2000 Boxster S in the future to create my own vision of a little go-kart with 'balls', but this 914 is next level in every way. Bravo, and looking forward to more exciting videos from the crew at Renegade!
Love the 914 and love that you put an LS in it 💯
This is such great work! It's a lot of effort, but it's definitely a hell of a ride! Chapeau!
Superbly done! It looks cool and seems to be entertaining in motion💫
Holy cow😂! Original with 2L flat 6 these were pretty boring to me when I was young. Awesome build!👍👍👍👍👍👍
Another Awesome 914 video guys!
Almost makes me wish I still had one. One of the most light weight, fun cars ever! And they used to be very inexpensive, LOL!
I had a 1975 914 1.8 in the late 70’s. Handled great, no power. Always dreamed of getting a 916.. Ive owned numerous fast cars over the year’s. I’d buy one of those in a heartbeat.👍
Absolutely lover that car! Such a smart conversion
The first Chevy powered 914 I rode in was in about 1971. Rod Simpson a LAPD cop did some conversions and offered a basic kit to bolt up the Chevy to the Porsche transaxle. Rod limited the throttle opening to about 3/4 on a 327 with around 250-300hp. So probably around a limited 200 hp when Porsche did not even offer a car for sale with horsepower approaching 200. But Porsche did not have a transaxle that could candle the torque until the 4 speeds in the 930’s years later. It was still quicker than any 911 in a straight lineand better balanced even with Chevy cast iron heads and block. But the 914 was not considered to be a real Porsche, with the possible exception of the 914-6 and the 914 flat sides became door ding art. I drove a 914-6 and the handling was benign but it lacked power. Finding a suitable 914 donor is now the issue. A Z06 motor swap would be interesting.
Doctor Porsche just crapped his pants.
Ironically, I bet he didn't. (Rumor has it...) Two 8 cylinder 914's were built as gifts to Ferry Porsche and potentially someone else. Furthermore, since the 928, Porsche has attempted to inject and even replace the flat 6 for an arguably better V8 platform. At present, Porsche builds more V-styled engines than opposing-flat-engines by far. Not that Porsche would have contracted an over simplified American Company to build anything, but there is certainly many benefits to the V8! From the distant roots of the overly simplistic "Peoples Car" (VW), why do they continue to over-engineer everything? I just don't get it...
@@RenegadeHybrids Just dont forget, if it wasn't for the Chevrolet Corvair, the Porsche 911 would never have happened. 1960 Corvair flat 6, Porsche was only a 4 banger... Porsche wanted a 6 but could not figure out the center cylinder cooling, they hired the GM engineer, a former aircraft radial engine designer... So.. you Porsche dicks, tip your hat to your poppa, when you see a Corvair go by...
@@RenegadeHybrids Ford bought the basis of the Duratec V6 from Porsche too!
Great 914 project!
Awesome, just awesome work, you guys are awesome.
My love for Porsche came when my brother brought home a 914, made it rally ready ( he was a mech on a local team, 930s 935) and built that little car to be the most violent cornering and breaking machine you’d ever have sat in. Then, he dropped that 1.8 and went 3L and suddenly it was truly a monster.
I cried a little watching yo rip away in this beast.
love the car but the
harley salesman needs to take a xanex. .We have swapped an LS Ranger and a couple e30 bmws but I might need one of these. My buddy George used to build the v8 swap kits for these back in the 80s and still has his 500ci caddilac swapped 914 rotting away in his back yard.
Wet sand it and wrap it! Great build.
Like many projects out there, you have to start with a clean canvas to end with a masterpiece...
I love those headlights.
That hood looks so much better without stupid ass pop-up lights.
Since you're talking about weight savings, I have an EarthX PC680 replacement that weighs just over four pounds and takes the space of a motorcycle battery.
Yes, and there were a few other points we could have saved here and there, but the lights and dash did a good job pulling weight off the front. Didn't really want to loose that much more up front. The car was handling extremely well. This video is just Scott showing off. However true corner performance, mechanical grip, acceleration and braking was magical in this car!
That’s a badass little car
Hot 914, love that exhaust.
Never been a fan of the 914, but this one was cool
Kudos!!! Make a Ferrari blush. Superb. ❤
Damn, another toy I’ll never have. I know one thing for sure, working your ass off only to give it right back really blows, honestly, WTF’s the point anymore.
Love the cars done by Renegade! I wish you would share what the cost to complete these cars.
Just call us. Customers don't appreciate it when the boys tell other potential customers how much the bill was for a certain car on a social media form. Maybe they don't want a spouse to know how much they spent, or their nosy neighbor, or whatever.
I wish there was a company popping out complete fiberglass tubs.
I'd love to get a 997 ls powered porsche...probably a bit out of my price range..probably, especially in awd and stick..oh boy. Neat car
Man I love it.
The gap on the hood looks like you can drive a Boxster through it! The car looks to be a hoot!
Be nice!
Agreed!!!
@@davebarkley8773 Didn’t mean to hurt your fragile feelings. I forget everybody’s from California.
At 4:18 “these are the new headlights…” I really want a set of those for my 914. Will you sell me a set? If so, how much?
Give us a buzz. We are selling these often now!
does anyone else think 914s are beautiful.
I never thought much of them back in the day but this one I like!
Fun car and very different.
love this car
Cool nice job 👍
Incredible.
light cars spoiled me forever. I don't need a lot of speed when the car is able to be controlled so well. besides, on a mountain road it's nice for the drive to be a bit scenic, and not a one hundred percent concentration test. .
Why the Miata has done so well.
You're getting old.......😅 me too.....
Love that car!
Oh how much nicer of a car that is
AWESOME!
Nicely done, Scott! What did the empty weight end up at???
Just under 2300lbs wet!
Yikes! That’s amazing! And Rwhp around 375/400??
It probably doesn't matter too much for the use case for this car, but is there any concern about aerodynamics or water ingress from the wheel cutouts in the frunk ?
There is always positive air pressure exiting the front wheel wells...either by the flow through the radiator at speed, or by the fans when it's going slow. The front trunk was never completely water tight in the stock 914, especially when your lights were flipped up. So, anything in the 'frunk' was ok to get wet. Obviously, we didn't care to keep things dry with the new opening in the front providing air to the cooling system, so it's just not a concern, really.
I LOVE it!
Awesome build! I'm sorry if this has been asked 100 times, but could you tell me what transaxle you're running?
Boxster S six speed!
That thing is bad ass
T.O.P. ! ! !
👍🥰👍
Heck Ya.......!
I want to Hayabusa swap a 914 so SO bad!
Love this car the only complaint I would have is I would want some sort of roll bar..other then that she's perfect...
The targa bar on a 914 is pretty strong and the car is certainly not prone to rollovers. Not saying it can't happen, but in comparison to other cars we've had fun crushing over many years, the 914 held up pretty well. Many MANY other sports cars have failed horribly in far less significant accidents. Thanks for your input.
@@RenegadeHybridsHopefully always rubber down because in my book she's perfect, and I'm not sure did you mention her curb weight..?

I’m doing the same build can you tell me where you got the dash and other components? :)
@@oren415 We made the dash...it was custom one-off.
Where did you get the headlights?
I've been thinking about doing that myself for quite awhile.
Renegade will be selling those shortly!!
@@RenegadeHybrids Cool. How well do they work as headlights? Do they have high and low beam?
@@notmeatall7116 Very good! Yes, they have high and low beam.
Ticks all the boxes!
How much for something like that go for?
It's best to give the guys at the shop a call. This car was a bit of a challenge because of the rust issues. Renegade doesn't do paint and body, but we can do some rust abatement and chassis strengthening. So, it really depends on the specific car.
just amaze
I like everything about the car except the drivetrain. I'd rather go with commissioning Brent at PFI to build a 700HP K20 with a 5 speed sequential dogbox. Might shave a good bit of weight over the LS and possibly make it one heck of a Time Attack car. Just my opinion. I really am OK with LS engines, but I'd really like to see an even lighter car for track course running.
What’s the 0-60 on that? I’m building one but I wanna know what’s to much hp and I’m trying to experiment that way I get the perfect balanced weight to hp ratio
@nathanielbeltran7416 Not sure. We don't do drag racing with these cars much. Track events and racing on continous road race circuits is what we do. Sorry...
What gearbox are you using?
Boxster S 6 speed
I'd take that over a Miata any day.
Nice inspirational video. Maybe you can help me too. I have a 1989 Lotus Esprit with some mods but now has a blown engine.... I'm open to all crazy ideas. :)
You know Renegade has an Esprit kit, right?
Here is the link to the Lotus Esprit video Scott shot for Renegade! This covers just about everything! ua-cam.com/video/92i-H9-FQbE/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared

Rod Simpson's renegade hybrids ?
No, Renegade is a completely different company...always has been.
Do the wheels last
Yes, these wheels are amazingly strong. We use them on a few 914 race cars!
@@RenegadeHybridsThere were a number of aftermarket mfg of this style wheel that broke, whose are these
@marklangren3142 These we import by the container from...you guessed it, China. These do not fail. Seriously, we have a few racecars that Scott races with these wheels. They are not a cheap light weight knock off. These are quite robust.

Out of business...thank heavens!
@@RenegadeHybridsSometimes the trash does indeed take itself out.
What headlights are those?
@@philrazzi7782 Give Renegade a call. They have them!
Where are the wipers?
@joefin5900 Removed for weight reduction. Furthermore, these cars shouldn't see much rain if you can help it due to high probability of rust. This one in particular should be kept dead dry since the body shop did nothing to remove, fix, and seal the existing rust before they chucked a layer of crappy paint on it.
What do you guys do with a Audi R8 V 10
Nothing yet. Sounds kinda cool tho!
I want one
I M P R E S S I V E ! ! !
If only I had MONEY!!!
How much are the headlights
$650 for the set. Honestly, that's a terrific value for what you get and what you don't have to deal with on the stock 914 headlights!
How much does it weigh?
It's gotta be close to 2k wouldn't you think
You need to open up that exhaust for better sound .
@@billkeller3083 We "need" to do this on your car. This customer was quite happy with everything, especially the exhaust note.
Blasphemy! But cool as heck!
Not sure if rust would be my path to light weight ;)
I'd certainly agree with that. The car left structurally superb, but cosmetically questionable. We aren't in the paint and body business, but we are in the 'mechanically-safe' business!
