Thanks, Budget Outlaws! I’m a budget guy, too - old Volvo endurance racer, the Flyin’ Moose 740 Turbo. Chris’ car drive very nicely, with good balance and that elusive quality, traction under power. Very impressive for a brand new garage build by an amateur just doing his own thing 👍👍 Stopped and shifted well, and had that incredible precise Porsche steering, at its best in the mid-eng. 914 chassis. A terrific start!
DAMN!!!! This car is cool! 914's have been one of my faves since I was a kid in the 70's. There are some really cool one- off features on this build! Top shelf!
Outstanding result so far. What you didn't show or talk about was your obsessive/persistent focus on iterative development of everything to achieve what appears to be simple, logical, brilliant functional details. But I imagine that is already dawning on your viewers. Thanks for sharing, Chris!
As a kid I loved 914/916's and Karmann Ghia's. I remember in my neighborhood around 1973 a guy had an Orange 914 with even wider flares with Centerline wheels and a big whale tail. We knew it probably wasn't the fastest car but, it probably handled like a slot car. P.S. I will always call it Sears Point like you initially did.
So glad to see your video, subscribed of course but I have been following your build on 914 World. Your attention to detail both in the build and your documentation of the build has been second to none! Just love it! I am getting close to having my engine running as well so really excited! It’s a 2 litre with twin Webbers land a nice cam with a bit t of head work too. Nothing to fancy! GT Flairs and 16” Fuchs. Your car is fantastic! Congratulations on such an innovative build!
I built a 914 with a renegade kit and a 350 back in the early ‘90s. That was quite a journey and I ended up selling it before I really got to know the car. I’ve always wondered if I’d do it again someday and… who knows? I can tell there has been a lot of innovation over the years since the advent of the internet and all of that. I love what you’re doing here and it’s got me thinking…
Think of all the time you'd save just buying mine! And yes, a lot of improvements. Like the Boxster's transaxle ability to handle the power with no fear of damaging it.
Your sense of style shows thru in every aspect of this beautiful build. Attention to detail is everywhere yet maintaining a simplicity right out of a design shop. The passion for beauty while having race functionality is evident. Actually I kind of dig the unpainted industrial look even though the painted version will probably be a stunner I'm sure. Hope the corrosion above suspension pickup points is addressed as it looks to have perforation, I'm sure it will.
Good eye there, Tom! Yep, all the corrosion has been addressed. At this point, the chassis is really solid. And I hear you on the "no paint". I'm still undecided on painting it or not. And I won't, unless I do! Thanks for watching and for your kind words - greatly appreciated!
Damn, Dude. Another beautiful build. Your sense of proportion and your design sense is nicely executed. I want to go through your videos and see how you do your panel recesses. Very nice.
Hey Kenneth - Thanks for the nice comment. Feel free to ask if you'd like any more info on the panel stamping. I could have done them with a bead roller but I'm far better with a plasma table and hydraulic press. Let me know what you think once you've checked out the other video.
Nice conversion result. In the hands of a pro it’s a beast. Seems it has good habits out-of-the-box. Great road-track car. Reliable, bespoke and aesthetically pleasing (if a 914 can be thought of as such). Def california hot rod.

With great power comes great responsibility. Does that monster have traction control and/or ABS?? Fantastic resto-mod. Can't wait to see it painted up and finished. And because of the low frontal area and not terrible coefficient of drag and smart fuel management/injection, I bet your fuel economy isn't too bad if you're just cruising along at 40-60.
The 914 build is incredible. But I’ll bet the most difficult part was getting the (very clever) hood hinges to line up. Come clean, how many attempts? Subscribed for that alone. 👍
That was totally unplanned. I was there to say hi to Randy (he was driving at a track day) and there just happened to be the autocross. Pretty cool that it worked out the way it did...
Love your videos. Can you provide more information and possibly a drawing on that 1991 Buick LeSaber latch/hinge assembly install? I just purchased a 914 LS and would love to modify the rear deck.
Glad you're enjoying. I don't have a drawing but you can check out how I did the rear hinge on my 914 World build thread. The hinge part starts here: www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=296900&st=720
Can't wait for more... IMHO, you've take a not so wonderful looking body design and, as form follows function, it's really becoming a thing of beauty... Is there a rollcage hidden in that roofline (?)...and I'm looking forward to hearing more of this jewel, both from inside and out (!) (BTW, how much does she weigh, at 400 plus HP?)
No hidden roll bar up top. Those targa bars are incredibly strong. I don't plan to track the car and didn't want anything that'd potentially create headroom issues. Car weighs about 2400 lbs.
Can the axle slip out of the transaxle ? That happened to me twice, once 80 miles from home with my 19 year old girlfriend. Not a fun phone call to her parents telling them we had to spend the night. The other time a guy trying it out, the rear wheel fell into a pothole as he was turning at stop sign. Why not use a strap to keep the wheel from falling too far ? Didn’t make sense to me, like a design fault.
Thanks! Great to hear you're enjoying the content. I'm not trying to turn things into a business so I don't try and sell anything I make. Hope you understand.
Great to see the car driveable. I'm wondering what it weighs in at with the tubing and v8, did moving the v8 forward change the weight distribution much? I'm am trying to decide what to do with my bare chassis 914.
I'll get the weight when it get's corner balanced. It's probably about 2400 lbs, all in. Moving things forward didn't change the distribtion in any way I could ever tell. I'll never drive the car hard enough (or well enough!) to tell.
This amazing creation will probably receive paint at some point. I would just comment; not to showy, looking like real business some subtle hue with thoughtful small graphics.
Thanks Tom! I agree on a "not showy" finish. The vibe I'd be going for is, as you say, more an "all business" look. A ways to go before I have to make those decisions, thankfully!
Wen you run an adapter plate for the bellhousing how do you compensate for the added distance between the pilot bushing and the input shaft of the transmission?
Hi Jon - I appreciate that you like the vents but I don't make parts to sell. I really want to keep the hobby a hobby. Hope you understand. Do you have a build thread for your Renegade-based project?
I don’t have a build thread…looking for alternatives to putting large holes in the inner fender. You sure you wouldn’t be interested in building a couple more vents?
@@jondemartini8862 About all I can suggest is that you take a look at the available hood vents. Maybe you can find one that works for you. Once company that has some interesting vents is Trackspec: trackspecmotorsports.com/
general concensus is they're good to about 500 hp. Don't drag-launch them, but... I have a buddy with an LS7 in his 914 and he dyno'd at 523 hp at the wheels. He tracks the car, has on-track video of it going 169 mph and he's had no issues with his Boxster S transaxle.
Thanks for the kind words. I do keep my files since I may need to recreate a part or update something if I decide to make a change. Most of my parts are one-offs to fit my build and likely wouldn't fit on another car. Are you looking for something in particular?
You should call it Project Paperclip for the German and American collaboration, and you and Randy could be brothers
Doesn't get much better than that!

did moving the v8 forward change the weight distribution much? I'm am trying to decide what to do with my bare chassis 914.
I'll get the weight when it get's corner balanced. It's probably about 2400 lbs, all in. Moving things forward didn't change the distribtion in any way I could ever tell. I'll never drive the car hard enough (or well enough!) to tell.
This is a cool one! Do you happen to know the shade or paint code of that gray color you used in the engine bay?
HA! Yes, it's Rustoleum Smoke Gray rattle can. Looks great, IMO.
Impressive!
Well, let's wait to see how it all turns out... But thanks for your support and encouragement!
Wen you run an adapter plate for the bellhousing how do you compensate for the added distance between the pilot bushing and the input shaft of the transmission?
It's got a custom flywheel that sets the clutch components in the location needed by the Boxster trans. It's a Kennedy Engineering kit.
@@attheredbarn1669 that is awesome that some guy somewhere has got it figured out.
Fun video. Very nice fab work. What size is the Holley Digital Dash? The smaller 7" or the big one?
Thanks! It's the Holley 6.86" Pro Dash. It looks small but works just fine when driving.
@@attheredbarn1669 Cheers! Keep up the great work. Just found your channel and am really enjoying the content.
I really like the hood vents and am doing a Renegade build…would you be interested in making another set of vents?
Hi Jon - I appreciate that you like the vents but I don't make parts to sell. I really want to keep the hobby a hobby. Hope you understand. Do you have a build thread for your Renegade-based project?
I don’t have a build thread…looking for alternatives to putting large holes in the inner fender. You sure you wouldn’t be interested in building a couple more vents?
Is there enough air flow for the radiator?
@@jondemartini8862 Yep, they work just fine. Car has never overheated.
@@jondemartini8862 About all I can suggest is that you take a look at the available hood vents. Maybe you can find one that works for you. Once company that has some interesting vents is Trackspec: trackspecmotorsports.com/
I am curious what brand of wireless PDU you are using. I really like the idea of minimalistic switch gear and dash design
Thanks! It's an ECU Master PMU16. Really nice piece of kit.
@@attheredbarn1669 with the CARTEK steering wheel wireless CK-WS-09 too, correct?
No, the wireless panel is the Summit Technologies Raptor product.
wow quality build kudos sir! do you know what the boxster transaxle is rated to?
general concensus is they're good to about 500 hp. Don't drag-launch them, but... I have a buddy with an LS7 in his 914 and he dyno'd at 523 hp at the wheels. He tracks the car, has on-track video of it going 169 mph and he's had no issues with his Boxster S transaxle.
does the transaxle have the same bolt pattern as the stock one?
No, this is a Boxster S G8620. Totally different from the stock 914 901 transaxle.
Did you save the DXF for all your parts to recreate them (sell them to others)?
Thanks for the kind words. I do keep my files since I may need to recreate a part or update something if I decide to make a change. Most of my parts are one-offs to fit my build and likely wouldn't fit on another car. Are you looking for something in particular?
@@attheredbarn1669 Love the rear engine bay bulk head metal work!
And he didn’t crash it? Awesome!
And it didn't break down on him! ;-)
923 subs?? You should have 9000 subs!!
Right? ;-) Thanks for subbing and commenting!
