  • Next up is my 1 of 12 - 1973 Porsche 914 that I've owned for 33 Years.
I’m the second owner of this rare ‘73 914 that was purchased out of Ohio thru Alan Johnson Racing (AJUSA) in San Diego, back in 1991. She sits exactly as you see here since the purchase 33 years ago, except for: the 15 x 7 polished factory Fuchs, Hoosier R8 tires and the GT bucket seat with a Simpson 5-point racing harness. I also dressed-up the top side of the motor with the red powder coating and a set of Hotwire spark plug wires. She’s been one of my favorite Porsches that I’ve had the good fortune to own over the years.

    Owner Richard,
My first car was a 1973 2.0 914. Man you make me really want one again and do a 6cyl swap. Oh my goodness your car is beautiful and sounds soo happy. Thank you for sharing this car with us.
I really made a mistake letting it go 25 years ago…
I couldn’t beat anyone with my 95hp stock motor but one corner, and I was gone!

Hey @MattnMathias - WOW, that's awesome on your first car being the '73 2.0L 914 - a man after my own heart :-) a good economically manageable Porsche, with enough get up and go to really enjoy!! It's never to late to find an early 914 at a reasonable market price and make the changes you might like. Thank you so much for your kind words about my '73 914 and yep, that flat 6 - 2.7L carbureted motor with the open GT engine grill - sounds great inside the cab. Thanks again and CheeRS

We did have the 1970 - '71 914 -6 narrow body and certainly the GT 914-6 with the fender flares (a classic), but your right - would have been nice if Porsche continued a higher performance 914, but with the oil embargo in '73 Porsche had to produce a more economically viable 914. Hello @RUfromthe40s - sorry for my delay and yes, the fun of driving a 914, whether clean or not so clean - that little mid-engine with the flat 4 or 6 was a special collaboration between Porsche and Volkswagen. Porsche's first production year for the 914 was 1969 thru 1976 and it was 1970-1971 that the 914-6 entered the market, whether narrow body or the GT with fender flares. Now - in regards to 'the old geezer' - yes, I do lean forward, but not because I'm old - I just like to be on top of the wheel and don't wanna reach for the shift knob. If my upper back was back in the seat, and being only 5'7" - the throw forward would be a reach for me. And, the cap backwards is my trade mark - thanks for your comment, appreciate it - CheeRS

I knew Chuck pretty well, and new he was fond of rolling the fender lips for more tire clearance. His 914-6 was named Gronk and I recall it had a 2.8 twin plug motor. These fender lips do not appear to have been rolled.

This video just showed up in my feed, I see it's been up for over 6 months. Great unique 914 you have there, thanks for sharing! I am a 914 fan myself, my first, a yellow 1974 1.8 was purchased from Stoddard in Ohio. It's long gone, having suffered terminal rust cancer. My current 914 is a very early '73, factory built with a mixture of '72 and '73 parts. It's a plain jane 1.7, nothing special except for having the vinyl wrap on the windshield posts.
My question for you - did Stoddard choose the chassis for the 12 project cars from a specific serial number range, and can they be identified by the SN's? Do you know how many of the 12 have survived? Thanks.

Hey @sespublic505 - I'm so sorry for my delay, with 2 cars shows this last weekend and a busy day yesterday - I'm just now getting to respond to yours and other comments.
Nice to hear from another 914 owner and especially from someone that bought their 914 from Stoddard back in the days. Sorry to hear about the rust cancer on your earlier '74, but sounds like your back in the driver seat with you '73. And nothing wrong with a 'plain jane' 1.7L 914 - it's a Porsche and there are no 'plain jane' Porsches :-).
To your question and a good one, but sorry - that is one question I did not ask when I was doing the research on my '73 with Mark, who use to be the service manager for Stoddard back in the days when Chuck was active in the purchase of the 11 tubs and the one complete '73 2.0L which I own. When I spoke with Mark a few years ago - he did state that all of the 11 specially built 914's are still on the road with 5 still in Ohio and the others spread through out the Country.
Also, my '73 was originally owned by the parts manager at Stoddard and I'm now the second owner which was purchased in 1991 and still love driving her when every I get the chance. Thanks again for you comments and hope you enjoy some of the other content we have on our You Tube - cheeRS

I don't think that's an upside down 915 transmission. It has a hole in the bell housing for a "push" type clutch and the number of ribs on the "bottom" is wrong. He also said that it has a 904 main shaft. That absolutely would not fit in a 915 case and it was hardly needed. The 915 would have different gear sets. There are some other clues I'm not as sure of. What I suspect is in the car is a 901 case, similar to the 914.

My tires are Hoosier R7's 205x50ZRx15 on all 4 corners - they are a DOT stamped tire, but also stamped saying "for competition use only" (I'm cheating and using them on the street). Their like a slick with wear bars - not for wet conditions though.
