A life-long friend of mine "reimagined" a 914 in 2003, LONG before that term was applied to how people now modify a car. He was the first person to engineer a swap of an LS2 Chevrolet V8 into such a road-going vehicle. But the car was a complete redo, not just engine. He swapped in a 911 Turbo transmission, manufactured his own clutch linkage, included 911 Turbo brakes and hollow-spoked wheels, used 911 Turbo rear fender vents to provide cooling, front mounted radiator, wide body kit, etc. He literally would stare at the wall, then close his eyes for a few moments and would then begin to sketch how to make all of this work. Did it work? Holy hannah, did it ever. Not only did the car run a consistent 11.20 quarter mile time @ 125 MPH+, but he ran the car in autocross and performed at speed/agility contests at airports with 0-150-0 runs and turn around (like U-Drags now by Edmunds). He beat 2005 Ford GTs at this event. His work was masterful. It was a brilliant car that he wishes he had not sold.

I put a Momo steering wheel, Dellorto carbs, Koni shocks and Pirellis on it. It was basically a go cart. It’s one of the cars that I’ll be buying again one day. I also had a Fiat spider, a first gen VW Scirocco, a 1972 Datsun 240z and a Nissan 240sx growing up. Now I live in Munich Germany and just bought a 2009 Audi A5 3.2 Quattro. Love that too, but I’m buying all of my old cars again one day. Nothing like ‘em!

Or to put it another way a delivery mileage 992 GT3 RS or a 992 Dakar and about £90k to spend on a Cayman GT4. Yes I know the customers for this 914 will have a lot of other cars but it is stupid money for a 914 no matter how powerful.
Back in the late 90's I had a 76' Porsche 914/4 2.0 and I loved it. Sadly it went up in flames. I would love to buy another some day. FYI: Not all 914's were made by VW! Only the early 914's were made by VW. When a new VW CEO came in, he didn't keep the agreement of the previous CEO, so Porsche continued production at their factory. If I could afford to buy one of these, I'd want mine to have the old pop up headlights, and in a period correct color. Very cool car. Thank you.

I grew up with 914 all around the corner of my home town in Oakland, California. This video gives me Great memory of 914. Now I have 997.1 Turbo and 996 c4s.
So did I. Also had the steel Chalon slope nose kit on it. Most people I guess don't realize you could fit up to a 400 into the engine bay and then mate it up with the 915 transaxle and basically have a car that can do donuts within its own body length and corner like a slot car. The whole reason they handed the 4's to VW to do and stayed with the less available 6's is because the 914 outhandled the 911 on rally tracks with the mid engine design but didn't have the looks to be the flagship and couldn't be priced like one. I agree. If you had £350k to spend on one special car, you wouldn't buy this. But, if you have an Aston or a ferrari or two, you've done the supercar thing, you have half a mil and you want something engaging, bespoke and special that you will pass down to your kids when you go, then yeah this makes a lot of sense. Likewise, if you want a performance watch a quartz LCD is the way to go, but we all really want the mechanical Speedmaster that costs 40x the price.
Cool build! I really like the front-end headlight mod. I'm sure back in the 1970's the engineers at Porsche Stuttgart AG would have gone in a similar direction had LED technology been as advanced as it is today. A set of bulky pop-up headlamps doesn't do a whole lot for aerodynamics in a low-drag build like the 914. Previously I've owned a 1987 944 as well as a 1991 BMW 850ci that also had pop-up headlights. My 944 was way underpowered IMO but made up for that easily with it's super low drag body lines. once up to freeway speeds, acceleration and coasting were incredible. I remember the feeling of as if My butt was just inches off the Asphault road in this little compartment and foot off the gas the speedometer would not drop off very much compared to other traditional vehicles I had driven. With the BMW, I had seen several mods where people made the pop-up open maybe half as much as normal and fitted very nicely were rectangular shaped lamps that either were xenon or high powered LED. The look was much more appetizing to the eye instead of the OEM version. If I had kept the 850, the next mod's I would perform would have been the manual 6 speed, cold air itake, aftermarket high flow exhaust and Dinan or other tuner's DME remapping to improve overall performance. I was looking at a $3,000 1977 914 on CL recently but after looking up resto part prices I quickly changed my mind! At my age, I'd prefer to modify another Mercedes Benz W111 se coupe! My 1967 250se was a fun car to drive. Imagine one bagged and rolling on nice HRE wheels. A big Garrett turbo and intercooler under the hood would bring some excitement to it.
This looks like they used Singer as their inspiration. Love these modern day touches that manifest themselves in the materials, paint and fit and finish in these new 'reimagined' resto mods. Only thing I would change is the front spoiler grill area. I would have that painted instead of black.
-350+kgs while being a fully strengthened 986 chassis is so much more. This even makes a Lotus exige look like a fat pig. They would sell at almost double this price being hand built at 5 a year from a quality restorer.
@@Turntablist_Mk2I agree, if this was built by Singer for example these lot complaining would be praising them. 10 years ago, heck 10 minutes ago if you asked me if anyone would ever Singer a 914 I would've said never. But with the 928 restomod (admittedly pretty dope) the writing was on the wall
Just because you are unable to understand the ideas and engineering skills behind them, these vehicles have a right to exist as long as there are people who love them and want to buy them. There are much crazier cars and as long as there is a market for them, they will and must exist.

A long, long, long, long, time ago, in a land far away, I was a child. My dad worked at an auto shop and one day brought home a light blue 914. I could barely see over the door while sitting in it. He took me for a ride and I experienced true love for the first time. I have loved several since but that first love is always the sweetest. This video brings back those feelings.
I remember when the stinger was special but nowadays these ultra expensive restomods are a dime a dozen amongst the ultra wealthy persons toys. They no longer make entertaining video topics on their own without an acompanying gimmick.
@@mr.plenge1301 Over modernized restomods like Gunther, Singer, Nardone etc lose a lot of the original design/feel. Personally, I think if someone wants a faster version of their car, a hot rodded version is perfect. Agressive cams, bigger carbs, etc. And still keeping the original body. Maybe a carbon hood if you want. But when they completely redesign cars, its like the soul has left the car.
Love the design! It looks modern and classic at the same time and unlike all the mass market "retro cars" like the Mini and Fiat 500 they did not make it fat and bulky compared to the original.
Wow, that is a very nice looking 914. Just saw a slant nose WIDEBODY recently after my dad passed away. Visited my brother's place where they sell all kinds of cars from the bygone years. Got a little short on it and looks great. It's also a restomod.
This really seems more like a bespoke car using Porsche components - about the only 914 part is the number on the back panel. The floorpan may be 914, but the 1511 site indicates they effectively build a new chassis around it. I imagine they have only kept enough to be able to say it is a restored 914 and avoid have to crash test cars to pass safety rules.
I wish that one day someone will create a restomod that is actually affordable by mere mortals. This is just another pipe dream for most that has no bearing on everyday folks.
There is so many new restomods project almost every week! I don't think it's a bad thing, I love them but I can't fathom how there would be a market big enough for these $350k+ or even $500k+ cars to be viable..
Fantastic. Love this car. I do wish we got a peak at the engine and undercarriage! I understand the why it's priced the way and while I can't come close to affording this cool little rocket, I love that it exists.
I've been following Fifteen Eleven Design's 914 Project since Day 1. The 3D renderings were superlative. The final result is competent but... well... not superlative. The art of bespoke Porsches reached its apex with Rob Dickenson of Singer and... everyone else is everyone else. Singer earned their place at top. They earned their place by slowly building their reputation. You must earn respect, not command respect. Many restomod developers are greedy. They immediately command premiums when their cars are unproven. At $500,000 US, the cost for this bespoke limited edition 914 is unearned. It's a shame but, unfortunately, it's become the norm. Still, I wish success for Fifteen Eleven Design.
i had a 914.. very underwhelming. the 912 was much more fun. superb execution of a project & amazing build quality. would love to see how they stuffed it all in the middle there with the engine.
If they ever bring back the Top Gear tv series, it needs to star Tom Ford, Jack Rix, and Jethro Bovingdon. All are extremely knowledgeable car enthusiasts and entertaining to watch.
A big Garrett turbo and intercooler under the hood would bring some excitement to it.
oh good it's only been about 30 sec since I've seen a Porsche restomod but hey at least it's under a million this time lol
This looks like they used Singer as their inspiration. Love these modern day touches that manifest themselves in the materials, paint and fit and finish in these new 'reimagined' resto mods. Only thing I would change is the front spoiler grill area. I would have that painted instead of black.
350k for an old Cayman with a bodykit 😂
An old Boxster, 914 was a targa not a coupe like the Cayman
@@0047sssssHe’s referring to the engine and gearbox, which are from a Cayman.
-350+kgs while being a fully strengthened 986 chassis is so much more. This even makes a Lotus exige look like a fat pig. They would sell at almost double this price being hand built at 5 a year from a quality restorer.
You ignorants are sickening
@@Turntablist_Mk2I agree, if this was built by Singer for example these lot complaining would be praising them. But because it's a small independent company they haven't heard of this 914 is just an overpriced Cayman in a body kit. But aren't most resto-mods just expensive versions of the original car ?
10 years ago, heck 10 minutes ago if you asked me if anyone would ever Singer a 914 I would've said never. But with the 928 restomod (admittedly pretty dope) the writing was on the wall
Can't wait for your next upload!
Exceptional workmanship in that 914 and also in the restoration jobs
At this point they are just trying to milk out every dollar from the ICE 😂😂😂 next restomode company will be for multiplas at this rate
Be happy we go out with a BANG . EV are soulless
Ooooh, now there's an idea. 😅
Just because you are unable to understand the ideas and engineering skills behind them, these vehicles have a right to exist as long as there are people who love them and want to buy them. There are much crazier cars and as long as there is a market for them, they will and must exist.
If they can make the multipla cool and fun, I don't see why not.
@@DavidTYork V12 the multipla 😂 carbon fiber chassis, 12 examples made, 1.8 mill plus shipping 🤦🏽♂️🤣
914 has always been one of my favorite Porsches
Definition of Restomod: how to turn obtainable driver cars into overpriced garage queens
lovely bit of kit
WOW, THE 914 HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY FAVORITE PORSCH!!! I KNOW I'M AN ODDBALL BUT I DON'T CARE. I'VE ALWAYS LOVED THE DESIGN OF THE 914, BUT NOW I HAVE A NEW FAVORITE PORSCH. The 15/11 914!!! All I can say is WOW!!! NOW IF ONLY I COULD FIND A WAY TO AFFORD ONE. UNFORTUNATELY IM AFRAID I'LL JUST HAVE TO KEEP DRIVING CLASSIC VWs. Oh well, caviar dreams!😎
That car is stunningly gorgeous and an incredible update to the original 914, I want one.
I love the 914 and 914/6.
But the car I love even more is the Fiat/Bertone X 1/9. It would be awesome to see a Fifteen Eleven Designs resto modded X 1/9.
The styling of this is a massive improvement and makes the 914 look pretty badass.
I appreciate a solid and brilliant restomod, seeing how I owned a 914 32 years, reworked or not: $350K!? Really? That's completely mental.
350k is beyond me honestly
I can't believe I'm saying this about a 914, but that is an absolutely beautiful car
If you are going to restomod please commit and add a modern infotainment audio system, tail LED lights, and a digital dashboard with cool steering wheel.
This 914 build is a masterpiece
0:25 I would never buy this.
.... ROD STIEGER Say's 2 DOLLAR ( The Pawnbroker )
Verdade.
Restomods have officially jumped the shark
I agree, its too far from the pretty little 914 that its just something else now, and completely unnecessary.
Jumped the shark-werks??
Gorgeous. Exactly the way a 914 should have been re-imagined.
I like these headlights better.
This video has awaken my enthusiasm to finish my 914 restomod . Modern 996 suspension , brakes and steering on 996 subframes .
The "Please stop making Porsche restomods" button
Why?
@@mr.plenge1301 I’m guessing ability to purchase on that one…
Please, don't press it
I remember when the stinger was special but nowadays these ultra expensive restomods are a dime a dozen amongst the ultra wealthy persons toys.
It looks like a smart roadster and a fiat x1😂
I love that Escort convertible. It's gorgeous
Everyone is doing porches restomode
Became boring
@@greathey1234 exactly
But this is a 914. I dig it!
Ya, cuz 911s and 914s are totally the same thing 😂
@@billymays7210 all cars that era did bad, pimp a 912, same
all cars from that era can use a new engine, or do EV build !
Wow, that is a very nice looking 914. Just saw a slant nose WIDEBODY recently after my dad passed away. Visited my brother's place where they sell all kinds of cars from the bygone years. Got a little short on it and looks great. It's also a restomod.
We can turn your Porsche 914 into a Smart Roadster for £350k...😂
What a dumb comment
he should have done EV update, another video now please !
20 min and no shots of the engine bay? top gear has become worthless
Really well done, I had a resto in high school, like a go kart
$350 k is pathetic and greedy.
914 was one of the best looking porshes ever made.
Is it electric?
No, thank goodness
No
Does it sound electric?
I won't think that after hearing the noise.
@@greathey1234 not even the windows!
That looks absolutely fantastic
I’ve been waiting to see this ever since I saw the pictures a few years ago
I wish that one day someone will create a restomod that is actually affordable by mere mortals. This is just another pipe dream for most that has no bearing on everyday folks.
Always had a soft spot for the 914 and this one just sounds like the ultimate. Would love one
There is so many new restomods project almost every week! I don't think it's a bad thing, I love them but I can't fathom how there would be a market big enough for these $350k+ or even $500k+ cars to be viable..
Always loved the 914
My dad had one of these! So cool to see!
Tom Ford on the thumbnail made me click on the video. Mr. Ford, you are a legend.
Fantastic. Love this car. I do wish we got a peak at the engine and undercarriage! I understand the why it's priced the way and while I can't come close to affording this cool little rocket, I love that it exists.
Stunning ! you do look a little uncomfortable with the seat that far forward,
Keep bringing these masterpieces back to life. Enough with the SUV. I can't wait to see the Ford Escort restomod too.❤.
Yesssss! Please continue making modern resto mod Porsches !!
THIS IS the 914 I want! This is the first time I've seen one I want. DAMN!
old 914 models did engine swap, all cars back then were crab !
My Fav porker ! 914/6GT this continuation is spot on Q Well done, its a great drivers car too !
I love the entire design so much. it would be very cool to see alpine take it and make a production car.
i had a 914.. very underwhelming. the 912 was much more fun. superb execution of a project & amazing build quality. would love to see how they stuffed it all in the middle there with the engine.
Oh wow I absolutely love it.
Loved my 914.
Brilliant video.
Yes, I would buy one.
Often restomofs are an original with changes for change sake .
But the looks are spot on 💪 here.
Nice work!
If they ever bring back the Top Gear tv series, it needs to star Tom Ford, Jack Rix, and Jethro Bovingdon. All are extremely knowledgeable car enthusiasts and entertaining to watch. And yes, I know that Tom was on the abysmal and short lived Top Gear America. That show was plagued from the beginning, and it had nothing to do with Tom.
Super cool looking car. I’d like a reimagining of the 67 Mustang hardtop.
Blimmin Norah
I love 914's but that is another level!
Interesting Smart Roadster you got there. Haven’t seen one in a quick minute.
I've always wanted a 914 since I was 10 years old. Wow
Looking good Tom!
Looks amazing, would absolutely drive one.
I want those headlights for my 914 for sure.
