Am I Crazy To Sell Our Off Grid Homestead? Sharing My Philosophy For Making Memories and Moving On.

  • In this episode, I'm discussing how people think I am crazy for selling our off grid homestead. This cabin has been in our family since the 1950's but it was falling apart when I took ownership. Since then, I have done a total restoration and built a workshop, a greenhouse and gardens and it became our full time residence in 2017. After 6 wonderful years of living there, we have decided to sell it and pursue other dreams while we are still young enough to enjoy them. In this video, I share my philosophies on life and ream fulfillment.

I agree with your sentiments in this video. I am 10 years older than you, and I have lived in 8 states and a Canadian province, rehabbed many an old house, built out and lived and traveled in three vans and a tiny house on wheels, worked in corporate America, farmed, traveled across the US and Canada many times, and to other countries as well, and sold places that I loved with all my heart and moved on to other adventures. I now live over 3000 miles from where I was born. My family (what's left of them) cannot understand me at all. Most of them still live where they were born. But if I die tomorrow, I can say that I have really LIVED my life to the fullest. And it's not over yet! I wouldn't trade my life for anyone's. Keep truckin' and enjoyin'. I say. No physical property can ever be as valuable as adventure and experiences.

I'm one year short of 80 and I can attest to what you're saying. I've had a wonderful life of adventure, from one conquest to the next, some adventures more successful than others, but each an adventure none the less. True words, true words! We get too attached to things instead of discovering new things. I remember people's reaction when I moved from Germany to the US. I was ready to do a big change again 25 years later. By then I had a husband and 3 kids and no one was willing to go along, so that dream fizzled. But should I become husbandless, I think I could just revive that dream and go with it after all. Then again: not my will but God's, shall be the final determination. Peace to you, boss!

I have a quote on the wall at our bar that states " MOTTO TO LIVE BY. Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractivve and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, margarita in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, screaming. WHOO HOO, what a ride!" unkown author.

Hello Boss! This was a great video. My situation is a little different. I had a home, and was blessed to have it for 43 years. I sold it to help financially with where I’m at. I miss my home and I love my life here also. I think its wise to own property these days. I wished I could have done that. Were living in incredible prophetic times and I just want to be as close and obedient to the Lord and Saviour so I’m not ashamed. I want others to know him and trust him with all their heart. I tell you this so that whatever decisions you need to make you go to him before action. Anyway, If say you have had a wonderful enjoyable life already and what’s left will be Gods will. As long as we are walking with him we haven’t veered off the path! Take care and God Bless always.

Your "the power of baby steps" has shaped how I approach change and/or how I approach the quest of the things I want in my life. I will never question your decisions, your lens or your vision as you get better with every step and with every experience in every phase of your life. You're strategic and calculated but you are also fearless........I appreciate you for showing us an example of how to live life to its fullest. CHEERS to you Bossman.

I also had a stroke 14 months ago boss. The second one almost killed me. But I was extremely lucky. I am in excellent condition for being 63. I believe it was God warning me to get my act together. Yes I made a lot of mistakes. And yes I eliminated all the stress. I have a second chance, and I want to live to be 96. As a professional musician I followed your philosophy; from Carnegie Hall to Austria and great performance halls in between. But when it was over at age 70, I left it to pursue new dreams. My colleagues ask how I could leave it all behind and I replied “there’s more gas in the tank of life”. In the last 5 years I’ve built a rustic house in the Ozarks, maintain my organic garden as a Master Gardener, and fish whenever I wish. It was hard to give up conducting symphonies, playing cello in quartets, and singing Schubert lieder, just as it was hard to turn over your keys. But on to new dreams! Our tanks are emptying fast! God bless and keep you in the palm of his hand!

That my friends … was a FABULOUS video!!! I’m officially 100% moved in with the folks now. They watch this one with me. Now we keep asking my father if he has enough gas left in the tank. He says he does. An hour latter decides he doesn’t. *Putt Putt* He’s stalling. So my recommendation is “JUST DO IT”!!! Liquidate what you need too (keep one) and do the road trip of your lives and most of all have fun!!!

A great video, "Make Beautiful Memories" came into my mind years ago and I wrote that phrase down. At the time I was a single mom with two children born with Cystic Fibrosis. Life expectancy was 12 years when they were born. I knew I had God in my life, without Him I wouldn't have made it. He was my keeper. I told my children that their life wasn't determined by a disease. My daughter lived to be almost 24 yrs. old. My son lived to be 38 1/2 yrs.old and married for over 13 yrs. Boss, you look so much like my son. You could pass as brothers He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing. I chose to let them live life. I tried to " Make Beautiful Memories". Keep. Making those Memories each day. Blessings to you.

Don’t worry Boss, as a old guy told me once, “old age is always 20 years from where you are right now.” I remember as a kid asking my mom how old she was. She said 36, I think, and I thought wow she is old. Now at 62, that’s pretty young.

    • @UncoverTruth
      @UncoverTruth 10 місяців тому

Absolutely not! At 52 I packed up everything and moved cross country to buy land in Tennessee. Lived 2 weeks in a tent in state park after I put everything in a storage unit. Bought a small camper to live in. 6 months in a RV park until I bought land to move onto. Built 600 sq. Ft. Cabin with some help. Developed 1/2 acre garden. 20+ chickens now. Rabbits and pigs too. Did I mention I did this almost entirely on my own? No truck so had to make 10x the trips hauling lumber and supplies in my car. No well (quoted $20k last year because I'm up on a hill and wells up here between 350-700 ft. down) so packed water for 6 years until I bought 4 -275 gallon totes for water catchment. Turning 61 later this year. Hard work keeps you young but no one tells you that secret! Better get going LIVING or get going dieing!

I have never spent more time than 2 weeks here and there in the mountains but can feel the desire to be up there sitting on my front steps listening to the creek rushing by. We leave in Oct for our first 3 weeks stay and have a big family reunion planned for July next year up there. The desire to drag up and go there is growing. As my buddy says to me often "I feel ya"

Im 65 and retiring december 31st, 2023. Ive done the cabin thing, sold it and paid off my house on seven acres with a thousand foot stream, a hundred blueberry bushes, fruit trees and vegetable gardens. I live one mile from one of the small finger lakes and minutes from two others. Electric has gone up to $40. A month cause im frugal with it. Tons of firewood free for the cutting. Dear, bear, turkeys, fisher cats and mink. Only a mile from town. This is where ill stay ..for now. But there are old people i met in my early twenties that I've never forgotten because of the hours and hiurs i spent with them talking about when they built the AlCan highway and TVA in Tennessee and the civil war battles that took place on their property. Memories sre great but even better when you share them with the young people who love the stories as much as you enjoyed living them.

BOSS , I HOPE YOU READ THIS. I haven't watched UA-cam in a long, long time. My wife had a stroke and our lives have changed. Anyway, I decided to play catchup and watch some of your latest videos. Then in the comment section I noticed someone talking about Frankie passing. "WHAT?" I said to myself. I searched through your videos going back 8 months and finally found the video where you made the announcement. I was torn up to say the least. I haven't even told my wife yet because she will not take it well. We remember watching you and Frankie playing around while you were building the New York cabin. God, has it been that long? I've been trying for almost 6 years to complete my dreams. But I seem to keep being kicked in the teeth every time I try to move forward. But I won't give up. I want to return to the deep country with a few acres to build my own (final) cabin and finish my life like I started it many years ago. With my own garden, and fruit orchard, and farm animals being raised for food. And watching all that happens on the homestead from up close & personal. By putting it in my hands and molding it my way. I just want to go back to the simple days. when I was the happiest.

The video isn't loading for me yet so I haven't seen it yet. Sight unseen, I agree wth anything that elevates you further. We sold OUR 'forever homestead' 2.5 years ago, because the value of it doubled in the pandemic, and _no matter how much we liked that homestead_ , we were looking at 150K in CASH for selling our HOMEstead, and were able to go buy us a LANDstead. 40 solid wooded acres of East Texas glory!! 😂
We've never had a damn thing in our lives... she's a widow at 32 with 3 small children and I'm a poor old abused child who became a multiple ex con. But we were able to get us SOMETHING.. a Suburban Homestead! But then... the OPPORTUNITY arose and we struck while the iron was hot. We were blessed to be able to buy a home to raise the kids in, and we also seen the blessing opportunity arise when the homes value doubled in 7 years. Take that which is offered! Life's too short lol

Which she did and it’s the first thing I see every morning. “ get off your ass and go make memories you’ll never forget !” Take care my friend

I'm so glad you keep journals. I do too but unfortunately, not as long as I should have. The first few journals I kept need to be rewritten. Long story another time. One of my life long dreams was to move back home to Nova Scotia and I did and there was definitely sacrifice to do it. I was born here, adopted and taken to the US and brought up there. So the US has always been a home to me. Now Nova Scotia is but the US will always be as well. Love your videos as always. Always learn/realize something every time.

I have a huge stack of journals but a lot of them I don't bother reading. Too much time, money and emotion wasted on short term relationships. It was fun at the time but looking back, I wish I had used my time more wisely :-x

@@thebossoftheswamp I can totally relate. My first journals were written under a kind of brainwashing. I don't want anyone reading those after I'm gone and thinking I lost my mind. Well, I did for a while there lol. I also don't want to destroy them so some serious second writing is going to happen.

This video really moved me. After reading so many of the comments left here, I just find anything to say that would be better or mean more. I am so touched by you & Lori & your lives. Your outlook on life is beyond wonderful. So few people will ever have the experiences that you two have had. So many people are spending their whole lives on that hamster wheel. I'm one of them. Married 8 years to an awful, abusive man. Divorced him 42 years ago. Great decision. I'm 71 & still working full time. Living paycheck to paycheck but grateful that I have one. I absolutely Love your videos. I guess I'm living life through you & Lori. I'm ok with that. You folks are a Blessing from GOD! I am looking forward to more of your adventures. I can't imagine how painful it will be to have to give your key to someone else. Makes me sad. But I agree with your way of thinking. Not many people have your guts & outlook on life. I wish You & Lori the best in Life, & I wish the same for your precious friend Glenn. Love you both. Brenda Arnold Wichita KS.

JC, I have followed you for years and have had the very same philosophy as you. As you said, things can change in a blink. In 1998 I was hit on my Harley going to work. I almost lost my right leg. After three years I ended up rehabbing and learned to walk all over again. I bought 100 acres with a cabin on it, sold off some timber and had a well drilled. Since you first started making Vlogs on You Tube, I have followed you and have been dumbfounded by our similarities. You are like a brother from a different mother. I never miss you and Lori's vlogs. I almost bought your homestead in NY, but decided NY wasn't for me. I wept when you lost Frankie. Your Vlogs still inspire me to this day. I really enjoy watching your life unfold. I love the Dutch oven cooking too. Glad you recovered from your illness. Take care.
    Sam

Thanks for sharing! I really enjoyed your wisdom, thoughts & video. Your absolutely right about living and enjoying the journey. We never know what tomorrow might bring. I had intentions of traveling in 2022 but got covid in 2021 which left me on oxygen and I'm still trying to heal myself. Some things in life don't seem fare. My husband who was 6 yrs younger than me died from covid. Now my nephew who is a farmer had to have an emergency surgery on his neck because they found a fractured vertebrae and some other issues. He's lucky to be alive and able to use his arms. I was told the tumor on his spine was cancerous. No one has the promise of tomorrow and it's best to enjoy every moment of it along with your family and friends. I still have hopes and dreams for my life and I hope that I'll be able to enjoy every last minute I have of it. Hey Boss to you and Lori I've really enjoyed getting to know you through your videos and no one can tell you or anyone else how to live. Just do what you think is best and I hope you'll include us on the journey. Best wishes to you Always. 🙏 God Bless ❤

Boss, now I'm sure why I've watched your videos for so many years !!!! " Freedom" Like you, i never liked the rat race. I've traveled all over the US as well as a little in both Mexico and Canada, for most of my adult life. Whether it was on a motorcycle or truck, it didn't matter, as long as i was free. Now, at 71, medical issues are starting to catch up with me. Sometimes I'll think about them memories and a great big smile comes out !!!! Thanks for reminding me to value life !!!!!

WTG Bruce. Ya know... medical issues and old age will catch up with everyone regardless of how they lived, and some get hit by a bus, even if they never drank, smoked or cussed and went to church on Sunday. It's a gamble from the git go ;-)

A visit filled with much wisdom. Thank you BossMan for sharing your thoughts. It's always a joy to visit with you here on YT. Listening to you reminded me of two quotes I heard a number of years ago and have not forgotten...'you never know when the last time you do something, will be the last time you do something'...so be present and enjoy... and 'when you have major life changes, you make major life changes'. Change is scary, but so it being paralyzed with fear. We can't go back, so we must move forward. It's best to be about living and do what you want while you can. As you've said, life can change in a moment. God bless you as this 'season' begins to come to a close, and your prepare for the next adventure. I look forward to sharing the journeys you and Lori, and Tildy, will take together. Thanks for sharing them with us.

We just did the same thing!! Sold the farm, bought a camper, headed out of cold weather for the winter and headed overseas in Feb. for endless adventures.. Have traveled the US for many years, raised six kids, spent 37 years in the military with hubby and seen all of the US but Alaska and Hawaii.. Gotta go while you still can.. We are 71 and 76 and dont plan on stopping the adventures anytime soon.. Go for it!!!! and by the way, as much as I have looked, caskets still dont come with pockets. So dont worry about getting rid of "things."

My favorite memory is when you and frankie would be out there in the swamp setting trap lines. Those were fond memories, even though I lived vicariously through you guys. I felt like I was right there with you. I always wanted to live the life you do but growing up in the desert anything planted that's not native dies in the summer sun and wood and solar stuff doesnt last more than year or two , we dont have woods. At 48 We are making the plunge before its too late and moving up to the forest. Your videos over the years have been inspiring and I have acquired traps to run my own lines. In a months time the world will be a different place and scenery for us. I thank you for the inspiration and great ideas you have shared in the many years I have watched you. God bless you Boss
