  • I take stock of my logs, cutting skidding trails to the trees and sizing them in order from largest to smallest. A friend visits and we spend days exploring the wilderness.

Man, these log cabins use a lot of timber. 72 logs is a handful. It's amazing that your 4 wheeler will handle them all the way to your building site. I don't think most folks realize what kind of weight is involved with unseasoned timber. It is not insignificant. Hats off to you for moving them single-handed!

Yeah these are a lot bigger than the ones in the old cabin, which he just carried in to the build site.

My only advice if needed is after all this time of waiting to chase your dream go all out on the project and don't sweat the cost of more expensive materials if affordable. If this is your dream and retirement sanctuary the investment is worth every extra penny. Good luck my friend!

Well @Shawn what a difference time away from the pressures of working on your homestead, and being with your lovely wife, has made 👏👏👏👏Your face and eyes look years younger . I'm so happy for you both. Now it's back to that final push to get your logs gathered on site, before winter sets in.
Funn y you should mention the water sounds and the waterfall as on your last few vids I was thinking about how this new mic picks the water sounds up so clearly, and I was thinking how it's not quiet out there in the wilderness .... there's always the sound of water, or trees/ leaves rustling in the breeze. It's a bit like being in a sail boat with constant slapping of the water on the boat. Interesting that you'd speak on the subject following so closely to my musings regarding it ,at the opposite end of the world in Australia 🇦🇺. Anyway, thankyou for your generosity of spirit as you share so unselfishly ,your thoughts and plans, and life in general. Following along faithfully, God speed as you move into the next phase of self reliance 🤗💞🙏👏👏👏👏

When you talk of leaving trees that you may need for replacement for future use or future generations reminded me that there is an inventory of trees kept in the UK for replacement on old buildings. A couple of years ago, a 100 year old oak tree was harvested that had been grown for a specific old building, a cathedral I think. :)

I know exactly what you mean about the water noise. I live in a mill town in GA that has a river running through it. I live about 1/2 mile from the river. Over the years, I would sit outside in the middle of the night, just to enjoy the quiet, and would hear this noise. I thought it was some kind of manufacturing plant or road noise and it really pissed me off that it was constantly there, ruining my quiet evening. Then one night, it suddenly hit me that there were no plants or road noise and that it was the river noise I was hearing. It suddenly became a good noise, lol...

Hi I'm in South Africa. I find the use of wood rather interesting. Mostly our house are built of brick. We of course don't have your extreme temperature changes between summer and winter. I live on the highveld, a few kms from Johannesburg. We had a 'very cold' winter this winter -3 to 4 C° 😀
There are part of South Africa that have snow in the winter, but mostly in the mountains!
We have just had our first summer rain, all 30 mm of it. It's always a blessing to get rain. Africa in general is a really dry place! Especially in South Africa.
I just love all the old tools you use to build your cabin with, it's very interesting how well they work for you!
Can't wait for the next video.

I’m with you on the overwhelming sound of waterfalls or even crashing waves on a windy day.
We used to camp on the banks of Lake Ontario and occasionally the wind and crashing waves
would seem to go on for ever and actually be quite exhausting. Not helped by the flapping of
canvas, shaking of the tent or trailer. Still something very magnificent about the awesome power
    of nature.

So happy to see you back. I started watching you a few months ago and love you videos. It was always my dream to have a log home in the woods and just watching your creation of your vision is so amazing. I never realized the hard work involved and greatly appreciate the major effort you put forth to build your dream. Thank you so much, and I will continue watching and enjoying. God bless you and your family.

I can almost smell the faded green ferns and tree sap, reminds us all about passing time and changes. Beatiful time of the year because most bugs are gone only the silence and sound of broken branches. I enjoyed this episode.

When my son was a baby I used to have to put on some waterfall white noise for him to sleep! Thank God for the sound of moving water 🌿🌊It was the only thing that worked! Oh, and the sound of a hockey game from an indoor a rink. He both a kayaker and hockey player now🏒🚣🏻‍♂️

Shawn, you look so much better the last month or so. That disaster had you a little ragged around the edges, understandingly. It's just so nice to see you fully back and healthy looking. Many blessings, bro.

Excellent idea to have an inventory of what you have and where it is. Having a stable bridge that will handle your vehicle AND the logs you are hauling is extremely important. Being pinned to the bottom of the creek would not be my idea of a good time and I am certain that you wouldn't be pleased either. Blessings on you and your family and friends and any livestock you might have wandering around the house and yard. Stay healthy and safe!

Welcome back! I'm happy for a video on either of your channels, but hearing you break down a little bit more of your current plans is always wonderful...anyone considering a similar lifestyle or even as a recreational passion can gain so much insight from your experiences. Hope you enjoy the fall beauty and stay safe.

I love the sound of moving water. I have tinnitis (constant ringing in my ears) and use a white noise machine when sleeping. I always set the sound to either a stream or rain fall.

@@rawstarmusic I'm originally from Canada and I love the outdoors, grew up hunting, fishing, and camping in the wilds of BC. Moved here 31 years ago, married a Japanese gal and now I live in the city. I don't get out to the countryside much, so I'm living vicariously through this channel LOL.

I only wish we had a more diligent prescribed burn policy out West USA for the last 30 years, we might have lessened the horrific fires. Doing away with all the underbrush and small dead stuff is so important as you have pointed out. Keep up the great work❤️
