SIMPLE LIVING Life Philosophies From 36 Years Of Living In The Woods. Off Grid Living Vlog #89

  • In this episode, I share my thoughts and philosophies on life after living in the woods for 36 years.
At at very young age, my mind was made up that I was going to leave the rat race and go live in a cabin in the woods when I grew up. I ignored all the discouragement that was thrown at me, I chose my own path and stuck with it. I didn't want ordinary, I wanted extraordinary and that's what I got.
Is living in an off grid cabin, on a mountain in the winter worth the risk and challenges? Follow our journey and see how we handle the adversity we are faced with. On my channel you will find videos pertaining to homesteading, gardening and living off the grid with fun DIY projects for self-reliance and SHTF emergency preparedness situations, with some campfire cooking and good old backwoods humor thrown in. Sharing knowledge and stories from over 30 years of living in the woods.

Was litterly sitting here talking to my wife about being depressed in life. It comes and goes for me. The phone dinged, and it was the boss with this video. He knows how to put some pep back in a step, naturally. The boss helps people in so many ways. Love the man.

My son and I were able to watch a fisher for about 5 minutes, while out deer hunting. What a beautiful animal. My son thought I was gonna shoot it because I was watching it through the scope. Told him they had their place in woods too.

Got out of debt, started my own home repair business and set my own agenda and own hours. Happier doesn't begin to describe it. I take 6 weeks off every year and go out West to camp and hike. I stay home when I feel like it and work on our homestead. I could go on, but you get the picture. Thanks for everything you contributed to my "vision on life", boss.

I'm like you, Boss, left my comfort zone in 1988 and climbed into semi leaving a 20 yr. nursing career in the dust. When I was in high school a guidance councilor told me I wasn't nurse material, to bad Mr. Haight didn't live long enough to see what I achieved while saving peoples' lives while driving that semi. I heard many a Police Officer say, "Mame, we don't get many nurses driving a semi." Daughter's and wives thanking me for being in the right place at the right time. But none of it was my doing, GOD put the thought in my brain, opened the Right doors for me to succeed in a life that was 100% different from what I left behind. I am so glad I took that leap of Faith back then because those 15 yrs. I spent on the open road was the very best life for me. I look back now, as I enter the 7th decade of my life, I have no regrets, the stories are etched in my memory.

It takes thoughtfulness to know what one needs to have a vision and execute the vision. Many do not have the mental maturity to use what we have been blessed with. A mind to think with. A body to execute. Opportunity to make it happen. May the master physician lay his healing hands on you and bless you with many more years.

Very, very happy to see that you have lived life on your own terms. I chased my tail for decades with work, buying “stuff”, houses, cars, college degrees, etc. Finally, at age 54, after years of seeing people say someday when I retire I’m gonna...and then retiring only to not be able to, or dying shortly after, I jumped off the train. Bought a camper headed out with my Boarder Collie (looks like Tildy’s twin) and saw America. It’s been 5 years and what a ride it’s been. Stay happy my friend.

I will never regret my life either. In 2007 my husband and I sold our house and property. We took off from New England on a newly purchased 32 ft. Sailboat. With the scant amount of sailing experience we gained over the summer. We took off for Southern Climes. By Thanksgiving day we were heading across the gulf stream to the Bahamas. And for the next 12 years we traveled 45,000 nautical miles on our boat. So now nearing 60 we decided to buy land in Tennessee and we are building a timber frame cabin. Everyone said we shouldn't do it but had we listened to them our lives and experiences would have been no where near as rich.

I’m 64 with health issues too. I’m surprised I’m still sitting upright. I’ve done the soul search myself when I was at my lowest point health wise. While I didn’t finish my dream list, I’ve had a relatively good life. It is all about love and family. I’ve been blessed with a woman I met at 24 who was by my side until 2012 when her heart gave out. Now my kids and grandkids are my focus. I can’t get out in the woods anymore so people like you let me still live vicariously while I am locked down for what I expect to be by final year. Thanks for all you share. It means a lot to many of us.

When I was young I always wanted to be “successful”. I went down different paths pursuing that goal. At 37 I ended up with a sizable fortune after selling my business. Funny thing was, I was happier when the business was growing than when it became “successful”. In the process of becoming “successful” I destroyed my health and I placed relationships as secondary. I have a nice house and I’m financially comfortable but so what, it doesn’t make you happy. I fantasize about living a different life. Living in a dry cabin I built myself outside of whitefish. Maybe I’m a finish carpenter or plumber. I hunt for meat and have a garden and greenhouse & live a simple and humble life.

(JF) Works both ways. I spent my efforts the opposite of what you share and we are the same in one way. So if the very basic things to achieve are what our fellow animal sp. exist for (food / shelter) then you are a success. You have shelter. Isn't everybody that is a willing member of the Rat Race seeking the same as you had? I decided not to do what you had. I own nothing. I have little and life is nearing its end. Does it matter?

I jumped off the train over 20 years ago (or was derailed by my mother's illness), when I quit my job as a Kinesiotherapist, built a house in the middle of our family's ranch and began the life of cattle tending! As I write this--your words never rang more true. My boss wanted to retire since I came to work in his solo Dental practice nearly three years ago, but his wife (a breast cancer survivor) was never ready for him to do so. They are financially set and have two huge homes, an army of people to help them in each location and many many friends. They both are good people. Just as this new year began, January 4, he got very sick confused, he fell and hit his head and while being checked out at the hospital, tested positive for Covid! He is 77 and had had a heart attack five years before I came to work with him. He would talk about retiring all the time. He is now in the ICU on a ventilator and we do not know if he will make it or not. This can be a hard lesson to learn as I help his wife navigate what my be ahead. God Bless you Boss and I do so enjoy seeing you enjoy your life with Lori and the dogs....I look forward to more words of wisdom and your adventures.

J C, you have done it again. Thank you so much for sharing. Your outlook & your journey through life, in all it's ups & downs is just so inspirational. In this, my 77th. year, I look back & I find I have so many things that I am pleased with & so very few regrets. I find I have so many people to thank, ( both good & not so good), for the place in life I find myself in today. One of my few regrets, is that I have not kept a diary, but I will be starting one today, covering both the day to day & probably, quite subjectively, memories of my first remembered beginning from around 3 years of age. As you often say, life is good.

I grew up on 16 acres and to a child it is alot of land. The peace I got escaping the other six siblings, mom and dad, helped me to find God. It grew from there. It was just him, me and his ideas and my wonder. Then as parents grew old I wanted and shared almost every day with them. Then they passed and I became a grandmother. So blessed to love like this! I spend nearly everyday with them and kids and I would never have it any other way. Their love and my love returning is more happiness then any measurement of anything and I wouldn’t change it for anything. Making sure they know Jesus means life eternally together! Thank you for sharing Boss. One day I hope to meet you as well! God bless.

Thanks for sharing Boss, as a young person who has had your same philosophy for several years now, it means a lot to hear someone who’s in the later part of that journey confirm my beliefs.

" suck it up before you exceed your sell-by date"...great advice BossMan. Thank you for sharing a very personal part of your journey. You brought tears to my eyes. Our days are numbered, and you obviously have a few more left. God has more plans for you. When I was going through a sever season of sickness, I thought to myself...I am going to die, and do so well before my friends. The Lord spoke to me and said these words: 'Just because you are sick does not mean you are doing to die. You're just sick'. It was a season of testing and learning to trust Him more. He brought me through, and I am soon celebrating the 15th. anniversary of my healing. Praise the Lord!!! And my friends are still alive too!! You are an inspiration and you have used your time and skills given to you, wisely. It's best we live our own lives. In really does not matter what anyone else thinks anyway. I read a quote years ago...'when you do what you love, you'll never work another day in your life'. Keep doing what you love and share your adventures with us. All the best to you and Lori. Prayers continue for you. God bless.

Another outstanding vlog from the Boss! Thanks for sharing your journey. Even though I was fortunate enough to retire at 50 and be very healthy, I often get wrapped up in the "doing" and forget to "live in the moment" and get joy from all that mother nature offers to those who choose to see it. Your video's help put things in perspective!

I still like your ramblings and when I Young leaving school ended up going to the coal mines as a sparky. I was a loner and I enjoyed my weekends going camping, mainly on my own. Hiking trails I loved. The main thing is that I enjoyed the simple things that these weekends brought. I did hitch hiking, cycling caravaning, anything to be out in the country. I admire what you have done with your life, but I am happy with how I life turned out to be. Good luck to you and your adventures, say hello to Laurie and the Pooches greetings from across the miles.

I came across your channel 5yrs ago. Your series about how you came to be “living the DREAM” & about your pop got to me. So I got off my dead ass & sold everything & moved out to Montana again. Purchased some land & started what I stopped at 29 yrs old. I’m the exact same age as you JC, & re-started living the dream ! It’s been a long year building my 100% off grid home. Fell all the trees I needed to build my house & waiting for the last of all my milled lumber to finish drying. As you say , ally, “It’s a labor of love” for me. Many many people have been “nay sayers” & try to discourage me from doing what my dreams are. I’m not listening to any of them & keep on plugging away at my dreams. I lost a very close friend of mine, but before he died I asked him what his dreams were. He responded with ...”pffft, I’m married, dreams are for kids, I have responsibilities to attend to.” He had a massive heart attack 3 days later ! I’m just like you JC, I just keep holding onto my dreams & conquering them & on to the next one! Know this JC, because of YOU, I’ve got my dreams back & I’m living them NOW !
I have never followed what someone else’s way of living, I followed my own path. I have found that there aren’t many of us around anymore. So please keep living your dreams & never ever stop dreaming !!!
God bless YOU & LORIE oh , & the kids too !

Leaving our lives as we know it in a growing city in Saint Cloud Florida and moving to TENNESSEE! You are an inspiration! I live my life by thinking one question every day. Wow did you nail it about retirement! I retired a month ago at 61. My coworkers told me I would get bored. I said there's more to life than just working and paying bills. I don't know how much time I have left but I want to enjoy what time I do have left. I'm learning how to play the piano now. A lifelong dream of mine. I have been blessed to live several dreams. It's funny how your priorities change as you age. Too many dreams get taken to the cemetery never to be fulfilled, and that's tragic. And yes, it was hard to stop working after 40 plus years. The first 2 weeks I described as feeling untethered. Beholden to nobody but myself. Now I just feel freedom and that in itself is a blessing.

I live three miles from the AuSable River bluff, in Northeastern Michigan. I'm 64 years old and my wife & I are living a good retirement here. A few years ago, in the winter, when we had about as much snow as you got there, I decided to take a walk to the AuSable River bluff, via cross country. I looked on my topo map to determine the compass direction to the river from our log cabin. I bundled up and pulled my snow boots on and took off with my compass in my pocket. When I got to the river bluff, I found a place to sit and enjoy the peace and solitude. Take care.

Your videos let people know and reassures them that it’s perfectly ok to live a life that’s not on the common and expected path of this world. They also show that it’s not all doom and gloom if you choose that path either. I’ve been following this channel for years now, and it’s definitely changed my mindset, and I’m sure it’s changed the mindset of thousands of people all over the world. So next time your walking in the bush, think about that. It will put a little more perk in your step and a big smile on your face. From me and all of your subscribers, THANK YOU🙂

It's so true what you say. Seems the part of what I have always loved is just beginning for me.That first night back in our family cabin will certainly be an emotional one.been in our family for 121yrs.
