What I hear is a slight low frequency roll off on the DD-5 repeats that lends a percussive quality to syncopated repeats. The old DOD delays actually do have a high pass on the repeats that make them sound more analog or tape like, but I don’t believe that is the case with the DD-5. It does have an analog dry through. I believe the bit depth is lower than newer models and that may be adding the warmth you are perceiving. The DD-2 and early DD-3 are warmer than the 5.

The DD5 is the brightest delay from Boss by a long shot. One of the reasons why I have always liked it. Modding them is easy to make them sound more analog by flipping a switch. You just add another capacitor to a DPDT. Gives it even more flexibility.

late to this party but I LOVE the idea of modding the tap tempo into the pedal itself! that Has to be super convenient! I have had a dd5 for over 20 years and absolutely love the warmth Boss captured in this pedal! I love setting on channel 4 and interweaving melody. I also loved running it into a stereo Uni-vibe and riding my whammy to create record warble. Very special pedal!

Good job🤘DD5 is the ultimate boss analog circuit delay while digidal repetitions. When people will notice that its quotation on the market will skyrocket

It's easily my fav digital delay. Not just because the repeats are so crystalline when playing clean, but because they stay out of the way when using it with higher gain. It ducks so well.
Dotted 8ths are phenomenal and no other pedal out there has a more musical sounding reverse delay IMO.
I highly recommend getting them modded for a hi cut and a stored preset.

Great video. LOVE the DD5. It is such a tiny workhorse that does what it does so well. I bet your tap-tempo mod makes it so versatile. For years I stacked the El Cap & DD5 together. I had something similar in that I modified my El Cap so that it's built in tap-tempo switch also controlled my DD5's tempo. It was simple and glorious sounding. I sold the El Cap to fund a Timeline in pursuit of presets and MIDI and basically used the dTape setting 99% of the time. Eventually I moved on to the Volante and have been very happy. I gave the DD5 to a friend & bandmate and still get to hear it from time to time.

I too added tap tempo to/on the pedal long ago when I first got it. I just put a mini momentary switch inside the screw on
barrel of a 90* 1/4” jack. Plugs into tempo input next to instrument input. Stays upright with repurposed conduit hanger-small ? shaped thin metal ‘strap’ originally made to mount 1/2”- 3/4 pipe to walls etc. it wraps around the 1/4” jack, with a thin piece of double stick foam, just to keep it firm & secure. The hole that it’s drilled with for mounting to the wall lines up perfectly with the DD5’s hinged top screw, So there’s no alteration of the pedal, I just added a small lock washer to the original top screw! I have gigged solid with it, with never an issue.

Thanks for sharing! I gave the DD5 a try and it has become my go to delay. Having explored & owned many delays, I have to agree there’s something special about this pedal, perhaps it’s the tonal clarity and percussive feel- likewise I might also pick up second for stacking or running different tempos.

You mentioned something that I totally agree with. There is something about the Boss DD-5 that sets it apart. I have been using a Boss DD20 Giga Delay on every pedal board since 1999...But the DD-5 is just unpredictable and incredible. I need to get to know it better, and I look forward to doing it. Some delay pedals have been around in my arsenal and quickly left, this one is around until the wheels fall off...

All Boss DD are worth the money they cost. I had the DD3 and I am now a happy owner of a DD8. The DD8 is simply a beast of a workhorse: it got it all. A very cleverly designed pedal. It has also an analog mode. When I tried this analog mode I must admit I did not expect the lovely sound it can actually yield. I would be interested in hearing a side by side comparison of this analog mode with the glorious DM2. My educated guess is that the difference between the two will be hardly noticed on YT.

Thanks for making this video. I always wondered why i kept coming back to this pedal and no other pedal quite has the same vibe. Your chordal arps are money with delay

Well played! What pedals do you use in the beginning to get that tone? And do you have any cheaper anternatives?
    Thank you!

Hey! I believe I had on some compression from the Walrus Audio Deep Six, drive from the JHS Morning Glory, Delay from the Boss DD-5 and Reverb from the Line 6 HX Stomp. Look into the Truetone Route 66 Compression/Overdrive in one. Amazing pedal with a tone of possibilities.
