  • Why choose a digital delay? We offer some food for thought to help you through the repeating fog
    Welcome to the show! We’re returning to one of our favourite topics today: delay. You’d be entirely forgiven for thinking that most digital delays are basically the same… but as we explore here, the differences are vast and potentially very confusing.
    To whit, we offer three ways of thinking about digital delay, in order to help narrow your potential choices. We start with ‘old-school’ 12-bit delays that we’re calling ‘character’; moving on to modelling delays that seek to emulate classic machines of yore. We then discuss modern ‘creative’ delays which are those devices that are pushing the envelope of technology and imagination to take you far, far away from that simple, clean repeat. And yes, some pedals fall into all three categories!
    The hope of all the above is - as ever - to help you ask a better question.
    Don't ask ‘What delay should I buy?’
    Instead try ‘What do I //really// want my delay to do?’
    Enjoy the show!

    Remember, all your favourite music up to the mid 80's was recorded on tape. Tape delays, in good shape, were far more 'pristine' than the first digital delays. The sound people tend to ASSOCIATE with tape delays today is that of a worn tape, driven input stage, and questionable transport system, producing the modulation, wow, flutter, and 'warmth' (tape saturation) that we think about in tape delays. I worked in broadcasting for years, and I would often 'borrow' one of the stations very-well-taken-care-of Revox 1/2" stereo reel-to-reel machines to provide delay on my recorded guitar, and, if I needed it to be, it was FAR cleaner than any digital delay of the time (80's and 90's.)

      One thing that I’ve always had trouble understanding, was why Hendrix never used an Echorec or Echoplex live.
      He never even attempted to play quite a few songs live, because there was a lot of tape delay, and other effects on them. He was the highest paid live musician in the world, by ‘69, and it wouldn’t have been that difficult to figure out, as bands like Pink Floyd, were using them in ‘67 onward.
      Gilmour even was using the same BC108 transistor Fuzz Face, that Roger Mayer had Jimi using by ‘67 through his last performance.
      Gilmour wasn’t going through Marshalls, but he certainly got Fuzz and played loudly, like Hendrix.
      It’s just a shame we never got to hear Jimi playing the 1983 medley, or just delay in general, live. With what he was doing, I can’t believe he wouldn’t be using tape delay, like a Syd Barrett was.

      True. I remember reading about the earlier Boss DD2 and DD3 and how warm they were compared to a well maintained Echoplex. Eric Johnson used the 3 along with a Echoplex and later, a Memory Man. I think he liked the warmth of the early 3's but also the longer delay times.

    The sheer number of options available to guitarists today are almost a disservice - too many things to choose from. I say this as one who has spent years trying so many different options of delay, reverb and of course dirt. I've had to tell myself, as a songwriter who needs to make demos, that good enough is good enough. If I were an artist, it would be a different level of obsession. Appreciate all you do. I have learned so much from your videos over the years.

    In 1981 I designed and programmed with a Z80 12bit AD/DA running at 4Mhz. It had like 2K or ram. It was at that time really high end. Today I work with 32bit AD/DA converters (ESSTech) and 32bit microcontrollers capable of DSP functions at 120Mhz in the same package and they have 12bit AD/DA internally.
    Modelling: I always like to remind people that Fourier and LaPlace came up with this math in 1820's. Everything they did was infinite, not 12, 24 etc... without regard to sample rate.
    You would go to floating point math in more complex delays because the required coefficients are all less than 1. So doing math with integers is a bit of a mess with coefficients times samples. Some DSP and Processors have built in floating point processors to make this math easier and less complex. Just requires more powerful CPU/DSP.
    Great show, I am a set and go and would probably go DD3T. Thanks Gordon

    Picked up an SDE-3000 EVH a couple weeks ago and it's absolutely glorious. EVH 5150 III as the dry amp in a wet/dry/wet. Huge sound.

    • @ordinalkirk
      @ordinalkirk 6 місяців тому +1

      Yes. The EVH SDE-3000 is the best delay pedal I have ever owned. It does the Andy Timmons Halo sound but the EVH version of that. It is also easy to use. A very quick skimming of the manual will allow you to get deep into all the functions. I have the Free The Tone delay. It arrived with the LED broken that tells you the delay is on - not the end of the world but not great. Also, deep dive into manual was quite frustrating. Not able to get the sounds I want out of the FTT delay, although it is has a beautiful pristine delay. Recommend highly the EVH SDE 3000. Super easy to use and it will elevate your sound.

    I wanted to comment on the Halo, but first I wanted to say that Dan was on FIRE today with his playing , especially the intro bit, and my goodness, the bridge pickup on Red - wow. Back to the Halo, I think it's amazing, but the bit about Reverb is important - you've got to turn reverb off in your chain/amp to see just how much "reverb" the Halo setting adds. When I first got the pedal, I had reverb on my amp turned on, and it was too much - once I turned it off and just had the Halo - then perfect! Also, don't forget everyone, that the Halo is NOT just the Andy Timmons sound - it's a dual delay, with presets, so the other footswitch is its own, separate delay. For the money, the Halo, is just fantastic!

    I feel like the Polymoon gets put in this box of being super weird. It DOES do all that stuff, but it also does do really easy and obvious delay sounds. I wish we could calm down and look at it normally. That stuff is only complicated if you turn it on. I understand why Dan did, but it frustrates me slightly that these sounds are the only things people think that pedal does. Try this on: Polymoon a great different feel alternative for people who get into space echo or echorec multitap type sounds. More rhythmic possibilities, different modulation, but still in there. Free the Polymoon! It's a misunderstood pedal, and I think portrayals like this, understanding their good intentions, sometimes don't help. Love the show! Old school TPS!

    I think one of the things that doesn't get mentioned enough is that the early Boss digital delays had an 800 ms maximum delay time, while the early Boss analogue delays maxed out around 300 ms. This has implications for the ways in which delay can be rhythmically used, because the classic dotted eighth note delay at 120 bpm works out to 375 ms, and the quarter note triplet delay is 333 ms. For those of us who used rhythmic delays, I think the most commonly used delay times for popular music are going to be in the 300-500 ms range, and the DM-2 and DM3 just couldn't do that, at all, unless you increase the tempo to an uncomfortable 144 bpm or higher. I didn't pick up guitar until about 1989, so my first delays were a DSD-2 Digital Sampler/Delay borrowed from the drummer in my band, and later I purchased a PS-2 Digital Pitch Shifter/Delay, which went up to a full 2000 ms.

    • @tiadiad

      Yes, but if you shorten the delay time down to 14-3 ms, and raise the feedback, while feeding the whole thing into an amp, you get vocals. As long as you filter right.

    I'm not going to start talking about what's on my board and what isn't, because I really think you had the right approach to this. What I will say, though, is that prior to TPS (many moons ago), I used to absolutely HATE delays!
    My current board has three delays. One is "always on" and acts as a bit of a doubler, the second is a modeling delay that covers a few classics, and third is rather specific in what it does (muti-head drum echo). Currently out of rotation is really good analog delay. Board real-estate in combination with the fact that the digital ones are getting REALLY good, made me swap it.
    So, TYPES of delay all day long rather than specific brands/models.
    Cheers, everyone!

    Great, I am searching for the definite delay pedal... I have a Reecho Pro by Moore, I have to say it's a very nice option, yet obviously it's pretty cheap (got it used for €75 in a store, works perfectly). The Tape simulation is out of this world for its price

    I am a delay freek and bought the Halo, because I loved the small form and thought, right this is the one. I only really use 3 delay settings live. Dotted 8th, quarter and slapback. But, because I am a singer and sometimes wear boots! I was hitting the 2 footswitches by accident sometimes,lol! So now I am using the quartermaster to switch! But, the real point I wanted to make in relation to this video is, I was used to digital delays and just turning down the effect volume to not have it too prominent. And for me, it has been a real struggle to get the Halo to sit right, one because of the actual level of the delay, is so different to my Nova Delay for example. But listening to this, I think I will start using wet/dry. Not wet dry wet, I can't take 3 amps to the gig! Thanks for this, it really made up my mind!

    Great playing and demo, thanks much. For me it was one of your best episodes.
    It didn't make the cut here, but the GFI System Orca delay is my sleeper of sleepers. When I first took it out of the box, I played it for an hour without touching any knobs and was in heaven. I own a Line 6 DL4 mk2 but even with its 30 delay algorithms I don't prefer it to the Orca, which only has 4. I often play with ONLY the Orca straight into the amp, with no other effects and it sounds terrific. Usually I don't want other effects masking the Orca's pure, great sounding delays. 3 of the 4 delays ported to the Orca were already on the Specular Tempus. The Tape Delay is new for the Orca. I also have a Flashback 2 which is a decent enough delay pedal but no competition for the Orca.
    For a pedal that costs about half of what the Orca goes for, I thought the BOSS Digital Delay was damn impressive. I've never owned a boutique delay pedal so those were not of as much interest, and probably not comparable.

    I loved every one of them - and in headphones, I have reasons and feels about each one. The surprise was revisiting the old Boss after all these ages. I am a Halo user - and 80% of the time on the default, a bit of tone rolled off - and an expression pedal. In the rack days, I had an Ensoniq DP4 and I made it do everything (modulation, delay, verb - in stereo - but I used it with analog dry through). But alas, the Halo remains the one I always needed! Love that Two Rock, as well. That was epic!

Lol, that was some amazing playing Dan. I would also like to mention Mick's playing wasn't a struggle. It sounded like a great blues-rock sound that would inspire. Keep that up. It may be your breakout sound.

    Great show!
    I still use my trusty DD-3 (bought in '89) as my basic delay, chorus is handled by an old CE-3, flanging by my first pedal - a DOD 575A from '86.
    I added a Black Fountain (oil can simulation) for that real swampy feel.
    I then got a Mercury 7 after being blown away by it on your show, that one will keep me entertained for the rest of eternity :)
    Meris has definitely found a special place in the effects world.
    Overall, we're spoiled for choice, but the biggest upside is that so much more is possible with less gear than ever has been the case.
    Learning how to use it is the challenging part.

    I have several delays including TC Electronic Triple Delay, EHX Memory Man etc, etc. But one that I'm surprised wasn't more popular, especially for experimental adventures is DigiTech's TimeBender... endless possibilities and I paid $120 for it. It's a keeper. Then again I think all delays are "keepers"! hahaha Thanks for another great episode of TPS. Cheers guys!

  • @Telorchid
    @Telorchid 6 місяців тому +1

    God bless you TPS, for doing your thing in the face of adversity. To the complainers, do you realize how many options are on the market now? So many channels are on UA-cam to demo every single one! Why is it on TPS to cover them? This is not an 'entire market of delays' survey, nor an assessment of merit in that context.
    I think this is a VERY good primer for those trying to grasp the range of digital delays, and handy pre-sorting for those approaching the multitude of options for the first time.

    Great show. As stated, you could go on for days and days. That said, Andy's Halo does more than you guys had time to get into to, and had Andy demonstrate, but it really does a LOT more when you take the deep dive. Like all of these I would presume, it would take years to get everything out of every pedal, and there'd be new ones introduced to extend your journey until you expired. A happy man or a perplexed man, but a fulfilled man nonetheless.

    Loved the cheeky Radiohead reference on the SD3000D part. You've crammed a lot of want into this episode! I foolishly thought the 3 delays and 2 reverbs on my current board were enough. I had no idea that I needed a Halo, DL42 and the Boss. I'm also auditioning a Jonny Jag on Friday and praying I can't get on with the scale length. I'dve loved to have heard the Edd Strat with these too.

    I have been looking at the Meris Polymoon alot recently, but i think this episode actually helped me decide it wasn't the delay pedal for me. It sounds great, but it does way too much for my playing, i think i might be looking for something more simple.
    Thanks for a nice informative episode, i think Digital delay is where it's at for me, some DSP these days are just so good, i struggle to see why i would go analog to be honest. One of my favorite delays is the SolidGoldFX Electroman Mk.II or it's newer version, the "EM-III" :)

    As a bassist who plays guitar and loves your show it would be really interesting if you could get a bass player on for a show of what guitar gear do bassists use and what bass gear do guitarists use.
    My daughter prefers my Orange bass amp for her Gretsch Penguin because it doesn't get flubby and she uses my bass signal splitting pedal on her pedal board. I use a bunch of guitar pedals for my bass signal chain.

    • @Leychen
      @Leychen 6 місяців тому

      I'd say you can use most gear for both, but it probably depends on taste and setup which gear is "good" for both.
      For instance i use an Earthquaker Devices Dunes overdrive for bass while my Darkglass Hyper Luminal compressor is on the guitar board. There's also people who use like Engl Fireball guitar tube amps into 4x10 for bass.

    • @Scoots1994
      @Scoots1994 6 місяців тому

      @@Leychen Yeah, and we know that because we tried it. But I don't assume all guitar/bass players know those things. I can't tell the difference between my Empress Bass Compressor on bass and guitar but there must be one since they make one specific for bass (I assume there is a difference in the frequency it senses at).
      I just think it would be something actually new for the channel and that people would learn a lot from it.
      That said, I don't know if the boys know a gear junkie bassist who would delight in spending an afternoon fiddling with gear, but it wouldn't surprise me if they did.
