In this video I explain how Tarkov Arena works and my thoughts and first impressions playing the game. It has a long way to go, but I've enjoyed the first few days rocking the game.

I like your critique but I think it's also fun to use gear kits you wouldn't normally use for a prolonged amount of time. I've even caught people taking the toz loadout, but I think that's a different situation entirely (the toz loadout being the worst ARP kit in the game and lowest gear score and it doesn't progress anything so it's a pure noob trap). The worst part about Arena IMO is going against the people who have had Arena longer, and particularly the blackjack loadout. It feels bad when your entire team has SKS, ppsh, and stockless AK and some dude is running around with 2 100 rnd mags and killing everyone and never dying. The point fire is crazy accurate, even at substantial distance. It's been my experience that skill can't make up for that difference at all. It'll be even worse today in terms of player progression but otherwise I don't mind the same kit for multiple games, even if it is scuffed, I just think they need to limit what you can go up against if you're running trash kits.

They need to make you pick a kit before you matchmake, and base the gear score off that. It solves the potential "gear score smurfing" issue, and helps ensure you're going up against people with similar "tier" kits.

@@D3st1nyHD no, because then you can't level up your kits with people that have similar kits.
Then you would have the problem of not being able to select the kit you play according to the map you are playing on. For example I like playing a Marksman loadout on Sawmill but a CQB loadout on Bay 5. I would suggest that you would have to choose a range of gear score (for example 100-200) before you select the maps and when you accepted the game you will only be able to select your unlocked kits for that gear score range.
I think the reason you get Airpit soo much is because a lot of people really like that map and there is probably more people queueing for only that map, so you are more likely to get matched with people that want that map.

Two possible solutions to the Gear Disparity issue
1- Restrict a match to one specific "Tier", and show that tier on the Accept screen. This way people can choose to queue for one or multiple tiers while still seeing which one they will play upon accepting a match
2- As highly suggested, just pick your kits before queuing. My main issue with this is that randoms will have no way to coordinate their kits which is already an issue, and we all pretty much hate that you are locked into one kit all match anyways.

I know no one will see my comment but I will still write it…
1. They should add a co-op mode with *1.2 or at most *1.5 XP boost(maybe make the increased boost only for weapon unlocks).
2. they should make it if you unlock a new weapon you could “unlock” one of the attachment(or ammo) to use in any other weapon ‘important because if you decide to unlock a new weapon path it will be easier’.
3. they should add a game mode called “Timmy”, only level 1-5 can pay and they even could add name tags only on this game mode? and have a flashing indicator showing you have a bleed, and make the med in the inventory flash too. of course this will be for beginners only.
The fact that people who paid for the DLC upwards of 6 years ago aren’t in but people who just paid get in immediately is a HUGE slap in the face for people who have supported BSG to even have the chance to release this DLC.
Let alone the fact they pulled an Ark and released a DLC before the main game is even close to being finished…
Arena is more of a standalone title, not really a DLC at all
I don't know anyone that has had EOD that long and is not playing Arena right now. I purchased EOD in 2019, registered on the arena site when it was announced, I have access. Friends with older accounts all have access as well. Honestly it feels like they gave me a bonus game on top of the game I already paid for and have gotten thousands of hours of enjoyment out of. And all EOD players will get Arena eventually, they just are testing things with a small group and trying to do better so the servers don't implode... We are not entitled to anything. If you bought EOD 6 years ago, Arena was not even something you thought you might get (I just figured it would cover any future paid map release/ content for the main game).
I could have cared less about arena prior to playing it, but after 15hrs in, I'm hooked. Definitely a nice addition and I can't wait to see where it goes. If anything it is just a great warmup/ practice for PVP in the main game. Of course it needs balancing, but it is still a shit ton of fun as is.

That is exactly my point. They did not have to give EOD Arena. I did not feel entitled to it because I bought EOD, but they did anyway. I bought EOD to support the game. The big stash and gamma were a perk (but one that could go away at anytime). @@ryanbolson23 Regardless, you will get access to Arena if you have EOD, but it does not sound like you have EOD... Im sure once wipe happens all EOD will be able to play Arena. It is like days you have to wait...OMG
@@willdabeast410 I have EOD and still dont have my invite. Ive registred. I bought EOD 5 or so years ago. 2000 hours or so played. The rollout it borked.
Idk if this would work but I feel like a mix of custom classes that you make yourself and a csgo style class selection might be good? Like you make a class that adds up all the costs of everything you choose from armor to ammo, then while in game the more kills you get the more money you get to select the different classes you've made. Im no game dev but I think that would help balance things out a little bit. And they could add progression for each gun so you can use whatever gun you like and level it and get different attachment unlocks as you use that gun. But these are just a spit ball idea
I really think a counterstrike style attack defend bomb plant mode could work. would need like a gear score cap for teams and maybe a defuse kit added that has a gear score attached to it. I feel like bomb plant would be a good setup for tarkovs gameplay.
Bomb plant would be such a dope game mode in tarkov, I've got 4k hours In csgo and around 1k in tarkov I'd be nutting

My take on balancing kits, is to take the maximum tier kit you have unlocked and then decide the matchmaking on that (+- 1 tier, so that matchmaking does not take forever). If you group up with a friend, that has higher level kits, then those kits are the deciding factor in the match making.
I love how the loadout system works. There are guns, ammo and equipment that would never have been used if we built our loadouts. There would be 2 or 3 metakits that everyone would built and no variation of guns in the matches.
Also, the Shootout Tournament is a lot more fun than the Team Deathmatch. You can spectate the other teams when it's not your match to study the gameplay and look at their kit when they are spectating next to you. And a lot of free booze!
Gear score taken into account in matchmaking is the biggest thing they need to introduce. Then I am looking forward to more modes, especially PvE mode. It has a lot of potential for sure.
For ranked they need to have a floating ARP earned based off your teams avg and the other teams like R6 does. Example team A has higher rank and Team B has a much lower rank. If Team A wins they earn less ARP and Team B losses less but if team A looses the losses a lot more and Team B wins more. Idk if it’s like that now because I’m not in the beta yet lol
Thank you for putting together a slow and thoughtful review. Not just blurting out randomness and complaints on day 1 of a closed beta release. Some streamers really don’t understand that they turn off potential new players by saying things like 4/10 when it’s not warranted. This game needs work (a lot), but I’m enjoying it and so are my mates. It’s something new and has potential.
I've been having some real good fun on Arena. Makes me think of playing MW2019 for the first time again. Love this style of game and cant wait for release of both Arena and the new Tarkov wipe,
What do you think about BSG adding the ability to purchase loadouts to unlock them as another option to using the tree progression unlocks? Then you can theoretically work on one using XP in the tree system, while working on unlocking other classes by paying to unlock them with roubles. Early classes can be cheap and then more expensive classes are really expensive. Or maybe even you can only purchase unlocks for classes up to a certain point and then you have to do at least some grinding to unlock the high tier classes in each tree
I have been saying this ever since they revealed arena and its game modes, there are no fun game modes. What I thought would be a dope alternative to tarkov extraction, is just glorified Counter strike 5v5. There needs to be respawn modes, like what Halo and cod or even what QUAKE had. Gun game would be a perfect mode for arena, it would allow you to see what most of the guns in tarkov are and how they handle. Sadly, the game modes we can play are FFA, PVE, 5v5, and a shootout tournament with a single, duo, and trio mode. Duel is most likely going to be a 1v1. Been a eod owner for 4 years and Im really pissed that they couldn't deliver a game to the casual playerbase. No casual player is going to want to play competitive 5v5 with tarkov's game mechanics. Think about it
My guess regarding the maps beeing never sawmill or the other is that most players have deselected them as sawmill was not a "favourite" of the current streamer meta
i got the game in november 2017 and just got acces yesterday, so i think about everyone should have acces now. did 3 matches and i like it so far.

In terms of the maps being selected by the matchmaker, did you consider that maybe most people are only queing those maps because they like them most, therefor having a significant bias towards them for quicker que times?
I have no problem with the unlock sequence, it is the same as World of Tanks. Would be nice for 2x XP on your first win each day etc. and its ok to be stuck on bad loadouts; it gives some reward to getting through to the better ones.
But they need to have these kits in tiers based on gear score and match you with people using similar gear score then team total ARP as secondary matchmaking.
i think being able to see what your team is picking like in R6 before the map starts would be another thing that would be nice.
really wish they would just have it so we can make whatever loadout we want and it just puts us into whatever gear score the loadout should belong in, maybe they could add that in a separate casual mode. For me tarkov stands out the most when it comes to the variety of loadouts you can make from really good ones to really stupid fun ones, not having that really ruins it for me
Pretty sure that is supposed to be a feature eventually, built from your stash in base eft then a gear score assigned.
@@mosin9349 Eventually when? This shit of BSG not telling anyone anything is bad with Tarkov, and even worse with a game like Arena. Will we need to wait 5 years to get that feature? Nobody knows even they even want to change it!
@@Swarm509 I have no idea, he just explained how it will work. The beta test started a few days ago, I don’t know if it’s quite time to start concluding features won’t actually ever be implemented.
I think if you could spend the exp points where you want to instead of being designated to a particular tree that could also be helpful. I chose the shotgun side of assault and I unlocked the tx15 but when I use it it doesn’t gain me any additional exp anywhere so it’s basically pointless to even use.
I just unlocked that and the 153 kit. 153 kit slaps. 9 shells semi auto finds a way.
Yeah I've made it through that too. I just meant using the tx15 doesnt get you any progression. I dont understand why some of those branches of those trees don't continue to the bottom. @@Pifferfish

A lot of the major problems have almost no hurdles to change so I'm very optimistic that arena may actually be a lot better sooner than we expect
Great video :), i'm really hyped for arena access and I think the weapon tree system will make more sense when unranked comes out
unranked would help a lot for sure. being able to grind to your kit risk free would be nice. That being said, it really doesn't take that long to unlock a viable kit as is. It really only affects the try hards trying to "be the best in the world" which is futile if you are not a streamer

About the MP: I can imagine that you can get matched with players with an MP with, let's say, +200 more than you and the reason why you have player with lower MP with you in your lobby is because they are playing as a group where one has your MP but the rest has a lower MP. This would be quite similar like in War Thunder.
About the often picked Airpit or Bay; It's possible that people like to play these maps more, so you cannot tell exactly if that decision is coming from the server alone.

I never went to any arena sign up page, and I was able to download it on Monday. I also only had e.o.d for maybe 2 years at most. The waves do seem a bit random.
While it may mess with the matchmaking system (though gearscore systems already exists) I am surprised there isn't any custom loadouts or customization, even just one or two loadouts later in the progression. You could even Tarkov 'theme' with gear you can select having a cost with a set amount of roubles to spend so you have to balance the cost/effectiveness of armour, guns, attachments and ammo. It doesn't even need to be the full loot pool from EFT to help keep balancing more manageable, just so odd to not have customization in a game known for customization
I bought standard edition in 2017 and upgraded 2018 and got in day 1 in the afternoon
I regret picking Scout but now if I switch class, I go agaisnt level 4 armor and visors...

I was SO frustrated at first because I didn't play the first day I had access (never registered, btw, just have EOD and it showed up in my launcher) and by the time I was playing, many people had better kits. If you are playing with a garbage kit, you will just lose so much more. I currently ranked the CQB kit that starts with a 5.45 ak with no dust cover and am ranked up to the 100 round m4 and it is NIGHT and DAY! The problem is, if you don't win, you will not be able to afford these kits. No idea how it's going to work if you're a ranked up player with no money. The cheap kits are absolute garbage.
Once you get to where you are, you just carry the team and win most of the time... I suffered through the right CQB path to get to Bromine and now I just win.The shit kits can be supplemented in map with static weapon/ med spawns and looting corpses.
I agree kit balance needs a lot of work, but your team mates make more of a difference to your win rate ... As a solo, your kit will carry your team for sure.

I'm having fun playing Arena with my buddy. SoloQ is a hit or miss, sometimes you get gems out of your teammates, sometimes you just want the game to end as quickly as possibly and go next. But overall, it has some good vibes. The point about gear is 100% valid, need to be fixed
The problem is that you lose money losing, and eventually this will grind out many players into shit kits or free kits with no way to get out of the hole. On top of this you will be slower getting the new kits, and basic kits are basically a dead spot on the roster if you are unlucky. Play with a group of 4 or 5 and wind over 50% of your games and it just snowballs into better gear super quickly.
If you stick to one class even losing constantly solo gets you to a decent loadout before you run out of cash. Once you get there, a decent kit can carry your team if you are decent at Tarkov pvp. Just got to Bromine and now I dont lose... lol. The grind to get there through the MP5 (pea shooter, have to leg meta with green tracers...) tanked my ARP@@Swarm509 but it only took 15hrs (3 sessions). I thought for sure I would run out of funds, but only got down to 600k
Also, the key to playing shit kits is to pickup the static weapon/ med spawns and loot corpses when you can. Those sniper rifles smack hard against most of light armor you encounter and give you some much needed range

BSG could use War Thunder's system where you can research anything using anything, but there is more efficient predecessor vehicles that will give you more XP than the others.

Love the viewpoint and the unbiased review. I do wonder though if having the clean-up team and possibility of bosses appearing is a bad thing - it feels extremely stupid to have the outcome of an 'esports title' rely partly on rng, especially if its a ranked match.
Thats the thing tho, RNG is rooted in tarkovs base gameplay loop. richochet chances etc.

You should get experience towards the next kit if you're just playing in that tree, you shouldn't be forced to use the kit right before the one you're trying to unlock.
Kits need battle rating like vehicles in war thunder and matching should be based on kits battle rating
Can we actually get some description for this registering thing on this website? It's no where on that. This seems like a huge gloss over if this is true.

I think matchmaking should have gear classes, or perhaps a point buy system like in insurgency. That way you can play against other players with similar gear, rather than end up matching against people who have an inherent advantage because they had more time to grind.
In the last few months I haven't played Tarkov almost any more, I've just done the same quests too often (I've owned the game since 2020) and the progression of development no longer feels like it's progressing at all. For every "patch" that comes out and is supposed to fix problems, other problems arise in areas that actually seemed to have been completed a long time ago. Then a patch (which took forever to arrive) described changes that, in my opinion, could have been programmed in a very short time and were then sold as "game changers". I also thought that Tarkov was announced as an open world, and Nikita said at some point that if you want open world, you should play Skyrim. then it was said that there was map to map travel, which was never followed up either, possibly because it is not feasible at all.
Now Arena is coming out and I have no idea how it was announced. After working on EFT for 7 years, having previously programmed Hired Ops and Contract Wars, it is once again an early access game that doesn't even get the basics right.
And with the experience of Tarkov development so far, I don't see any change in the next few years. Of course the tarkov community celebrates it, but only because they are so committed to EFT that even the shitty "The day Before" generated enormously high streaming numbers on twitzch.
In addition, there is now a flood of UA-cam videos that everyone thinks they have to say how bad the game is, but then stream it for ages.
Back to Arena:
Should it really be a competitive shooter? I can't imagine that it was advertised like that, given the beautiful status with which it came into the EA (again).
And should the EOD owners really get the game first, or were they just guaranteed that the EOD owners would get it for free (at some point)?
It's pretty bitter, but not really surprising that BSG has once again come up with something half-baked.

I hope they will add some customizability to the arena guns. I think its a waste that there is so much customize option in the main game and none in the arena. Not even like a flashider or foregrip or sight or stock or something simple like that. They could give points in each class how much u can spend on attachments to each classes gun so u cant meta mod them.
Honestly I think it is very fun, I was lucky and got access later the first day. I think it is fun but I agree with pretty much everything you said. I started in the assault tree using the SKS with US ammo. My K/d tanked becasue I couldnt kill anyone wearing armor, or the tanky bois with the M4 and class 4 armor lol. Getting 4 hits and 23 damage starts to hurt the soul. But I have played the game since 2017, and seeing how much it changed from then till now I am extremely excited to see where this goes. I just hope it dosent take 6 years. My biggest 2 complaints are matching based on skill and the tech trees. I've played for about 9 hours and I am currently 105k out of 152k xp till my next kit and thats almost entirly focusing on it besides the rare marksman try on woods. It just takes way too long, considering you get 7k ish xp for a win, Axel said it would take 3500 hours to unlock all of the presets. But they also said they planned on wiping with the main eft so i have no clue lol. I am hopeful though.
The aarp thing will be solved when they release the unranked mode. Play the good kits in rated and lvl up others in unranked
Yes, the kit system has its flaws. Maybe... if we progress in three "trees" - meds+nades, weapon+ammo, armor+helmet, and choose it before finding the game, not depending on the premade kits, so those kit-points could be useful? Dunno, but it needs a rework :D

Petition to have Deadly create a rating pizza graphic that shows up when giving the rating!
Pretty bang on, played agaisn't player with g36 when my team had sticks and stones felt out of place.
Not to mention the few raging hackers too. So far not worth the buy.
Wouldn't unranked be a potential fix for the progression issues? Allowing us to farm xp in unranked would mean that ranked games would be where you go once you've unlocked the kit you want
I'm really enjoying it but server queues are 20 mins atm!! 😭 Agree with the points! The Kedr having SP8 is so bad, it forces leg meta if you aren't a head sniper
you cant even leg meta because of the damage to blacked limbs nerf so you have to use 2 mags and the person just turns and one taps before you can finish the first mag.

@@mackieincsouthseayeah i just hopped on for the first time yesterday trying to use the kedr scout class against everybody else who is using level 5 armor and 100 round m4s. ill even flank enemies and they just turn with their pain killers on and slap me with one bullet. i really hope they fix something during wipe because this is ridiculous. im already down to about 700k roubles from all the losses (only like 6 matches with 5 losses)

The only thing that I noticed that was a bit annoying was the announcer being a bit too loud with no option to turn him down. It's quite distracting for me and I don't speak russian so I don't understand what he's saying anyways
Tarkov has made me want to learn Russian... My girlfriend speaks and reads the language and I have her translate while we play... lol.
They should "copy" the War Thunder research system... Basically you can select a vehicle to research and then you can use any vehicles that you got unlocked to gain XP to research it (lower level vehicles give less XP and vice versa)
I think this would be a great solution as well. Respects peoples time a bit more
As usual deadly has some sense, i have no idea how people are sour about this game, this has been one of the best bsg experiences in a long time, day one i just had short queue times and stable servers. the bones are there, the engine is there, the balance and othershit is stuff to work on. Some of the no lifers have too much time to complain.

It's such a hilarious slap in our faces that the damage and pen values of ammo are easily displayed in arena, but in regular tarkov we have to consult external resources. It's absurd that this isn't in the game, BSG just trolling us now...
that was my first thought as well when I hovered over my kit... I was in disbelief. It has to be easy to implement in the main game

THIS IS IN CLOSED BETA FOR A REASON. THEY NEED OUTSIDE OPINIONS. Especially on the way they did the loadout trees. There is no need for comments to shit on the beta for normal tarkov things. The RANKED accept button is also there for a reason. People like to queue and then go AFK for 10 mins. I appreciate that as someone who plays many ranked games that people are usually AFK and kicked only to return , if they even do, when the game is almost over and they vote to forfeit .
I agree that the system is not the problem, it is just not as clear as it should be to new players to click that button. I think UI just needs some work
I think a lot of this can be fixed with casual. You culd qeue by gear score in unranked and by arp in ranked.
Because Arena is 1:1 Tarkov when it comes to guns and armors it is a huge diferances between kits and that's mayby a problem. Mayby Arena shouldn't have 1:1 Tarkov stats. Like have armor, ammo, system but "balanced" for competitive play. And tarkov gunplay and health system on top of that. Also the competitive game mode SHOULD have predefined balanced kits that are available to everyone. Mayby there could be season system like you have "scav" loadout competitive season and then "full gear" comp season.

There has been so much negativity around Arena that makes me think some people really hate the humans behind BSG.
It's just the Closes Beta Testing, come on! it'll get much better.
Some feedback, they've clearly modeled the progression after games like world of tanks or warthunder where you get access to a particular kit, and you have to use that kit to advance to better kits. The disconnect seems to be that they haven't broken up matchmaking based on what level of kit you have. So if they said hey, if you're using a tier 1 kit (guard for example) then you'll only run into tier 1 and tier 2 kits at worst. Some of this is inevitably because of the player base, they'll be struggling to get enough people in the same tier to achieve that type of game frequency, but if they can pull it off I think it'd help the game a lot and reduce the amount of frustration you feel because you won't be dealing with huge power disparities as much, and it'll promote people trying lower tier kits more to expand their roster.
Maybe if they let more people play the game their would be more tier 1 and 2 kit players. As it is everyone is burning hours and gaining kits and stats so fast by the time I get to play the will have had 5 season tournament winners. This roll out is just screwed and Im tired of everyone already 100+ games in talking about how this and that is good or bad when 90% of the DAMNED community HASNT PLAYED!
But war thunder isn't like that. I can unlock a rank 3 or 4 soviet tank with any rank 3 soviet tank, it doesn't have to be the tank directly before it in the tech tree.

I said I don't care if I have to wait another year for an invite. I got invited on the first day. Wtf. The meds need to heal multiple limbs at a time. Whatever you're healing getting the most of the heals. I've had rounds were I tank a nade, than sit in a corner using a cheese kit to slowly get myself up. EOD is worth it. Tarkov tip
I really wanted to like Arena but I really can't believe they implemented the matchmaking without gear score into this first big testing period. Seems like such an obvious thing to miss, and it makes the overall player experience just feel terrible. Really looking forward to the PVE mode as well. I feel like my friends and I are gonna play the crap out of that one.

The bit about having to register on the website isn't true and I know that for a fact. I never registered and I got an email invite on the first day. One thing I did do however, and I'm not sure if this has any effect on beta chances, is that about 5 minutes before receiving my email I opened the battle state launcher for the first time in about two years. It could just be a coincidence but I have a feeling based on my experience that invites are only being sent to "active" accounts so just to be safe id suggest everyone run the launcher.

Must be nice to be able to play it. I've had EOD for 5 years and still haven't received an invite. By the time I get in, everyone is going to have max level kits. It's ridiculous.
I don’t have access yet either. I wouldn’t sweat it though, I would imagine arena will wipe with the base game in like 10 days or so.

Im in the same boat. Registered early on, and still waiting. Makes me feel like I should become a streamer just to get a chance to play.
Aside from load time criticisms, I'm mostly having fun with it.

My first time play feel is like shit.
There is huge preset diff.
But now like I am running with 52lv pmc gear and fucking entire enemy "SCAVS"
So so disappointed i dont get to make my own kit. Imagine getting atrachments unlocked for kills and wins
