My pastor always says that it's okay to have money as long as it doesn't have you. We are not a wealthy church but we do help others as much as we can. I love helping people!
I grew up in a Church that is now considered a "mega-church", and I choose to only attend smaller churches now. In my current church, there is so much fellowship, love, and sharing of the Gospel. Additionally, the church body also has numerous ministry opportunities in giving our time to others such as: helping the poor directly by partnering with a local Christian Food Bank where we can volunteer to feed and fellowship with the homeless. We assist anyone who struggles to find employment, and more. It is a wonderful feeling to give back, and to do as God commands us to do.
@boogotti1173 do you recall that Jesus Christ saved a woman from being stoned to death for committing adultery? Why would He do that if there shouldn't be a balance between mercy and justice? I get what you're trying to say but as much as someone can be too lenient about sin, you can also be too harsh about it too. Jesus Christ sat in the company of society's "outcasts" and "sinners". He helped a lot of people that society deemed "unworthy" at the time. You know who He didn't spend much time with? Those who unjustly and unfairly passed judgement on others. He rarely gave them the time of day, except to correct them. Jesus Christ makes it clear that we need to repent of sin. He also makes it very clear that He loves us. If you cannot make it clear that you want people to repent AND that you love them, you are not acting as a good example of Jesus Christ. You need both in order to encourage and inspire REAL change in others. You can hardly beat and batter others with words to force them into change. Good luck just telling them they are sinners and are going to hell.
In my life, I have observed that some Christians have tended to boast about their wealth and look down on others that didn’t have it. I believe that God wants to bless us in every way, but always stay humble and kind.
It happens all of the time. I'm worried because my husband is going into a line of work that could make a good chunk of money and I don't want us to become those kind people who show their wealth. I've seen too many women at church with Louis Vuitton bags (most of which cost anywhere around $1000 and more) and wondered who they could've fed or helped with that amount of money.
I@@youtubecommentator6023 you don't know how many people they are feeding. It's not up to you to judge how pepople manage their wealth, it's up to you to manage your heart, that's it.
You need to stop worrying about others and focus on yourself. If you spend your mental energy focusing on a sinful world you handicap yourself. Go do good things and stop worrying about what people think!
Dave and Jade, thank you for taking the time to talk to me about this. I will never forget this conversation and will continue the journey to build wealth and create a new family tree while still glorifiying GOD and know he provides it all.
@ElijahDavis41 I think you will find there are many many ways of interpreting the bible, hence why there are so many religions. Atleast Dave is a good human being.

If we are doing something to help him save us, then we are literally elevating ourselves to be equal with Him. He is God manifested in the flesh. Christ told the rich young ruler to sell all he had because it was a barrier to him being able to see and understand. It's not money itself that's evil or bad it's the love of it that's idolatry. Money is just a tool to get through this world and having a lot is a good thing if your priorities are right. Wished there were a lot more rich Christians because they know what money is for. It's for the preservation of your house and to be charitable with so that even G_D's enemies will praise Him because of you especially when they are in need. Who knows maybe even win some for His glory. Money takes a certain wisdom that I wished Christians had more of. It's stewardship. If your called to be generous then be generous. Nothing is lost when done for the Lord.
Give me neither poverty nor riches. For if I grow rich, I may deny and say, "Who is the Lord?" But if I am too poor I may steal and thus insult God's holy name. - Proverbs 30:8-9
This is the verse that came to my mind as soon as I saw the title. I haven't watched the video yet, but I'm guessing it's people defending money. Little do they know that you can't eat money but faith will sustain you.
They're both crosses I would say. There are many Saints who were dirt poor, but there were many that were Kings. Both come with their own set of temptations.
That’s really true. We can get off course as a result of listening to bad counsel. “In a multitude of counselors there is great wisdom”. There’s always someone who will be dismissive of our goals. Keep pressing towards Jesus!
I have had the incredible blessing to know several crazy wealthy STRONG Christians who were absolutely saved .... And absolutely crazy wealthy..... And I had the pleasure of seeing how God used them to do truly miraculous things with that wealth..... "generous" could NEVER even to begin to describe. They gave away things and money that most people never knew about and in sizes that very few people were ever permitted to know. It was humbling and awe inspiring all at once.
Job was the wealthiest man in the region. In Acts, the believers met in each other's houses, showing that they owned houses. Some sold them, but most evidently did not, and they used those houses as a blessing. In Proverbs 13:22, "a good man leaves an inheritance for his children's children," which means he's wealthy - and is called a "good" man. Wealth is wrong only when it becomes an idol and is more important to you than serving God and others. Using wealth to support missions, give to others, etc. is something we see in the Bible as a good thing.
Thank you! You got it! God wants us to be abundant, cultivate abundance and be a good steward of abundance he gives us! Abundance includes financial. Idk why ppl can’t get it!
Being rich and hoarding wealth or spending money on things you don't really need or on luxury when there are poor people among us is very much against Jesus' teachings. There's no way around that.
Thank you Mr.Ramsey, I’m first gen in America, my siblings and I attended college / my parents never did - we come from a very poor background in Honduras and I see this mindset instilled in my parents still - often talking down on the rich and what not. . . My dad worked hard to get us here in America - I pray I see the day where I can obtain financial freedom and give back to him, and the poor. God bless.

The Bible says that it is the LOVE of money (not money) that's the root of all evil. When you take the TEXT out of the CONTEXT, you leave behind a CON. This is why so many Christians have been conned into wrong believing. Dave is right.
According to google, it’s the root of all KINDS of evil, not the root of all evil. Wouldn’t make sense for money to be the root of all evil because Eve bit the Apple before money was invented, I think

@@adr3naline23I want to hold my breath on the "coming back to destroy it all" idea. Destroying it all has nothing to do with it anyhow. I thought Jesus was coming back to bring people to heaven.
I also was in this situation, with debts and little money. It took years for God to make me understand, actually understand, that money is not the root of all evil, but LOVE of money. He showed me exactly what Ramsey said, how can you help around you if you don't have the money to even help yourself? I had a friend who had no money, but she needed money to pay for her mama's funeral. I went into debt for her because I wanted to help her. And that was a clicking moment. I wasn't free to help anyone because I was a slave to money. Not because I had so much money, but because I had none of it. So many other clicking moments. How can you work for the kingdom if you don't have the tools? And money is certainly a tool.
I mostly agree with Dave except when he said poor people don’t feed people. Poor people are often the most generous because they know it feels to struggle.
Many poor people may have generous hearts and give of what they have but I think he means they don't have the means to feed the poor in large quantities. It's the rich who do. But of course all things are possible to him who believes.
He was making a point about proportion, obviously. Yes, one poor person can cooks a little extra and maybe feed 1-2 other poor people, but not much more than that and not for very long. Plus, in American anymore there really isn't any such thing as "poor people" unless you're on drugs or have a mental illness: anyone willing to live by a very simple set of expectations like don't do drugs and be a decent person can find food, shelter, clothing, and utilities: all the basics are covered. And have you noticed a lot of "poor people" in the USA aren't exactly skinny? Many are obese because they spend their food stamps on highly processed food and easy to fix stuff that has little nutritional value but tons of calories. It's hard to argue that there's a starvation problem in the USA, even with so-called "food deserts" which really just means you might have to travel 5 miles to get fresh food. Oh the horror! Our ancestors who walked 20 miles a day thought nothing of it, but today it's a violation of your Constitutional Rights if someone doesn't deposit fresh fruit and veggies on your door step.... anyway, rant over. The point is Dave's talking about feeding hundreds and thousands of people in countries where people literally starve to death if no rich person steps in. The poor aren't sending $10,000 a month to a town in the Philippine to feed 500 people.
Jesus was the poorest no home and barely any money, and feed thousands in one sitting. Many rich people can not manage that. Exception to Ramsey saying.
Ys but that isn’t what he means… he’s talking about feeding the large populations of poor.. it takes loads of money to do it so it isn’t the poor that feeds the poor.. yes it is true that the poor are usually the most generous and will feed those in front of of them.. but they don’t feeds thousands of people starving at once…

I was drowning in debt for years and thought like they did about money. I'm glad to say we followed Dave's advice and will be debt-free next year. The one thing that would always trouble me was that my wife and I couldn't help anyone because of making foolish choices with His resources. God put it on our hearts to give, but we couldn't. The best comment you just made, "money is just a tool to do God's work". Those of us who live in the USA have the ability to take our God given ambition and make that profitable and then have the ability to bless others. (really it blesses us more though. I love how God works...)
This was the single most important mindset shift that helped me when I first found Dave 6 years ago; that I wouldn't be doing something wrong, evil and/or selfish by striving for better finances.. sounds so odd saying that now but it was a game changer if you've been subjected to the wrong echo chambers growing up. Thank you Dave! You're not alone, Alessia! God bless you :)
It's a parable about using the gifts (talents) that GOD gives us.... Not about investing money. That's why it used the word "talents" and not "money". But carnally minded people will hear "money" in this scripture because that's where their mind is. "Where your treasure is their will your heart be also" (Mat 6:21). For to be carnally minded is death but to be spiritually minded is life and peace (Rom 8:6-8). The parable about the master, the servants and the talents was about bearing fruit using the gifts (talents) that GOD gives us and those who use their gifts (talents)and bear fruit, GOD will give those servants more. But to those who don't use their gift/gifts (talents) but make excuses as to why they didn't use them, GOD will take their gifts (talents) away.
Think the ‘talents’ in this parable can represent the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We are instructed to take this Gospel and share it with others in order that people would hear and believe and the Kingdom of Jesus might increase. This parable shows us that to receive the gift of the Gospel and simply hide it, is wrong. Not about materialism...
@@jasonrodgers9063 Basically. And I'm not saying it's the same for everyone, but a lot of those same people are poor because of the poor life choices they made. What God makes us stewards of he will hold us accountable for how responsible we were with it and there will be consequences both good and bad depending on how we administered it.
I would like to add that "the eye of the needle" was the name of a very small gate to the city where the Camels had to get down on their knees and they had to remove all the baggage from the cammel. We just think of the eye of the needle as an actual needle.
That doesn't sound very "impossible"; if you take that analogy it would follow that it is possible for mankind to save themselves. It is the very same people who misquote 1st Timothy 6:10. the passage reads: "...For the love of money is the root of all evil..." Not the commonly used "Money is the root of all evil". The wording is so important. Please dont let people guilt trip you into poverty.
This is a great video. Where I'm still confused is about how we determine where the line between the the love of money and having greed with wealth lies. Because technically we could all "provide" for ourselves and our families on less than many of us spend, but let's be real, we mostly all like to have some niceties, live in the nicest area we can afford, and have sooome toys. Yet it could be argued that there's still a surplus there that could be used to help the poor. Not saying I want to be a monk and have just the bare essentials or that we should all move to poorer areas to have more money freed up to give, but still having a hard time feeling like I can buy things/do these things with a totally clear conscious.
Ecclesiastes 5:19 "Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God."
I think the line can be drawn at Loving God. If you love God you will follow him. If you love money you will sacrifice and do anything for it, which would make it your god. If you will give up your morals, not take care of your family, and do anything unethical to get money then you Def love it. My thoughts.
You can't provide for your family for the rest of their lives if you don't have great wealth saved up and at least somewhat disciplined spending. Buying things with the intent to show people that you are wealthy would have nothing to do with taking care of your family. That may not cover everything but that's a good start to a boundary. The wealth is important because you can't take care of your family if you become disabled or you die early and end up not being able to work.
@@solck7286you can apply rules that are very good advice that are unrelated to faith in god also. Not everyone sees the world through the lens of a believer. Yet, they still need good advice to live by.

You mention path, it literally says the word of the Lord is a lamp onto my feet, and a light unto my path. Then you see in John one Jesus is the Word made flesh, BUT in John 14 he says it’s better that he goes to heaven to be our advocate before the father so the Holy Spirit can be the one who enlightened us inside us. That said, do not neglect the gathering with other believers, that is something Scripture says, yes we are to pray that the Holy Spirit in lightens us to the scripture and we don’t have to believe everything everyone says, but we do have to keep being iron to others sharpening them and letting them sharpen us. Keep in physical community, even Jesus came in the flesh and lived among us. We can handle being among all types of people seeking God too.
Money is a tool that can be used for evil or for good. It can be used to bless or oppress. I now agree with Dave on this. You cannot help anyone else nor thrive when you are barely surviving (financially or otherwise) yourself.

Spot on biblical exposition, Dave! As I was listening, I was getting ready to write a comment saying exactly what you just said. But you spared me the effort. 😂 Thanks!
The simplest trick is to give 10% to the church before you become wealthy. This helps keep your priorities aligned. If you don't give when you are poor, you probably won't give when you are rich.
Facts! Tithe and offerings, the Bible says And going through your trials and tribulations that God puts us through, which trains us not to walk in lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride of life
This is a terrible idea. Churches are tax-exempt and a lot of church leaders are p3d0s, if not straight up scam artists preying on scared people. Don't donate to churches. God does not give a damn if you give 10% of your money to a scam artist. No matter how much money you have, you leave it all when you die. People misinterpret the “camel through the eye of a needle” verse all the time. It really has nothing to do with money and everything to do with status. The Jews of Jesus’ time believed that if you were rich, God was looking favorably on you as a person. The result was that the rich held their status in such high regard that they became prideful and arrogant to the less fortunate around them. It takes humility and repentance to reach heaven. Those who are filled with pride won’t make it there, because they’ll be too invested in themselves to repent for their faults.
Too much pride to humble themselves to believe on Jesus as their savior. The world says "seeing is believing", God says, Believe and then he will reveal himself to you(so true).
Since camels were heavily loaded with goods and riders, they would need to be un-loaded in order to pass through the gateway of the city aka the eye of a needle. Therefore, the analogy is that a rich man would have to similarly unload his material possessions in order to enter heaven. Doesn't mean having money is wrong. Just that this man loved his possessions and wasn't willing to put Jesus first.
I think the eye of the needle is referred to the side door in a walled city that stays open at night when the main gates are closed. A camel would have to be unloaded then pushed through to get through these small doors.
This is a myth. All Christian archeologists agree, The smaller door in a gateway, was not called the "eye of the needle," and there never was a gateway called "the eye of the needle" in Jerusalem.

@@josephcernansky1794 Of course not.
to become saved we "obey" God by believing on the Son.
If we are doing something to help him save us, then we are literally elevating ourselves to be equal with Him. He is God manifested in the flesh. He did the deeds of living a perfect, sinless life and dying on the cross to atone for our sin debt. Then said, It is finished.
We trust that he says he is who he says he is, and in what he did.
We receive the holy spirit.
THEN we "work" to follow him obeying his ways and do our best not sinning with His help. We will never be perfect though(hence why we need Jesus imputed righteousness). Of most importance in our being a servant of his is spreading the gospel.

What a ridiculous statement.

You can’t do much for yourself, let alone anyone else when you’re poor.
This pride in being poor confounds me. Jesus wants you to be self sufficient and able to give charity. You can't do that when you're a charity case.

@@stephengamber7000probably got taxed into oblivion by the Government and then inflation got him 😂
Yeah hard workers for advancing the kingdom of God. Not working hard for money,
It's a parable about using the gifts (talents) that GOD gives us....

Don’t listen to people’s misinterpretations of the Bible but create your own misinterpretations by following your own path. Totally makes sense
Follow Jesus
Does the Bible say to follow your own path tho?
SHEEEESH PASTOR RAMSEY SLAYIN IT!!!!
Money is a tool that can be used for evil or for good. It can be used to bless or oppress. I now agree with Dave on this. You cannot help anyone else nor thrive when you are barely surviving (financially or otherwise) yourself.
2 Corinthians 9:8
[8] God can bless you with everything you need, and you will always have more than enough to do all kinds of good things for others.
100% NAILED IT. Context is everything, great job, Dave on getting to the precept of the text!
Spot on biblical exposition, Dave!
As I was listening, I was getting ready to write a comment saying exactly what you just said. But you spared me the effort. 😂
Thanks!
I appreciate everything in the answer. There’s so much in it I have to listen to it again. I will read the book Dave mentioned.
I agree! Now that I am on baby steps 4 & 6, it’s so easy to be generous since I have a financial foundation. ❤
The simplest trick is to give 10% to the church before you become wealthy. This helps keep your priorities aligned. If you don't give when you are poor, you probably won't give when you are rich.
Facts!
Tithe and offerings, the Bible says
And going through your trials and tribulations that God puts us through, which trains us not to walk in lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride of life
This is a terrible idea. Churches are tax-exempt and a lot of church leaders are p3d0s, if not straight up scam artists preying on scared people. Don't donate to churches. God does not give a damn if you give 10% of your money to a scam artist. No matter how much money you have, you leave it all when you die. And it's not like you aren't "giving" your money out and sitting on a 100M pile of cash. It is invested in companies that employ others. Your money trickles down. Just don't use your money to do bad stuff.
What a scam. The church teaches that you need to give money to them in order to get to heaven? Sounds like a racket to me.
@@jakecosenza69Corruot church used to demand money by using out of context scripture and manipulating the poor in order to get rich, I will not deny that. They were wrong and went against God in every way. The giving of money to church however stays and it helps keep churches open and fund foundations with which the church works with. Christians are meant to give to all who are in need.
@@jakecosenza69no that’s actually not what it teaches. Maybe instead of trying to put words in the Bible’s mouth you should just stay quiet when you have no idea what you are talking about.
Just another example of you can interpret "the Bible " however you want.
Amen. Preach it.
Preach it! Beloved, I wish above all that you prosper and be in health!!
OMG this Dave Ramsey guy handles all topics so well! God bless him
Since camels were heavily loaded with goods and riders, they would need to be un-loaded in order to pass through the gateway of the city aka the eye of a needle. Therefore, the analogy is that a rich man would have to similarly unload his material possessions in order to enter heaven. Doesn't mean having money is wrong. Just that this man loved his possessions and wasn't willing to put Jesus first.
Thank you!! That’s it!! Money isn’t evil. It’s just a tool! It’s when we choose money over God is the when the issues come!
Let's NOT Forget that we are ALREADY RICH Beyond our Comprehension because we have JESUS CHRIST as our LORD and SAVIOR!!! Wealth is FLEETING, PER THE WORD!!! It is about WHERE your TRUST IS, is it in your Money OR in The SAVING WORK of JESUS CHRIST??!!! TRUTH!!! And YES, Our Money is NOT OUR OWN, it is a GIFT FROM JESUS, Let's NOT Forget THAT!!
Im convinced too many Christian’s don’t really read their bibles…
Proverbs 21:20 NLT: The wise have wealth and luxury, but fools spend whatever they get.
wise have wealth and luxury. how they get wise? Fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom!
Hallelujah wisdom ❤breaking down the scripture for all
Concept can be applied for non believers and believers
Dave did a great job explaining that passage in context!
I always wondered if the rich young ruler did choose Christ in the end.
He went from this encounter sorrowful, but that does not prevent him from pondering and prayer to a change of heart.
I know that I often take multiple teachings to learn a lesson and the scriptures only account for this 1 meeting. They dont record the rest of his story.
He died and that was the end of it. He didnt go to heaven or hell because those dont exist and this person likely didnt either as the story was made up.
We don't know. But if he was sorrowful he would have had some belief in Christ.
Its not a sin to be wealthy its a sin to be greedy and or worship money
The ultra wealthy are greedy though. Even the stock market is motivated by fear and greed.
Yes hence the 'LOVE' of money that the bible mentions. Money itself isn't an issue.
@@EsiriE Sounds like cope to me. If you are greedy then just own it. Stop trying to hide behind being righteous. If you follow Jesus, it is clear that he didn't give two shits about money of any kind.
@@matthewphillips5483 no, you’re biblically illiterate. You “religious” people think poverty is soo righteous and wealth is a sin and that’s fake humility
@@matthewphillips5483 the bible discusses money in great detail.
As a person who was raised Catholic/Christian but now considers himself to be a non-believer, I can say that people using scriptures like a hammer against others is both one of the most common things you'll encounter in organized religions, and one of the main reasons people leave them.
@TJ-rf1xl So you're are saying that using scriptures should not be done by christians? Huh?
@@Sheryl777scripture shouldn't be weaponized in order to make your point. I would put it that way.
I suppose it depends on the context in which it is used. It should inspire people and not be used to beat them into submission. (I don't know who would submit because they lost an argument anyhow)
@@jamisojo 👍 Agree that scripture shouldn't be used to beat people into submission! I post scriptures because first of all I believe in the scriptures, and second, I want people to know that being rich (alone) will not keep them out of heaven (as so many seem to believe when we read the comments). No, I am not rich, as people in the USA think of "rich", but I am rich when compared to many other people around the world, which proves that what we may think of as "middle class" in the US, people in much poorer countries would think of as being rich.
You should still read Scriptures. Don't let hypocrites come between you and Jesus
@@georgewagner7787it is all about Jesus is God and what He did. Don't focus on other people(professed "c hristians). Focus on Christ.
This was a great question and I really appreciate the answer.
Love Dave Ramsey. Solid teaching and doctrine.
It’s not a sin to be rich. Rather it’s what you do with the money God has blessed you with. Christians can be jealous and judgmental about people who have money.
Sometimes the Christians are the ones with the money.
I guess I would just say people in general can be jealous of other people. Your faith identification doesn't make you a good or bad person in and of itself.
When my mother says “god will provide for me”. I want to scream. She’s forcing me to fund her retirement because she’s irresponsible
It’s not fair that she supports missionaries and donates her money to the church when she doesn’t have it. I resent her, there is no honor in that
I wouldn't give her a dime if that is how she feels.
Release yourself from that silly guilt. Unless she is unwell in the head. If that is the case you might be able to get power over her finances.
You are correct; this behavior is not biblical.
My mother used to say: “the Lord helps those who help themselves”.
Wow. I thought this message was from me it’s so similar to my situation!
My mom had more than I do due to my illness. She donated every month to different causes. But as she got older, I started calling the political ones and ones that overpay CEOs and pretending to be her to take her off the mailing list.
It’s not wrong to build wealth. Building wealth and helping others is doing God’s work.
Joel Osteen goes afther there money heard he puts money behind the church walls they found it fake
It amazes me that some people are always in the free line, asking to borrow money or just asking someone else for money, but they never go to people who's struggling like them, instead they go to people who have discipline themselves to obtain wealth on some level and then say they are evil and greedy because they are wealthy!
Thank you so much!
That was exactly what I was struggling with and thinking about today
The widows mite was to highlight the evils of a church that endocrinstes the poor into thinking they csn buy thier way into heaven. At least thats how ive interpret that parable
Or Jesus rebuking the leaders for letting the widow give her last bit of money instead of taking care of her.
@@jackiechoate6163yes. Often this aspect gets overlooked. Unfortunately its not taught in this manner.
Amen. Thank you, Dave, for bringing clarity to this biblical doctrine on wealth.
I'm not a Christian but I love the perspective that we don't actually own our wealth/possessions, but we are managing it for God.
That's not a Dave saying, he got that straight out of the Bible!
Dave knows everything, even details about the situation in Haïti. I am impressed every time.
I like that point about saving the children. That is very true. I appreciate the teaching.
As a Christian, I'm so tired of Christians who are bums. I've also had conversations with Christians who have said because I want to be successful, somehow that's an idol.
❤
You should talk to fewer of the dumb Christians.
Even better, let's just have you talk to fewer dumb people. Christian or otherwise. I'm sorry if these are your family members.
It is a wonderful thing to isolate yourself from fools. I highly recommend it.
I might start with getting some separation from anyone who says "something is an idol' in a biblical sense. That is a weird thing to say that should be kept at church and possibly at home. It shouldn't be used to help someone in life.
Depends on how you are defining success.
@@jamisojo Yeah it's hard to take someone seriously that says that. It tells me they don't understand what idols are. They're ANYTHING that you put ahead of God in your heart. That's not a specific thing and you can have something as an idol, but then realize it, put God first and it's no longer an idol.
It’s funny when people don’t seem to realize what the difference between being well off and actually being rich is.
Some (I didn't say all) of the poor people in the USA are rich compared to certain people in various other countries. They would say many of our poor here in this country are rich compared to them, and in a sense, that is true.
Yes. It is interesting, but the words are often used interchangeably.
