I’m a RN, I chose a small community college and paid 2k a semester.. total 8k. My Bachelors I took online while working and cost me 7k. It does not matter where you graduate, I never been asked by employers. I do travel nursing in many hospitals and you can’t tell what school anyone went to. If you need it for longer there is a $2000 tax credit which is good forever. You can't claim both, but it saves some money. Just make sure to keep your receipts for text books. @Grimmy Rippy No, they absolutely should not have. Trying to predict what degrees are going to have the best ROI a minimum of 5 years down the line is a fool's errand. You simply don't know what that's going to be, a job that appears to pay well now may well see an oversupply of applicants several years down the road.
What's more, with a few exceptions, employers really don't care much about what your degree is in. Sure, for things like legal or medical work there may be licensing requirements that dictate what sort of education that applicant needs, but most jobs aren't like that.

The other 40 either dropped out (majority) or are held back at least 1 term (about 10 or so people). No one who made it this far worked full time, and everyone who worked full time is either gone or held back significantly. Moral of the story: if you think you're going to work full time while in nursing school, you've got a huge percent chance of failing. And you add a monthly out go for a $100k student loan debt it restricts you to the point of waiting until you are older and making that above average income to be able to start chucking away at that debt. That's without sacrificing and following the baby steps.

This was one of my favorite clips in a long time on the show. I started listing to Dave in about 2014. I had just graduated from university and I started to think what I should do with the money from my first "real" job. I had 42k in student loan debt and I made 24k at the time (I was only an intern and that went up significantly 2 years later). My wife made about 20k. Because I started listening to Dave, we were able to pay off our student loans in just under 2 years through deep sacrifice. Both of us made 10-12 bucks an hour the whole time too.
One thing that I like about Dave is that he believes in his viewers. He says "you can do this" and nowadays you hear people that want student loan forgiveness because they THINK they can't pay the loans off. All my friends that were dining out in restaurants, going on vacation, and having a great time despite having students loans would benefit from the loan forgiveness. I, however, would not get those 2 years of deep sacrifice back (which believe me were pretty much 2 years of lost life). Forgiveness punishes the people who lost life to do what pretty much everyone could do if they had discipline. We made income you could make at friggin Walmart at the time and still got it done. You can do it too!
I wish I would have discovered Dave before I got all that debt, but he helped me clean it up. Because of him, and our own hard work, she is now a stay at home mom and we have no debt. Thanks Dave!

I’m helping out my fellow American buy getting rid of something he or she no longer needs and helping me progress. But again, going into debt to buy stuff IS NOT THE SAME as going into debt to receive a necessary, legitimate education. @@SmallSpoonBrigade Getting a degree by itself only shows you spent the time, energy and money and carried through. In many cases that don’t require special background and education, that’s sufficient, but in reality, such a role doesn’t require any post-high school formal education, either, so supply and demand weigh heavily into that: many that piece of paper is only useful to open up many potential employers to hiring you.
Now, if you get yourself educated in STEM or something else that does require a degree, or even are self-taught (some things are more viable than others) supply and demand makes you potentially much more valuable, assuming you don’t choose poorly.
Gender studies degrees only have as much value as the number of careers and their jobs that are available to use that particular training, which really devolves down to a role where you’re preaching to the choir. But, most of those roles are purely in academia, so your teachers are your competition, so how’s that working out? For most, that’s a liability instead of a degree: a worthwhile degree starts out as an asset and appreciates with time and effort, having a good ROI. The only people that can afford to consider a gender studies degree are those that don’t need to earn a living in the first place. If they can’t pay for the entire expenses out of pocket before or as they take it, they won’t be able to afford to pay off the school loans, because their best bet will be working as a barista and telling people “I’ve got this gender studies degree, I’m so educated, let’s talk while I make your drink!” (And of course, many people just want their drink ASAP, instead of waiting to speak to a sap).

As a 32-year-old, with some college debt, I completely disagree with this life advice. The healthcare industry, beginning at the education level, is corrupted and in order to get through school (especially to someone with a disability), the advice I was given the first week of Nursing was, “you SHOULD NOT work while you’re in school.” I laughed out loud. They had no concept of reality. You have to work unless you’re born from privilege. I’m proud to be raised with the immigrant mentality of “if I don’t work, I don’t eat.” These hosts, and yes, I know they don’t advocate debt (no sane person does), have a limited scope of reality. IN THE REAL WORLD, you have to take on some debt. Dave never condemns mortgages but debt is debt. I could argue that investing in education is more valuable than a house (cough 2008 financial crisis cough) especially since a house is a money pit. But I digress, these hosts say it’s proven but debt regret, but it’s not. If I was able to obtain a $50,000 loan to take care of school and living expenses, I would have my degree by now AND IT WOULD HAVE BEEN PAID OFF. Critics will argue that I’m the exception, or worse, Darwinisticly saying that I’m undeserving of bettering my life because ‘survival of the fittest’ and I’m just not ‘fit enough.’ I’ve called into Christian-based radio shows asking for Biblical advice and nope it’s basically the same as the Anti-theist or anti-love and redemption above. My advice: refuse to settle and keep pushing because “as long as I breathe, I hope,” and don’t settle for advice from those who have not gone through you’re experiences or want to invest in you or your vision personally or professionally. You are nothing to them but a wisp of wind which may bring them some momentary satisfaction emotionally or financially. I don’t believe in a God that gives intelligence to poor people and require them to legalistically follow laws that don’t benefit their vision of bettering this pathetic world. I wouldn’t dare limit God to that horrific box.

I completely agree that you should try and steer your kids towards a successful degree, but if you end up with another kid who goes your route and gets college paid for and your other kid does not see a dime of the "college fund" because they didn't do what you wanted then the second kid will resent you and likely never speak with you again.
I know a few sets of parents that ended up this way, and are still confused why their kid will never speak to them again.
Once they are 18 they can make their own mistakes and decisions. Punishing one of your adult children financially because they didn't get the degree you wanted is abusve, manipulative, and any family therapist would have a lot of very loud words for you if this is the hole you decide to die in.
My kids are getting a set amount each, both identical, and what they do with it is their business not mine. If one decides that they don't want to go to college they'll get a lump sum payout. If the other wants to waste it on an underwater basket weaving degree that's their decision and the only part I play in it is signing the checks (up to total amount saved, no more no less). I won't resent either of them for their decisions, and I refuse to place such massive conditions on my parenting techniques. I might be a upset with them if they put themself in a bad financial situation, but raising your kids separately results in a broken family and I would die before single handedly destroying a relationship with one of my kids because I withheld a labeled college fund that I designated for their college degree.

My youngest daughter is currently in nursing school for her RN at the local community college. She already got her Associate of Science there - all cash flowed thus far. And we have the cash to pay for the rest of it. She's going to do her BSN on line - it's a 6-10 month on line program, again for cash. She's coming out of this with ZERO college debt. The hospital she worked at for a couple years as a PCT said they don't care if you get the degree at the community college. It just doesn't matter where the degree is from - what does matter is how much debt you carry when its over.

I quit my social work job 12 years ago and went to a second degree accelerated BSN program. It cost me 28k in loans (state school). Completed the program in one year and started a job making double the salary day one of being a nurse. It was a worthwhile investment to me. Cash-flowing my Master’s Degree in Nursing using hospital money reimbursement and savings. The costs for essential programs in nursing and medicine are too high. Yes you can get an associates but jobs that hire at that level are becoming more and more rare.

Go to the community college nearby, find a job, have them pay for your bachelors and serve them the years back. End up with a BSN and a job with no debt. ✅
Also, become a CNA, tech, or MA to see if nursing is for you. Don’t just do it for job stability and money. You need to love it.
