Truth Matters? John MacArthur and Justin Peters Speak at the Ark Encounter: My Thoughts

  • Last weekend Ken Ham's Ark Encounter in Kentucky hosted the 2022 Truth Matters conference conducted by John MacArthur's ministry. Among the speakers were MacArthur, Phil Johnson, and Justin Peters, all of whom have a history of bashing Charismatics and Charismatic theology. I thought the Charismatic community might like to know the kind of events Ken Ham is hosting at his attraction.

One of my friends is convinced Justin Peters has a deep rooted resentment toward all this word of faith stuff simply because it didn't work for him and received no healing for his own disability

Justin denies it but I don't think there's any question that his views have been skewed by virtue of his experiences. I think he just concluded that all faith healers are charlatans and therefore the teaching that they're promoting is heresy.

I agree also. He lacks any sense of empathy or evidence of compassion. If he was so right about his misguided submissions then you would expect a reaching out in love and appeals for intercessionary prayer for these “weird” Charismatics. There is none at all. I do believe that his “talent” for finger pointing & criticism is one the Lord would be quite happy on this occasion if he buried it!

My Dad and I have begun a podcast series dealing with the arguments of all of these folks who say they believe sola scriptura but have no scriptural basis for cessationism. They set up the WOF and NAR as a straw man and knock it over. Any fool realizes that Benny Hinn, Kenneth Copeland and others are charlatans. That isn't the issue at hand. The question is "should the Holy Spirit still work today in the body of Christ through ALL of the spiritual gifts (as set forth, for example, in 1 Corinthians 12)". The answer to this question, is YES. There is no biblical evidence to the contrary. This is what we will prove through our series. We will deal point by point with all of their arguments. These people don't know their Bibles, are intellectually dishonest and downright illogical. If you would like to follow along, the link is below.

I'm appalled on hearing Justin saying that Charismatics are not Christians. As for me, if it wasn't for the preaching of a Charismatic preacher about the Gospel of Jesus Christ I would still be a lost sinner and who knows I might have end up in hell. Does anyone know if Ken Hamm is a cessationist?
I ask because I've seen his defense of young earth creationism, and his point always seems to rest on, "The plain reading of the text". He mentions it over and over. And yet the plain reading of the text is that the gifts of the Spirit are still in operation today. I'm unsure how he is jumping through the mental hoops in order to hold both of those positions. Again, assuming he is a cessationist.

You should consider focusing on this type of content. It's soooo needed.
It's supee trendy to be a calvinist/cessationist and the word "charismatic" is now, automatically associated with carelessness and dishonesty.
I went after new age theology at around 16. Partly because I was hearing that the things I was experiencing(mainly dreams) and expecting "didn't happen".
Whenever I would talk to Christians,(I wasn't a Christian at the time, but didn't know it), they wouldn't believe me and had no way to relate. Even discussing answered prayers would get me looks.
At the time, I had hardly any bible knowledge, but if I had just read it for myself, I would have learned that my experiences did align with scripture.
Sound doctrine is extremely important to me. The word of God is my ultimate authority. Even though I don't consider myself reformed, I belong to a reformed church because I love their love for the word, even if we disagree on certain interpretation.
But it's getting a little difficult for me. I'm now at the point where I don't really even want them to pray for me because I don't believe they actually expect answers.
I became a disgusting monster while in the new age. Literally, almost a Ted Bundy. God saved me RIGHT before I hurt someone at the age of 30. The experiences I've had while in new age did not align with scripture and I've completed disregarded them. I'm convinced they were demonic.
Now, to avoid the insane amount of deception, I hold on to the word like it's a floating device in the middle of the ocean.
I'm often accused of being obsessed or studying too hard. But I know what can happen to a person when they are not grounded by God's word. I love it and so thankful for the gift he's provided.
It's because of His Word that I believe in the miraculous.. Because I love truth, I listen to cessationist arguments on a regular basis, but they often use philosophical reasoning, instead of scripture.
Also, thank you so much for addressing Kat Kerr and listing grounded charismatic I can look into. I don't know of many, which makes this theological position feel really lonely.
Maybe you could do a video listing sound charismatics ❤️

@ChristianRebel There is actually a scholarly work, I can get the Phd who did the research and published it but it goes through History and documents how the supernatural was NOT specific to Christianity but was widespread across multiple religions. He then documents HEALINGS that over the past 2 decades from around the world. The bulk of them he documents among the Christian faith. But I think the real danger here with this CESSATION baloney is 1. If we are training ourselves to see SUPERNATURAL ACTS as CONFIRMATION of the DIVINE PRESENCE of CHRIST then 2. We are setting ourselves up to be deceived. The Anti-Christ and the false prophet come with LYING WONDERS and SUPERNATURAL ACTS. The Supernatural doesn't mean you're necessarily an agent of the kingdom of God. In fact? It has NEVER MEANT that. It CAN mean that. It doesn't always mean that. Agents of Christ come preaching the GOSPEL of CHRIST and ACTS follow the preaching of the Word.

@ChristianRebel "The "objective believer" also defends that miracles are for today and charismatic view" --- Im pointing out that those who believe this are unaware of history. The Supernatural is all over world history. Its always been here. To believe that the Spirt of God would retreat from the field of the Supernatural in light of the un-relenting supernatural that has always been present and is STILL present is ludicrous. I guess maybe Im pointing out that this subject has a higher elevation from which it can be viewed. The ancient Greeks recorded different ways in which they could receive healing from their gods. Same across the ancient world. Same with voo-doo which is really just witchcraft. To believe God would abandon the field of the supernatural is the 'belief' that God SHARES GLORY with lesser gods. We know He doesn't.

What extent do you believe something can be believed for?? In other words where is the line?
For a long time I've really liked Andrew Wommacks view that we cannot appropriate by faith something that God did not provide to us by grace.
I heard once of a Rhema student believing God for Kenneth Hagins pickup truck. ROFL. Now why it had to be his specific truck I don't know. There are other stories like people believing for other people's wives etcetera.

      @thetruthchannel349 2 роки тому

I view Young Creationism as naive, simplistic and contorted as I view Old Earth. There's a reason why theres so much contradictory data across the spectrum. You can find things that indicate a Young Earth. You can find things that indicate an ancient earth. I think the closest we can get to even a hopeful, ignorant guess is by understanding that Biblical texts as well as Hundreds of ancient cultures as well as 600 Native American traditions teach of MULTI-AGES. What does that mean exactly? I barely have a clue. It could mean so many different things. For, ex. in the Zulu tradition that is over 5,000 years old they also teach this but in their version an earth change occurs that is absolutely devastating and almost kills everything on earth ends a Golden age. The moon is moved here by 2 brothers whos appearance resemble the fish-men in the Greek mythos (which was the basis of modern evolution as these Apkallu Greek fish men rise out of the sea) so they can 'Watch' after mankind. So, this begins a new age. I think Cosmology is so more exotic than we can imagine it will absolutely blow our minds when we're shown where we've been living and all the changes that have occurred for one reason or another. Maybe we'll feel quite bored and embarrassed for measuring data by simply how old this thing is vs how old that thing is.

@@thetruthchannel349 My issue with young-earth creationism is their insistence on the Bible's scientific accuracy in Genesis 1-11. The Church fathers are very clear that we are not to interpret Genesi 1 & 2 as exactly how God created everything. Whatever God did, it is beyond our comprehension. This also means that I have a problem with old-earth creationists and theistic evolutionists that try to insert their scientific and philosophical opinions concerning the origin of the earth into the text. Just THAT HE DID. and so B. Genesis neither opposes or supposes Evolution. I further point out that MY problem with evolution isn't Biblical it's scientific. After 150 years it shouldn't still have enough holes to drive an Imperial fleet through from a galaxy far and away. I agree that we're missing such HUGE pieces in our history that what we DO have and what we can ACCOUNT for only deepens the mystery and expands our ignorance. When that happens Ive learned that its usually because you have all these little pieces and you're missing the bigger pieces that anchor those smaller ones that seem to be all you have left.*

Hebrew Cosmology is pretty much the same as other cosmologies and oddly enough its even closer to the ancient Chinese Cosmology than even the Enuma Elish. Theres a lot of alliterations and symbols that are present in the Cosmology that take you right up to Revelation and it seems to interlock with Eschatology. For ex. 'the sea' in Cosmology its the same as the Abzu or the abyss and is a chaos symbol representing the original Rebels and the results of what they did against God and Creation. Jesus walks 'on the sea.' That is symbolic of Christ's dominance and victory over them. Then later in Rev. 'and there was no more sea.' Well, thats not talking about water. Its talking about Chaos, Spiritual darkness, etc. There also seems to be a connection with the Hebrew Creation myth and the erecting of the Temple, etc. They clearly knew that 3,000 years ago. We cant apply 19th century Naturalism to Hyper-physical realities. I feel like a stupid amateur even calling it that. What else do ya call it? What else can ya call it? Paul just called it 'the air.' He didn't know what to call it either. lol.*

I think you guys are talking past each other. There IS a teaching that has gone around in charismatic circles that encourages people to turn off their minds (Rodney Howard Browne was big on that) and many of the man types (Heidie Baker I believe) I can't remember all the people individually, but it IS and issue and Peters has a valid point. But he clearly doesn't understand the issue properly so he makes huge blanket statements etc so no one will hear him ( though I believe he has a valid point). I went to CFNI and spend decades in Charismatic/Pentecostal Christianity, I know there's a truth to what he says. Yet Peters (and the rest) they overstate their cases, or paint too broadly, and so the result is it just stirs up controversy. I believe Rod's point is also valid, not ALL charismatics/pentecostals do such or teach such--but there IS such teaching. So Rod refutes coz Peter's is painting too broadly, meanwhile quacks and lunatics continue to operate under the radar in Charismatic movements TRULY teaching people to turn off their minds, don't use logic, etc etc, THESE ARE FACTS! So it needs to be addressed, but alas, both sides just talk past each other, controversy is stirred up, and nobody is helped by any of it...

Heidi Baker has a doctorate in theology. As for CFNI, I have dozens of books by Gordon Lindsay. I don't ever recall him telling people not to use their intellect. As I said there are those on The Lunatic Fringe who seem void of reason, but most of the references to not going by logic have to do with giving supremacy to the word of God as I discussed with Biblical examples in the video.

I love the fact that God has chosen the foolish things of this world to confound the wise. They profess themselves to be wise so they become fools. Satan controls all denominations and so-called churches that combine the two gospels of the New Testament.
Pure evil is knowingly combining the gospel of the grace of God I Corinthians 15:1-4 (Paul's gospel for Gentiles), with the gospel of the kingdom, John 3:16 (gospel of Peter and the 11, for the Jews).
Our church is the "body of Christ," of which Paul was the first member.
Those that combine these separate gospels are II Corinthians 11:14-15 Minsters of Satan.

Interesting take, Rod. Kat Kerr is hardly the only example of charismatics believing lunacy - but I only had 50 minutes. Sid Roth has a massive, massive following and is every bit as looney as Kat Kerr is. Dr. Michael Brown heartily endorses Sid Roth. I guarantee you the great, great majority of charismatics follow either, some, or all of the following: Kenneth Copeland, Benny Hinn, Jesse Duplantis, Joel Osteen, Joyce Meyer, Bill Johnson, Creflo Dollar, Andrew Wommack and Joseph Prince. You would be hard pressed to find a charismatic who would call any or all of these individuals for the false teachers/prophets that they are. You would not do so either. Every single one of these individuals is a proven false teacher and false prophet.

Hello again, Justin. Sorry, but your guarantee doesn't really mean much to me, considering your history with shabby research and spreading misinformation. There are approximately 650 million Pentecostals/Charismatics in the world. Joel Osteen has 2.58M subscribers. Sid Roth has 1.47M. Joseph Prince has 999K. Joyce Meyer has 815K. Benny Hinn has 412K. Kenneth Copeland has 357K. Creflo Dollar has 340K. Andrew Wommack has 198K. Jesse Duplantis has 178K. Bill Johnson has 110K. According to my math that comes to a total of 7.459 million subscribers. Allowing for some overlap with subscribers and that (generously) comes to about 1% of the world's Pentecostal/Charismatic population. Many of them outside of the US don't even have a TV or internet access. None of the charismatics I associate with watch Sid Roth, Kat Kerr, Jesse Duplantis or Benny Hinn. Some listen to Wommack or Copeland or the others, but overall I would say that well under 10% follow any of them. The thing is, there's so many of us around the world that even a small minority adds up to millions. As for calling them false teachers/prophets, I have a pretty high bar for calling people out as heretics. I believe that one has to deny an essential doctrine of the faith to qualify as a heretic, which isn't the case with any of the names you mentioned. Do I disagree with them on some issues? Absolutely. But I obviously disagree with you on some issues as well, and yet I don't call you or your ilk heretics/false teachers .... etc. I like the concept of Mere Christianity. If we agree on the essentials we ought to be able to tolerate one another on our differences regarding nonessentials. Blessings.

Every single one of them have given false prophecies and have put words in God's mouth He emphatically did not say. But putting words in God's mouth He did not say, sadly, is just not a big deal in the Charismatic Movement.
As for these individuals representing a small minority of charismatics, that is not true. I've preached in 28 countries and can tell you that all of these false teachers are known and revered and they have spawned countless other false teachers and false prophets who fleece millions of the poor and sick.
Here is a simple question: Do you believe Kenneth Copeland and Jessie Duplantis meet the biblical qualifications for being in ministry? Are they biblically qualified? I'm not asking if you have "differences" with them. I have secondary differences with many preachers I admire - but they are biblically qualified to preach and be in ministry. Do you believe Kenneth Copeland and Jessie Duplantis are biblically qualified to be in ministry? If not, do you believe they should get out of ministry?

First, a definition of a false teacher and false prophet is NOT what Justin Peters thinks it is based on who Justin Peters doesn't like or agree with. Same goes for me or anyone else. FIRST, you must BIBLICALLY define what a FALSE TEACHER and FALSE prophet are. Secondly, I CAN PROVE by Scripture that what you TEACH (regarding certain issues) is an INCOMPLETE GOSPEL and is BLASPHEMY of the HOLY SPIRIT. So, what's worse? Being a thief? Or blaspheming the Spirit of God? Being a liar? Or preaching against the Spirit of Truth? Making Justin Peters uncomfortable or GRIEVING the Holy Spirit? For every single reason you would call any of these 'false' teachers and/or prophets I can identify you as a BLASPHEMER of the Spirit. I would warn you. Tread carefully.
