I think the gas coming out of the silver bar while the cooling process is actually oxygen gas. Silver in the liquid state has the ability to dissolve oxygen gas, wich comes out of the solution when the silver hardens. This gives you a rough an sometimes even a sponge like texture to your silver bar. That is one of the main reasons why the stirling silver was invented, because this alloy does not absorbe any oxygen gas. Give it a like so maybe Cody will read my comment :D

+joe doe I don't think it's CO2. I've melted silver before with borax and sodium carbonate as flux and it doesn't fizz like this when solidifying. Sodium carbonate is useful btw because it will reduce any leftover AgCl to metallic silver.

+Lucas Jonsson A "mole" in chemistry is a way in which chemists are able to quantify the number of molecules present in a substance. Specifically, one mole is 6.02 x 10^23 molecules. No matter what element you are referring to, one mole is always made up of this same number of molecules, however one mole of an element like Hydrogen, will WEIGH much less than one mole of a substance like Gold, even though they have the same number of molecules. One of the better analogies that I have heard is that you can think of the chemistry term "mole," similarly to how you would use the term "a dozen." You can have a dozen eggs, and you can have a dozen elephants, you still have the same number of each, 12, but the weight of the 12 elephants will be far greater than the weight of the 12 eggs.

Hi Cody, so how would you go about turning that block of silver into wire? (about 5mm thick) I buy silver wire for a lot of money, and the silver bars is considerably cheaper. They charge me over half the price of silver extra for just turning it into wire. Any ideas?
+Psyfer you'd need to get it hot enough to be malleable then force it through a die, winding it or keeping it straight depending on your preference or use I'd assume.
+Psyfer google rolling mill like that r.ebay.com/PFcTKZ , or something like that r.ebay.com/2MKzhN making wires is common problem in jewelry making - so one possibility to look in that direction
Hey Cody, I hope you don't beat yourself up over screwing something up when you wing it with an experiment and it doesn't come out the way you want it to. In this case, "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" truly applies. Learning from your mistakes can sometimes be much better than learning from success. Hell, I'm 19 and have never done an experiment like this in my life. I don't even fancy myself a scientist. The best thing I've done is mixed corn starch with water and punched it. You know about that, I'm sure. But yeah...you learn from mistakes a lot better than success. Keep going, you're going to be the next Michio Kaku in my book. I hope you read this, bud. You're one of my most closely followed UA-cam channels in my life. And the Cody's Mine series is by far my favorite, I can't see what you'll do with it. And at least relocate that mouse bro!
could you skip the step of converting the silver nitrate into silver chloride and just directly convert the silver nitrate into silver oxide using the sodium hydroxide?
Hey Cody, you inspired me to make also videos, but Im not that good withs chemicals like you, but I started building swords, weapons ans machines - keep your work up you are inspiring alot of people out there :)
Nice to see the process. I scrap through a big refiner. I usually bring 10lbs of mixed grade silver at a time and get back 10 ounce .999 ingots. Same thing with karat gold but much smaller quantities. 400 grams and get back 1 ounce .999 ingots. The karat gold melt usually assays at 50% (8K - 22K scrap and some gold-filled thrown in). I find the metal at junk stores for pennies. The refiner takes 2% of the gold (and whatever silver is alloyed in) and 10% of the silver. $4 for each ingot. Works for me.
I've been watching a lot of your videos after just recently discovering your channel and you've made silver chloride a few times. Have you ever considered trying to make your own photographic film?

4:40 a easy way to tell if you have saturated your solution with silver. Is to let it cool to room temperature and if any silver nitrate crystals form you will know you have a saturated solution. Just add distilled water to dissolve the silver nitrate crystals.
If an article of silver is stamped "sterling", it is required by law to contain AT LEAST 92.5% silver. This is a federal regulation. According to 16 CFR 23.6, (b) "It is unfair or deceptive to mark, describe, or otherwise represent all or part of an industry product as “silver,” “solid silver,” “Sterling Silver,” “Sterling,” or the abbreviation “Ster.” unless it is at least 925⁄1,000 ths pure silver." The above quote is copied from the actual text of the regulation. So if you would like jail time or tens of thousands of dollars in fines, any silver marked sterling must be AT LEAST .925. As a Master Goldsmith I have to be aware of these laws.
Im not sure if you even have time to answer the comments but i had some troubles to refine silver that i extracted from photographic fixer. Silver i got from fixer wasn't ofc pure, so i run it trough the nitric acid and then cemented silver put of the solution, using piece of copper (since most silver refining videos are using this rather easy method i thought i'd skip your silver chloride method). If i'd used this silver for jewellery, i would of be happy with it, but since i like to experiment with photography, i wanted turn silver back into silver nitrate, but solution was still blueish - meaning that my cemented silver wasn't pure. Then i mixed my dissolved silver with table salt solution to get silver chloride, washed it and used 30% NaOH solution to turn it to silver oxide and as i followed one silver refining pdf manual, which said that adding hydrogen peroxide will leave me with silver as a metal and NaCl dissolved into water. I started with aprox 60g silver cement but after NaCl + NaOH + H2O2 treatment i was left with 9,4g silver and lots of slack, after melting. Where did it dissapear? Slack is rather heavy, is it possible that some of the silver is stuck in there as some compounds that didn't react in the reactions? Also i apologize about my english.
+Cody'sLab From the speculators I've been watching on youtube (mainly Peter Schiff) silver is expected to reach $400.00/oz. Though that may be an overly optimistic opinion, who knows. It's definitely on it's way up, so I wouldn't sweat it too much if I were you. Thanks for the interesting videos.
+Thunderkleets It is $15/oz... There is no way in hell (short of hyperinflation) that it would ever reach $400 before WW3. haha! Even gold was at $400 in my lifetime, and has only tripled.
Alyosha Romanov Yeah his neighbors out in country are too far away and I doubt they care what goes on. It seems like he is at the college/university and it looks like he is living with his girlfriend in probably a rented house and it looks like the neighbors are pretty close. I just hope he doesn't have the cops show up at his door one day or even bash it in because someone misunderstood something.
I'm with you matey I worked as a laboratory assistant in high schools and I just hated working with acids no matter how careful you are I always ended up with holes in my clothes as for Silver Nitrate it was worse no matter how long I wore gloves I seemed to always end up with brown stains on my hands which took weeks to go away no matter how many times you washed them and no matter what you washed them with I know some chemical used to dilute the brown colour but I forget what it was Great videos incredibly interesting despite the loss of funds compared to metal extracted keep it up they are great to watch
Today, 05 January, 2021, at the spot price 10 troy oz of silver brings $276.40. If you still have that bar it is now worth about $30 more than you have invested in it. That is 30 of today's dollars and not 2016's.

oh and one other thing and i swear ill stop replying to myself..lol thanks for posting this. if you did not see my comment on another video. many people who do this refining guard their knowlege like cerberus guards the gates of hell. me asking questions on a refining forum got me banned...becasue i was not posting answers in the form of questions like jepordy..and they said i needed to fail to learn, but i could not afford to fail at the start, chemical costs strapped me out for cash..i needed to just recoupe my losses not mess up completely and be out some 600 dollars for gear and start up...but DUDADESILSE.com has great chemical prices..as well and flasks, beakers, stir rods, pipettes, etc..
+Manic Morzan who wants chump and Hillary for dead
Hi Cody, so how would you go about turning that block of silver into wire? (about 5mm thick)
I buy silver wire for a lot of money, and the silver bars is considerably cheaper. They charge me over half the price of silver extra for just turning it into wire.
Any ideas?
+Psyfer you'd need to get it hot enough to be malleable then force it through a die, winding it or keeping it straight depending on your preference or use I'd assume.
+Psyfer google rolling mill like that r.ebay.com/PFcTKZ , or something like that r.ebay.com/2MKzhN
making wires is common problem in jewelry making - so one possibility to look in that direction
You are pretty smart Cody. You are probably my favorite youtuber
Cody, you're my favorite science you tuber. Keep up the good work
The Bernie 2016 frame made me laugh so much
When he showed the chem reaction my barin blew up.
Brain****
11:33 where ever you live, it's god damn gorgeous. Wow!
Tooele utah
Man i watched this entire video and didn't get bored once. Great video
Dat Bernie flash tho
Is the audio outmof sync for anybody else?
yes
+Arjen Hartink bung my booce
+EchoGenshu Yeah the description states that there is a videoclip missing maybe thats why its out of sync
+Dylan Sloan some one knows finally, no I am a caveman, I me no have money for pretzels
+Dylan Sloan me thank you
"And of course x will react with y"
WELL YES OF COURSE
y i don't know
I can't stop watching these videos! Just plain awesome.
Cody, i'm so happy for your vids! big tnx and "hi" from Latvia.
could you skip the step of converting the silver nitrate into silver chloride and just directly convert the silver nitrate into silver oxide using the sodium hydroxide?
yes actually, I did that in another video in fact. the problem is that I would also drop the copper form solution.
how many episodes are you going to upload? i like this episodes
+Mark de jager
I am planning on at least 12
+Cody'sLab don't stop there :)
+Cody'sLab the video is out of sink from about 7:17, maybe needs a re upload, still video is great
+Adio_ sinc* Major Difference
+Emre Ka sync*
Hey Cody, you inspired me to make also videos, but Im not that good withs chemicals like you, but I started building swords, weapons ans machines - keep your work up you are inspiring alot of people out there :)
+maexit nice tomahawk :D
Ive been watching your videos for quite some time now, and I always rewatch videos since they're quite informative and well thought out.
Works for me.
i really wish my chemistry teacher had done more practical demonstrations, this is much more interesting.
I've been watching a lot of your videos after just recently discovering your channel and you've made silver chloride a few times. Have you ever considered trying to make your own photographic film?
It's getting to be that my favourite parts of these videos are when Cody comes to terms with how much money he lost in making the pure metals at the end :)
Also, I loved the Bernie flash. Atta boy!
Really cool videos and thanks for posting them. Hopefully they are making up for your losses when they generate ad revenue on youtube :) I hope my "like" and "subscribe" helps the cause!
I love that you give time lapses of the reactions. Gives a lot of info about what to expect as it progresses. :)
Thank you for your time doing this. A real hands on view of how refining works.
Oh my god I just realized... You're human Minecraft.... You have two mines and a furnace that refines metal.
I may not agree with your political position but i do respect you for your choice of work
Just don't vote for
Mr. Icanfixeverything
i don't understand the majority of this, but its so entertaining! also, why do the acids and stuff turn blue or green sometimes?
most copper compounds are blue in solution form
Ive been spending the past 2hours trying to understand this video and I've learned more chemistry from this than I do in school
i am an electrician and when you do chemistry i don't understand much but i still watch because i like your work. do more electrical projects as well
Police ever show up from being called by a "worried" neighbour? "I watched Breaking Bad! He's making the meths!"
that would be amazing!
I don't think he has neighbours. Have you seen where he lives?
MPKampersand he has an apartment in the city
wutzibu ohh, never knew that. Probably doesn't do this shit there
95% of the time I do not know what you are talking about
😂Same
You can add some sulfuric acid and purify it to 100%
+HOPKIRK it's called having a sense of humor. Apparently you don't have one.
A sense of humour... give me a break, if it's one thing I do have, it's a sense of humour. You obviously don't get that some things are not to be made light of.... idiot.
HOPKIRK Everything can be made light of...literally *everything*. Especially here on the internet. If you can't deal with that, then I suggest you take your pathetic SJW ass off the internet, pumpkin. You can only get your feelings hurt here, Sensitive Suzy.
I wonder if Cody is ever going to be arrested on suspicion of a meth lab, after which they find out that Cody is just recovering precious metals :)
+ImJustACowLol
> just recovering precious metals
u may not be shure if is't legal these days
+ImJustACowLol CHEMISTRY = METH CONFIRMED
Cody'sLab, I love your channel. 11:36 answered a question I have had since I started watching you. It wouldn' have mattered to me if you supported someone else, I would have kept watching. Since you have made your opinion public, I respect you even more as an excellent human being. Bernie 2016.
you are the man cody
you have been my inspiration to study chemistry
Agree. He’s taught me how to love chemistry without having the funds to buy nice glassware etc. Cody is the king of chemistry with soda bottles and aquarium tubing!
Hopefully you make that ~$100 loss back on this video.
+Nicolavs Iohannis Eīganvs oh yes he will he have 230k subs man ;d
He probably won't considering he voted for Bernie Sanders.
Love the subliminal messaging! XD
anyone else see the Bernie 2016 flash on screen for 1 frame
Nathan Seward yes.
Nathan Seward I was so triggered I fucked up my laptop haha. My mom bought 2 though so it's cool.
Oh.
What's weird is I didn't notice it consciously but now that you say it I feel like I saw it somewhere.
Disgusting...
I keep doing the math and so far I believe UA-cam should about cover your losses. So awesome that you do these things and I really hope you break even or better as you totally deserve to!!
4:40 a easy way to tell if you have saturated your solution with silver. Is to let it cool to room temperature and if any silver nitrate crystals form you will know you have a saturated solution. Just add distilled water to dissolve the silver nitrate crystals.
No sterling silver used. Sterling is .925 fine minimum.
That's not true, 925 is the maximum
If an article of silver is stamped "sterling", it is required by law to contain AT LEAST 92.5% silver. This is a federal regulation. According to 16 CFR 23.6, (b) "It is unfair or deceptive to mark, describe, or otherwise represent all or part of an industry product as “silver,” “solid silver,” “Sterling Silver,” “Sterling,” or the abbreviation “Ster.” unless it is at least 925⁄1,000 ths pure silver."
The above quote is copied from the actual text of the regulation.
So if you would like jail time or tens of thousands of dollars in fines, any silver marked sterling must be AT LEAST .925.
As a Master Goldsmith I have to be aware of these laws.

"Bernie 2016"
#feelthebern
11:37 : Bernie 2016😂😂🤧
I swear you produce the prettiest colors on this series sometimes.
This and recovering uranium.
Can't you just wait for the market prices to go up to recoup some of the costs?
+Sunny Hill
yes, Fingers crossed!
+Cody'sLab good luck! Silver linings and all that.
+Thunderkleets "silver is expected to reach $400.00/oz." People of UA-cam also say that Anunnaki lizard-men from Planet X are going to arrive in 2014.
I always wonder if your neighbors think you are running some sort of meth lab from your house.
Alyosha Romanov Yeah his neighbors out in country are too far away and I doubt they care what goes on. It seems like he is at the college/university and it looks like he is living with his girlfriend in probably a rented house and it looks like the neighbors are pretty close. So I was wondering what the neighbors were thinking about all those fumes coming out of the steps leading down to the basement. I was also wondering what the landlord thinks.
I think Cody is great. I just hope he doesn't have the cops show up at his door one day or even bash it in because someone misunderstood something.
Love the "Bernie 2016" pop up :D
trump
+shayne the brain can't Stump him
shayne the brain Well then your name doesnt make any sence. Because I think that everyone who is voting for Trump is fucking braindead
+Majorplayer Why are communists so disrespectful to people who have different opinions?
Taydolf Swiftler
Trumps ideas are no respectful opinion
I'm with you matey I worked as a laboratory assistant in high schools and I just hated working with acids no matter how careful you are I always ended up with holes in my clothes as for Silver Nitrate it was worse no matter how long I wore gloves I seemed to always end up with brown stains on my hands which took weeks to go away no matter how many times you washed them and no matter what you washed them with I know some chemical used to dilute the brown colour but I forget what it was Great videos incredibly interesting despite the loss of funds compared to metal extracted keep it up they are great to watch
Great video Cody, don't worry about the money, it's all about the science and having fun.
Is it just me or the voice is out of sync
Another editing mistake? The video does not match the audio around 7:20
nvm, just the janky UA-cam player
nvm, just the janky UA-cam player
+Alex Wolski reloaded page and it synced. Seems to be yt fault
+Alex Wolski Use the HTML5 player, not the Flash player.
I was watching on my phone at the time, and unfortunately the youtube app only supports flash
Am I the only one who kinda wants to eat the silver chloride
The Trash Queen you can...
Mama Neko nope I want to too
i shouted at my screen when you reached your hand in that nitric acid, NITRIC ACID DISSOLVES GLOVES CODY
Today, 05 January, 2021, at the spot price 10 troy oz of silver brings $276.40. If you still have that bar it is now worth about $30 more than you have invested in it. That is 30 of today's dollars and not 2016's.
You can't make your videos fast enough. You should just walk around with a Gopro on your head and narrate all day.
oh come on. you are really smart. whyd you vote for bernie? you lost a bet huh
+TheZombCastHD would u rather trump?
+Nick Ward yessir. bernie isnt strong enough to run the country as an commander in cheif. neither is hillary. well hillary should be in prison. and ted cruz. is well. ted cruz lol
have u actually looked into trumps policy's or just listened to his lie filled speeches?
+Nick Ward policies dont mean shit right now. they are all bullshit lies. they cant do shit with out congresses approval. so a wall or free college aint gunna happen soon. its who stands out as a leader. imo its actually should be bernie vs trump but people vote for hillary.for god knows what reason..
TheZombCastHD so no u havent, you do know america is in 17 trillion dollars debt more than any other country and he wants to reduce taxes, you do know what happens when a country cant pay back its debts, the economic implodes and everyone looses their job, a lot like what happened to Greece
Hey Cody, you should share your ad revenue on this video with other youtubers since you like socialism so much! 11:36
I saw that too, and couldn’t agree with you more
Thanks for the content, Cody. Thank you for the longer video as well !
started watching from season 1 today.. i am hooked, so interesting i cant stop watching
You say you lost 70 dollars but because you filmed it for UA-cam you made it back
He made $230 of unsponsored income. Nobody except him will know how much he actually made.
*****
It's only the norm if he has sponsors.
Also he's probably not selling the silver. So he lost the full amount really ;)
It seems like fromm al of sudden, the video and sound aren't in synch anymore
+RenoDesu reloading fixed it for me :D
Reloaded 3 times in a row, didn't fixed it. Oh well, I watched anyway
+RenoDesu Uninstall Flash (24/7 security vulnerability) and allow the HTML5 player to take over.
Who'd you vote for? I'm very curious.
+MegaDoubleStack He voted for Bernie Sanders (it used to say so in the video but people was rude about it so he removed it)
+Republiken :( :( :( :(((((((
+Republiken that made me upset.
I have no clue what you're talking about but this is so satisfying...
Anyone else notice a long black screen at 7:10 ?
It desynchronized the video
