The most legendary Rick-roll of all time.
Rick Rock and Roll baby!!! :D
💯👍
The Rick Grohl
It's so sad that you think that's what this is about. Decent music is lost on dickhead children like you.
@@fdfsdfsvsfgsg4888 more sad to assume what people are thinking isnt it? Doesnt really sound like he was trying to make a point.
I don’t think people realise how difficult performing having a guest singer without practicing or even knowing each other actually is. This is amazing!
Absolutely! Stern said it best in an interview w/ Grohl about this particular jam, "That's what separates the men from the boys."
They did it more than once....
@@buzjevur They did, but THIS was the first time.
@@samsambanana didn't know that
Who cares.It's Rick Astley
Just listened to Dave talk about this in his audiobook, The Storyteller. The band had to figure out a cover song for the BBC which needed to be doable in a short space of time when they returned home. Like half an hour before this show they were messing about in the warm up room jamming ideas and Dave noticed Rick Astley was on the lineup. So they tried Never Gonna Give You Up. Realised it perfectly merged with Smells Like Teen Spirit and found it so funny they played it over and over. Whilst they were playing the gig, Dave noticed Rick rocking out side stage watching the band. During a keyboard solo, he walked over to Rick and shouted "we just learned Never Gonna Give You Up half an hour ago, wanna do it with us?" to which Rick replied "FUCK YES". Then this happened.
What show was this?
@@b9y some festival in Japan, I think.
That's the best story I've ever heard
Yep I’m on this right now in the book!
This is awesome.
Just heard it today myself and here I am. Then heard the news about Taylor an hour later. :(
Rick Astley's voice is insane.
He really have the voice.
Has anyone managed to watch this without grinning like an idiot? I know i haven't
That is so true !!
Yes!!
Ear to ear
Fuuuuck! lol!!
Not me
It feels strange that a person who sang such a pop song perfectly understands and adapts to the rock atmosphere of a foo fighter concert. This felt good.
I'M FEELING FUCKING MARVELOUS
Its Rick FKN Astley man. They guy can wail.
tbh he needs to start opening for the foos arena tours
He covers Everlong and has covered AC/DC while playing drums
It's a man who understands music. A talented one
His voice is actually really good for rock
Yeah, that bit at about 2:40 was great.
Agreed!
Look up Rick Astley doing Highway to Hell.
Jeph Wahl just watched it not easy to singing and playing the drums But overall his vocals was lacking he just doesn’t have enough gravely tone in his voice and it didn’t attack it as hard as he should have he was much better in on this performance overall
@@NorthernPerformanceGroup this just in, not everyone can sing every song. Have you listened to Steven Tyler try to sing You Shook Me All Night Long? It's fucking awful, but he's still got a voice for rock.
I just realized its a "smells like teen spirit" version of this song. Fucking AMAZING.
Rick Suarez Not only that, but I’m pretty sure they got the idea from a mashup of these two songs that’s been on YT for years now.
In part because it’s such a random and batshit insane combo that I can’t think of how else they thought of doing it, and in part also because the mashup in question suddenly started showing up in “related” and “recommended” vids for many UA-cam users since this concert was aired (despite being almost a decade old at the time - something a lot of people have expressed puzzlement about over in that vid’s comments).
Just listened to a Dave Grohl interview, and the band decided to learn the song when they saw Rick Astley was at the show. In breaking it down, they realized it has exactly the same arrangement as SLTS: Intro, drum break, verse, re-intro, riff... It was the same, so they just adapted the SLTS instrumentation to Never Gonna Give You Up.
During the Foos concert, Dave saw that Astley was off-stage and during a break, asked him if he wanted to perform the song.
@@roykentseyebrows4196 yep, just came here because I saw the interview
@@dinoso same here
@@tdark987 There's a new interview from Grohl that came out today (that's why I'm here) and he says they figured out the connection by themselves.
I love that they never rehearsed this with Rick. Literally happened after Dave and Pat thought it was hilarious that it was almost the same as "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and practiced it for 20 minutes back stage. Haha
The best things in life are often spontaneous.
i got caught off guard with rick screaming "MOTHERFUCKERS"
God damn. I swear they could have turned off his mic and the whole crowd would STILL have heard him... that's a powerful voice.
Rick was from an era where singers, even one-hit wonders of easy listening pop, still needed the ability to actually sing.
Nah. Rick is from the same era as Madonna and it's ko secret Madonna's never been a particularly strong vocalist.
Rick Astley have a very powerful baritone voice
Same era as Mike Patton who, arguably so, has one of the strongest and most dynamic voices across numerous genres and decades.
U shouldn’t say that..
This is one of the most phenomenal moments in our planet's history.
I wasn't expecting his voice to be this good after all the years of singing
Singing for years doesn't damage your throat or anything though...
He’s been resting his voice for 34 years.
@@alaingiguere9197 LOL funny but he is still out there singing and has a pretty good voice too. He did awesome with this one i think
@@alaingiguere9197 A LOT shorter than that. I was surprised to find out on his Wiki page that he was "retired" only for about six years, which was even shorter than I had thought (and I had already known it had not been all the way since 1987).
ETA: If I remember correctly, he decided to focus on his family in 1993, did the occasional gig for friends, and then started making music professionally again in the early 2000s.
@@enjoi62137it does, vocal cord is the only muscle in the human body that wears off with use, especially intense use and an exaggerated one on top of that. singers/vocalists are trained to not strain their voice is exactly for this reason, and it's also the reason why a lot of rock and metal band loses intensity in their voice as they grow old.
granted all other muscles also wear off as people grow old, but they can be trained to be stronger even when you're old, with vocal cord you can't.
You can tell by the smile on the drummer's face that he just had the best time of his life!
And they said Infinity Wars was the most ambitious crossover. We need more rock/alternative remixes of undeniably great pop songs!
Imagine going to see your favorite band and getting rickrolled in real life
They should record a studio version of this!
Definitely
Yes!!
no, this is as perfect as you can get
They should just make him a permanent member of the band.
@@richkellett2418 The should replace Dave for Rick.
I can't believe this has existed for 4 years and I've never seen it before. Can't stop smiling at this!!! :) :) :) "I'M FEELING FUCKIN MARVELOUS!!!!"
Mad respect for rick adapting this well to an impromptu performance.
That voice, even after 30 years, is incredible
What blows me away is that those guys just met Rick 10 mins ago and then can just rock out that pop song musically and make it sound awesome.
And Rick doesn't even know what key he'll be doing it in, presumably. But he could cut it in any key.
that's something only real singers and professionals musicians can pull off.
The "I'M FEELINF FOOCKING MARVELOUS!" will never cease to put a smile on my face!
I love how this version turned out, they should record this. And Rick seemed to absolutely love this!!!! Rock on Rick!!!!!
Rick looked like one of the World's greatest stage-hype men of all time at the beginning 🤣
It sounds kinda like when Scott Reynolds sang for ALL. My mind kept thinking of “She’s My Ex”.
Finally Rick got rolled 🙌 What a legend, for no rehearsal, no in-ears, no mic check, and probably why he sounded even better than usual, singing louder because of it and showing just how good his voice is. 👏
That Rick Astley album is no longer a "guilty pleasure". It's f ing brilliant. Period.
This was where I first noticed Taylor, he was so fun to watch. He was really enjoying their performance.
Feel good moment. 2 totally different artists actually breaking 4th wall and enjoying it. Dude's voice could bust a speaker. I respect the hell outta the moment where Dave signals to keep moving through the jam and everyone including Rick are in sync.
4th wall? Rick Astley is a fictional character? Clumsy metaphor
Never Gonna Smells Like Teen Spirit!!! Awesome!!!
Smells Like Rick Roll
The absolute joy on all of the Foo Fighters' faces is amazing
Videos like this give me hope for humanity
Now _this_ is the style his voice is made for!
The absolute joy on the guys faces as they played this song... just a group of guys sharing an inside joke and enjoying the heck out of what they do. Anybody else think Kurt would have loved this?
“I’M FEELING FUCKING MARVELOUS!”
This makes me happy in so many ways. The mashup I never knew I needed
Man, Rick sounds fucking perfect. Simply amazing after all these years.
So wholesome. You love to see rockers not to be “too cool” for pop like this.
agreed. Great songs are just great songs. There's a cute video of Vince Neil from Motley Crue being interviewed in Las Vegas while he waits for a valet to bring his car around. The guy asking him questions asks "What is your favorite show in Vegas?". Vince doesn't hesitate. He just goes "Manilow" :)
@@dakinikiss that’s so sweet!!
I didn’t want to like this. I really didn’t. But this is the best thing I’ve ever heard
ahahahha Same
Hearing him chat to Chris Evans, Rick said he was jet-lagged but the adrenaline kicked in and he's " feelin' f%%kin' marvellous"!!!😝
Rick has just earned the title of "best crowd pleaser at Glasto" this year. Bless him. Didn't rate him much in the 80s (I was too "superior" 😂) but I'd definitely go to see him live these days..
Total pros, man. He knew the key to come in on (maybe they told him). Knew with one gesture to repeat the chorus and one point at the guitar to know a solo was coming
True musicianship, never met each other and can pull that off. Hats off.
l was there.Dave mentions this performance in his new book. Thanks for putting this together.l was there with my six year old.Her first ever gig.
I respect just how much better of a singer Rick has gotten over time.
Best crossover ever
You beat me to it
@@ricksuarez2357 lol XD
Dave talked about this in an interview I watched recently and he said that Rick has the most powerful voice he's ever heard in his life.....I believe it after seeing this
I never knew I needed a rock version of this song until now. SO AMAZING!!!
The energy we need right now.
Lol I loved this to death, at the begining when Rick screams, you can see Taylor´s genuine smile like when your dad embarrasses you in public but S"%T´s so funny you can´t help but laugh.
perfectly put 🤣
you can tell he was waiting for this day to rock this song OUT!!!
Yea thay pulled Rick out the crowd no rehearsing just done it amazing
How could anyone thumbs down this!!!??????? Gold!!!!
Taylor Hawkins’ on stage performances were fun as hell. High energy and smiles. Nothing but good times with the Foo Fighters.
Fly High And Above TH 🙏
If Rick Astley is not cool there, then nobody is cool. I just love it! (Big Foo Fighters fan!) :-D
This is so cool
Shows the vocal power Rick Astley really has AND how cool he is. Great job as always by Dave and the Foo Fighters
I'm hear from the Bill Simmons podcast! Great interview with Dave!
Lol dude same
Same
same
Mr Mike Hilliard same
Rick was so fired up you can tell he loves to rock!
When Rick Astley screamed "It's fookin' mahvelous" my brain exploded from sheer joy. This whole thing is just amazing!!!!! 🥰❤️😻😍💗💋💓😋💕🎈🎉🧁🥰😍🤩🥳
Wow this is surreal ..two styles of genres collaborating and having a good time..amazing
This is pure gold. Dave described how the Foos were basically playing Smells Like Teen Spirit and Rick sang his own lyrics over it. Amazing.
I've never been so glad to be Rick Rolled. And I wish all memes were like that - not hurting anyone, everyone smiling and laughing, no one offended... alas, it's not possible. But this was great fun.
Nirvana gun' give you up
The musicianship of everybody on that stage is IMPECCABLE!! Not every musician or singer could do that. This makes me so happy!!!
How when a whole audience got a Rick-roll thanks to a very hilarious combination. That was very cool!!
lol Im sure RIck has been wanting to address a crowd like that for years and he finally got too.
"CMON YOU MOTHER FUCKKKERSSS." lolol
no one gonna mention how Taylor opened with smells like teen spirit
Dave and Taylor did an interview about this. Actually they were jamming on Teen spirit and they noticed that these two songs were similar and went well together, after that they went on stage and while playing they saw Astley at the edge of the stage,he was supposed to play later. Dave just went in and asked him to join them. That's the reason there's teen spirit at the start.
@@maninthecrowd5076 woah
The whole arrangement sounds like SLTS
The 2 songs really are quite similar: ua-cam.com/video/NN75im_us4k/v-deo.html
No, it's not a rickroll, seriously.
I thought that it was pretty obvious and this dates back to 2009 ua-cam.com/video/NN75im_us4k/v-deo.html
The rock metal community LOVES you Rick ! Great job ! Didn't make it about you like other pop artist usually do. Well done !
Foo fighters arnt metal !
@@pricewern he said rock/metal. Plus I would love if you actually defined metal lmao. Typical poser elitist.
@@isaiahhernandez8160 Kind of far to go that into an insult over something correct. I've listened to all types of rock for over 25 years and I've known the FF for a long ass time. Not metal though. They never tried to be either, so I don't get the hate for that comment.
Had to stop Dave's audible book to check this out. Soooo good. Nice one Rick. Not so innocent after all. Love it.
Dave is like a conductor tells Taylor to go round again then warns Rick that Shiffy will solo the next section such an awesome generous person
It gets better each time I watch.
had he originally recorded like that it would have been cool! I worked in a record store when that song was released OMG you could not get away from it. just horrid bubble gum music by a pastie red head. BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO Rick an Dave for grooving with a 80"s star! Great going Rick for killing it!
This gets more and more awesome every time I go back to watch it
Great job Rick! You rocked that!
Never did I think people would head bang for Rick Astley
Begging them to make a studio version of this! It's unbelievably good
Rick has that unique voice that you can't get out of your head. doesn't matter how many times he sings it, it is the same but different, this is one of those moments.
So awesome! He just slipped in as though they’d been playing it together for ages, no rehearsal, warm up or nothin!
This is fucking brilliant
"I'm feeling fucking marvelous"... Us too Ricky us too..
I only found this a couple weeks ago. Now I wonder how I can live without it.
You’re so missed Taylor ♥️
This is surreal
Hang on I literally have just realised after watching this a load of times the begining of it. They play it exactly like Smells like teen spirit.
This isn't a Rick Roll; this is a Rick Rock.
This is the single greatest piece of content on the internet.
This is the greatest fucking thing.. holy shit..
So I just came across this watching other Foo Fighters Vids... Man this is absolutely amazing! I never really got into this song in '87 but This version is 1000x's better than the original and needs to be recorded and released!!!! Love it!
im telling you that seeing rick sing this during the New Kids On The Block Tour last year was a dream. the even had him sing it again to close the show. He is so humble
Laughing cuz they arranged it like teen spirit...-well done lads 👏
I love how Dave just has to points to the crew to let them know whats happening!
the whole song sounded suspiciously like Teen Spirit ...
you mean it 'smelled' like teen spirit?
There's an old mashup of the two songs on the youtube somewhere. I assume Dave's seen it, and that's where the idea came from.
BS Report w/ Bill Simmons interviewing Dave brought me here
rick astley kicks it.. even foo fighters go along with it! epic
¡Sublime!
... Y cuando todos creyeron que iban a versionar a Nirvana; empieza "Never gonna give you up" Quién hubiese podido estar ahí...
AMO al señor Rick Astley y porsupuesto a los Foo Fighters. ¡Larga vida a la buena música! ♥️✨🍷
Color me impressed! Viva Rick Astley and the Foo Fighters!
I’ve heard this song a million times... and only with this version do I now fully understand the lyrics. “...we’ve known each other for so long.. your hearts been aching but you’re too shy to say it......You wouldn’t get this from any other guy..” uhhh WOW
Dave Grohl is a rock aficionado, a genius, legend, historian, bravo
And a pioneer.
True Pro´s. Never judge a book by the cover.
Man, the was a f*cking marvelous mash up! Dave and Rick rocked the house!!
Never thought I'd see Rick dancing around that much xD
Let alone screaming "motherfuckers"
But he's a chav from Haydock.
Dave Grohl/Foo Fighters - thanks for bringing fun back to rock n' roll - cheers mates
Rick is a real singer and it shows. What a boss!
