@@rumblefish9 It was always the intention, even back when Lucas only vaguely imagined a sequel trilogy decades ago, that an old Luke would return like Alec Guinness in the original film and hand down the legacy to a new generation. You sound like a kid who has only seen the prequels saying Luke steals Obi-Wan Kenobi's legacy in A New Hope.
The nicest thing I can say about Mark is, his portrayal of Luke in those 3 films formed my ethics and morals as a kid and taught me what a good person/hero really is. He is iconic
Agreed he was a symbol of hope in our youths, unfortunately his final film appearance felt like seeing your childhood hero at an AA meeting, Luke was never meant to be a dark character and that was an unfortunate close to that character
not just your life mate, but mine also. I was 8 back in 77 when i first Star Wars in the ABC Cinema in Walsall West Midlands, it was a saturday afternoon, i think it cost like 20 pence or 30 pence back then. I was that blown away i ran back outside and got back in the queue to watch it again. That film created what would later become my moral and ethical compass in life. I`de love the chance to shake Mark Hamill`s hand and say `Thank you`, it truly was a magical time in cinema history.
Mark Hamill advices for young actors how to play new Luke Skywalker even within Deepfake, Deaging if Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have a choice.I don't care about if Kathy Kennedy this evil woman will interferes again.
That scene in a New Hope where Luke looks at the twin suns of Tatooine with John Williams’s music in the background gets me every single time. I’ve probably watched that movie over 50 times and it gets me every single time. Absolutely magical.
It is one of the most important scenes in the whole Star Wars series. I wonder if the movie would've been as successful without it. It's the first scene in the movie that really tells you the movie wants to be taken seriously, and not just be a comedic adventure romp. The tone established there may have been what inspired them to do the late script change of killing Obi-Wan, and then having him speak to Luke in the afterlife during the final battle. I think the original script just had Obi-Wan speaking on the communicator to him from the Rebel base. Also, that tone seems to be what The Empire Strikes Back leaned into heavily. They had the benefit of seeing how well the scene worked in the final film by that time.
I don't even think Lucas realizes how important that scene is --- it literally inspires you to find a zest for life and go on adventures! It has the same effect that looking at the ocean had on people like Christopher Columbus and Ferdinand Magellan --- wondering what was beyond the horizon. Such a perfect scene for the dreamer in us.
My Mom died in the summer of 2020. Later in the year I was watching the end of the second season of the Mandalorian, when suddenly I saw an appearance by, unspoiled to me, a younger (CGI'd) Luke Skywalker. And I cried like a baby, in a good way. It was like a surprise visit from an old friend, something happy to help me a little with my grief. That's the power of that character, and I'm glad that Mark seems to understand that kind of reaction from people.
Your words hit me hard in the chest. My Mom passed away around the same time as yours, and ever since, in both TV shows and film, even music… there are certain scenes or moments where I have this overwhelmingly emotional reaction. I always have a flicker of thought as to why i feel it, but I think I try so hard to constantly repress the sadness and woe and grief to the point that the true reason I feel something in that moment is almost confusing to me. Almost embarrassing because I think I should be stronger than it, I should be a rock because everyone goes through loss on that scale in one way or another. I felt the same thing when Luke showed up. I was embarrassed, watching it with my wife who had never really been a Star Wars fan, and letting out a whimper trying to stifle back tears and being so conflicted as to why I was embarrassed to begin with, or why I held back my feelings. Im sorry to ramble. You aren’t alone in your loss. And with how cold and distant the world seems lately, it’s nice to know that I am not alone in my feelings sometimes. I hope you find peace and longer stretches of comfort as time passes. I know that time passing and reflection of the good times, what I can share with my own little family, are the only bandages on a wound that will sit heavy forever.
Im sorry about your loss. I completely understand why seeing something from your childhood makes you happy. I havent lost my mother but im in a place right now where im looking back to my younger self for assurance or joy maybe. We dont know each other but i wanted to share that with you and say its going to be ok. Just hold on to those happy memories.
I got to meet Mark Hamill at a meet and greet in Cincinnati many years ago. He was getting blasted by Star Wars fans, and even my favorite character from him is Luke. I couldn't help but not mention Star Wars and instead talked to him about voicing the Joker. I had brought my 1999 Master Replica Luke lightsaber with me so he could sign it. I didn't bring it to the counter because I didn't want to be another Star Wars nerd like 95% of the others. However, he seen the lightsaber when I got it back from my parents and he stopped me. Told me to bring it over and he'll sign it without me even asking about it and even put "May the force be with you" on it. My little kid eyes swelled up, I started to cry, and he gave me a hug. He such a nice man and is willing to notice his fans much more than 99% of other Hollywood celebrities.

Mark Hamill was absolutely great as Luke Skywalker. Luke is truly an admirable character and is one of the all time great Jedi. He seems like enjoyed played Luke and got along well with Alec Guiness, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher. I'm glad he went on the voice roles. Being a Batman fan, I watched the animated show from the 90's. I found later that he did the voice of Joker, and I very surprised to know that. But was very good as the Joker. Good for him and his wife for still being married for 45 years!
I love how Mark Hamill can never tell a story without using the voice impression of the person he's speaking of! With the exception of Carrie Fischer. Haha!
The scar on Mark Hamill's face was from a near fatal car crash. The accident happened before Empire Strikes Back. He was driving on an LA freeway and almost missed an exit off ramp and lost control of his Ford Mustang. The scene where Luke Skywalker gets attacked by the ice planet Hoth snow creature in Empire Strikes Back George Lucas thought that would be a great way to explain why he got the scar.

To think, if Lucas had decided to cast someone else the world would never have gotten Mark Hamill as a public figure-he’s contributed so much to not just our culture but our community as nerds and star wars fans. This interview was a great reminder of that. Luke Skywalker is such a monumental figure in so many of our memories it seems like Mark was destined to be him and was always him before the movies were even made, but he was just a normal dude who happened to fit the part
I am from Ukraine and I came to watch an interview of my beloved actor. Thank you for mentioning my country. Thanks to Mark for everything he does for our country. He is a wonderful person both on the screen and in life. May the Force be with him.
Love him as Luke, but love him even more as a person and as a VA. He will always be the best Joker, just like Kevin Conroy will always be the best Batman (VA-wise at least). He looks great, glad he is still active in the business!
The Coronet theatre in San Francisco-I was there! Not on the first day but I remembered waiting in the very long line to finally getting in. Brings back fond memories.
Love the segment and Star Wars will always be a part of our families lives. Will admit I love it the most but you can’t help to be drawn to it. It’s original and continuously draws our interest.
He has always seemed like a sincere, genuine, kind, decent human being. He looks and sounds great, and seems happy. Wishing him and his family all the best.
Mark Hamill's ability to mimic other people's voices & accents is uncanny. He does it in lots of interviews & voice-overs and the ones done here are hilarious & spot-on.
Mark is genuine and not a lot of that in the industry. And his impressions...even back in the day, his Yoda is classic. Would love to have seen what he would have done for Amadeus..not that Hulce wasnt incredible.
Star Wars, Empire and Jedi theatrical releases will always have a special place in my heart. I can watch them over and over again and it takes me back to my childhood, where I fell in love with all of the characters. Those 3 movies will never be topped in my opinion.
It's not just Luke. They touched on this, but he'll be remembered as the Joker, too. As many wonderful performances as the Joker as we've had, when I read Batman comics, which I still like to do in early middle age, it's Hamill's voice that I hear when I read the Joker's dialogue. (And, on a related note, it's Kevin Conroy's voice I hear when it's Batman/Bruce Wayne dialogue.)
Mark Hamill is one of my favorite celebrities ever! The amount of love and respect he has for his fans is amazing and he just overall seems like a really fun guy to hang out with 😁
Mark Hamill's one of the most kindest, nicest, and most legendary actors to ever walk the planet. More of him, each year, makes my heart beam with pride. I'm sure Carrie Fisher is smiling down upon him, each and every day, too. 🤟
Ive been watching Star Wars since the 80s and I just think Hamills work on the Last Jedi was so great, if not, awesome. Bold direction for the character.
Never understood why he didn't have a bigger acting career. He's a great actor. Was he typecast? BTW he was on the Pilot of "Eight is Enough" when Star Wars became a hit, he tried to get out of the show. They wouldn't let him out. But then he got into a car accident which almost killed him and they had to recast the role of DAVID. He's in the pilot episode and I think he would have been good on that show if he stuck with it,
Unfortunately the car accident did extensive damage to his face, which may have affected his ability to get leading man roles. If you notice his facial features up to the first Star Wars, he closely resembled another actor who ten years later would rise to fame and become the biggest A-Lister in history. Yes, I think Mark Hamill could have been Tom Cruise before Tom Cruise became Tom Cruise.😮
Mark Hamill was done with blockbusters after Return of the Jedi because of the crazy scheduling, workload and (back then) danger. It's a very stressful part of the business. Hamill also said before that he was always much more comfortable doing voice work and theatre. Very few actors actually want to do franchise films and blockbusters, they do it for the paycheque.
He was typecast as Luke Skywalker after the films, but didn’t age well after Return of the Jedi. In village of the damned with legend Christopher Reeve, he did not age well by 1995.
I got him to sign my Return of the Jedi VHS cover decades ago. I still have it in a frame. We share the same first name, and he wrote "From one Mark to another". Very, very great, down to earth, extremely nice guy.
Thank you, Mark, for giving us so much great work over the years, in Star Wars and in many other things. Star Wars will always be ready for you to return, don't you worry! I totally respect your feelings if you believe that you're done in the role of Luke, but hearing one day that you're back to reprise him again would bring a smile to my face any day.
Mark Hamill is an icon of the entertainment industry, which makes it all the more shocking that this report completely misstated his latest on-screen appearance as Luke Skywalker. You could be forgiven for essentially ignoring his de-aged appearances in a 2020 episode of "The Mandalorian" and a 2022 episode of "The Book of Boba Fett," but he directly reprised his role in 2019's "The Rise of Skywalker."
I love that man. Via Star Wars and his voice acting (he is my favorite animated version of the Joker) he has given joy to millions of people around the globe 😊
Wish this interview could of been longer. Always a delight to hear Mark Hamill discuss Star Wars and his career, hearing his honest opinions and critiques. George Lucas’ story of hope and redemption will always resonate with people, and Mark Hamill’s portrayal of Luke Skywalker is an integral part of that story. Just a shame that George Lucas relinquished control of his creation. Mark Hamill, and Luke Skywalker, deserved better from the sequels. Shame on you Disney for what has been done to this once iconic franchise and Lucasfilm.
The OG trilogy were 3 of the most important movies of all time.. I remember the bewilderment and true shock of learning the fate of Luke’s father, my favorite moment in cinema ever. From Luke, to Broadway, to the incredible voice acting, Mark Hamill is a treasure!
Agreed!✅ I was 20 and on tour in the Northeast that winter/Spring. For a solid month, I avoided all the newsstands or media until I got home a good week after ESB had opened. Even still, a tiny hint of a ‘shocker’ escaped and like a little kid, I held my fingers over my ears humming when unable to escape. I was standing in line at Ciné Capri to see it that next night after getting home hearing plot details publicly and plugged my ears (I’d forgotten my Walkman) while humming and staring them down. I think they got the hint - haha. All those opening credits loud befuddled gasps of “Episode FIVE⁉” were indelible memories. So glad that scene in Empire was not spoiled - as well as cliffhanger answered in ROTJ. I pretty much figured out that Ben had kinda told a white lie in order for it to logically be true. We had to wait another 3 years to have our answers back then. I was the premiere and the audience ROARED with approval. Fantastic cinematic experience. Almost as good as the Rebel Blockade Runner chased by the Imperial Star Destroyer opening scene in the original.🥰
I wish they would make a movie where Mark plays old Hedi master Skywalker telling younglings storues of his adventures as a young jedi knight, and Sebastian Stan could be young Luke. A great story where he faces great danger and an dangerous foe and the battle ends on a cliffhanger where the foe disappears, only to emerge in the present where Marks Luke has to finish the fight. Pleeaaaaase Disney!! Give us this before Mark is just to old.
For 40 years you grow up with a character, a beloved character like Luke, you imagine as a child to become that character or at least "fight" the empire beside him. You create stories of adventure in your mind. And for as much as I understand as an adult that HE is only a fictional being, a character in a vast storyline, .... the truth is I will NEVER get enough of Luke Skywalker (as a 25 year old or a 70+ year old) or even better.... I will never get enough of Mark Hamill. Both the Character and the Actor will always be the foundation of my youth and my adulthood. Mark deserves to know that us "fans" are willing to go on the ride with Mark, wherever that takes him from beginning to end.
I always watch CBS Sunday morning. Don't know how I missed this! I must have been asleep. Being one of those people that was there in 1977 at a hometown theater (and still a Mark Hamill fan) this was so special to me. Thank you so much for the interview!!
I stopped watching after Force Awakens but Mark has matured the role deeply since his cowlicked beginnings (Empire still the best for its sheer reality of life lessons).
i am 52 this was kinda touching and scary im so jaded on star wars these days but to see my childhood idol at 71 man that puts its all in propective i feel really old now
The story of Luke Skywalker inspired me to reconnect with my father and help him get back on his feet. To 'redeem' him how Luke helped redeem his own father by reminding him of the good inside him! I appreciate you so much Luke, Mark Hamill, and George Lucas.
The fact that Disney isn’t making content with old Luke while Mark is still here is an absolute tragedy
Uh, they did, and he looked old and tired and worn out and depressed. Not his fault but Disney's.
They did and they ruined his legacy because Rey stole it

Luke Skywalker is such a monumental figure in so many of our memories it seems like Mark was destined to be him and was always him before the movies were even made, but he was just a normal dude who happened to fit the part
He would have been on tv on Eight is Enough
@@Mxyzptlksac He might've gotten William Katt's role in The Greatest American Hero, if William Katt had won the audition to play Luke.
I heard Shaun Cassidy wanted the role of Luke? I just laugh thinking about that.
@@jedijones I said Eight is Enough because Mark was in the pilot as David Bradford, and he got out of his contract to be in Star Wars.
I am from Ukraine and I came to watch an interview of my beloved actor. Thank you for mentioning my country. Thanks to Mark for everything he does for our country. He is a wonderful person both on the screen and in life. May the Force be with him.
Love Mark Hamill. Such a decent guy and a good role model for when I was a kid, and especially for kids these days.
Love him as Luke, but love him even more as a person and as a VA. He will always be the best Joker, just like Kevin Conroy will always be the best Batman (VA-wise at least). He looks great, glad he is still active in the business!
Thing I like about him is that he seems like genuinely nice guy.
He’s incredibly gifted, his imitations of others is incredibly accurate
He has always seemed like a sincere, genuine, kind, decent human being. He looks and sounds great, and seems happy. Wishing him and his family all the best.
He seems like such a good person.
We always need Luke no matter what age, time or place, thank you Mark Hamill, you’re the best.
Yes, indeed! The Force will be with you... Always! 👍👍👍😄
Mark was my childhood. I remember going the drive in to see the movie
No matter what, you can always count on Mark Hamill being entertaining to listen to.
Yup
The excess fame as Luke meant that he ended up being a spectacular voice artist, so I'd still call that a win.
Fire Lord Ozai agrees.
Star Wars, Empire and Jedi theatrical releases will always have a special place in my heart. I can watch them over and over again and it takes me back to my childhood, where I fell in love with all of the characters. Those 3 movies will never be topped in my opinion.
We need Luke and more Hamill in Star Wars movies!
Not the sequel Luke, more OT Luke.
Mark, you will always be that actor from the movie Corvette Summer.
Corvette Summer for the Win!!!!
I saw it when it first came out in 1977, I was 16 year old, lol. I saw it twice with friends. Wow, so long ago, I'm 62 now.
As long as we forget Disney's Sequel Trilogy and focus on the OT - of course Luke Skywalker and Mark Hamill will always be legendary!
Meeting Mark Hamill with my son was a true pleasure. He is a true gentleman and professional. MYTFBWY
The amount of love and respect he has for his fans is amazing and he just overall seems like a really fun guy to hang out with 😁
Probably the one hero of mine I could meet and actually get along with. ❤
Star Wars was the first movie I ever saw in the movie theater. Mark Hamill's performance as Luke Skywalker will always be a part of my childhood.
Hamill is such an amazing person. He has touched millions of lives with his work, and yet is humble and appreciative of the fans adoration.
Great interview. Mark has grown into a funny story cornucopia. Just seeing him smile and content gives me joy.
She’s right, we will always need Luke Skywalker.
Someone tell Disney
@@Thorerthedwarf Disney: FU
Mark Hamill's one of the most kindest, nicest, and most legendary actors to ever walk the planet. More of him, each year, makes my heart beam with pride. I'm sure Carrie Fisher is smiling down upon him, each and every day, too. 🤟
Nah, she’s flipping him off with both hands lol
You're a real one Mark, we love you!
Ive been watching Star Wars since the 80s and I just think Hamills work on the Last Jedi was so great, if not, awesome.
Bold direction for the character.
So much Respect for Mark Hamill
He will always be the hero Luke Skywalker was in the original Star Wars films
I don't why I tear up everytime I hear that iconic theme song and hear those words
Mark Hamill your a true treasure to us all... thank you for making our childhood a bit brighter.
Very few actors actually want to do franchise films and blockbusters, they do it for the paycheque.
he's lazy......
Thank you Mark for all you have done sir. Much respect.
The impressions are insanely tremendous.
The force is with him. He looks great at 71!
ONE HIT WONDER whose resume is 99percent voice overs.
Guess CBS found Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker to be *especially* forgettable
@@TheresaPowers Says the NO-HIT WONDER whose resume is all trolling.
@@TheresaPowers He's forever a part of pop culture, what are you?
Han shot first and Luke knew it was his sister.
Mark , you are Luke Skywalker , a Jedi … and , millions, and millions of people , love you as that !!!
The BEST Star Wars moment was The Mandalorian, Season 2 episode 16. It doesn't get better than that!
They did a great job with that. The Mandalorian is Awesome.
Yes, that was awesome 🙂 kind of wish all that was the basis for the last trilogy 😅
Agreed. I literally could not breathe.
@@Mrs.Deanna_Ember well….let me tell you a story……!
@@leeh4722 lol no, but thank you. Those shows should've been the last trilogy.
Hamil is the GOAT. Best voice of joker and arguably best star wars character
I love that man. Via Star Wars and his voice acting (he is my favorite animated version of the Joker) he has given joy to millions of people around the globe 😊
Even though there's a 'Mt Everest' of talent in the movie industry if I had to pick one to meet, it would be Mr Hamill. Luke was that special. 😎
If I met Mark Hamil and got to talk to him for just 2 minutes my life would be complete.
This interview made me cry so much
Luke is an honorable fellow, forever. If you know, you know.
Well considering he did nothing but die in the second movie, I would say you missed out on nothing.
*8:02** This is why he is adored universally. A man who didnt expect or want fame, he just wanted to make a living.*
He did well playing a villian on CRIMINAL MINDS

i am 52 this was kinda touching and scary im so jaded on star wars these days but to see my childhood idol at 71 man that puts its all in propective i feel really old now
The sequels straight up trashed Luke Skywalker and all other legacy characters. We the fans will always want Luke Skywalker!
May the force be with you.
I love Mark! His voice impressions are amazing!! LUKE SKYWALKER FOREVER!!!
The story of Luke Skywalker inspired me to reconnect with my father and help him get back on his feet. To 'redeem' him how Luke helped redeem his own father by reminding him of the good inside him! I appreciate you so much Luke, Mark Hamill, and George Lucas.
He looks great
he is star wars. my favorite character
