Still learning on how the Audio works in rigs like this. I have a smaller Sony A7siii rig. Really like the use of a Video monitor, not just for recording but for framing.
Although I'm a Canon user, most of your lessons and even gear, transfer to my gear as well. What I learned about in this episode is dummy batteries. I didn't realize that Canon's $180 adapter kit was nothing more than a $20 dummy battery! Great work and info, Ray!
Very nice Ray. I had not seen this video but I recently built a similar rig using our Sony a7RIII in a Tilta cage. We also have the Sony 28-135 zoom lens on the camera, a CAME-TV V-mount battery plate on the back end and the same Tascam mixer as you. We use a mattebox with its own rod supports and it fits the zoom lens perfectly so that is also our lens support. I put 19" rods on and that gives me enough room up front for the zoom lens/mattebox and on the back end so I'm able to move the mixer back far enough so I can still get to the back end of the a7RIII and even tilt the screen up for better viewing. I put the Atomos Ninja V on the top handle. I don't usually have a shotgun on the rig but when I need it, there's no problem adding it to the Tilta cage. I have a very nice ergonomic grip on the right side of the cage that also has a stop/start button on it to trigger recording on the camera/Atomos. I do not have a shoulder pad to add to this rig because we never shoot handheld without a gimbal and we have our Sony a7SIII for that. I was wondering if there was a way to power the mixer from the V-mount battery and you showed that to us so, thanks. I'll try that idea. Thanks for sharing. I have a photo of the rig but I couldn't figure out how to attach to these comments.
Raymond....great video. Thanks to your past tutorials I have built the same rig minus the tascam..everything works fine. The most difficult part is carrying the complete rig (minus tripod) out of the house and into the car. Also enjoyed your video on the floods in Pacific north coast. Hard to believe that people call global warming....fake news.
Glad to help. I feel your pain regarding transportation. I've pressed an old camera bag, stripped of dividers, into service, but plan to get a large hard case so I can keep everything assembled. Yup, anyone paying attention was aware 3 decades ago that we had a problem. Hell, scientists like Svante Arrhenius had the greenhouse effect and relation to industrial emissions figured before 1900.
Nice set-up Ray. I'm still figuring out the back end of my rig, with the v-mount and external audio, as I often use a shoulder mount at the very back of the rods. I do like the Tascam unit you chose, it's a great size and shape for the set-up.
Another great video. The only thing that would trip me up is blocking the z6 screen with the audio recorder. Any thing you need to adjust on the camera you got pull it off. Do you find the f mount 24-70 noisy for video. It’s great lens but I hear it - but the Z lens version is totally quiet. Keep up the great content.
Thanks Jon. Yes, as I say, I need some longer rails to pull off this particular configuration (with the 24-70 or similar length lens). It's also possible to hang the Tascam but I temporarily removed the bracket with built-in ¼/20. Really, most adjustments are still available except touch-focus and, of course, the Ninja is there for things like exposure tools. As for the f-mount 24-70, yes focus noise is audible but hasn't caused a great deal of trouble. I do plan to replace it with the Z version, like I have the 70-200. All the Z lenses are superior in this and many other ways. In relation to video, they also have virtually no focus breathing.
Hi Raymond, Can see why need a Z9 now will make a lot lighter load than this Z6 setup to carry around. But not on the bank balance. As the required speed and size 512GB CF Express Cards £600 each in UK. Time will tell as like you have ordered my Z9 hopefully sometime delivery next year. Regards Nigel
You hit the nail on the head, Jayden. And, yes, it's the storage AND processing of 8K that has to be considered shooting internally with the Z9 -- I stressed that in all my videos on the Z9. But the other thing: I'll have 2 rigs capable of shooting 10-bit log footage. I think we're all wondering when we can expect delivery. 512GB cards here run over $800CA.
It looks very professional and the Z6 was touted as a good video camera. I’m not into video much, but using it more, playing with Da Vinci Resolve, which I like a lot. I would not build out a rig like yours, but a Ninja V and gimbal might be a possibility. Would really need a reason to even do that, realistically.
Thank you for your nice Video! Did you test the Audio Quality Difference between the Tascam Recorder on the one hand and connecting the Mic directly to the Ninja V ?
Ray, I may have asked you this before and don’t recall getting an answer, but why do you need a tascam if you have the Ninja? Doesn’t the Ninja record both video and sound? Is it because of better audio quality out of the Tascam? Thanks, Tom KC3QAC
Hi Ray thank you for doing this ekip I love it and I am try to get all component to do on my Z6, i have a question it's connect the monitor to D tap, I see the cable you have list , but on the monitor Nija plate to D tap how can i buy that plate? thank you
If I'm understanding your question, the plate is first in the list in the description: SmallRig V-Mount Battery Adapter Plate with 15mm LWS Rod Clamp & Adjustable Arm 3204: (B&H) bhpho.to/3G2TYHk Most V-mount batteries also have a D-Tap outlet.
Hi Zak. A lot depends on environment. With the Røde NTG2 I'm recording externally to the Tascam, so try to keep to the usual -12db for voices. For the Go, I try to keep the camera gain down (around 4-5) and high on the Go transmitter. It's a bit more guesswork on the latter.
Thanks for the question, Frank. There isn't really anything that needs to be changed via the LCD once settings are dialled in. Having said that, as per video, a simple fix is to use slightly longer rails (which is what I ultimately did).
@@RaymondParkerPhoto Txs Ray, I have followed your setup for the Z6 Rig setup. Parts are coming in and have to head to point Roberts for pick up. I want to have it ready for Maui in April videoing the surfers and Watefalls. Cheers
@@timelapsescapes If you're using the Tascam DR 60D MKII, it can also be hung under the rails with the included top bracket (I removed it for my setup), though this makes the rig not quite so compact. Enjoy your trip.

Are you building a video rig? Have you built one? What solutions have you discovered that work for you or you think would be useful to others?

Thanks for sharing! I think I might switch all my Sony Video gear over to Nikon once the Nikon Z6iii comes out.
Go for it!
Ray, you should start your own production company with this monster rig. Hollywood will be calling. 😜

As I mentioned in both videos, Thomas, I often record right into camera or Ninja via the Røde Wireless Go system, in "run and gun" mode.

@RaymondParkerPhoto is there any advantage or disadvantage goin with SmallRig EN-EL15 Dummy Battery 3247 vs a d-tap dummy battery?
Not that I know of. As long as it supplies the correct power. Neewer makes one, I think.
