Hail MAESTRO Ilayaraja for such a romantic duet! Hmmm....The absence of SPB is deeply felt!!!!!!!!! Sorry Karthik, nothing against you! POOR expressions (SPB POURS in expressions like the Angel Falls / Niagara falls into every song). BUT the mighty bronze voiced man with amazing modulation / dynamics / expressions / breath control is a LEGEND for a reason! Even the legendary Chitra could not match SJ. But then that's why SPB, SJ, KJY, PS, PBS, TMS form the Tier-1 of India's topmost singers from the South!
I don't get this. Karthik is one of the modern singers who is so expressive in playback singing, his songs are testaments. He also purs in emotions in his concerts. But in Ilayaraja concerts, he's like a robot. Is he trying to be very careful with the technicals??? Of course most of the songs he attempt in Raja concert are substandard, he can do better but only with deep emotions. I find it is lacking badly in Raja concerts.

IR songs are deceivingly simple. Nevertheless, Karthik is one amongst the few good singers (in the post-2K bunch). But I prefer Haricharan to Karthik any day, not to despise the latter.

Pravin Kumar Actually Karthik has the potential to dethrone SPB. He just needs to focus on his voice. He badly needs to develop it and make it out of the world. An ideal voice for him is thick, deep, manly, matured, powerful, strong sonorous, immaculate, mellifluous, silky smooth, sweet, melodious voice. Most importantly, a strong, solid low pitch voice plus an extremely powerful and magical high pitch voice. In addition, he should maximise his vocal range. For low pitch, he needs to develop bass whilst smoothness and power for high pitch with the WOW factor. That is a complete package of a male singer's voice and for Karthik's current voice, I find his voice will surely drastically enhance if he does what I mentioned. Well, currently his voice isn't bad but nowhere SPB. Even Haricharan is way awesome especially high pitch rendition. Plus, more important is Karthik should abide by the basic singer's voice rules for instance, no shouting, screaming, unnecessary over high pitch and live concerts in professional studio kinda setting unless he performs for Illaiyaraja or other composers' or singers' concerts. That's it. To make it short, Karthik should take rest from playback singing and go for whatever course such as vocal therapy and so on to recover his old voice (those days his voice was awesome and had many of the qualities I mentioned above) and develop it till maximum. And he should be capable to produce magic even in live concerts (not just playback recording studio) and develop a variety ranges of voices. Essentially, he should not struggle at all when singing especially low pitch long vocals or high pitch long vocals. At times he struggles at high pitch short vocals. He should recover that. Meanwhile, he can test, experiment and deliver his voice via live concerts say 1900's songs, his old songs and latest songs to notice any improvement. I feel that will help. What I can say, his overexposure in live events led to him traveling, overworking, overusing voice beyond the limit plus robbed his sleeping hours. All these pretty sure screwed his voice. Make it short, Karthik should just focus on his voice and vocals plus pitching.
