There was another weapon back in D1 related to Red Death but Im not sure if theres any lore on it as it was a legendary, the Red Spectre which was an auto rifle. Ive always assumed that the Red Death was someones attempt at creating a modified version of the Bad Juju seeing as how they are both pulse rifles that were created from other weapon frames (scout rifle frame in the case of Bad Juju and auto rifle frame in the case of Red Death), that they give effects upon killing something, and that they both have a sort of life to them
The whole thing was Red Death was an extremely modified auto rifle with ill intention and its base model was what red spectre was. We just didn't see it get nass produced for us to use under that specific name until long after Red Death was well known. I mean if you look at its build you can see some of its parts in blue and lower rareity weapons from back in D1 and now. Similar thing with Bad Juju very clearly having a scout body but being a lightweight pulse that has built in full auto while being a burst fire weapon. Hell you can even say we learned from them when we got exotic khvostov in D1 because you could run it as an auto, single fire or burst even though it was coded as an auto rifle and other things like Wicked Implement very clearly being a modified Veist scout which are ALWAYS RAPID FIRES BUT FOR SOME REASON BUNGIE MADE IT A PRECISION SCOUT. Even before we saw the ornament just on the shape and profile of the gun it was obviously Veist. Bungie just does stuff like this for storytelling purposes. The only time it goes deeper is when weird glitches happen like D1 Outbreak and Red Death having auto rifle recoil so they feel significantly smoother to shoot than other pulses with similar stats that were so iconic that bungie replicated the glitch when they rebuilt the weapons for D2.

Red Death was the first Exotic I got in D1 and it’s been my favorite weapon ever since. Just getting it back and seeing that it’s had its purpose renewed that also ties into its new Solar element is just the chef’s kiss on this story
REMINDER: this thing has scared Zavala, Ikora, and Shaxx so much their official policy is destroy it on sight. We have two copies of this and killed god knows how many
Personally I think the story of the red death confirms something I've thought for years: we guardian influence our gear as we use it. We are channeling our light through or around our weapons and armor all the time as we fight so its not that far fetched to think that over time an impression is made. Look at Ace of Spades and Last Word, they both have perks that speak to the original users and influence our use of them. When you pick up last word you are suddenly really good at hipfireing and using a single action revolver. What if thats the lingering impression of Shin on the gun causing it guide you as you use it? Ace acts like a mini golden gun to an extent with its firefly and Cade used it as a channel for his golden gun as seen during the red war. Also some exotic armors have lore tabs that seem to describe their origins if this were true like the Ursa Furiosa on titan tells of a guardian deciding that they would hold the line no matter what as they held back the invading fallen as civilians escaped down the tunnel they were in. For those that don't know, Ursa is all about improving your block on sentinel and making you able to recharge your super by blocking.
My personal head cannon is the 3rd Darkness subclass, which is red and related to desire, blood, and rage called "Sanguine" and it infects people with a lust for power, seducing them, and granting them that power in the form of a bloodlust they can not quench. Hence Red Death and Crimson were created.
I love how mysterious the Red Death's lore is behind whoever this "Butcher" of 9 Guardians is. I wonder who this Guardian was? Love ya @MyNameIsByf! Great video as always my man! God bless you to you from Kentucky, USA! 😊
So a few reasons why in destiny guns are sentient in some way, the material it's made from/enemies influence, (hawkmoon as an example made from the traveler metal and led crow and our guardian to find it), some enemies we've shoved into a gun or ai/ai of the vex as a gun, (whisper, darci, vex mythocloast, etc etc) and it is seeming like this influence of the weilders own light now, (lumina, red death, and crimson)
So here's my thing: We know Guardians can manifest, at the very least, basic forms of sentient life. Stuff like Child of the Old God, Threadlings, Hellions. Even if you say those things arent "sentient" in the traditional sense, the super charged version of Arc Souls are explicitly described as "Sentient Arc Souls". At the very least, these things can understand their creators intent and preform a task accordingly. So my question is this: we know that weapons in Destiny can be enhanced with the Light, at the very least temporarily through things like radiant. Would it be far off to think that through prolonged exposure to someone's Light, that a weapon could gain sentience itself?
Loved this video, it reminded me of the time when I was getting ready for D2s launch and I stopped playing D1 fairly early on after the campaign and only dabbled after that because I thought it had no story. Thanks for all of the great hours of entertainment and information
Does Reforged count then, as a Weapon of Hope? It was dismantled, cleaned, and ultimately _cleansed_ of the malice and very likely a literal curse, and now it has a sliver of Solar Light at its core which is healing Guardians instead of killing them. To my understanding that fits the criteria.
Nice to see a lore video without any Bungie drama attached. I almost forgot the reason I subscribed to this channel. Fantastic storytelling as always. Thank you Byf!
I know that you'll eventually talk about the imge for the Vesper's Host dungeon. But in my opinion, the gateway structure shown is possibly the same one seen in the skybox in both the Tangled Shore and Dreaming City which Guardains use to reach the latter. Perhaps it takes players to the space betweeen the Ascendant Plane and Reality as Fikrul's house tries to punch their way through via this gateway.
While I love the existential/metaphysical lore of this game, I miss having small pieces like this, that show when guardians can actually be a threat. I really wish that we could fight against an actual Guardian for a Season
Its good to hear more about the cursed weapons of Destiny so thanks for this. Never really knew Red Death's lore. Hopefully they expand upon it and Crimson at some point.
Just want to point this out to get the ball rolling on this but Ana Bray is a famous Hunter Gunslinger who was so strong with the light she created pools of light with the golden gun. Not once in the entirety of D2 did she ever did that which would have been epic final fight during the final shape
Hey byf, recently i was replaying a mission during the beyond light campaign when u visit the pyramid and I discovered what seemed to be blind legion cabal corpses littered throughout the enterance.
This is some of your best storytelling I loved the way you scripted this one. Too bad the game is in the state it’s been this will probably be a lore video people will watch once our friends have a reason to get back into this game.
Makes a lot of sense to diversify your portfolio, especially with the volatility and uncertainty surrounding destiny. I'm a big bioware and dragon age fan so down for that 100%
I feel like the making of this weapon is just a more natural way to do what the hive crafted Weapons of Sorrow out of. It lacks the hive magic soulfire aspect of those weapons, but it's just guardian light doing the same thing, without the specific avenue or flavor. So while Red Death and maybe even Crimson might not be 'Weapons of Sorrow', RDR and Lumina are absolutely sibling weapons of redemption... with or without caps
So possibly since we know that darkness holds memory it could be possible that by butchering something from the light in such a horrific manner it created an opposite reaction of darkness (like ghost) that then attached itself to red death. And when it was cleansed it said “the shadows burn away, one by one, until none were left” could possibly be the each guardian that was killed and butchered by the butcher. As well as the butcher focusing the power of the darkness to make the weapon into a more blood thirsty thing and due to the fact there was no hive magic or complicated ritual that truly gave the weapon will so it was relatively easy (a single guardian using just solar light) to purify it. But I can see how many different idea can be made to the actual reason behind this since we no next to nothing about anyone or anything directly related to the butcher or even the killings
I think the Red death is a clear-cut example of a Guardians ability 2 channel both the light and the dark. After beyond light after beyond light our understanding of how the light and dark works what's significantly recalled. When know that that the Darkness is rooted in the mind, and the Lights is rooted in reality. Every Guardian is capable of wielding the Darkness as much as the light. Say that potentially there was a guardian whose mind was so malicious, their thoughts were so rooted in one specific way, that they unconsciously tapped into the darkness. The Red death civility is very Darkness-Like, combine that with the lights reality warping properties, and you have a weapon that's come into being capable of a "Curse" through an unconscious bridge between the Lights & The Darkness.
Hey Byf just wanted to leave a possible video series idea. Since you've ranked how strong our enemies are in lore before, I'm surprised that the same hasn't been done for us The Guardian. Out of curiosity I tired to search for videos of yours of the power of our player guardian, but i can't seem to find any. So I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one that would like to see a possible mini series of how strong our player guardian is (Hunter, Titan, and Warlock) in lore from you at some point, if you decide it's a good enough idea for you to try to make into a video of course. It could be called "The True Power Series' so you could explore the in lore power of other guardians and a well like Ikora, Zavala, etc. P.S love the work and hope you actually read this!
I remember vaguely about the fwc using their machine on a hunter who saw a perfect blade and remembered something about maybe being the bayonet of the red death, could it be the blade that's cursed
So theoretically is the emotions of the wielder attuned paracausally? Hawkmoon is another weapon that comes to mind as in its lore Savathun is confused on the feeling that is there is in herself and between the Guardian and Crow but the weapon is paracausally attuned and built on purpose as well
I personally believe that since guardians make their own fate and the thing that makes our weapons so effective is us infusing them with our light (the old lore of how guardians wield golden gun and what would happen when they tried to do it with anything but a hand cannon, weapons of light, radiance, even us just upgrading them with motes of light ect.) that some peice of our wills or intent lingers in the weapons if we use them enough and our wills all strong enough. I mean before the retcons we always debated which exotics and unique legendaries were weapons of sorrow and even if a weapon didn't have that title they were definitely corrupted, just look at bad juju and other weapons that share ties to Toland, the Shattered like Deathbringer. Even though we very specifically crafted that weapon to wield the power of the deathsingers song itself it is still a weapon on light that very heavily resembles a shattered slovabomb. Alternatively look at reforged hawkmoon and crows story as a whole: Its arguably only wrapping up with the release of the still hunt quest and all Crows interactions with Cayde... who just so happened to figure out how to shove golden gun light into a gun so effectively that not only does it not explode in your hands but the process is so seemless even a warlock and titan can do it. Just some really neat threads. Imma leave it there before I start rambling
I love how our guardians Just use this weapon and crimson and don't get told off by Zavala Or shaxx to stop using them like who in the right mind wouldn't
IIRC, The Red Death was stolen from the Butcher's first victim and turned into what it became. So I'm wondering, if it's cursed, if it's some sort of curse of vengeance. Corrupted by the hatred of the person who was killed.
Do Engrams Have Souls? We all know we make gods into weapons, but what if weapons in fact have a bit of a soul in them themselves? Like AI. Many exotics are already assisted by AI so thats not a stretch I think. What if the exotic engram network is like a storage for the patterns of exotic weapons. My interpretation is that the pattern of Red Death is cursed on the network, and why the Vanguard advices to destroy it on sight
So hear me out multiple guardians have Red Death what if it's a calling card like how sometimes the serial killer will leave behind a clue what if the person that was killed wasn't actually the butcher but rather the butcher leaves behind cursed weapons that taint or corrupt other guardians into following his work
We need a Season of the Warlord, I think a resurrected Warlord from the before times got Rez'd by an echo of the Witness and goes in a quest to attain ultimate power by becoming the Last Disciple and get revenge on a certain fool who thinks himself the "Last Warlord", Lord Shax. And maybe have a secret plot where the only reasons he why he wants ultimate power. They rember their first life and the family they lost during yee olden times and wants to bring them back. Because sympathetic villains are all the rage these days.
*A Hunter, lone in his actions, and intent. Carriers the instrument he clings to, even more than his Ghost. Crimson. A hand cannon outlawed by the Vanguard. But the bloodshed he feeds the bladed weapon, only causes it to crave more. So he shows his commitment. With each shot, each stab of the Crimson into a Guardian’s heart, the Crimson hungers for more. So, the Hunter adds 7 more notches of dead Guardians to his dreaded hand cannon. A foul, barbarous Warlock encounters the Hunter in The Anomaly. The Hunter notices the cousin of Crimson. Red Death. Its predecessor. The two lock eyes and aim their infamous instruments of slaughter. But then, they hear other Guardians calling them. A trio, a fireteam, wearing Vanguard insignia. Likely came to investigate the dead Ghosts from yesterday’s Crucible match. The sadistic duo, thirsty with bloodlust, notices the blood has dried from their weapons. They must be sated, soaked with slaughter. Within minutes, the fireteam are dead.*
i think its entirely possible that red death is made of hadium. sure its still unlikely however its the only metal we know of that can be paracausally attuned
It's cool that this bit of lore shows us just how a Guardian attunes their weapon to carry a Paracausal element.

Red Death: Guh-huh Murder! I love murder! The demons told me to! I'll f**kin do it again!
Khorne is that you??
It is in my opinion that our swords from D1 are the strongest in-universe weapons we have ever used. Not counting relic weapons.
I wasn’t expecting a Red Death Redemption (heh) Arc
12:43 was he holding back a chuckle? Lmao byf broke character. Can’t blame him, that lore entry made me laugh too 😭
The Butcher is a memeber of the Skrank Gang
The bay harbour butcher
I think sun wukong needs his story told..
Ive always wondered if this gun was a clever reference to Worm by Wildbow. It wouldnt be the first one in Destiny
I hope we get to meet aunor and shin in game someday
There was a weapon that did the inverse: the lumina. We helped cleanse it.
Cant believe red death was the bay harbor buther all along
Can't believe the red death was the bay harbor butcher
I love how our guardians Just use this weapon and crimson and don't get told off by Zavala Or shaxx to stop using them like who in the right mind wouldn't
The mythology and spiritualism surrounding the katana in feudal Japanese culture would like a word, Lore Father.
IIRC, The Red Death was stolen from the Butcher's first victim and turned into what it became. So I'm wondering, if it's cursed, if it's some sort of curse of vengeance. Corrupted by the hatred of the person who was killed.
Still one of my favorite weapons, but I’m just sad I’ll never get the original look for it. Considering I’ve been off destiny for months now.
Catching up on the channel now that power and internet are back (F U Helene!)--thanks so much for the video Byf!
Only reason why I came back to D2 is cause of “The Red Death” and final shape too I guess. in my head cannon this is MY Guardians weapons.
We need a weapon that's half purified and half corrupted, or prismatic
So hear me out multiple guardians have Red Death what if it's a calling card like how sometimes the serial killer will leave behind a clue what if the person that was killed wasn't actually the butcher but rather the butcher leaves behind cursed weapons that taint or corrupt other guardians into following his work
It's funny how red death is a reference to red dead redemption
Thanks for the info dump, lore daddy
I need MORE black armory lore pleaseeee I BEEG YOU MAKE SOME VIDEOES PLEASE
we dont talk about crimson
Whats Crimson
Lumina was a opposite thorn though made by us…
We need a Season of the Warlord, I think a resurrected Warlord from the before times got Rez'd by an echo of the Witness and goes in a quest to attain ultimate power by becoming the Last Disciple and get revenge on a certain fool who thinks himself the "Last Warlord", Lord Shax.
6:20 So, when do we get the purified version and how close is it to Lumina?
I loved everything in this video... destiny 4 LIFE 🧬
Poor Ecthar xD
This man said “taint” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
i think its entirely possible that red death is made of hadium. sure its still unlikely however its the only metal we know of that can be paracausally attuned
Guardians imbue all weapons they use with paracausal energy. No hadium needed
@@Penguinman2.0 but thats only temporarily. that same gun in the hands of a redjack will not be paracausual. hadium is more permanent
@@SivaExperiment yeah for sure, just being nitpicky lol
Finally, this is the type of videos ppl want. About time
