As someone who plays a hacked Wii nearly everyday, I can confirm Nintendont is fantastic for GameCube games and USB Loader GX for Wii games. It doesn’t emulate them of course, it just plays them natively.
Yeah I can relate. Spent about a year pimping my Wii out - painstakingly going through every emulator/rom to make sure they played...and of course cramming as much stuff as possible. Still love it - still play it.
The weird noises and visuals on the ZX Spectrum emulator was the game itself loading. That's how ZX Spectrum games look and sound while they're loading, because ZX Spectrum games were mostly distributed on tape. Looks like the emulator doesn't support the "Fast Load" option that's on most other Spectrum emulators.
37:40 That's supposed to happen!! The screeching audio/flashing bars are the game being loaded into the Spectrum's RAM in cassette format. As foreign as it sounds to American home computer users, games on cassette were much more common than cartridges outside North America (mostly in Europe, which is where the Spectrum's primary market was anyway)
I had stunt race FX as a kid, it was surprisingly good. I thought it was great how you could drive underwater in that glass tunnel in one of the stages.
Hmm, here's a tip if you ever do one of these kinds of videos again: If you ever run across another NEC PC98 emulator, I believe you should be testing Touhou in it. People that emulate that system are generally in it for one of two things: early Visual Novels sort of games or to see the original Touhou games. It'd be more useful to see those running, then, as those would be the games people would most likely boot in it.
Virtual Console and Emulation is the true legacy of the Nintendo Wii. Motion Controls were only used to sell the system but we can all see that this was a gimmick that aged badly. Some were good but most motion controlled games were just made to trick non-gaming families into buying them. Almost like what happened to the games on the Atari 2600 and the NES that had many games that were just junk.
The true blessing and to me the #1 reason to use a Wii to emulate old games instead of my gaming PC, is that the Wii can effortlessly connect to a CRT TV and at least here in Europe, if connected through a SCART RGB cable is capable of displaying those games at real 240p with authentic scanlines. Even if the emulation itself might not be 100% accurate in some cases, it doesn't get more authentic then that ! No modern console/computer can do that. I'll keep my Wii 4ever 😁
I just like being able to play on the couch without moving my pc everytime cause all the retro games i play are usually around snes era. so the wii was fine for me since I had it laying about. Still use it to this day once in a while to play some mario or castlevania thanks to virtual console and snes9x for light gun games.
I don't see how this video doesn't have more views. This video covered EVERYTHING, and you did it very well, I might add 🙂. With the exception of a PC, the Wii is one of the best emulation beasts there is.
I used to play emulators on my Wii all the time. The best are the Snes and GBA. They seem to run almost 100% for me. 64 games are playable, but usually too glitchy to really enjoy fully. I'm glad I'm not the only one that had trouble loading roms in some of the other systems especially the PC, Dos, and Mame emulators. They aren't very user friendly plus with lots of compatibility errors, it can be very stressful to even get working. Thanks for going through all this effort, I know how much work this was. There's also nintendon't for gamecube. Its not really emulating because it uses the gamecube hardware built in, but it would be nice to include.
@@Bubba__Sawyer you can connect it using a usb cable to the back of the wii. As far as i am aware nintendont is the only piece of software that supports this
I don't know how I haven't heard of WiiMednafen, but it sounds like the overall best emulator for Wii Homebrew. I also remember the first emulators on the Wii back when the Twilight Hack was still the method of accessing homebrew, and the "Homebrew Channel" wasn't an actual channel yet. There were some older versions of SNES, NES, and Genesis emulators, and not a whole lot else that I can remember.
You forgot to mention Snes9x RX, which is a GX fork focused on full speed for heavy games, like the FX ones. BTW, mGBA is *not* the WiiMednafen's core, but an old version of VisualBoy Advance. Also, the reason why you were seeing extra things emulating Game Gear on GenesisPlusGX is because you had the GG Screen option set to Extended like when you're playing on a Power Base Converter, a misconfiguration on your part.
@@CowboyJoseph64 it does have screen centering, but no screen zoom per se. Nevertheless, it does screen stretching, if that's your jam. I do prefer pixel perfect aspect ratio, tbh.
THANK YOU. The most in-depth view of the current emulators on the Wii. You did an excellent job considering how many you looked at. There are some things you may have overlooked, some emulators actually are probably working as good as the real hardware if set up correctly but I do understand that a lot of the computer based emulators need prior knowledge of the system and often end up being too much trouble for most to bother with. When it comes to WiiMednafen I am in total agreement. I have no idea why more are not singing the praises of this fine emulator. One more you kinda missed which is outstanding is the Cannonball project which brings Out Run to the Wii in a way you won't believe. It is an amazing piece of work, do check it out!

I have nes just to find some random gem but snes is imo the best console ever. In your roms folder in root put all the selected games you like and then keep all the rest in a separate folder so you can explore less known titles.

@DOZR rare It's very easy to do. Download cIOS manager and the IOS you need (just google how to play .wbfs Wii games on your Wii) and once you inatall it, you'll be able to use USBLoader without it crashing. EDIT: It seems that you can just use a WAD manager to install all the necessary IOS. I would recommens doing that. There is a tutorial on UA-cam by Tech James showing how to fix issues with USB Loader by doing this.
just for information. Nintendont can emulate the Game Cube memory card and is compatible with third-party controller. You don't need an early model with GC's memory card and joystick compatibility to boot it. You just need the right configuration for your wii model.
The DSI and the 3DS in DSi mode do the same thing with the crashing. TwiLight Launcher's most stable skin is the default DSi launcher, so make sure to only do that. R4 and AceKard skins either didn't load the saves, or crashed when you loaded a game. Only difference between the DSi and 3DS crashes are the fact that the 3ds needs a hard reboot and dsi could do a soft one, mostly because the soft reboot was a hard reboot and didn't require you to reboot manually

Mednafen is alright on the PC, but being a console-only emulator, a frontend is required. Medneffe seems to work. (This is being done on linux on arch, Mednafen is in the repositories and mednaffe is in the AUR as a binary)
It's pretty simple to get a 4:3 aspect ratio in emulators that don't have the option, most if not all modern TVs have the ability to switch from 16:9 to 4:3 (some remotes have a dedicated button for switching aspect ratios on the fly) and many other aspect ratios.
I can definitely vouch for SNES9x Gx being a great emulator for the Wii. It can be used with pretty much any controller (although I often use a GameCube one myself) and it's got savestates built-in which is really handy. I often use it to play Live-a-Live since my repro cart no longer saves.
Probably! There are also two USB ports on the back of the Wii, so it's safe to assume those types of controllers may work. Plus you've got the ones that pair to the Wii like the Classic Controller.

That disclaimer was painful to listen to. Simulation of theft? No, it’s outright theft. Deleting the files afterward is legally just disposing of evidence. “Yes, I did take that stuff from the warehouse, officer, but I burned it all after I recorded myself using it!” Yeah, admitting to theft _and_ destruction of evidence isn’t a legal defense I’d go with in court... Having said that, I genuinely don’t care, these games should mostly either be free or available cheap anyways. Nintendo _is_ in the right legally, though, since emulation can be shown to hinder sales of virtual console games, as well as uptake of their Switch online membership which comes with NES and SNES emulation and a growing collection of games for both. As I said, I don’t really care, but acting like the good guy while blatantly stealing, then trying to word it in a certain way as to seem more ambiguous than it is? A little bold.
I remember getting on alright with NES lightgun games in the FCEX-whatever-it's-called emulator; allowed me to actually play Duck Hunt in sorta the way it was intended!
Try SuperrSonic's version of RetroArch if you haven't. It gets rid of all the useless settings, allows you to reliably create core-specific and game-specific settings (custom resolutions, browser paths, etc.), rarely crashes and provides the best way to play CPS-1, CPS-2, Neo Geo and SNES games on the Wii IMO. The Snes9x Next core runs everything I've thrown at it perfectly (Contra and Gradius III SA-1 hacks are notable exceptions) and has less input lag than Snes9x GX. Also, it's handy that it comes with 2 NES cores: some games are rendered properly with Nestopia but not with FCEUmm and vice versa.

ZX Spectrum, those flashing lines and noise are completely normal.. that's the loading routine from cassette tapes, TZX files are tape images, as for the crashes at intro screens, those games probably require a different model of Spectrum such as the 128k, also some 48k games refused to load on a 128k and of course 128k games wouldn't load on a 48k Spectrum.. and the C64? you would be hard pressed to find a game on the C64 without joystick support, your problem was you were probably playing a game that used joysyick port 1, the majority of C64 games used port 2 as standard

As for the light gun stuff, maybe Modern Vintage Gamer would take a crack at it?
I had that same problem with the Wii2600 menu and all the Atari 2600 games being stretched out. This is because my Wii was set to display in 16:9 aspect ratio for HDTVs, which means all of the homebrew apps were displayed in 16:9 by default. Some apps have an option to correct for 16:9 aspect ratio, but Wii2600 doesn't have that option, which means it will be stretched to 16:9. Believe me, I checked all through the Wii2600's settings and saw no option to set the aspect ratio to 4:3. The way I corrected this was by going into my Wii's main settings and setting the system's main aspect ratio to 4:3, so now whenever I run Wii2600 on my HDTV, it'll display in proper 4:3. The only issue with this is, if you're playing a Wii or GameCube game that has a widescreen option, you'll have to change Wii's settings back to 16:9 if you want to play those games in widescreen. But if you're like me and use the Wii mostly for retro game emulators, then having your Wii's main aspect ratio set to 4:3 is fine.
The reason why those emulators didn't support 4:3 is because they were actually in 4:3. The Wii only renders a 4:3 framebuffer, which is stretched out to 16:9. Whenever you're running a game in widescreen, it is anamorphic.
With the exception of games on the Xbox that actually run at 720p, that's how all of the 6th and 5th gen consoles did it. I know the Wii isn't 6th gen, but it is still relevant because it's just a super GameCube.

As someone who plays a hacked Wii nearly everyday, I can confirm Nintendont is fantastic for GameCube games and USB Loader GX for Wii games. It doesn’t emulate them of course, it just plays them natively.
Does USB loader gx let you go to the Wii menu from GameCube games? Wiiflow doesn't.
Since I shoved a load of emulators on my Wii years ago it's become a permanent part of my living room.
thescopedogable Dude yes! I’ve had my Wii since ‘07 and just added mores emulators. I play this thing more than my ps4.

Hey there's something you should know about Sega CD games on Genesis Plus GX, music will only play in .bin+.cue versions or iso+ogg combos

Note: VBA GX can do Gameboy Games, Gameboy Color Games, and Gameboy Advanced Games.

@@FrameRater can i use this emulators on a wiiu?
And remember, WiiMednaFen.
I'm disappointed you did'nt end the video on that.
Its not really emulating because it uses the gamecube hardware built in, but it would be nice to include.
mGBA on wii is literally perfect. it plays both crash nitro kart and duke nukem (3D games) at full speed with no problems whatsoever.
Wii emulation is badass. Playing gamecube games with a ps4 controller on my wii is insane. Nice video man. Makes me want to set mine up again.
How does a PS4 controller work on the Wii?
@@Bubba__Sawyer you can connect it using a usb cable to the back of the wii. As far as i am aware nintendont is the only piece of software that supports this
I don't know how I haven't heard of WiiMednafen, but it sounds like the overall best emulator for Wii Homebrew.
I also remember the first emulators on the Wii back when the Twilight Hack was still the method of accessing homebrew, and the "Homebrew Channel" wasn't an actual channel yet. There were some older versions of SNES, NES, and Genesis emulators, and not a whole lot else that I can remember.
How did twilight hack work? How did the old homebrew "channel" work?
You forgot to mention Snes9x RX, which is a GX fork focused on full speed for heavy games, like the FX ones.
BTW, mGBA is *not* the WiiMednafen's core, but an old version of VisualBoy Advance. Also, the reason why you were seeing extra things emulating Game Gear on GenesisPlusGX is because you had the GG Screen option set to Extended like when you're playing on a Power Base Converter, a misconfiguration on your part.
To be fair, I don't think genesis plus gx allows you to zoom in on the screen, so wiimednafen might still be preferable.
@@CowboyJoseph64 it does have screen centering, but no screen zoom per se. Nevertheless, it does screen stretching, if that's your jam. I do prefer pixel perfect aspect ratio, tbh.
@@DrAcOFoto I definitely do too.

If you have wii softmodded, all you need is usb loader (for wii games), snes, nes, gba (gb,gbc), virtual boy emulators. It runs perfectly and so much fun. I have nes just to find some random gem but snes is imo the best console ever. In your roms folder in root put all the selected games you like and then keep all the rest in a separate folder so you can explore less known titles.

What do you need help with?
@DOZR rare
You might be missing an IOS. I want to say it's 249, but I might be wrong.
@DOZR rare
It's very easy to do.
The reason you can't hear anything on air zonk and sonic cd is because it isn't emulating the cd part and the cd part handles the audio in that game.
0:00 Damn, That 80's Camera has Really good Video Quality!
just for information.
Nintendont can emulate the Game Cube memory card and is compatible with third-party controller.
You don't need an early model with GC's memory card and joystick compatibility to boot it. You just need the right configuration for your wii model.
You know, this is a high quality video. Great job this is very thorough.
The Akmenu skin used to crash my 3DS with a Guru Meditation Error screen. The default DSi Menu skin is the more stable.
Excuse me, what is that wii addon/modification?

MAME ROM packs change often. In RetroArch MAME to get them to work correctly you need to check what rom pack the core you're using expects.
That goes for MAME in general too. It's not user friendly but makes sense when you look at the technical reasons for it. Not gonna go in to details about it here.

I hacked my wii back in 2011, has a lot of really cool emulator options. Thanks for covering so many FrameRater, great video.
I downloaded Not64 and Diddy Kong racing, everything was fine, besides one or two minimal graphical errors, but once I beated it, the second run became unplayable, the screen is just white
Something I saw missing, was that mGBA could actually run GB/GBC games. Compatibility used to be hit and miss, but now it crunches through any game you can throw at it at full speed with perfect compatibility, and things are even better on the GBA side of things with it.
Mednafen is alright on the PC, but being a console-only emulator, a frontend is required. Medneffe seems to work.
(This is being done on linux on arch, Mednafen is in the repositories and mednaffe is in the AUR as a binary)
I’m currently writing my own Mednafen frontend. ✌️
It's pretty simple to get a 4:3 aspect ratio in emulators that don't have the option, most if not all modern TVs have the ability to switch from 16:9 to 4:3 (some remotes have a dedicated button for switching aspect ratios on the fly) and many other aspect ratios.
oh my God, the reference to wonderwall is outstanding!
FYI: the DS emulator can be improved with Frameskip. To control Frameskip, use the - and + buttons.
I can definitely vouch for SNES9x Gx being a great emulator for the Wii. It can be used with pretty much any controller (although I often use a GameCube one myself) and it's got savestates built-in which is really handy.
I often use it to play Live-a-Live since my repro cart no longer saves.
How do you use other controllers on the Wii? Do they plug into the GameCube controller ports?
Probably! There are also two USB ports on the back of the Wii, so it's safe to assume those types of controllers may work. Plus you've got the ones that pair to the Wii like the Classic Controller.

I use VBA (and GX) for standard Gameboy/Colour games. It's more convenient to have one emu. Can MGBA run gameboy games too?
Umm, what is that thing connected to your Wii? I've never seen that before.

Otherwise, great video.
It's worth pointing out that the PlayStation emulators don't support light gun mapping with the Wii Remote. So sad. :,(

Sonic CD normally lags on the special stages

@@stedmangg Ohh, I didn't know that. I played Sonic CD on Gen Plus GX on the Wii and I haven't noticed any sort of lag.
@@stedmangg Are you sure? The timer on the top had the seconds running down slower than real-time. Shouldn't an emulator fix console-hardware-specific slowdowns anyways? I mean, if it's truly accurate then I suppose that's cool but it did feel slower than usual to me.
One thing you didn't mention is that VBA GX can also run original Game Boy and Game Boy Color games. I've ran many GB and GBC games in VBA GX and most of them seemed to run fine as far as I could tell. I haven't heard of mGBA before, so I don't know if that runs GB and GBC games. I haven't heard of WiiMednafen either. Is that newer emulator? I'm doing this Wii emulator project getting some ideas from this video and for my experience I disagree with some of the Choice Emulators for Platforms :
These are the best options for me until now:
Atari 2600 - Wii2600
Coleco Vision - WiiColEm
Nintendo:
FCEUX TX - NES (the evolution of fcux gx with more options and runs better) alternative Nestopia in retroarch sounds much better its performance is simliar, but the interface in retroarch could be confusing.
SNES9X GX - Super Nintendo
VBA GX - Game Boy, Game Boy Color , Game Boy Advance
GenPlusGX - Genesis, Master System
WiiMednafen - PC Engine
RetroArch - Neo Geo, CPS1, CPS2, CPS3
N64 works just bad I just have the virtual console games.
Gonna still updating this comment
I'm curious. What makes FCEUX TX better than something like WiiMednafen? FR listed the latter as more pixel-accurate with higher compatibility than the former in the video.
