    The Wii being able to display emulators in both a proper 240p for CRTs and 480p on modern televisions is the killer edge for me. Plus Nintendon't can load Triforce arcade games for F-Zero AX and Mario Kart GP.
    Can't go wrong with either of them though. Both of them were many people's first exposure to softmodding, mine included.

    • @piratebear3126

      @@freshcoat9311 My Life in Gaming went over it in their farewell to the Wii Shop video and a few of their other RGB Master Class videos.
      It's as easy as setting 480i mode in the Wii's settings for official VC releases, and most homebrew emulators have a setting that is 240p or "original" in their video settings.

    • @andrewnorris5415
      @andrewnorris5415 5 років тому +6

      I don't get why this is a "killer edge" - as 480p on the Xbox emulation is exactly the same as 240p - they just duplicate each row. Xbox does 480p on modern TVs no problem. If you really want to play on an old CRT - you're much better getting the original system - for the truly authentic experience - in my opinion. 240p is better than the original systems did but so is a modern display, esp. a plasma, much better colors. So it all depends on preferences. Xbox also does 720p for emulated games, which for the res on some systems scales up better than the Wii which is stuck at 480p.

    • @darkerson
      @darkerson 5 років тому +1

      The other killer edge reason to want to use a CRT instead of an LCD/Plasma/whatever is INPUT LAG.

Also, WiiMotion controls for on-rail shooters, offer a great modern fix, for fans of old-school Light Gun games, on modern HDTVs.

    Their both great machines but if I’m playing on a CRT today, I prefer a soft modded Wii to a soft modded XBox due to native Bluetooth, WiFi and USB 2.0 support. You are right. Modded OG Xbox, Wii or PS2 fat with Hdd are really good and cheap gaming devices with good emulators. I really don't understand why people are spending money on snes mini (emulator), ps1 mini (emulator)or emulation boxes from China. For relative small amount of money you can buy any of this 6th gen. consoles and have really good gaming devices and more! For me this is the best generation of consoles = best games(for me personally)+emulators (xbox and wii have more and better emulators than PS2). As a long fan of video games for me defenetly 6th generation is on 1st place, then 4th is on 2nd place and 5th gen is on 3rd place, after that it doesn't matter to me that much.

      The modern homebrew scene really started on Dreamcast, you should check it out. Still getting so many things brought over to it still to this day. The most recent homebrew port was Tomb Raider 1 which is so awesome. But yes, of course there were homebrew games made for older systems, but porting PC games to a console was really not a thing as big as it is now until the Dreamcast came out and was super easy to develop for. Obviously the OG Xbox and Wii carried on that torch, and don't forget the awesome PSP, HUGE homebrew community on that little powerhouse too! That is also what I like about the OG Xbox, it was literally X86 architecture so it allowed so many PC open sourced game ports and emulators it is crazy.

    I always wanted to have a Gaming Console and today my wish was granted. (Sort of)
    Today i just got a Xbox Original the same Translucent version as MVG have here.
    I turned it On, and it booted and works the DvD drive is dead though since the person who had it said "it's been laying in my pile of tech trash for 4 years or so" so i was skeptical whether it'll work or not but to my surprise it worked AND is also modded! Which is also a good thing perhaps. I'm so happy today that i finally got a Console i always wanted a PS2 since they more common in my country but i'm also glad i got this!
    The only downsight is that he didn't had a Controller or Video component cables for it. I know i can buy them easily (the cable tho) but i won't get the original controller which would've been great.
    Everything's is fine with this but it's missing the DvD tray's front panel.
    Here are some pics :

    If anyone would me to recommend some mods or whether where i can update them then please don't hesitate to ping me :)

      If you have a Samsung DVD drive, try to fix it. They have the best disc compatibility, playing DVD+R DLs & CD-Rs, unlike Thompson & Phillips drives. If you have a V1.6 board (I believe the crystal X-Boxes were), you cannot perform the 128MB RAM upgrade; You need the empty pads on your board. If you step up to a SATA HDD, avoid Kingwin brand adapters as they introduce a long delay on boot. I prefer a hardmod to a softmod as it removes the HDD lock to the motherboard, allowing easy HDD upgrades. The Aladdin chip is very cheap & relatively easy to install; X-Box v1.6s are more of a pain than previous board revisions. Use xbox partitioner 1.3 to fine tune your F & G partitions on large HDDs; I'm using 2, 2TB WD blue label notebook HDDs & a 500GB Samsung Evo 850 solid state in a 3rd X-Box; It boots up very fast.

      I feel like PC just needs good local multi-player support then we’d only need 1 system (unfortunately they gimp the console game ports and remove split screen), because otherwise it’s a great system that is ever evolving and has the horsepower for anything. Plus you can use basically any controller (I can use my Steam controller, my PS3 or PS4 controller, or Xbox if you prefer, or mouse and keyboard or I’ve even done mouse in one hand and controller in the other, anything you want). Plus it’s very easy to multi-boot for many generations of games (have XP/7/10/Linux or whatever else you want), and you can run virtual machines for all your friends for really old games.
      Like my desktop for example can turn into the ultimate LAN party box, since it has a couple Ethernet ports and WiFi (so you don’t need a router, just direct plug in other computers), not to mention I could split it into fourths and run 4c/8t Ryzen at 4+ GHz with each having its own GPU and let everyone play whatever they want with GPU passthrough (they seriously need to make this easier), or I can run it all as a single machine that will dominate games like Crysis 3 running at 4k Ultra at 100 fps thanks to quad crossfire (I’m using a Threadripper if anyone is confused).
      It’s an ever expanding potential platform, and the cost to entry is low for a 1080p 120 fps machine (like $250 in used parts), but sadly it’s completely lacking against consoles in the ease of set up and just “plug and play” for parties and such, which is a shame because it has such potential (when a PS3 is running 4 splitscreens and yet PC can’t as a standard you know that’s whack!).
      But games are extremely cheap on PS3 now (like $3 to $5 at GameStop), so yeah, you can get a decent collection for like $100. I still enjoy PS 1/2/3 occasionally with friends (still need to find crash bandicoot for next time I see my friend with a PS1, what an awesome game!)

    Man, I think you've missed one of the best points! Game mods!
    Now I can't speak for Xbox, but back in the day on Wii I was playing a ton of these!
    You have project M, an amazing smash mod that still has a tournament scene and online play to this day, and is worth considering for the title of best smash game ever made.
    You also have Mario kart CTGP, adding more than 200 new tracks to Mario Kart, including new mechanics like faster boosts, I got triple the enjoyment out of this than any Mario kart released before or since!
    And you've got newer Mario Bros, custom worlds for new super mario Bros that add all new worlds, powerups, and just a phenomenal sequel overall, plus another one in development!
    Patching your game disks to play these transformational overhauls of amazing games is the REASON to play a modded Wii, imo, and I'd love some details on the Xbox side of this, too!

    In addition, for the Nintendo Wii, if you scrub your ISO's with DMToolbox (select Optimized, Auto, and leave the box unchecked), then go to Nintendont's settings and turn on Unlock Read Speed, your games can load things much faster and smoother. My playthrough of Mega Man X Command Mission has gone from something like 140 hours for the entire game plus secret bosses, to something like 25 to get to the seventh of ten chapters and one secret boss taken down. The biggest change is the random battles loading in much faster, you don't have to sit and stare at the same trippy effect for like ten seconds anymore, which is greatly appreciated since grinding in this game can take a WHILE. And loading screens with the text "accessing" take about half the time. I have noticed a bit more speed in the battles themselves as well. Overall I'm having a much better experience with a game I already loved, and if nothing else, you can do this to save space on your USB/SD storage and cram more games on.

    Now, I don't know what your answer is but I'm going to take a stab at it before finishing the video. My guess is the original Xbox for a few reasons.
    1. You can get one with an S-controller and be ready for any game out of the box.
    2. It comes with a hard drive while small is perfect for retro games. You could also rip that small hard drive out and put a much bigger one in. Yes, you would have to crack it open but hey, your modding it so go nuts!
    3. The original Xbox is internet ready right out of the box no need to deal with anything else...just plug and play.
    4. The dashboard on the original Xbox is just begging to be changed and most people do this. I think it has a cool factor that the Wii just doesn't.
    5. The Xbox has far less shovelware on it and you also have a decent library of games intended for the machine.
    Let's see if I'm right...for me I was.

    Well, you are an Xbox fanboy alright.

  • @WalterMan
    @WalterMan 5 років тому +1

    I like both systems, but there is pros and cons for each.
    OG Xbox: The OG Xbox is a great system to mod, and I love making my own dashboards for the OG Xbox, and it is hard to mess up the OG Xbox, but if you do, you can just burn Rocky5’s softmod disc and restore your OG Xbox to Factory Settings. Like MVG said, there is great homebrew and emulators for the OG Xbox. But the OG Xbox is older and could cost more if you get it from eBay. Not to mention that dumb old clock capacitor on the Xbox. You have to get rid of that thing before your Xbox rots away. Unless you have a 1.6 Xbox.
    The Nintendo Wii: The Nintendo Wii is also a good console to softmod. All you have to do is buy a SD card for the wii to mod it. (for the Xbox you need 1 out of 4 games, a usb drive, and a special cable) Another thing is that the Wii is easer brick making it useless. The Wii is newer than the Xbox, meaning it should last for a long time. It is smaller, quieter and not very heavy. (THE OG XBOX WEIGHS 8 POUNDS) You get wireless controllers and you can play GameCube Games. The wii is also cheaper to find most of the time.
    I will say that a have not modded a wii (yet) but I have looked into it greatly. But I do think the OG Xbox is the better one, but maybe not for beginners. But both are very good and you can’t go wrong choosing one.

  • @GoobyGooby

      @@bitset3741 I remember it being heavily discounted though, whilst the Xbox/PS2 held their prices, and still no one (I knew) wanted a Gamecube probably because it didn't have GTA :D Had the Xbox got GTA 3 at launch as was originally planned (iirc) it probably would have been different with regards to sales compared to the PS2.

    I have my ORIGINAL Xbox... and I hard modded it (back when that was the only option for modding), so I could run games off the 200gb (it was big at the time) drive. Do I need to re-mod to do emulators, or should I be able to just FTP things on it and call it a day ? I was thinking about just getting another one and mod the heck out of it but, if I can dump in a 1tb drive in my current one(they do take 3.5" drives), and I could keep all my games and go crazy with emulation on it....hmmmm

    The more I learn about homebrew on consoles the more obvious it becomes that the whole effort is about attempting to run software that a PC can run better already.

      zytkqnvpjb that’s true in a way, but I look at it as a way of unlocking a console’s potential. I own a pc for emulation but I still enjoy homebrewing a console. Especially on handhelds like the 3ds you can take a lot of systems on the go and the console isn’t that expensive

      I mean I totally understand the fun of hacking a system to understand how it works, etc. but if your goal is just emulation then using a PC will be easier and will bring better results.
      And of course handhelds are a different story since they offer something that a PC does not have, namely portability of the system and the ability to play anywhere.

      zytkqnvpjb the wii and the xbox are both dirt cheap and connect to a tv easier for multiplayer. Both are far more portable than a pc, especially the wii. Also its just nice to have natively supported controllers that work every time without setting them up.

    Homebrew for the original Xbox was to make one of the best systems even better. Wii homebrew was an attempt to get a half decent console out of one of the worst.

    I mean you can just inject your own N64 games into virtual console and get a better experience but oh well...

    Next verses should be between the WiiU and Xbox 360... sounds like a decent match to me

    I'm more shocked at how much older the xbox is yet it's more powerful. It shouldn't even be close with that gap in time.
