Well... as I have studied film at the university our lecturer (cameraman with several awards in Cannes) once said: if you have a little budget - buy a good lens, and for the rest of money a camera. I truly share this statement.
Whats the best cheapest camera? I only got like 100$ every month
@@nickflei are there any other cheaper cameras?
@@Doctordoom128 Yeah, the older sony-nex-generations are very cheap and you can get solid video out of it. Take a look at the sony nex 3 - this one you can get used for around 125€ WITH a lens! 🥳 If you want to spend more, look at the sony nex 5 or sony nex 7

You are one of the only youtubers i know who actually makes videos for people like us and who understand that while expensive is great, the camera most of us have saved up for and who cant afford expensive, can make quality work and is worth it. I've watched i think over a hundred different youtubers to see how they use cheaper cameras, and while they show it works, it's never without saying how cheap and meh it is, always somehow talking down to it in a cheery voice. Thank you bro, without you, I don't think i would have settled myself to be okay with and love my camera and all it can do.
I really appreciate that! That’s the whole point of my channel!
Plus it's weather sealed. Get it with the 12-60mm kit lens and you've got a complete weather sealed set up with even better image stabilization, due to the lens stabilization.
Just got my sony a6100 😭😭❤️ can I get a heart if you believe that I can make good use of it?
Thanks for this video, Nigel! The G85 is my current go-to M4/3 camera for my channel, and I think it's highly overlooked and under-rated. I looked really hard at the G9, but just didn't want all that extra size and weight. I now also have the S5 (which of course I love for different reasons) but the G85 and M4/3 is still my favorite setup. Thanks for shining a light on this little gem of a camera! :)
I’ve had the g85 for about two years. And I actually started on the GH3 because of your videos. I love the versatility of the G85. The 4k image is nice and clean, focus peaking is a big plus, IS is as good as the GH5 and it’s really affordable. Downside is the dynamic range and the 1080p image is not that clean and as with all Panasonic camera’s the autofocus is terrible. But overall I love the G85. It’s just a really versatile easy to use camera with tons of features.
I actually got this camera earlier this year and it's bean great for my video clases and even photography. I hope you keep uploading videos about it so I can learn to use mine better. Thanks for the great content : D
I did purchase this camera last year and I really love my Lumix G85 it is all that I need. I'm just an enthusiast in videography but this little camera it is still rocking even though it was released I think in 2017.
Your videos are really awesome greetings from El Salvador 🇸🇻👋
I've been using this camera for over a year for UA-cam videos and its great. And it doesn't record 24fps in 1080p but honestly 23.99 fps is just fine and completely unnoticeable compared to 24fps.
I’ve been looking for my first camera for a long time and I think you helped me find it, thank you so much!
Great video Nigel! I was a long time user of the Panasonic G7 and loved that camera but it was lacking IBIS. So very recently I traded up for a G80 version with the 25mm 1.7 and I'm glad/excited to see what the camera is capable of due to your video. Warm regards from Australia!
I bought three of these last year (well, G80, because I'm in the UK), along with two GX80s. Zero regrets. Fantastic little cameras. I still use my Nikon DSLRs for stills and timelapse, but for video, the Panasonics are awesome. :)
But night recording and AF are a bit of a shit right?
Great content and I have Switched from canon to M43 because of you.
Thanks for the video! The Panasonic g85 (g80 here in Europe) was my first camera as a filmmaker bought in 2017 which I still use today. I've easily made more than 10k from client work with this little camera and the images are beautiful. I got it for approx £700 new and now trading it in for £400 against a Lumix S5. It was a very capable camera but now I want to expand and see what I can do with full frame. Also I just bought a new DJI ronin RSC 2 and only realised it's not compatible with the G85 so good timing that the S5 is incoming 😄
I'm so happy that you have so many subscribers now Sir Nigel. you were the reason i started in MFT, photography and video, last year.
Thank you for the amazing moments you have given me even without knowing. I hope you keep it simple as always.
Thank you!
Love my G85 and my G9! Thanks for the video!
Simple. Calming. Helpful. Thanks a lot buddy
I've had my G85 for a couple of weeks now and I'm in love with this camera. I don't plan on shooting too much in 4K so the crop doesn't bother me. I sold my Canon M50 after getting the G85 and it's almost like I moved up to a Pro Grade camera at a consumer level price. Love your simplistic approach!
I appreciate that, the g85 is great!
how is the autofocus for video?
@@NigelBarros I always heard the M50 is a legend. This beat it?
@@jcap8391 yeah me too heard about this
Great video Nigel, I’ve been using the g85 for a few years. Great camera for travel!
Rocked the g85 in Scotland on a trip a couple years back, sold that camera for the g9… I still miss the g85…
Awesome. I own G6, G85, & GH5. Still loving my g85.
It’s been my B cam to my GH5 and has gotten me some stellar results 🖖🏾
Grats on making such amazing content, Keep growing
Love that camera. I have a hard time to contemplate heavier cameras, because it's so convenient to just stick the G85 with the 12-60 f2.8 and the 25mm f/1.7. I am planning to get the X-S10, but only because the X-S10 seems like the APS-C G85. If that makes any sense. Still going to use my G85 though, because it's great.
X-S10 is a great camera. It has IBIS, Autofocus, Fuji Colors, mic jack. Everything you expect from a great camera. Only reason why I dont go for it is because for 400$ more you can get 10bit from XT4 :P
You were the reason I pulled the trigger on the G85, watching your mft videos gave me the confidence that those cameras are worth it!
I've been shooting on the Panasonic G85 for little more than a year now, and i absolutely adore the camera! Its ability to push out smooth and beautiful footage at any conditions is simply unrivalled for the price you can find it at!
How is auto focus in g85? please tell
@@QuizWave594 The continuous autofocus in 4k is slow and unresponsive, I always use manual focus to shoot my videos. In 1080p it does become better but not by much. If focus is critical id say go with 1080p 60fps as it has the most responsive autofocus
@@pranav_avn.brother how is video quality in 1080p on g85? And dynamic range? I am planning to buy it but I am confused how's quality of Panasonic as compare to sony a6100 Or 6300, canon m50, Panasonic gh4
@@QuizWave594 The 1080p quality is better than the 1080p video from the a6300 and m50 with a lot more sharpness and detail.. It has adequate amounts of dynamic range for the things I shoot and is very good! To see it in action you can maybe watch some videos on my channel, that might give you a better idea!
@@pranav_avn . From where you buy g85 because g85 not showing in flipkart and Amazon... And how much money you spent to buy g85?
That's the video I was looking for 😀 thank you! I'm planning to shoot my first little documentary and I'm looking for something different from my nikon dslr (great for photo, not so great for videos)
Thanks for the information, much appreciated 🙏
I shoot on a G85 and it’s been really great it’s definitely going to hold me over until the GH6
Awesome! The G85 is the camera I use for all of my videos. And in all honesty, I feel like I have so far underused it. Do you mind making a video in the future about colour profiles on this camera? '
used the G85 for 2 years before I sold it. solid camera.
Used the G7 and G85 for pro video work until last year and they are really solid cameras for the price! Recently upgraded to the S5 and I already love it, but the G85 is still a strong b-cam.
Hi. Would you recommend this for wedding videos? Really need to get started on something solid but not pricey
@@JMXCzw depends if you work in poorly lit indoor setups, as that's where these cameras sometimes lack (image gets a bit noisy because if the small sensor).
@@guillaumepj Thanks for the response. Low light is a real hussle... I will probably look into the aps-c options.
I picked the G85 over the GH4 just because of the IS. The only regrets are no .mov files, slowmo rates are limited and no headphones jack. But this is still a fantastic camera.
love this..
The G85 is epicc. My new favorite cam
3:53 did you use the camerastrap tecnique to stabilize the footage here? looks great!
Hello! Thanks for this video. I wanted to ask you if you would recommend this for making documentaries, mostly made with the camera on a tripod and the moving subjects in the background, or would you have another one to recommend? Thanks again :)
Can't beat the stabilization and sharpness. If you were shooting in 1080p I would say keep the gh4 because of the bit rates it has. But since you doing 4k, definitely if I was you I would keep the g85 and sell the gh4.
Dope af!
I picked up a G9 on prime day for the same price as the g85 and damn that ibis and 10 bit colour is juicy
I'm going to rent this guy from a camera shop near me to see how I like it! I haven't really shot on Panasonic yet
Subtle thing but MAN I love your watermark logo
Thanks.
If you have time can you please make a video about the "Best Budget Cinema Camera Under $1000.
Or the "Best Camera for Budget film making Under $1000.
As someone that owns the GH5, G85 and the GX85, I've found that I grab the GX85 more often than either just because of how tiny it is. The GH5 is what I'll use when I need 10 bit, 4K60p, or the more advanced video features, but I find for fun and most little projects I can get away with just using the GX85.
I need all 3 for my multicamera jobs, and it's not an exact comparison to your question re: keeping the GH4, but if you don't wanna keep both I think going with the one that makes it easier / is the most versatile is probably the way to go.
I also once bought the GX85 used from ebay... Thought it would be significantly smaller than the G85. Turned out, it's quite similar size- and weightwise... but the grip and the ergonomics feel not as good as the G85. So I sold it again...
Nice, I I have a G85, and mine does shoot 24 frames at 1080p. I think it's a US/UK thing. Do you notice any noise in your shadows on the G85? Even at 200 iso, I can see some noise in my shadows which is really frustrating! Besides that, great camera for me.
Def my first film camera still is!
Hi. I would like to know if you experienced some heat with your G85 ? Mine is heating immediatly when I use it. I have a G7 and never experienced anything like this. Thank you for your videos!
Great video! What are your thoughts about the Fuji XT30?
I bought a G80 for 400 dollars with a 14-42 f3.5-5.6 kit lens. After this video I'm proud of my camera.
How in the world are you lighting and exposing for your opening talking head shot so that the window in the background isn't blown out? Also, that G85 looks like a really great intro video camera.
Man Tysm, you really get straight to the point.
Hi Nigel. Why did you switch to 4K?

Been looking for a little b cam to use every now and then, this might be the one. Cheers Nigel!
I was thinking the same. Great option for b-roll. Can find lots of G80 in uk but not G85.
@@anywherenearzero G80/G85 same camera - G80 is uk version 😊
@@anywherenearzero G80 has a video record limit Of 29mins 59secw, whereas the G85 has unlimited. Thats the only difference.
There are "hack" videos on UA-cam to unlock the record limit tho 👍😉
@@IXISSV please explain what you mean by limit. Surely if I change me Mery card and batteries it won’t have any limit ?
@@anywherenearzero i Europe, the G80 has a recording limit set by Panasonic because of EU tax reasons. If it were to record longer than 29mins 59secs, it would be classed as a video camera, so would have a higher tax band!
Thats why the G80 in USA, Canada etc can record for longer. Same reason why the GH5 etc cost more in Europe because they have unlimited record time
Hi Nigel. Please advice what step-up ring you use on a lens?
I just bought G85 last month!
What do you think about it?

I have a g100 and I'm considering switching to this camera
I really like the idea of getting a Panasonic, but two things mess me up. Auto focus and I don't want to colour grade log. Outside of that I would have had one already. They make such convenient and well-kitted cameras. I'm looking at the EM5III, but I hear the audio is pretty garbage on it.
Natural is a great color profile with Panasonic
I bought a g7. As a BCam. But is up with the “no monitoring via HDMI” while recording. I
Probably should of gotten this. I do have the Black magic 4K. But wit the the sigma 18-35 . It Is just huge and heavy.
Hello! For short fils, vlogs, prank videos and generally for videography which one is better.. canon m50 or Panasonic g85? I mostly want it for short film and stuff BUT I don’t want to color grade bc i want the raw video I’ll be using iMovie that is why! Please help me!🙏
Hey bro what Color grading did you use for that camera for the more orange look
Love from india brother hats of love
Had my G85 for a few years now -- for photos and "home movie" videos -- love it. The AF can be frustrating at times, but for the size, price and image quality overall, hard to beat. But I had a question -- what 15mm f1.7 lens are you using? The Panasonic Leica DG Summilux? It sounds like in the video you are saying "DJI" -- which has me stumped! For stills, and static video shots, I love using simple adapters (not speedboosters) and any of my (way too) many vintage manual focus lenses.
DJI makes a 15mm MFT lens....
love from Bangladesh
Can you zoom in while filming? Need a good camera for my trip to Iceland
Funny I was just looking at these on ebay and I was like dang they are cheap!
Hey Nigel, g85 enough for cinema screen?
Would you pick the canon m50 or the g85?
I'd step up to G9 just for better IBIS, 10bit V-Log, 4K60.
I've been shooting with the g80 (EU version) almost since it came out. I really like it, but I have been thinking about upgrading to something else. As a hybrid shooter I've had trouble finding a good camera for photo and video use. I might need to start thinking about getting two cameras or just start by getting something better for photos since the video side on the g80/85 is pretty good. Maybe invest in some canon ef glass, a speedbooster and get a r series camera or something, idk yet.
What lenses are you using with the G80?
@@jbstravels1741 I mainly use the panasonic 12-35mm f2.8. I have the original version. I also have the pancake looking panasonic 20mm and the olymypus 45mm f1.8 and 75mm f1.8 lenses and a few other ones. My father and brother are also into photography and both use the mft system but don't shoot as much so I don't own all of these but I still have them almost always at my disposal. For a fist lens I could recomend the 12-35mm to pretty much everybody since it is so versatile. Mft has a 2x crop so when comparing to fullframe you have to douple them so 12mm mft =24mm full frame. The apeture isn't the same either but the math isn't as straight forward. There are some good videos and text about that you can google. I've been using mft systems for six years now.
Thanks for the reply. I've been with MFT too since 2015 with Olympus OMD and I've been able to amass some nice lenses like the 17mm, 45mm, 75mm and 12-40 Pro. I'm finding I'm getting great stills even from an OMD EM5 from 2012 that's paired with a Premium or Pro lens. I did pick up fairly recently a G80 with the 25mm 1.7 and was curious as to why you weren't happy with the stills from this camera?
@@jbstravels1741 My main reason is the limitations of a mft sensor. The lowlight isn't that good and it's hard to get good bokeh. Panasonic's auto focus isn't that great either. I've been doing a lot of client work too and I think it's time to upgrade to something more professional. The difference isn't really that big, I get by just fine with my g80 but I also want a new challenge.
Good luck with whatever you decide to go with
What is your opinion about the autofocus system of this camera?
G7 or G85 first cam for lots of photos and videography?
Some great points. I’m in the market for a good flog/streaming camera. How well does the G85 work for streaming?

@@alexwr ok well personally I have never seen 4k so I can't tell haha
It sounds like he likes to film in 24 fps, and 4k is the only option for 24 fps on the G85.
Had to literally import two of these bad bois from the US as the UK can't make any good cameras without restrictions like; Record Limit & not outputting HDMI while recording (meaning you can't use a monitor). Cost me about twice as much but worth it.
btw, I do LONG form recordings and livestreams for things like Conferences and Weddings, so I needed those 2 main things from my camera, as I can't be dealing with a 25 or 30 min recording limit, and I also need my camera to output to my switcher for livestreaming etc.
Ideally, once I have the money I will switch to a bmpcc 4k/6k set up with maybe 3 or 4 cameras, as I can then control them from my ATEM.
Edit*
Btw, the G7 is absolute dog$#!t if you are wanting to record more than 25min or output to a monitor while filming. Also, don't get the G80 (the UK version of the G85), same issue.
Love from Pakistan ❤️❤️❤️
Fujifilm for life. No any other cameras look as elegant as Fuji.
Man, the price can be still too much for a beginner. What do you think about the tz90 or the fz300?
Hey! The short version is: I would recommend the FZ1000, but not the FZ300 (because it has a larger 1-inch sensor) but I have a few details as to why I say this as follows:
1. The FZ1000 can produce a much better image (for a number of reasons...mostly due to bigger sensor)
2. The FZ1000 is about the same price on the used market
3. I have used the FZ1000 on several professional jobs, and while it can't handle the lower light at telephoto end of the zoom, it is MUCH better than the FZ300 (which is REALLY bad in low light). Recommended "filmic" settings for FZ1000 are on my website
I have the fz200 and still love it for versatility. F2.8 at all focal lengths. It’s a very convenient design
@@MartinBlasick Wow! I've had the FZ200 a couple of times because I liked so many things about it (2.8, slow motion, etc.) but it was tough to use in low light (and the low light video quality was terrible) so I found an FZ1000 for less than $400 and it produced a much better image indoors and out (though it suffers indoors at f/4). The things I like about the FZ1000 (compared to FZ200) are:
1. Much better image quality (especially in low light)
2. More dynamic range and better color and so is easier to edit in post-production
3. Option for manual focus on dial
They take the same battery, so if you find an FZ1000 for a good deal, give it a try if you can😃
@@silverlightphotoco thanks for the tip. I haven’t really investigated the FZ1000. You’re right about the low light on the FZ200.
